TEAM CAPTAIN HANDBOOK

Susan G. Komen Arkansas Race for the Cure Race Date: October 19, 2013

Dear 2013 Team Captain:

Thank you for your interest in forming a Team for the 2013 Susan G. Komen Arkansas Race for the Cure® (the “Race”). This year, Komen Arkansas is celebrating its 20th Anniversary of fighting breast cancer in Arkansas. Teams participating in the Race play a vital role and make a huge difference in this fight. Honor breast cancer survivors, celebrate the lives of those who have lost their fight or show your support for Komen Arkansas and fellow Arkansans by forming a Team. Your leadership is essential to our success and we thank you for it! A Team is a group of 10 or more people who register for the Race through their Team Captain. Any type of group is eligible to be a team: businesses, families, schools, clubs, scout troops, sports teams, churches, friends, etc. In fact, we have 11 team categories. Your Team will join more than 40,000 participants on Saturday, October 19, 2013, in downtown Little Rock to celebrate and honor breast cancer survivors and remember friends and family who have lost their fight against this terrible disease. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at [email protected] or visit our web site at www.komenarkansas.org. Sincerely, Laurie Reynolds Shawna Long 2013 TEAMS Committee

Komen Arkansas: Our Story

Komen Arkansas was incorporated in 1992 by Terri DeSio, Pat McClelland and Pat Torvestad. Since its founding, the Arkansas Affiliate has held 19 Races for the Cure in downtown Little Rock, welcoming women, men and children from throughout the state.

Because of the Race, Komen Arkansas has distributed $13.2 million throughout the state of Arkansas, funding grants and educational programs that provide support and information (focused on early detection) to thousands of Arkansas women and their families. Of the money raised through the Race, 75 % stays in Arkansas to fund educational programs, while the remaining 25 % funds national research grants. Komen Arkansas has also contributed $4.6 million to breast cancer research.

2013 Race Chair – Mike Gavigan

Mike and his wife Mimi moved to Mimi’s home town of Little Rock ten years ago from Nashville, TN. Mike has two children, eight- year- old daughter Jamie and four- year- old son Murphy. Mike has served on the Race Committee for the last seven years as the Three Miles of Men Chair and Fundraising Chair. He also serves on the board for Komen Arkansas. “My mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago, had a double mastectomy, went through all the chemo and radiation. By the time of my wedding, she was cancer free and we danced all through the night. Seven years ago, the cancer came back, I felt helpless being 300 miles away, she in Nashville and me in Little Rock. So I got involved in the Race, partly as a way to help in the fight against breast cancer and partly as a way to cope with my mom’s struggle.” “The cancer finally won and my mom died in November 2006. It might have taken her body, but not her Spirit. She rallied time and time again, staying true to herself, acting with utmost grace throughout the whole deal. My family also rallied. Everyone from my father, my two older brothers and younger sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, friends from church, everyone was there for my mother and each other throughout the struggle. We were All In.” “I started to volunteer because I thought that was what I was supposed to do. Now having been deeply involved the last seven years, I continue to volunteer because I believe in the mission of Susan G. Komen. I see how electric and moving Race morning is. I see our money go to local grants all over our state. This Race touches and makes a significant difference in thousands of women’s lives in Arkansas.” Join me on October 19th and go All In for the fight against breast cancer. -Mike

2013 Honorary Survivor and Co-Survivors – Pam and John Hathaway

Pam was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer (invasive lobular carcinoma) in November 2012 at the age of 45. She had no family history of breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy in December 2012, and she is currently taking a four-month course of chemotherapy, to be followed by hormone therapy and reconstructive surgery. Pam is also participating in a study on lymphedema that she hopes will help other breast cancer survivors. As a long-term member of the Race Committee, she has seen the energy that goes into the Race and the inspiration and real impact that comes from it. Pam is a mother to two teenagers: Jackson, who will be a senior at Catholic High School this fall, and Caroline, who will be a freshman at Lyon College this fall. Her husband John Hathaway is a commercial real estate broker with CBC Hathaway Group. "We were completely shocked when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, but I decided quickly to face this challenge head-on, treating the cancer aggressively and openly sharing our story. We have been humbled and amazed at the outpouring of support – from delivery of meals to taking our cat to the veterinarian, not to mention innumerable prayers.” “When my hair began to fall out, I asked Caroline to cut it all off for me, and John volunteered to shave his head in solidarity with me. The whole process was captured on film. I wanted to share the experience, and I want to look back in ten years to see how far we've come. Cancer really is a family affair--everyone is affected, and everyone is on the journey with you. Now, the Race has taken on a new meaning for me, and I am very honored to be the Honorary Survivor Chair for this year's Race. We're all in!" – Pam

Pam’s Co-Survivor John adds… “Since the very moment Pam got the dreaded call that starts with “will you hold for the Doctor…”, our newly blended family has been challenged, and having the most wonderful woman you have ever known threatened and bullied by such a scary disease is no picnic. But! Cancer has once again underestimated its opponent, and we are doggedly determined to find all the silver linings during our cloudy time. Already, to that list we can add: Thankfulness for modern medicine and excellent care right here in Little Rock, Friends and family full of support, experience, and love, Appreciation for every minute we get to spend together, A prognosis that is generally positive, and that is where we like to focus!, Deeper love and understanding within our family, and… Hope and faith that together, with great attitudes and a dose of humor, we will jump right over this hurdle and leave it in our dust! Our entire family is truly “All In!”, and we look forward to this year’s Race for the Cure. We appreciate now, more than ever, the incredible work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. One final observation…Hair is largely overrated and practically unnecessary!” – John

TEAM INFORMATION CONTINUED Team Registration To register participants as a Team, you have three options:

1) Online Registration Each team member registers online at www.komenarkanas.org.

2) Offline Registration The Team Captain is responsible for distributing and collecting the paper entry forms and entry fees for team members and submitting them to Komen Arkansas by September 19, 2013. (see page 13)

3) Both Online and Offline Registration Team members register online and offline.

Although we love online registration, we understand that some prefer the paper entry forms. That is OK. For those team members who want to use the forms and give you the money, please process them using the information included in your Team Captain Handbook (see Offline (Mail-In) Team Member Registration). Other than your team t-shirt (if applicable), we will take care of everything for your team members who register online. Team Fundraising As the leader of your team, please share with your Team members the importance of fundraising. Simply registering and showing up on Race Day will raise awareness, but it is the fundraising dollars that will help find the cure and provide a much needed treatment and support to Arkansas women diagnosed with breast cancer. One of the best ways to inspire your Team to fundraise is to lead by example and start fundraising yourself. Once you have started your own personal fundraising effort, and you have some team members on board, get great fundraising ideas at your participant center. (see page 18) Check out the Team Awards section for information on how we thank our top performing teams and individuals.

What is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®? The Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the largest series of 5K runs/walks in the world. Of the net proceeds raised from the Arkansas Race, 25% goes to national breast cancer research (none goes to national overhead or expenses) and 75% stays in Arkansas to help organizations provide breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs through grants that Komen Arkansas awards each year.

Can Men sign up for the Race? Yes! This year men can sign up for the 5K, Family 2K and Three Miles of Men. As part of our 20th Anniversary and All In theme, men can participate alongside their loved ones in all facets of the Race!

When and Where is the 2013 Arkansas Race for the Cure®? Saturday, October 19, 2013, in downtown Little Rock and North Little Rock. Registration opens at 6:00 a.m. (for individuals who have not yet registered and are not on a team). NO SHIRTS will be given to those who register on Friday, October 18 or Saturday, October 19 unless they have a receipt with them.

What is the Race for the Cure distance? The 5K Run/Walk is 3.1 miles and the Family 2K Fun Run/Fun Walk is just over 1 mile.

Children over five years of age must register and pay the entry fee. When registering a child, if you want a child to have a Kids for the Cure® T-shirt, they must be registered for Kids for the Cure®. (Note: Kids for the Cure® T-shirts are only available in child sizes, while supplies last.)

22

What is Kids for the Cure®? This year, Kids for the Cure will be a specially designated area open from 6:45 a.m. – 7:45 a.m., Race morning. The exact location will be announced at a later date. There will be special activities for kids and will be a place for kids to hang out and have fun (with a parent of course) prior to the Race. This replaces the actual Kids race that has been held in previous years. Kids will now be able to enjoy a place just for them and then run/walk with Mom or Dad in the 5K Race or the Family 2K. The Kids area will close at 7:45 a.m. sharp.

Are strollers allowed in the Race? Yes, but all strollers must start at the back of the line for safety reasons. They will be asked to move to the back if they are not already there. Compliance is mandatory and required by Komen National.

Can someone who registered for the Family 2K Fun Walk/Run participate in the 5K (or vice versa)? If so, what do they need to do? Yes. Nothing. The two events are interchangeable.

Can someone who initially registered for Sleep in for the Cure® participate in the race? If so, what do they need to do? Yes. Nothing. Sleep in for the Cure® participants receive bibs just for that reason.

Why is there no more Train for the Cure? Train for the Cure program is only online in 2013. There are no training sessions at War Memorial Stadium. However, please sign up for the free, virtual training available on the registration page at www.komenarkansas.org. Each week, Little Rock’s own and past Race for the Cure winner, Leah Thorvilson will send emails with race training instructions.

Do all team members have to participate in the same event? No, they do NOT all have to participate in the same event. Some may choose to enter the Family 2K Fun Walk/Run while others enter the 5K. They can also be Three Miles of Men®, Kids for the Cure® or Sleep in for the Cure® participants.

When are team packets due? Offline packets are to be postmarked or hand delivered no later than September 19, 2013, to Susan G. Komen Arkansas Race for the Cure, 904 Autumn Road, Suite 500, Little Rock, AR 72211. Hand deliveries may be made Monday – Friday, 10 am – 3 pm.

For Teams with OFFLINE members within Bryant, Benton, Little Rock, North Little Rock, Maumelle, Sherwood and points in between, the Team Captain will be notified of times, dates and location to pick up. Teams outside of this area will receive their boxes via FedEx.

When I receive my box(es), who gets what? I did not receive a pink t-shirt, hat or bib for a survivor. Why? Someone made a mistake. Please accept our apologies. The incorrect bib can be taken to the Race Space to exchange it for a pink bib, pink t-shirt and hat. Go Pink for the Cure

Friday, October 4 will be Go Pink for the Cure Day all over the state of Arkansas.

Last year, 25 cities participated in this special day by encouraging their citizens to wear pink, decorating

their storefronts and offices with pink ribbons, holding health fairs and distributing breast cancer

information.

While these cities are Going Pink for the Cure on October 4, why not have your Team Go Pink for the

Cure also?

Go Pink for the Cure Day is a great way to raise funds for your Race for the Cure team! Besides raising

awareness and encouraging your team members to wear pink, you can host easy mini fundraisers to help

your team reach its fundraising goal! Below are some ideas, but don’t forget to think outside the box for

your own creative ideas!

Host a Pink bake sale at your place of business or other community location.

Hold a silent auction on Go Pink for the Cure Day.

Sell chances to win a prize (awarded on Go Pink for the Cure Day). Get inventive with your

prizes. They don’t have to be TVs and Ipads (although those are great!).

o If you work in an office building: What about a primo parking spot for a month? Or an

extra vacation day? Maybe lunch with the boss?

o If your team is a social or community group: Lunch with the mayor? Lawn care for 3

months? Carwashes through the end of summer?

Go All In and Go Pink for the Cure!
