Dustin list: Built for Robert A. Crowell, the son of and the successor to prominent Pasadena developer William C. Crowell, in 1931. Designed by architect Thomas Mulvin, the French Period Revival‐style home is distinguished by a steep cross‐gable roofline with lipped eaves, large bay windows and original wood details. The Crowell name left a big mark in both Pasadena and San Marino. William C. Crowell was one of the most well‐known builders in the area in the early 1900s and built many well‐known commercial, public, and school buildings in Pasadena and surrounding cities, many designed by notable architects such as Greene & Greene, Julia Morgan, Myron Hunt, and Gordon Kaufmann. Until 1938, the Crowell Company constructed all the buildings on the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) campus and the firm also built the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and the Pasadena Public Library among other iconic structures. Built for his son, Robert A. Crowell, who would later run the company, the elder Crowell built this French Period Revival home in 1931.The Robert Crowell House was designed by architect Thomas Mulvin and built by the William C. Crowell Company. A photograph of the house, taken shortly after its completion, can be found in the William Crowell collection at the Pasadena Museum of History.

No permits available. Date from assessor. Hearing for propsed residence in 1950, with another in 1961 for a carport. Owner was Arthur N. Young and his wife Nellie May Young. Arthur was a prominent economist, author, and trade adviser for the State Department. Arthur's daughter, Elizabeth was married to Phil Roulac, making him Phil's Father in law. Per the construction date, this home was built right as Arthur came back from an extended stint as a financial advisor for the Saudi government. While there's not evidence for an architect as yet, the aerial indicates a home that look almost "organic," with an integrated pool/jacuzzi that responds to the buliding in plan. While not visible from street, definitely worth looking into.

Hist Soc list. Pomeroy 2012:46 this was the Cooper ranch house, built btw 1857 and 1871 and moved here ca. 1903; "oldest lived‐in residence in San Marino." Is on 1870 GLO map, so using that date for now. Assessor has 1892 date. Not very visible from street ‐ looks altered. 1987 newspaper article from Joyce 5.21.19 notes it "has been expanded over the years" and "is now a five‐bedroom house." The owners (Leilani and Alan Wirick) were "repairing and replacing the 'widow's walk' that has distinguished the structure. Three of the four columns that at one time supported the front proch are now being preserved as a grape arbor. The fourth column has been lost." Article has photo.

Garage was permitted in 1942. No original permits for house. Building bio indicates reroofing in 1978 and a two‐story rear addition and a balcony at house's SE corner in 2001‐2002. Bio also notes other alterations in 2001: house extended 6 ft to south; front door relocated to east end of primary facade, replacing a window that was then moved to the door's prior position; new window opening added to library; new window opening at south wall of breakfast room; and interior alts.

Dustin list.: articles in Architect and Engineer, 14, 1937‐04 and Architectural Record, 66:4, 290, 1937‐04. In his article, "The American Colonial Revivalin the 1930s," architectural historian David Gebhard used the Townley House as an exemplar of the California Ranch house beginning to proliferate in the 1930s in all parts of the state. (See David Gebhard, "The American Colonial Revival in the 1930s," Winterthur Portfolio, vol. 22, no. 2/3, Summer‐Autumn 1987, p. 139.) In general, the house contained some of the same characteristics displayed earlier at William W. Wurster's Gregory Farmhouse, (Scotts Valley, CA, 1927), including the absence of ornamentation, multiple living porches, projecting living room, and rambling L‐shaped plan. The Townley House represented the suburbanization of the ranch house during the 1930s, when open and simple weekend houses like the Gregory House were formalized with specialized rooms‐‐breakfast room, dressing rooms, enclosed dining room and playroom‐‐and enclosed to the outside to a greater degree. The multi‐purpose, external corredor of the Gregory Farmhouse was notably absent in the posh San Marino environment. According to an article in the Architect and Engineer, the Townley House had "An unusual, rambling floor plan which includes child's play room and breakfast room...[and cost] approximately $7,000 to build..."
