Celebrating Big Band Masters of the 21st CenturyThe Los Angeles area is home to many of the most outstanding jazz composers and arrangers in the world today. Swingin On A Riff not only celebrates the music of these great masters but features them leading their own ensembles. Theres something very special about hearing the music exactly as the writer meant for it to be heard and the only way that happens is when the leader is also the person who wrote the music.Thats what makes this festival unique. It isnt just a big band festival but a true gathering of giants each interpreting their own music with their own hand picked musicians. There are numerous highlights throughout

the 5 day, 18 concert festival including a rare big band performance by Alan Broadbent as well as a reunion of Bob Curnows L.A. Big Band. In addition to the composer/arranger led bands, there is also a special concert featuring the music of Bill Russo, two college showcase concerts and a Sunday brunch celebrating The Birth of the Cool. PLUS rare films and panel discussions (see Program listings on the center spread for details). Its another one of a kind presentation not to be missed and I hope you will plan to join us.

  • Extra Event: Wednesday, May 22, 2013The Los Angeles Jazz Institute presents a special pre-festival concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. 7:00pm Winchester Cultural Center 3130 McLeod Dr. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas Big Band Reunion The Tommy Vig Big Band performing many of the classic

arrangements from his Vegas years. Many of you will recall his legendary recording The Sound of the Seventies that is considered one of the finest big band albums of all time.

The Las Vegas All Star Reunion Big Band features Bobby Shew, Carl Saunders, Santo Savino and many of the great jazz players who were mainstays of the Vegas Show Bands of the 60s and 70s. At that time the town was full of world class jazz

musicians which created an amazing underground jazz scene that most non-residents never got a chance to experience. This concert will feature the music of Herbie Phillips, Raoul Romero, and John Boice, three of the brilliant arrangers that were

writing amazing music during this period.

A unique concert experience presenting the classic music from three different ensembles that shared a common thread. The Thornhill concert will feature the seminal arrangements of Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan which influenced the formation of what we now think of as The Birth of the CoolThe Birth of the Cool concert will feature those original Miles Davis Nonet arrangements and the creation of the sound that would influence Shorty Rogers and the creation of west coast jazz. This concert features all the surviving music by Evans, Mulligan, John Lewis and Johnny Carisi. The Miles Ahead Concert features music from the classic Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaboration which expanded on the Thornhill/Birth of the Cool style and created one of the most important big band albums of all time.
