OVERVIEW

One of the challenges in working in the multidisciplinary context of building and environmental design is to communicate effectively. This can involve translating quantitative data graphically usingunderstandable units of measure, expressing a complex interrelationship using a diagram, or explaining a process using a narrative metaphor.

The subtext to this assignment is to take an advocacy role and to engage in raising public awareness on a particular issue or topicrelating to the built environment. This involves taking an ethical stance and articulating your values. Go beyond the ‘how’ and the ‘what’, and engage in the ‘why’.

PRODUCE A WORK THAT ADDRESSES THE PUBLIC

In this project you will produce a public document: a letter to the editor, a caricature, a poster, a short film, animation, installation, or performance of some sort. Your assignment is to express the environmental implications of a specific aspect of contemporary life, construction practices, habitation, or urban ecology. Your work must clearly define an issue or problem. You are not required to solve the problem, but you should propose a positive direction or behavioral shift as a response. You may focus on a particular topic that inspired you in class, from your readings, or from your project 1 research. You may also make a commentary or critique on some aspect of your urban environment or a current project in Montreal or elsewhere.
