At long last! Breakfast at the Rhinecliff! We were all so excited to have had our first breakfast at the Rhinecliff Hotel on Wednesday, June 25. We can’t thank James Chapman and his team enough for pulling out all the stops to make this happen! It is clear that James and his crew took their time to meticulously recreate a by-gone era and payed attention to so many wonderful details to keep the charm and historic integrity in that wonderful building. Thank you, too, to everyone who attended. I was sorry I could not stay for the entire breakfast. However, my 5th grader was having her “moving up ceremony” at Chancelor Livingston Elementary School, so, “mommy duty” called! The summer will be busy for the Chamber. We will be continuing conversations with the Village to clarify the policies, laws and procedures surrounding sidewalk sales and sidewalk displays. At the next Village Board meeting on July 8th a recommendation will be made as to how to proceed with sidewalk sales in the future. The Chamber will continue to play a role in these in terms of coordination and applications for permits. We will keep all of you posted as to the final outcome, and the Public Hearing that is anticipated. We will also be fully engaged in supporting the Holiday Parade – Sinterklaus is coming to town! And we will continue to be involved with that event, planned for December 6, 2008. Further, the Chamber Board of Directors will hold a half-day retreat to set the priority projects and carve out the next year’s operating and strategic plans. We will also host several special events over the coming summer months, including a Family BBQ on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. The Chamber can be a very valuable tool for your business. Together, we can make a visible difference in our community. I applaud each of our board members who give so much of their time to ensuring that the Rhinebeck Area Chamber continues to focus on its mission of supporting and promoting local businesses. And I appreciate each and every one of our members who continue to make the greater Rhinebeck region the very special place that it is. Sincerely, Deborah S. Spotlight on chamber memberscommunity support, both private and commercial, has been amazing and truly inspiring.”

The Rhinebeck Science Foundation selected science, technology and math as its focus for two main reasons. “First,” explains Rhinebeck Science Foundation Treasurer Andrew Schulkind, “the U.S. is being outpaced by India, China, and Eastern Europe in creating science scholars. It makes sense to enable our children to compete in that market. Second, science education helps develop critical thinking, and the methodology for processing information which is useful in all kinds of problem solving.”Given the Rhinebeck Science Foundation’s early success in fundraising, it has already been able to finance the purchase of a spectrophotometer for the High School and microscopes with projection systems for the Elementary school.

“It has been an amazing and ongoing process working together with the administration, school board and teachers to move the Rhinebeck Science Foundation’s mission forward,” says Diane Kantaros, a Rhinebeck Science Foundation Board Member and its principle grant-writer. “We are grateful for the support of Superintendent Joe Phelan, the Rhinebeck School Board, Marvin Kreps, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the building principals and Rhinebeck’s dedicated teaching staff.”

For more information about the Rhinebeck Science Foundation, you are encouraged to visit the Rhinebeck Science Foundation website (www.rhinebecksciencefoundation.org). If you or your business is interested in joining the growing community members who are making financial contributions to the Rhinebeck Science Foundation, call Rhinebeck Science Foundation President Jennifer Hammoud (845) 876-0748 or Foundation Vice President Diane Kantaros (845) 889-4155.

The rhinebeck Science foundation In order to enhance the science, math and technology education for students in the Rhinebeck Central School District, a diverse group of Rhinebeck residents have founded the Rhinebeck Science Foundation. This not for profit foundation will award grants that promote creative, hands-on, problem-based learning, in the Rhinebeck public schools providing our students with the skills needed to compete in a global market that is increasingly based in science, math and technology.

Dean Vallas, an ex-officio member of the Rhinebeck Science Foundation Board as well as a member of the Rhinebeck Schools’ Board of Education, explains the increasing popularity of community foundations that support public education. “These community supported endowments are an effective way of involving the community in enhancing public education. Better schools,” Vallas explains, “mean more than just smarter kids. Better schools also mean a stronger and more vibrant community, a richer pool of employees for local businesses and the opportunity for children to make a greater contribution toward solving some of the big science and technology issues.”

Created in 2007, the Rhinebeck Science Foundation has set a goal of creating a one million dollar endowment from which five-percent will be awarded in grants annually. The rest will be invested to ensure the Foundation’s survival in perpetuity. “At first, raising that kind of money seemed like a daunting task,” explains Jennifer Hammoud, the President of the Rhinebeck Science Foundation Board. “But, with the support of our School District Superintendent, Joe Phelan, and the excitement in the community, we have already raised twenty percent of our goal in a very short period of time. Special announcement

Dear Members: It is with great disappointment that the Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce Board accepted Julie West’s resignation at last Thursday’s Executive Committee meeting. Julie has decided to pursue another opportunity and not continue with us. Sophie Clark is covering the office while we search for a new Executive Director. At this time, the office will be open the following hours:

Monday - Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Our Information Booth will be open the usual hours.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Chamber President, Deborah Breen, at 845.871.3501 (work) or 845.206.7314 (cell).

Finally, the agent becomes the client. In the storms that we had last week I suffered damage at both my home and my office. Let’s look at these scenarios and see what will be covered, if anything, and if it is covered, how much will be covered. I will start with my office some of you may have even seen the tree down. We lost about half of an 80 year old oak across our parking lot. It did not hit any “covered property”. This is the most important factor of this loss because since it did not hit any “covered property” there is no debris removal coverage. Therefore Fraleigh and Rakow will have to bear the expense of cutting up and removing the tree. By bearing the cost that means Addam goes out borrows a chainsaw and removes as much of the tree as possible to keep the cost down. This is the same in personal lines insurance, if a tree comes down on your property and does not hit “covered property”. Covered property can be defined as Real or Personal property located at the defined premises on the policy. These are things such as Dwellings, commercial building, garages, fences, playsets, pools etc. I mentioned earlier in this article that I suffered a loss at my home as well. I had a tree come down into my above ground pool. It crushed several panels and was deemed not to be repairable therefore it must be replaced. Great, that means I will get a new pool courtesy of my insurance carrier! Wrong! Pools are specifically carved out of the replacement cost provisions of most all insurance policies. That means they are covered for actual cash value which is the replacement cost minus depreciation. That means if I have a $5,000 pool that is 10 years old and the depreciation factor for a pool that age is .50 then I will get a check for $2,500 less my deductible. I knew this is the way the settlement would come out but if you were not familiar with the policy forms your policy contains this could be a huge shock. The good news is the pool is considered covered property so the debris removal coverage was triggered. I will get the $500 debris removal sublimit to have it removed from the pool and from the property. Thank you for reading and participating and remember “don’t be cornered by your coverage.”

This column is strictly for general insurance information please consult your local agent for the specifics of your insurance program.
