B Y THOMAS J. MCKILLENMANAGING EDITORThe next era of fire service for the vil-
lages of Menomonee Falls and Lannon hasnow begun.
The communities marked the officialopening of the Menomonee Falls/LannonFire Station 1 at the southwest corner of Main Street and Menomonee Avenue Aug.6. At the start of this year, the Lannon Fire
Department was consolidated into theMenomonee Falls Fire Department, withseveral Lannon Fire Department staff com-ing on board with the combined depart-ment.
As part of overall changes within theMenomonee Falls Fire Department, thenew Fire Station 1 has replaced the previ-ous Fire Station 1 on Appleton Avenue justsouth of Main Street. During the ribbon
cutting for the new station, MenomoneeFalls Director of Protective Services AnnaRuzinski said that the last "tone out" for theAppleton Avenue station was held at 6a.m. Aug. 1. The American flag at that sta-tion was lowered and then transferred tothe new Fire Station 1.
In addition, Menomonee Falls alsoconstructed a new fire station along SilverSpring Drive in Menomonee Falls to servethe southwest portion of the community.
During comments at the ribbon cutting,Menomonee Falls Village Manager MarkFitzgerald noted the village has made "sys-tematic changes to staffing, our organiza-tional structure, our personnel, our com-mand staff and our facilities. It has beenongoing change on an incremental basis --
and frankly, it's probably been overwhelm-ing."Fitzgerald noted that change can be
difficult and said "we clearly had peoplethat left our fire service, but now we havepeople who are poised to stay here, workwithin this combination department andserve the residents of both thevillageMenomonee Falls and the village of Lannon for the long term."
Fitzgerald noted that with the facility
changes, all stations are now staffed on a24-7 basis -- which wasn't in place in theAppleton Avenue station -- and noted thatthere are four stations on the corners of Menomonee Falls while the village'sadministrative operations are in station 3,which is near the village's center.
Fitzgerald also pointed to the name onFire station 1, which reads "MenomoneeFalls/Lannon 1."
"That is not a trivial matter," Fitzgeraldsaid. He said the name is meant to verifythe partnership between the villages. Henoted that with the combined department,Menomonee Falls "gained significant man-power and equipment from Lannon thathelped make this all work."
Fitzgerald also mentioned the roleplayed by the School District of Menomonee Falls in making the new FireStation I possible. The district previouslyowned the property, which had at one timebeen the location of Sunnyside School. However, the school had been closed fordecades and the previous building wasused by the district's maintenance depart-ment. The village acquired the property inexchange for the village turning over a sur-
plus maintenance building just east of theVillage Hall to the district."This is a perfect site for our fire station
network and we couldn't be more happy,"Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald also thanked Public WorksDirector Arlyn Johnson, who served as proj-ect manager for the Fire Station 1 project, for addressing issues during the construc-tion.
Lannon Village President David Nagler
noted he joined the LannoDepartment as an emergency technician in 2011. At the time, NaLannon was a volunteer, paid department with members who ato get full-time positions with othement.
"From my two years on tDepartment, as a resident I realwant to see our Fire Department goNagler said. "However, being department and getting elected (I) the costs to run a department don't they keep getting more and more."
Nagler added that LannoMenomonee Falls have an intermagreement in which Menomonee Fvides snowplowing services for Lathe winter.
"It just made sense to do this cotion," he said. Nagler said when elected village president in 2013,over for negotiations that were pstarted. He also took note of the the Lannon name does appear onFire Station 1 and that 14 LannDepartment members transferred
the Menomonee Falls Department.later added that Patrick Curtis cathe Lannon Fire Department and ibattalion chief while Kevin Portefrom Lannon to be a part-time liwith the Falls Department.
"The Lannon Fire Departmentreally disappear, there is still a prNagler said.

One thing will remain the same forGermantown football this year.
"Just hard nosed football and gettingafter it. That's what we do," GermantownCoach Jake Davis said during an Aug. 10interview. "We're going to make hay onoffense and stop you on defense. That'swhat we try to live on."
There will be plenty of new faces for the
Germantown team this year. Three-yearstarting quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn, Jr.graduated and Davis said he wasn't set onthe personnel for the position.
"We've got guys that played," Davissaid. "We (don't have) an overabundanceof experience, that's what we're going tohave to make up for this year. But we'll getthere."
He added that "there's been guys wait-ing in the wings" for the opportunity. I thinkthey're ready to go."
The program also remains strong withthe number of participants, as there are 60players on the varsity squad and 130 play-ers in the overall program.
The team will be tested right away, asthey play at Kenosha Indian Trails Aug. 21
and host Waukesha Catholic Memorial thenext week before beginning North ShoreConference play. Davis said the teamcame into practice prepared, as severalplayers participated in 7-on-7 competitions.
Davis indicated that the schemes onoffense and defense will likely remain thesame.
“We are what we are. We have a our
base system offense, we are flexibleenough to adapt within our system. I wouldexpect the same Germantown football,"
Davis said. -By Thomas J. McKillen, M

A new season will feature a newoffense for Menomonee Falls football.
During an Aug. 11 interview, CoachDan Lutz said the team has a "totally newoffense" along with changes to the special
teams.Lutz moves in the head coach position
after serving as an assistant with the pro-gram for the past three years. Lutz was ahead coach at Brookfield Academy for fiveyears prior to coming to the Falls program.
"It's been a real good transition,"Lutzsaid.
Starting quarterback Bryce McMurtryreturns and is accompanied by a new set of receivers. Three linemen return and thedefensive back return.
"It's a combination (of new and return-
ing starters) on both sides of the ball," Lutzsaid.
Falls has a numbers advantage for itsprogram, as Lutz noted he had to ordermore helmets for this season. There are 87
players on the varsity and junior varsitysquads. Lutz said tradition and a largernumber of seniors coming out for the pro-gram are part of the reasons for the largenumber of players.
While much is new, a first goal remainsthe same.
"Our first goal is always to make theplayoffs," Lutz said. "Do well, get a winningconference record, that's goal number one(which will qualify the team for the play-offs). Then after that, we'll see."
Lutz said his team "will be aggressive,we'll play with our heart and we'll playwith guts."

The offseason went well for theHamilton High School program. During anAug. 12 interview, Coach John Damatonoted that attendance in the weight roomwas around 95 percent.
"A mainstay of this program has beenour weight room and it has kept us com-petitive and it's getting us opportunities tobe successful," Damato said. "The seniorsdid an outstanding job of holding theirteammates accountable and we're hopingit's going to pay off."
The program has also held its own in
the number of players out for the program. There are around 43 players on the fresh-man teams while the youth program thatprecedes high school play is at the highestlevel in many years. There are around 65players on the varsity roster.
The offense continues to be the Wing Twith the play action pass while defensiveschemes remain the same. Damato said thespecial teams is "ahead of schedule."
This year's team returns three starterson offense and six starters on defense.
"We have some inexperience but we
have some great attitudes and some kidswho are competing day in and day out fora position," Damato said. "Going into thescrimmage (at Waukesha West Aug. 14)should tell us a lot about who we have mov-ing forward. I don't think I've ever gone intoa scrimmage with so many question marks, but at the same time in saying that it's not abad thing -- it's all about competition andthere's opportunity there with those ques-tion marks. The kids understand that."
Heading into the Waukesha Westscrimmage, Damato now has the advan-tage of the turf surface in the school's new
athletic center."It nice having both (turf and
grass fields), we've never had botnew for us," Damato said.
For all the change, this season said Hamilton will seek to probrand of hard, physical football.
"If the kids come and continueday in and day out, they're gointhemselves in a position to be suand compete for every game," said.
