• Surrealism is a term that refers to a heightened

sense of reality; translated from French, the

term means: “over-realism”-- a vision of

reality that supersedes the mundane!

Rene Magritte was a Belgian surrealist

painter.

He painted in a realistic

style. While the objects

appear to the viewer to

be recognizable, the

composition of those

recognizable objects

appears fantastic.

Magritte was deeply

interested in the

process of thought,

and his paintings

tend to raise the

awareness of the

viewer to their own

thought processes.

• More often than not, Magritte chose ordinary things from which to construct his works - trees, chairs, tables, doors, windows, shoes, shelves, landscapes, people. He wanted to be understood via these ordinary things, but he also wanted to shock and surprise his viewers.

Salvador Dali 1904-1989

Dali was a leader of the Surrealist Movement, but begin to clash with the rest of the Surrealist and was expelled from the group in 1934. His most well known painting is of the image of melting clocks called, “Persistence of Memory”

Surreal Collage Drawing

Find at least 3 images to cut out from the magazines and use them in your drawing.

Projects will be graded on:

• Craftsmanship- cut very carefully, no glue showing, scribble coloring, etc.

• Creativity: how creative were you in creating your collage drawing?

• Skill: how does this artwork compare to the work you have done in the past?

You can use collage as the main part of your artwork,

or your drawing can be the main design with the collage as an addition.

Using the collage to create one image: a face for example, with a touch of drawing for detail.

Today…

• Find, cut out, and save as many images as you can that might help you create a surreal collage. (put them in your sketchbook or box)

• Using those images, sketch out some ideas that you might want to do for your drawing.

• Remember to cut with good craftsmanship…

• no jagged lines
