INSTRUCTIONS & EXAMPLES

Surreal are real things in situations that seem as though they could happen only in dreams or the imagination.

A collage is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

FOR A MAJOR GRADE, YOU WILL CREATE A SURREAL COLLAGE

(THESE ARE EXAMPLES OF SURREAL COLLAGES. HOWEVER, YOUR COLLAGE SHOULD HAVE RUBBINGS & PATTERNS INCLUDED IN YOUR COLLAGE)

• 9x12 posterboard • a pencil• Copy paper • Construction paper• Magazines• Scissors• elmer’s glue• Crayons• ultrafine point sharpie• any other materials that you can use for a collage. • Optional: Exacto knife for small intricate cuts• Optional: modpodge paste

What will you try to say with this collage? What will it mean? Will the meaning be clear, or will it be more symbolic? Will it have a specific meaning or will it be vague? What would a dream be like if that emotion was at the heart

of that dream? How would an image convey that emotion? How would you conceptualize this image? What images could you put together to create this image? Have you thought about using symbolic images in place of

the obvious images to get your message across? How will you merge your magazine cutouts, frottage

rubbings, and any other art supplies to make this collage work?

IDEAS FOR YOUR COLLAGE

A dream that you have had in the past or that could be in a dream.

A situation that could be called surreal.

An emotion(love, hate, jealous, happy, excited, angry, fear, sadness, joy, disgust, etc

INSTRUCTIONS:PREPARING YOUR BACKGROUND

No white of your posterboard should be showing when you turn in this assignment. It is a good idea to put a wash of color(you can use your watercolors) over your whole posterboard or stain it with tea or coffee to get rid of the stark whiteness.

Look though magazines or use old photos to find large images that could help act as part of or act as all of your background

INSTRUCTIONS:PREPARING YOUR CUTOUTS & RUBBINGS Look through magazines and

cutout a variety of images that would go well for your concept idea while remember the questions you read earlier to help ignite creative merging of images.

Have some frottage rubbings readily at hand that were left over from your skills assignment or create more frottage rubbings. Get creative with what shapes you want to cut from your rubbing papers.

Arrange your cutouts you want to use on your 9x12 posterboard.

Before thinking about gluing down any of

your cutouts or other materials, ALWAYS test different ways in which you could arrange your cutout shapes and rubbings to make the best composition on your posterboard.

Once you have a nice arrangement for your collage, you can start gluing. Be very generous with Elmer’s glue when gluing down your pieces but do not over glue either. Use your finger to spread the glue on each piece making sure to spread all the way to the edges.

INSTRUCTIONS:ARRANGING YOUR CUTOUTS & GLUING THEM DOWN

• After gluing all your pieces down, let it dry completely before going on to the next step.

• Use a ultrafine sharpie to outline

some or all of your cutouts to help unify your juxtaposed images. You can also give textured details in some places of your collage to help unify it as well. Details could consist of adding patterns, rhythm, shapes, outlining items throughout collage, etc.

• This step is optional: If you have mod podge paste at home, you can put a coat over the whole collage to seal it. It goes on white wet, but dries clear.

INSTRUCTIONS:FINISHING TOUCHES ON YOUR COLLAGE

Based on one of the three concepts: dreams, emotion, or surreal situation

Artwork has surreal qualities: dreamlike or from the imagination….could not be in real life

Variety of sizes of magazine images juxtaposed together to create new surreal imageries.

Texture and/or rubbings are evident throughout artwork Background is interesting and no white of paper showing All added images or textures & rubbings are glued down

securely with no loose edges Some or all of your images or textures & rubbings are outlined

using a ultra fine point sharpie. Added details are encouraged. Online Ethics was followed in completion of this assignment Craftsmanship is evident throughout the artwork Completing this rubric /self evaluation
