The annual St Gemma's Hospice Garden

Party took place recently and we were very

happy to see the weather held up for the

day. Your local team were there with a stall,

providing crime prevention advice with a

`meet your local PCSO` event. The stall was

fronted by PCSOs Phil Cannon and Michelle

Winn. PCSO John Hutchinson also attended

later to join in and help ensure parking went

smoothly. The event was well attended and

successfully raised funds for St Gemmas

Hospice.

With live performers all day, face painting,

giant jenga, giant snakes and ladders, exotic

pets, hook a duck and other fun games to

play it was a fun packed event. The

Wetherby Lions mascot also got in on the

act with PCSOs Cannon & Winn. If you’d like

to know more about the great work St

Gemma’s do, or you’d like to help out with

fund raising, find out more at

On behalf of Friends of Allerton Grange Fields, we are delighted to inform you that Allerton Grange Fields has secured the prestigious Green Flag Community Award 2016 after being mystery shopped by a Green Flag Awards judge. Green Flag Awards is the national quality benchmark for parks and greenspaces and is great recognition of the work of the volunteers in partnership. The judges observed that: "No dog fouling

was evident on the site and one member of the public was observed picking up mess from their dog. There was good signage around the site about the issue". Friends of Allerton Grange Fields have been working in close partnership with the LCC Dog Warden Service since the start of the year on implementing the 'Allerton Grange Fields Dog Fouling Strategy' which has been very effective in addressing the issue of dog mess. Harriet Chaplin (Dog Warden) and her

colleagues in the LCC Dog Warden Service were instrumental in helping to address dog fouling at Allerton Grange Fields. PCSOs at West Yorkshire Police NPT have, over the years got to know the volunteers and have actively helped litter pick, plant trees, plants bulbs and create floral displays at Allerton Grange Fields. We hope that the awards continue to come in the future!

Here are some simple tips for road safety awareness and safe parking:

1. Park safely, considerately and legally.

2. If at all possible give yourself more time and park a short walk from school. It’s healthier and involves less stress.

3. Do not exceed legal speed limits - they are there for a reason.

4. Remember that speed limits are a maximum not a target - often it is more

appropriate to drive well within them.

5. Look for speed limit signs and make a point of knowing what the limits are on your local roads.

6. Set realistic journey times.

7. Don't be pressured by tailgaters to speed.

8. Choose the right gear to maintain control of your speed.

9. Read the highway code to find out more about speed limits.

10. Be an ambassador for driving within the legal speed limits - if you comply the chances are others will too.

** 'EVERY LITTLE HELPS' FOR THE COMMUNITY **

Here are PCSOs John and Michelle, along

with volunteers and MP Fabian Hamilton, at

Tesco on Roundhay Road recently,

supporting a food bank initiative.

From the 30th June to 2nd July, all UK Tesco

stores hosted a food collection for either

The Trussell Trust or FareShare, as part of

the eighth Neighbourhood Food Collection.

There are regular collections here and in

other local supermarkets where residents

can donate. Thanks to the help of kind

donations from the public, much needed

food has gone to those in need in Leeds.

Here is a picture from a recent summer gala that was held at Lidgett Lane Community Centre. PCSOs Michelle Winn, Andy Ross and John Hutchinson helped by assisting with the setting up and taking down of stalls. They remained at the event and

spoke with people visiting the gala and enjoyed the face painting, bouncy castles, food and drink. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended from Moortown Station, where children enjoyed sitting in the fire engine and Police van. The weather

was touch and go, with breaks of heavy wind and rain, but spirits were not dampened. Sunny intervals helped cheer the mood too!

We recently went along to join in the fun at the Fever FM open day. The local team were totally over overwhelmed by the hospitality and kindness of the community in Harehillls and Chapeltown at the Fever FM radio

station. During difficult times when we may sometimes question if we have the support of the community, the team went home feeling very valued by the people we serve. As you can see we even caught the interest

of some potential new recruits of the future. As Sir Robert Peel said "the police are the public and the public are the police"

After concerns were raised about speeding motorists, Ward Officers for Moortown and Roundhay deployed the Speed Indication Device (SID) on Stonegate Road, Moortown and Park Road, Roundhay. We continually review roads which are problematic for speeding and the Speed Indication Device allows us both to put in place a visual deterrent and raise awareness simultaneously. Curbing speeding is particularly important in residential areas

where children may be around. Many car drivers unintentionally exceed the speed limit, often without realising it. Modern cars are so powerful and comfortable they give drivers little sensation of their speed. It is too easy to creep above the limit. Give yourself time to get where you’re going and don’t take the risk, there’s no need to speed.

Green Fingered Explorers

On Wednesday 29th June the East Leeds Police Explorer group had their community volunteering session – the aim of this session was to get out of the office based learning environment and get out and about within the community, to undertake some active volunteering work and really make a difference. The East Leeds Explorer group supported ‘CATCH' (Community Action to Change Harehills) at The Hub. The Hub is a community space based on Hovingham Avenue in Harehills setup by CATCH in

partnership with West Yorkshire Police and Leeds City Council and is a registered charity. Check out their Facebook page to understand more about what they do: www.facebook.com/TheHubHarehills

15 Explorers, aged 16-18 years old, did an incredible amount of work including planting, painting, grass cutting, etc. at their new community premises. They were also given an overview of CATCH by PC Ash Razzaq who set this scheme up (and

recently received an MBE for this work), and supported by East Leeds Explorer Supervisors PC Karen Kear and PC Nigel Brown. A fantastic achievement in such a short space of time - helped by the rain staying away!

Wetherby Duck Race 2016, organised by the Wetherby Lions, went 'swimmingly' on Wednesday 10th July. With almost 2,000 ducks let loose it was quite a spectacle. The

day itself was a great fundraiser, with what seemed like the whole of Wetherby turning out! The Duck Race event takes place every year and has done so for 25-years now. It

was a pleasure for us to be part of the great community spirit and see so people having fun racing their ducks! PCSO Lou Crossland even caught a stray one!

A Quacking Fundraiser

Fraudsters are sending out distressing messages to parents in the hope that they will reply and send mobile phone top-up voucher codes. Victims initially receive a text message from a loved-one which says they are in hospital and that the only way that they can make contact is via text message. One example message reads: “Mum i did try and phone from some else phone signal is really bad, there has been a terrible car accident. I’m in the ICU ward in hospital my phone ain’t switching on and needs charging. I’m on this mobile number please make sure you reply to this number, my friend didn’t make it he died before we got to hospital and his sister’s fighting for her life. Mum i had my seatbelt on, i’ve got a head injury but i’m ok. Going into Xray to be seen, please make sure you message me back and don’t phone cause mobile phones aren’t allowed here so please text in case I’m in there. I will go outside and phone you mum its really bad i need you to do me favour before it’s too late, as soon as you

get my text please reply by text i need you to do me a favour mum, time is running out and i need you to do something mum”. After responding to the message, the fraudsters ask victims to purchase a mobile phone top-up code and text it back to them. Once the fraudsters have the code, they can get the cash credited to their own mobile phone account. These messages can quite easily evolve into more elaborate scenarios and are designed to play on your emotions and get you to react quickly without thinking. If you receive one of these text messages, don't send any codes or money, delete it and report it to us. If a family member was hospitalised, they would never be forced to use a mobile phone that required credit to activate it.

To report a fraud call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

An initial grace period to allow owners to get their dog microchipped after a change in the law is drawing to a close. As of 6 April 2016 it became mandatory for all dogs over eight weeks old to be microchipped and the details stored on the microchip database up to date. The council will start enforcing its new legal powers from 1 July to ensure people to get their dogs chipped. The three month grace period was to allow owners to take appropriate action. All dogs the council’s dog wardens come into contact with are scanned for a microchip. From 1 July, if any of these dogs aren’t microchipped, wardens will offer to arrange this for owners. If this offer is declined, a new enforcement notice will be issued. This legal notice instructs owners to have their dog chipped within 21 days. If dogs still aren’t chipped after this period owners face prosecution. If convicted, the maximum fine is £500. The new law also gives the council powers to take dogs from owners to microchip them and pass on any costs to the owners. Dog wardens have been working with the Dogs Trust for some time to offer microchipping. In the last three months dog wardens have microchipped 300 dogs free of charge at community events. Vets can also microchip dogs. Gavin Jarrett, dog warden said:

“We want to reassure people that they aren’t going to be hit with an automatic £500 fine if their dog isn’t microchipped now.

“If people point blank refuse to get their dog chipped that’s when we’ll be issuing the legal notices. Failing to comply with notice could then result in prosecution. “We think the costs and benefits of

microchipping far outweigh a potential £500 fine and a criminal conviction so we’d really encourage people to do the right thing. “If people need any information about microchipping or where to get it done, they can contact us for advice.”

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, executive member for environment and sustainability said:

“A quick check of our found dogs Facebook page will tell you that we are still picking up too many dogs without any form of identification.

“It’s in your and your dog’s best interest to be microchipped so if they stray or get lost it will make it much easier for us to reunite you.

“We’ve given people extra time to make sure they are on the right side of the law. However, as people have now had plenty of fair warning, we will be enforcing the new legislation.”

Owners can contact the dog warden service for advice about microchipping on 0113 222 4406. Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are inserted into the loose skin between a dog’s shoulder blades with a sterile needle. Implanting the chip will feel like a standard injection for a vaccination. Compulsory microchipping and ensuring details are up to date will help ensure stray, lost or stolen dogs can be identified and reunited with their owners. All puppies over eight weeks old must now be chipped so they can be traced back to their breeder. If selling your dog or giving it to a new owner, the dog must be microchipped before you do so. It’s up to the new owner to ensure their contact details are registered.

Dog Microchipping Grace Period Over

MICROCHIPPING FACT FILE

As of 6 April 2016 dogs over eight weeks old must be microchipped. The only exclusions are dogs that are certified by a vet to be a working dog or where a vet provides a certificate for the duration of a dog’s illness stating that it cannot be chipped for health reasons.

Details that have to be registered include:

Full name and address of keeper, and telephone number(s)

Dogs name, sex, breed (or description), colour, date of birth (or accurate estimate)

License details for breeders if the breeder is also the dogs’ keeper. Also need to state which local authority the breeder is licensed by.

If the microchip database doesn’t hold this information, or the information isn’t up to date, the dog may be regarded as not microchipped and subject to enforcement.

No keeper may transfer a dog to a new keeper until it has been properly microchipped.

Where a dog is transferred to a new keeper, the new keeper must record their full name, address, telephone number and change of dogs name (if applicable) with the database.
