Vaginal discharge? Find out
the cause.
Modern laboratory tests can identify a
number of pathogens in vaginal
discharge; therefore, the treatment
can be targeted and effective. Finally,
you can say good-bye to this
unpleasant problem!
Vaginitis and upset vaginal
flora
In case the volume, colour or odour of
vaginal discharge is different from the
usual, and, possibly, this is
accompanied by other unpleasant
symptoms (burning sensation, itching,
irritation, pain during or after sex, etc.),
vaginal infection or pathological
abnormality of the vaginal flora must
be considered.
There are many kinds of bacteria living
in the vagina in a small quantity, which,
due to Lactobacilli that constitute the
overwhelming majority of normal
vaginal flora, cannot proliferate.
However, under certain circumstan-
ces, they can „take over”. Beside this,
some pathogens may enter the vagina
from outside, - e.g., from a sexual
partner – which the vaginal flora
cannot overcome. In both cases,
symptoms may occur.
Besides usual smear tests and
cultures, there are modern methods to
detect the causes of symptoms
quickly and precisely.
Bacterial vaginosis
Typical symptoms include yellow or
greyish discharge of lesser or greater
volume with unpleasant odour,
irritation, even pain. The problem may
be caused by Ureaplasma
urealyticum, Gardnerella vaginalis or
Atopobium vaginae – together or
individually.
These bacteria are considered
pathogenic if their numbers are above
a certain limit. With a procedure called
PCR (polymerase chain reaction), both
the presence and quantity of these
bacteria can be detected.
Treatment is different for the three
pathogens which makes their
identification important.
A control test after treatment and an
examination of the sex partner in case
of Ureaplasma infection is highly
recommended.
After the treatment normal vaginal flora
must be restored. In pregnant women,
these bacteria may cause premature
delivery, so it is essential to identify
and treat the problem as early as
possible.
Trichomoniasis
This single-celled flagellate parasite is
sexually transmitted. This disease is
characterized by abundant, foamy,
greenish-yellow discharge, burning
sensation, itching and pain, but there
are some people who carry the disea-
se without any symptoms, still they
infect their sexual partner. In men it
can cause urethritis (inflammation of
the urethra) with painful urination,
more rarely with discharge, but they
can also be symptomless carriers.
With the PCR technique, even a few
pathogens can be detected. The
identified infection can be cured
quickly and easily.
A PCR test can detect all four
pathogens from a single sample
allowing of a precise diagnosis
which is the basis of successful
treatment. Sample collection can
be performed by a gynaecologist
or a venerologist.
