Celebrity quizmaster CJ de Mooi, who starred on BBC TV show Eggheads and is the charity’s patron, will be hosting the fund- raiser on Friday, May 24. The event is open to teams of between four and six people and will take place at Homewood Road United Reformed Church from 7.30pm. Tickets costs £6 per person or £22 for teams of four and can be purchased in advance from The Crescent in Russell Avenue or on the door. A TEAM of quiz boffins swapped the boozer for a television studio when they went head-to-head with the formidable Eggheads. The contestants, made up of a group of local businesswomen, will appear on the BBC2 general knowledge show after they proved they had the brains to take on the UK’s top quiz champions. Calling themselves Business Belles, the team decided to audi- tion for the programme during one of their regular evenings at a pub quiz in St Albans. Quizzer Frances Pardell, who submitted their application, said: “I love watching Eggheads and sug- gested that we apply as a joke. I never expected that we’d actually get on the show. “The production company 12 Yard audition hundreds of people around the UK so competition to get on Eggheads is fierce.” The five-strong team sailed through the London auditions and were the only competitors to answer every question correctly. This earned them a ticket to travel to Glasgow to try and out- smart the Eggheads and take home a cash prize. While the Business Belles are keeping schtum about the outcome, team captain June Cory said: “We had an absolute ball, it was a bril- liant experience. “We spent four hours being treated like TV stars, but any- one who wants to know how we got on will have to wait until the programme is on BBC2 in the autumn.” The Business Belles from St Albans with the Eggheads and show host Jeremy Vine at the studios in Glasgow News A MARRIED surgeon has been struck off the medical register after a tribunal ruled his sexual relationship with a patient has impaired his fitness to practice. Dr Jonathan Beacon, 66, had an 18-month affair with a 39-year-old woman who was referred to him for knee surgery at the Elms Consult- ing Rooms in Hall Place Gardens, St Albans, following a motorbike accident. At a Medical Practitioners Tri- bunal Service (MPTS) hearing on Monday the panel ruled the sur- geon had breached his position by engaging in a sexual relationship with a “vulnerable” patient and banned him from practising medi- cine. MPTS panel chair Dr Linda Buchanan said: “The panel has determined that Mr Beacon’s con- duct has seriously undermined the public trust in the profession, and that an order of erasure is necessary to ensure the protection of patients, the maintenance of public confi- dence in the profession, and the declaring and upholding of proper standards of conduct and behav- iour.” The affair between the father-of- three and the woman lasted from December 2006 to July 2008 while she was being treated by him. During the hearing the panel considered suspending Dr Beacon, who also held private consultations at the Spire Hospital in Harpenden, from the medical register but deemed his actions to be too seri- ous. They also said they could not be satisfied his misconduct would not be repeated. Dr Beacon’s name will be struck off the register in 28 days from Monday’s ruling unless an appeal is lodged. To cover this period the panel has suspended his registration with immediate effect. He was not present or repre- sented at the Manchester hearing.
