– ganz einfach „Swissness“ in ihrer besten Form.
An individually planned trade fair booth resembles pregnancy to a certain degree: it takes about nine months and you never know in advance all the details and what will be the result in the end. But there is an end to similarities because upon opening of a trade fair at the latest, the result in all its facets is obvious to all participants. And therefore it is even more important to have professional and creative partners for the realization of such a project since unexpected things will (almost) always happen – „oh blast, the trade fair company forgot an additional bus bar “ – and then it is essential to be able to improvise in a confident manner without chucking in the entire booth concept.
The foundation for the planning of the Acino stand was Acino Switzerland‘s world of brands and brand ambassadors (www.acino-pharma.com): Switzerland, mountains, tidiness, high-tech, best quality, tradition, sustainability... – simply „Swissness“ in its best form. The first design proposal was already convincing!
The idea: bringing the Swiss mountains to Madrid in a literally unique stand, built in a sustainable manner and hand-made in accordance with specific traditional Spanish craftsmanship. Forthcoming, inviting, with an organic design language.

Let us say right away: the concept was a great success, and Acino with its stand and its first “big” performance at CPhI was the shooting star among the exhibitors; with expenditures within the range of a standard concept!
The trade fair booth became a second home to many partners of the company who would always come back to the stand in order to spend their breaks in between discussions and appointments here – and in order to be “closer” to exchange views with Acino’s dialogue partners. It simply could not have been better! Even more so when a first positive overall impression is confirmed afterwards, and is later reflected by successful business transactions.
Looks good here: Although the booth looks very open, not everybody can fit inside, essentially only exactly the visitors whom the customer wanted to see.
Place for meetings at eye level: room to communicate, negotiate, relax or celebrate.

– ganz einfach „Swissness“ in ihrer besten Form.
How ell that can function can be seen on the example of the drafts from Gabriel Pranzini on the theme of Switzerland, mountains, cleanliness, high-tech, best quality, tradition, sustainability... – very simply “Swissness” in its best form.
On the previous pages, we have presented the presence of Acino at the CPhI 2012 trade fair. Here below, the large drafts indicates the actual presence of the company at the CPhI trade fair. And here on the right, we have again summarized the alternatives for you in the same context.
And effectively: The customers are quickly spoilt for choice. Nevertheless, sweetened anguish...
Conclusion: Many roads lead to Rome.
SOMETIMES A DILEMMA: A THEME MUST BE FORMIDABLY WELL IMPLEMENTED AT A TRADE FAIR STAND

Gabriel Pranzini has a background in theatre, he is Italian, and he is really an artist. But he found the cultural sector by itself too dull and slow, the Italians too spoilt and self-satisfied and the stage too small. He has now been living in Barcelona for 13 years, has a Spanish wife, and prefers to conduct this interview in Spanish rather than in Italian: an interview with the founder of Contemporanea in Barcelona, perhaps one of the most creative booth construction companies in Europe.

FROM THEATRE TO TRADE FAIR - INTERVIEW WITH
GABRIEL PRANZINI

All about authentic communication
SWIRIDOFF 01: Sie bevorzugen also den möglichst direkten Kundenkontakt?
SWIRIDOFF 01: Mr Pranzini, you are a stage designer by trade. What is your initial trigger when you plan a booth?
PRANZINI: Well, I of course want to know exactly what my client needs the booth for, what message it is supposed to convey, what its function is and what kinds of visitors they hope to attract... And there are huge differences: sometimes I get comprehensive briefings – sometimes from the company itself, sometimes from agencies – that give me comparatively little room to manoeuvre. Often this is because the people who draw up the briefing themselves do not have much idea about what is in fact possible.
SWIRIDOFF 01: So you prefer your contact with the client to be as direct as possible?
PRANZINI: Of course, but I think that all creative people have this dilemma.
SWIRIDOFF 01: Let’s get back to the function of the booth, how important is clear positioning when it comes to function?
PRANZINI: It is essential! Because there is, of course, a huge difference between whether the client addresses the consumer with a worldwide product innovation or (as is often the case with our long-standing client Alcatel for example) the booth is mostly a meeting place for international distribution partners.
SWIRIDOFF 01: And what happens once that’s all clear and settled?PRANZINI: Then I look for connections: creating a connection
between the language of contemporary art (how messages are conveyed) and the “stage” of the booth. Because after all, an exhibition, a display, means showcasing yourself, showing something, like in the theatre. And then – also similar to the theatre – there is the element of surprise. A good trade fair booth is always a great surprise! First for the client, and then for the visitor.
I personally hold Claes Oldenburg in high esteem: he likes to surprise people by monumentalising objects.
SWIRIDOFF 01: We have seen you do this a few times. This year’s Acino stand for the biggest pharmaceutical fair in the world, the CPhI in Frankfurt, speaks this very language. But is that enough?
PRANZINI: No, of course not. We have talked about function, about the message and about language. But what’s also important is style.
Erst die Handarbeit, dann die Maus...
First by hand, then by Mouse...

Creatitivity is important, but in the end it‘s quality and practibility in detail: Clara Frigé watches every detail in the construction phase as the Project Manager.
SWIRIDOFF 01: What do you mean by that?PRANZINI: You have just mentioned our stand for Acino at the
CPhI. If Acino were a machine building company for example, then the same message could have been conveyed using the same language (the language of contemporary art, gigantism in this case) and integrated into a mechanical structure, using a different style that is, perhaps a bit more industrial, more solid, along the lines of heavy metal.
The topic of “repetition” also works in a similar way to gigantomania: here, too, the material as a stylistic device is crucial. A while ago I saw the stand of a glass manufacturer at a trade fair that was completely made from stacked glass. Unfortunately, this was not our stand, but I saw it and I immediately said “¡olé! ¡grande!”. And the impact of this stand was solely based on the use of one single material. Other stylistic devices of course include colours, textures, light ... – there are no limits to the imagination.
SWIRIDOFF 01: Where do you get your ideas from? What inspires you?
PRANZINI: Initially from within myself, from what I’ve learnt and from the experience I have gained. Ideally, they also come from the briefing to an extent, which may already convey an implicit idea. For example, we are currently working on a big stand for the Mobile World Congress. Our client already clearly expressed the idea of a bridge between the world of telephone and the world of finance. What’s it about? To put it simply, about bank transactions on your mobile for example. That’s what gave the client the idea about the bridge. We are in the process of implementing this idea.
SWIRIDOFF 01: And how to do implement the idea of a bridge?PRANZINI: In an abstract way. We return to art, in this case
to abstract art. But of course we must never lose sight of the three levels involved in the perception of a trade fair booth. First, it’s about perception from a distance, immediate recognisability, in classic

Seit Jahren treuer Kunde von Pranzini - Alcatel präsentiert seine
Mobilkommunikation buchstäblich im Tempel.
For years loyal customers of PranzinI- Alcatel show off their Mobile
Communication in a literal temple.
SWIRIDOFF 01: Woher bekommen Sie Ihre Ideen, was inspiriert Sie?PRANZINI: Zunächst einmal aus mir selbst, aus dem, was ich gelernt und an
Erfahrung gesammelt habe.
advertising you would call this attention: it doesn’t matter how beautiful a stand is, if you can’t recognise the company logo from a distance, to me it’s not a good stand. There are of course legitimate exceptions, such as if a company wants to play hide and seek in order to provoke a surprise later on.
The second level is what’s at eye level. Now the visitors will have forgotten most of the impressions they got from a distance. Now it’s all about what can be perceived from 5 metres away: as little text as possible, a lot of images, because visitors don’t have time to read. We know that a visitor makes a decision within no more than three seconds about whether to visit the stand or not. The third level refers to the experience in the booth: the feeling, the ambience I come across, my personal perception. Materials, light, sound, smells – ideally, every trade fair stand is a world of its own...
SWIRIDOFF 01t: In your view, what is the difference between an artistic stage design and commercial booth construction?
PRANZINI: Well, initially I did a master’s degree in architecture and also worked in garden and landscape architecture. Then I had the opportunity to train in the theatre as an assistant to José Menchero, one of the most well-known and successful stage designers in Spain. I still feel very grateful to him and have affection for everything he has taught me. During this time I also wrote my master’s thesis entitled “The mask of business”. It was about the parallels between artistic stage construction and commerce. It was also about how quickly and intensely, in today’s world of business, every impulse from the artistic sphere is sponged up. Why? Because ultimately we are just human and look for our own form of addressing the public, it’s always about exhibition.
Light and airy, but still stylish and offering a clear structure.

SWIRIDOFF 01: So with your transition to booth construction you were looking for a bigger stage?
PRANZINI: Yes, you could say that. But there is something else: it may have its own appeal to work on and support a production in the theatre thoroughly and over a long period of time – but such a production runs over a year or two; that doesn’t fulfil me. For me personally, the challenge of being constantly creative on a high level, with many projects running in parallel and often under extreme time pressure is much more satisfying. It means always being alert, curious and quick. Of course in the theatre you sometimes have more artistic freedom, because on the face of it no commercial goals are pursued. But there are also limits, and on the other hand, many companies are very bold these days.
SWIRIDOFF 01: How important is the size of the trade fair stand to you?
PRANZINI: It doesn’t really play a big role; but if it’s less than 40 square metres I am quite limited when it comes to ideas, especially since I almost always have to take requirements into account, such as a counter, storage, entrance area, seating etc. But you can work well with a stand between 50 and 150 square metres. I would consider a stand that is bigger than 200 square metres a large one, and the biggest stand we have constructed so far had an area of 1,500 square metres.
SWIRIDOFF 01: What bothers you most about a trade fair stand?PRANZINI: Well, generally I don’t like to talk about others, but
perhaps I can say this: often it’s not about cost factors, but about bad advice, a lack of creativity, sloppy implementation and a lack of initiative. Or a lack of focus, which happens a lot.
SWIRIDOFF 01: How important are the craftspeople that you work with for your success?
PRANZINI: Almost priceless (he laughs), but seriously: being in constant dialogue with the craftspeople is extremely important. Only together are we able to develop truly convincing solutions. Creative ideas perfectly crafted. For me, that‘s successful booth construction!
An easy solution, even from a distance still effective.

FOCUS ON TRADE FAIRS – INTER VIE W

SWIRIDOFF 01: Does this also work outside of Europe?PRANZINI: Yes, of course. Although this is not what we focus on,
we have had large trade fair stands in China, Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the past. But we usually work in Europe. We have several project managers that make every effort to look after our clients and supervise the construction of our trade fair stands throughout Europe. We are currently dealing with five stands in France at the same time. We also have branches in Poland and Italy, but our head office is in Barcelona.
SWIRIDOFF 01: And how come you as an Italian have decided to work in Spain and with Spanish people in the craft sector of all things? After all, don’t the Italians have a better reputation in this area?
PRANZINI: That’s not true! In Spain there is more flexibility than I have come across anywhere else. There is very little in Germany, very little in Italy, very little in Poland. I am talking about the kind of professionalism that is expressed in the flexibility of changing an idea, for example. This is very important to me when I look for the best possible solution for the client. And: when I work together with Spanish craftspeople I feel a passion for our work.
SWIRIDOFF 01: Theirs or yours?PRANZINI: Ours.
SWIRIDOFF 01 Mr Pranzini, thank you very much.
Kreative Ideen in perfekter Handwerksarbeit.
In Deutschland sehr wenig, in Italien sehr wenig, in Polen sehr wenig.
SWIRIDOFF 01: Herr Pranzini, vielen Dank.

All about authentic communication

THE LIST – EPISODE 1, TRADE FAIR CONSTRUCTION
Firstly, define what the stand should actually provide. Is it the B2B or B2C sector, is the presentation or the initial presentation of products in the foreground, or is it rather the function of a meeting point? The more precise and explicit you initially define the function and the following points, the more accurate can your stand be implemented.
Is my target group established in the B2B or B2C sector, is it primarily completely „foreign“ or do you particularly wish to meet „old acquaintances“, in which age category are your clientele, of which social status are your target group and, foremost – what does your target group expect from you?
Surprise your trade fair visitors: Nothing is more boring to a visitor as to walk down rows of stands at a trade fair that are more or less always the same, searching for „my“ stand and then to find it just as unspectacular. Only when your visitors have a real „aha“ experience is your presence at the trade fair really successful.
The rule is ancient, but moreso important at trade fairs: Less is more! Permit the visitors to your stand to recuperate from the primarily fully overloaded impressions of the trade fair that completely disorderly bombard them... – and actually focus on the nucleus of your message, exclusively concentrate on that. The effect is then that much greater and, simultaneously, more permanent.
Make sure that your trade fair stand is well visible from a distance. Of course, this also includes recognition of your company logo from a greater distance.
When the visitor is then standing directly in front of your stand, - will he/she be surprised (see above)? Do they feel invited? Do they understand at a glance what you wish to communicate? And above all: Do they really have the desire to venture over to you? Or would you prefer to somewhat demarcate yourself and only wish to have the visitors at your stand that you, e.g. already know? Then it is only important: Not to simply unify, but to convey a very „open“ impression, but have a small „hurdle“, for example, a logical but somewhat narrow access to your stand.
When you wish to have the „correct“ visitors with you on your stand, you should also provide an „at home“ feeling, a location where they can feel comfortable in all the confusion of the trade fair. Does your stand actually fulfill that? Is there sufficient seating available, is it possible to comfortably chat or, as required, to confidentially withdraw etc. Or, e.g. if families are addressed: Have children a definite space and is the stand designed for children so that the parents are not permanently worried that the small ones knock down or displace something here or there, or otherwise disarrange something?

Is your trade fair stand actually suitable to bequeath a sustainable impression? However, more important: What remains of your stand after the trade fair? Is that several tons of hazardous waste, or are the materials ecologically harmless and can possibly be even recycled?
Avoid everything that appears to be sensational – it will not be rewarded. Thus, loud music (with which you will annoy the person on the neighbouring stand), intensive odours or intrusive lighting effects. Or even more unsuitable orchestrations: The buxom Brazilian beauty, who appears on the stand at a doctor‘s congress in a bikini, in order to serve as the „patient“ for a new form of pain therapy, superficially has success and forms clusters of people (doctors are also known to be only human beings), however, the actual and long-term effect for the company is more negative – one is then no longer really taken seriously.
Provide sufficient, friendly and liberal personnel for the stand. That does not mean that your visitors are continuously „bombarded“ by the personnel and have no free space themselves. However, fully competent persons from your company of an introvert nature should not be in the forefront at your trade fair stand in order to greet your visitors. And nothing is more embarrassing as the trainee who obviously has no idea of how to serve a guest, however, balances the coffee towards the guest and, at the last moment, somehow manages to pour the coffee over the suit or dress: The investment in a well casted professional hostess is insignificantly small in comparison to the overall cost of a trade fair stand.
