Komatsu America Corp. recently introduced the D61EXi/PXi-23, Komatsu’s first intelligent Machine Control model to the North American market. Thanks to its first fully automatic blade control, the D61i-23 dozer can perform not only finish grading, which has been possible with conven-tional Machine Control, but also rough dozing. As a re-sult, it achieves outstanding improvement in productiv-ity. This is the first machine using this new innovative technology, and it is scalable to other products manufac-tured by Komatsu.

“We are excited to bring to market the next gen-eration of machine control technology with Komatsu’s “intelligent Machine Con-trol D61i-23,” said Peter Robson, Director of Intel-ligent Machine Controls. “The ease with which the D61i-23 transitions from rough dozing to finish grad-ing with automatic blade control engaged is so seam-

less that both experienced and inexperienced opera-tors will notice benefits.” Robson continued, “The efficiency improvement, greater value and simplic-ity of operation of the D61i-23 exemplify the leading innovations that customers have come to expect from Komatsu.”

Longer track-on ground standard (EX) and low ground pressure (PX) mod-els are available to offer customers flotation and weight distribution options that best match their appli-cations. Operating weights range from 39,441 lbs. to 41,381 lbs. depending on the configuration with a net 168HP at 2200 rpm.

The D61i-23 also fea-tures the integration of Komatsu’s proprietary KOMTRAX (Komatsu Ma-chine Tracking System) and TOPCON’s construc-tion management system. In the near future, this in-tegrated system will enable high-efficiency, unified

management of construc-tion work through access to real-time machine data, via its web service, to track work progress including the amount of soil dozed at jobsites. Innovative: Fully Automatic Blade Control For Rough And Fine Dozing

While crawler dozers have been able to per-form high-precision finish grading after installing an add-on machine control system, the D61i-23 can perform rough dozing as well as finish grading in automatic mode, thanks to its fully automatic blade control. When rough doz-ing, the automatic blade control monitors blade load and adjusts blade el-evation to minimize track slip and perform high-ef-ficiency dozing. As work progresses closer to the target finish grade, the automatic blade control adjusts accordingly to provide finish grade per-

formance with high-level precision. Improvement in combination rough dozing efficiency is up to 13% higher compared to add-on machine control systems.

“The innovation is not only that Komatsu can pro-vide the customer with ful-

ly automatic blade control for automatic rough dozing and efficiency improve-ment,” states Robson, ”but also that Komatsu is able to offer this technology while maintaining finish grade performance in the D61 dozer size class which is one of the most popular

size class dozers for ma-chine control usage.” D61i-23 dozer

With the D61EXi/PXi-23, typical add-on machine control system components mounted on the blade have been replaced with fac-tory installed cab top GNSS

(Global Navigation Satel-lite System) antenna, en-hanced inertial measuring unit (IMU+), and stroke sensing hydraulic cylin-ders. These components along with the machine control monitor and con-trollers mounted inside of the cab are installed at the Komatsu manufacturing facility during machine as-sembly, ensuring a quality installation with reliability.

“The integrated sensor package is not only robust and accurate but also elim-inates the daily hassles of installing/removing GNSS antenna(s) and cable(s) from the blade, plus the wear associated with it,” explains Robson. “The famed quality and custom-er support our customers have come to rely on with Komatsu machines is now extended to the machine control system itself in the case of the D61i-23.” Intelligence: Enhancements For Optimized Performance

Inside the cab, customer selectable dozing modes allow system response to be tailored to the current machine operation for op-timized performance. Simi-larly, blade load settings are

adjustable between pre-sets to match actual material conditions. Pass to pass, the intelligent Machine Control system can be left with the automatic blade control en-gaged because of its ability to precisely automate the lowering of the blade at the start of a pass and raise it at the end of a pass.

When the machine trav-els around the job site, the cab top GNSS antenna col-lects accurate surface data by measuring actual eleva-tions. The stroke sensing angle cylinder measures the actual angle of the blade for high precision grading accuracy on cross-slope, blade angled or not.

Robson concludes, “The included value of all the added intelligence features on top of innovation and integration really drives up the value proposition, for both existing machine control users and new ma-chine control users.” KOMTRAX

The D61i-23 crawler dozer is equipped with the latest KOMTRAX technol-ogy, which is fully integrat-ed with Komatsu’s Tier 4 technology and sends ma-chine operating informa-tion to a secure website uti-lizing wireless technology.

Hour meter, location, cau-tions, load ratio, fuel con-sumption and maintenance alerts – to name a few of its features – are relayed to the web application for analysis. The KOMTRAX fleet monitoring system increases machine avail-ability, reduces the risk of machine theft (compared to machines not KOM-TRAX-equipped), allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiency and productivity. Customer peace-of-mind is standard because of Komatsu CARE

Komatsu remains fo-cused on lowering the cus-tomer’s ownership costs by engineering machines with increased fuel efficiency and productivity. Kom-atsu CARE complimentary scheduled maintenance is standard on the D61EXi/PXi-23 crawler dozers for the earlier of 3 years or 2000 hours. Services are performed by factory certi-fied technicians using only Komatsu genuine parts and fluids. Also included are complimentary KDPF ex-changes at 4,500 hours and 9,000 hours in the first five years. b

Provident Develop-ment has been selected as one of five Canadian builders chosen to be part of a national initia-tive to develop net-zero homes. As a part of this project, Provident De-velopment has agreed to plan and build a min-imum of five net-zero energy homes by 2016.

Over $4 million in funding and in-kind contributions from the federal ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII) and the build-ing industry will allow for the construction of at least 25 net-zero energy homes in four provinces: Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. ecoEII will be providing $1.96 million in funding for profes-sional services required for the planning, design and construction of the houses. The remaining funds will come from Owens Corning Canada, builders and the build-ing industry in the form of in-kind contributions

to fund the construction of the homes.

The idea of a net-ze-ro energy (NZE) home is that it uses enhanced energy efficiency design strategies to cost ef-fectively reduce energy needs while supple-menting with renew-able energy technolo-gies, with the result that the building consumes equal to or less energy than it produces on an annual basis.

Building homes with a focus on energy ef-ficiency is not new to Provident Development. Beginning in 2009, Provident has worked on building homes to the specifications of the federal EnerGuide Pro-gram. Since 2010, Prov-ident Development has been the recipient of the Annual Peak award (from the Nova Scotia Home Builders’ Asso-ciation) for building the most EnerGuide homes in the province. Partici-pation in the net-zero energy housing initia-

tive is a natural exten-sion of this work.

“We are excited about participating in this new initiative and furthering our efforts in acceptable consumer design and the use of cost-effective products and procedures,” says John Greenough, Presi-dent, Provident Devel-opment. “We believe this is the future of the energy efficient hous-ing industry and look forward to providing input to create net-ze-ro housing that will be suitable for production building. This project will hopefully make it possible for more fami-lies to share in the ben-efits of net-zero energy homes.”

Owens Corning Cana-da is working with five homebuilders to test the feasibility of developing net-zero homes at the community level.

Technical design, planning and training processes are already in progress. Home con-struction is expected to begin this year. The loca-tion for Provident Devel-opment homes has not yet been determined. b

Nova Scotia Home Builder To Participate In EcoENERGY Innovation Initiative

Canada’s “Parks Day” was in July, and it offered an opportunity to celebrate the living legacy being cre-ated by Parks Canada to protect and present Cana-da’s great outdoor places for present and future generations. This sum-mer, team members at Bruce Peninsula National Park were working full out to restore habitat within the park, creating a better home for wildlife on the Bruce Peninsula.

Created in 1987, Bruce Peninsula National Park did not come fully pack-aged and assembled. While a park boundary has been established, many parcels of land within that boundary were owned by private landowners. The park has been acquiring property on a willing seller, willing buyer basis ever since. Properties that the park is slowly acquiring are places where people have lived, farmed, or worked.

Parks Canada has na-tional standards for the protection, preservation, and presentation of park properties, and Bruce Pen-insula National Park is working to bring recently

acquired lands up to these standards. Work this sum-mer has focused on sites that were mostly used for agriculture, but historical-ly, they would have held hardwood forests, which are now relatively rare. By planting over thirteen thou-sand trees this summer, the park is working to reintro-duce hardwood forest on the peninsula. The trees were planted in coopera-tion with the Grey-Sauble Conservation Authority with substantial assistance from the province of On-tario’s 50 Million Tree Pro-gram.

“While we could prob-ably get some great You-Tube video by offering a 3 bedroom bungalow to a family of black bears, the park is really focused on creating suitable and con-nected habitat that will support the diverse range of animals that call the park home,” said Frank Burrows, Superintendent, Bruce Peninsula National

Park. “The work we are doing will help ensure that future generations of Cana-dians will be able to come here to connect with nature and discover the beauty of an incredible and diverse landscape.”

The active manage-ment techniques that the park is implementing are helping to restore the con-nectivity of natural eco-systems within the park. Farms, houses, roads and industry create bar-riers that fragment and affect animal habitat. By re-naturalizing recently acquired property within the park boundaries, these human created barriers are being removed. This will directly benefit wild-life populations like black bear and forest birds by helping to limit predators and invasive species.

Parks Canada works to ensure Canada’s historic and natural heritage is pro-tected and, through a net-work of 44 national parks, 167 national historic sites, and four national marine conservation areas, invites Canadians and people around the world to en-gage in personal moments of inspiring discovery at our treasured natural and historic places. b

Hamilton residents and visitors will now en-joy a cleaner, more natu-ral harbour, thanks to the completion of important improvements to Hamil-ton’s wastewater treatment infrastructure, including the naturalization of the Wind-ermere Basin. Representa-tives from the governments of Canada and Ontario, and the City of Hamilton recent-ly gathered to celebrate this important milestone, which contributes to Hamilton Har-bour remediation efforts.

“The improved waste-water treatment system and Windermere basin are major achievements in support of the ongoing clean-up of Hamilton Har-bour,” said the Honour-able Peter Kent, Minister of Environment. “Our gov-ernment is proud to have invested in cleaning efforts that will help the environ-ment, improve quality of life for Hamilton residents and that has created jobs.”

“Investing in local infra-

structure renewal will build stronger communities and improve Hamilton residents’ daily lives,” said the Hon-ourable Jeff Leal, Minister of Rural Affairs for Ontario. “The Wastewater Treatment and Windermere Basin proj-ects demonstrate the On-tario government’s ongoing commitment to work with our federal and municipal partners to address the prov-ince’s infrastructure priori-ties.”

“This program of work represents a large-scale project that we could not have completed without the generous support from our federal and provincial partners,” said Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina. “The Windermere Basin project resulted in the unique cre-ation of new wetland space providing much needed habitat for fish and wild-life. All of these efforts con-tribute to our local goals for the remediation of Hamil-ton Harbour.”

The project will enhance

the quality of life for visitors and residents in the City of Hamilton and contribute to public health improvements and the protection of the environment. The positive results of this work will also help remove Hamilton Har-bour from the Area of Con-cern list under the Canada – U.S. Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

The project has three components that will con-tribute significantly to Ham-ilton Harbour’s clean-up. First, improvements were made to the Dundas Waste-water Treatment Plant’s dis-infection system to ensure the removal of chlorine in the plant’s effluent. Second, new systems were put in place to control the flow of sanitary sewage and storm-water to reduce untreated discharge into Hamilton’s Harbour. Finally, the natu-ralization of the Winder-mere Basin – the water body that receives wastewater ef-fluent from the Woodward treatment plant on its way

to Hamilton Harbour – has transformed an open body of water with limited natu-ral value into a 13 hectare healthy Great Lakes coastal wetland.

The Government of Canada contributed $35 million toward this project through the Canada Stra-tegic Infrastructure Fund; the Government of Ontario contributed $15 million, with the City of Hamilton providing the balance of the funding toward the $80 million project.

Canada’s Economic Ac-tion Plan 2013 is delivering a New Building Canada Plan to build roads, bridg-es, subways, commuter rail, and other public in-frastructure in coopera-tion with provinces, terri-tories and municipalities. Thanks to the Government of Canada’s leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamen-tals, the Canadian econ-omy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrial-ized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 1,000,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.

McElroy, the leader in thermoplastic fusion tools, recently introduce a new socket fusion kit for use with popular polypropyl-ene-random (PP-R) pipe and fitting sizes. The kit offers an easy ordering op-tion for those working with 20 through 63mm diameter pipe and fittings.

The McElroy Polypro-pylene Socket Fusion Kit includes a 16 to 63mm socket heater, 20 to 63mm socket heater adapters, storage box, socket adapter tray, heater sling, heater bench mount, heater sup-port frame weld, socket fusion specification chart, depth gauge tool and 1/4-inch Allen driver.

“Contractors don’t want to individually specify all the heater adapters and tools they might need on the job,” said Chip McEl-roy, President of McElroy. “With this socket fusion kit, the customer gets a great set of tools for the

most popular pipe and fit-ting sizes. The storage box is designed to hold all of the adapters and tools in a very organized manner.”

McElroy’s Socket Tool-ing equipment meets ISO 15874, DIN 16962 and DIN 8077 pipes and fittings specifications. McElroy’s Socket Fusion Heater in-cluded in the kit provides microprocessor controls to precisely set and moni-tor heater temperature in all field conditions. The heater is also fully field serviceable, including the electronics. A long 20-foot power cord minimizes the amount of electrical con-nections that are needed to operate the equipment.

The socket adapters that are included within the kit features durable Teflon-coated surfaces, with the pipe diameter size and part number etched into the flat, non-coated back.

The New Building Canada Plan, combined with other federal infrastructure in-vestments, will support Canada’s infrastructure advantage, a key enabler of economic growth and job creation.

These investments sup-

port Building Together, the Province of Ontario’s long-term infrastructure plan to repair, rebuild and renew the province’s roads and highways, bridges, public transit, schools and postsec-ondary institutions, hospi-tals and courthouses. Since 2003, Ontario has invested

approximately $85 billion in infrastructure. Building modern, efficient infrastruc-ture has created or pre-served close to 100,000 jobs each year, on average, mak-ing Ontario’s economy more productive and improving quality of life, now and in the future. b

Since 2008, Energias de Portugal (EDP), the larg-est electric utility company in the country, has been building the Baixo Sa-bor hydroelectric plant in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo. Registered within the National Plan of High Potential Hydro-electric dams, this facility will enter into service in

August 2014, with an in-stalled capacity of 170 MW and generating up to 444 GWh per year. Comprised by two dams, the main one is located upstream of the Sabor River and set 9.5 kilometers apart from the downstream one, that will flood an area over 50 km, thus creating the third larg-est lake in Portugal.

The temporary consor-tium Baixo Sabor ACE, formed by Odebrecht / Bento Pedroso Construções and Lena Construções is the company responsible for the construction of the dams, with a budget of over 480 million euros (around 643 million U.S. dollars). The jobsite will employ up to 1,675 people, with an ex-

cavation volume of around 3,000,000 m3, where a vol-ume of 1,100,000 m3 con-crete shall be used.

The magnitude of the project also requires a large amount of machin-ery. Therefore, Linden Co-mansa’s official distributor in Portugal, Ibergru, has supplied to the jobsite 15 flat-top tower cranes from the Spanish manufacturer, with maximum load in a range between 5 and 48 tons.

The main plant, located upstream, is a double-cur-vature dam and will have a height of 123 metres and a width of 505 meters. Four tower cranes are being em-ployed in its construction, all Linden Comansa, model 10LC140, with maximum load capacity of 8 tons.

The assembling of two of these 10LC140 cranes was a challenge due to the difficult accessibility. However, Ibergru found a solution that allowed to ef-ficiently use the available resources on site, saving other costs. To pour large amounts of concrete, many dams, including Baixo Sa-bor, use an air transport

system with cables, very similar to the cable car, called blondin in honor of Charles Blondin, a famous French tightrope walker of the 19th century. Ibergru proposed to the site manag-ers the utilization of these blondins in the assembling of the two 10LC140 cranes, a very unusual solution that was not only success-ful but also cost-effective.

Next to the upstream station, a LC5211 5t tower crane is constructing a building that will be part of the administrative fa-cilities of the dam, and two 5LC5010 with maximum load of 5 ton work as ser-vice cranes in the yards that serve as warehouse and workshop of the job-site materials.

The secondary plant, of gravity type, is located downstream closer to the river’s mouth, will feature a height of 45 meters and a width of 315 meters. The five largest tower cranes working in this project are the following: two 21LC750, with up to 48 tons capacity, and three 21LC550 with maximum load capacity of 18 tons.

Another 5LC5010 with maximum load of 5 tons is working as service crane, helping to manage the ma-chinery and materials re-quired on the site.

In addition, two Linden Comansa 21LC290 cranes, with maximum load capac-ity of 18 tons, are working in the construction of a new bridge with 268 me-ters of length and 40 me-ters of height. Located near the downstream plant, this bridge will allow the EN102 road to cross the river, since the current Portela Bridge will be submerged by the waters.

Ibergru, Linden Co-mansa’s official distributor in Portugal since 2002, par-ticipates in the project not only supplying the rental cranes, but also contributing with its experience in large scale projects and advising the jobsite management in choosing the right equip-ment for each task. Ibergru has planned, coordinated, and executed all logistics en-tailed by the erection of the cranes, in conditions of dif-ficult accessibility given the complex topography of the jobsite. b

Although our histori-cal forefathers remain

important figures in the creation of the country, Canada’s growth and de-velopment is also a di-rect result of the unsung people who laboured with their machines to build the country we know today. And this story can be found in the hearts and minds of the 350 volunteer members who make up the Historical

Construction Equipment Association of Canada (HCEA), a group formed in 1996 dedicated to preserv-ing the antique equipment of the past while recording the construction history of Canada for the next genera-tion.

The non-profit HCEA has spent the last 17 years expanding and restoring their collection of artifacts, including the horse-drawn

equipment used at the turn of century through to the diesel equipment used in the 1940s and 1950s. With approximately 45 pieces of equipment, 75 per cent of which are operational, some artifacts are the only machines of their kind in existence. “Our circa-1917 Buckeye Trencher is among the oldest pieces of construction equipment still around,” says HCEA

Canada President, Frank Rooney. “We are also very proud to have two built-in-Montreal vintage Dominion Shovels in operating con-dition.” HCEA volunteer members have also spent more than three years re-storing a 1929 Adams #10 Grader, a labour of love that required the overhaul of every major component including the engine, trans-mission, gear boxes, and

moldboard.Although many of the

HCEA members are from the construction sector — operators, mechan-ics, welders, and others — there are also lawyers, accountants, and teachers who are involved. “Many realize that an effort should be made to preserve our Canadian construction heritage,” Rooney says. “HCEA Canada provides a unique opportunity.”

The organization oper-ates in partnership with the Simcoe County Museum near Barrie, Ontario. The Museum provides a home for all the equipment, and is the site for shows and demonstrations. In addi-tion to more formal volun-teer duties, such as demon-strating and operating the historical equipment for visitors at annual events, members can also serve on a variety of committees, work at the Museum, or

take on a restoration proj-ect. Rooney says that there are an unlimited number of tasks to fit every kind of interest and skill level. “Preservation of heritage is essential,” he says. “As my old uncle used to say, ‘Well, son, hard to tell where you’re going if you don’t know where you came from.’” b

Bombardier Aerospace and WestJet recently an-nounced the delivery of the first of 20 Q400 NextGen turboprop airliners ordered by WestJet. The aircraft will be operated by the new regional carrier, West-Jet Encore and will serve multiple destinations, be-ginning in Western Canada in its first year of service. WestJet also holds options for 25 additional Q400 NextGen aircraft.

Earlier this year, West-Jet announced plans to begin service with Encore on June 24, 2013, open-ing new routes to Fort St. John and Nanaimo, British Columbia, as well as Bran-don, Manitoba, on Sep-tember 3, 2013. Flights to points in Alberta and Sas-katchewan are to be added later this year, along with additional flights to cities already served by WestJet.

Bombardier Aerospace recently hosted a special

delivery ceremony in To-ronto alongside more than 100 WestJetters, including Gregg Saretsky, President and Chief Executive Of-ficer, WestJet and Ferio Pugliese, President, West-Jet Encore, and Executive Vice-President, WestJet. Also on site in Toronto, where the Q400 NextGen airliners are manufactured, were Mike Arcamone, Pres-ident, Bombardier Com-mercial Aircraft, Simon Roberts, Vice-President and General Manager, Tur-boprop Programs and the Toronto Site, Bombardier Aerospace and guests from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

“WestJetters have been looking forward to this mo-ment since the Q400 Next-Gen demo aircraft touched down in Calgary for the first time last year. Today, we are thrilled that this great Canadian turboprop will be the backbone of West-

Jet Encore’s operations, servicing new destinations and effectively connecting more cities,” Mr. Pugliese said. “With an unmatched balance of speed, comfort, cost efficiencies and highly regarded environmental qualities, the Q400 Next-Gen aircraft will also allow us to operate more effi-ciently as we enhance ser-vice on more routes. This versatility opens up many new possibilities and op-tions for Canadians, as well as increases the frequency of flights to better serve travellers.”

“It was a delight to see the Q400 NextGen turbo-prop unveiled in WestJet’s iconic colours as WestJet Encore now officially kicks off its Q400 aircraft’s west-ern-Canada migration,” said Mike Arcamone, Presi-dent, Bombardier Com-mercial Aircraft. “WestJet has enjoyed remarkable growth since its inception,

and as a productivity ma-chine, our made-in-Canada Q400 NextGen aircraft is well equipped to support that tradition and to meet the needs of both this great Canadian airline and its guests. This very versatile aircraft is efficient on short-haul missions or can use its speed to reach regional destinations farther afield, making it competitive with jets on longer sectors -- a perfect fit for WestJet.”

WestJet began opera-tions in 1996 with 220 em-ployees, three jets and five destinations. Today the airline has more than 9,000 employees, over 103 air-

craft and serves 86 destina-tions in North and Central America and the Carib-bean.

Bombardier has booked firm orders for 468 Q400 and Q400 NextGen air-craft. Worldwide, Q400 and Q400 NextGen aircraft have transported more than 243 million passen-gers and have logged over 4.2 million flight hours and more than 4.5 million take-offs and landings in service with close to 50 operators in over 30 countries in five continents.About Q400 NextGen aircraft

The Q400 NextGen

turboprop airliner, which is built at Bombardier’s Toronto, Ontario facility, is the most recent devel-opment in the evolution of the Q400 aircraft, and the advanced successor to Bombardier’s Dash 8/Q-Series family of aircraft. Optimized for short-haul operations, the “comfort-ably greener,” 70- to 80-seat Q400 NextGen aircraft is a large, fast, quiet and fuel-efficient turboprop. It provides an ideal balance of passenger comfort and operating economics with a reduced environmental footprint. b

Ford is proving that pickups can be green and tough by adding rice hulls to the list of sustainable materials used to build F-150 – America’s best-sell-ing truck.

Ford is using plastic re-inforced with rice hulls – a byproduct of rice grain – in an electrical harness in the 2014 F-150. The company will need at least 45,000 pounds of hulls in the first year.

“The 2014 F-Series ex-emplifies our continued efforts to use recycled con-tent in our vehicles,” said John Viera, Ford Global Director of Sustainability and Vehicle Environmen-tal Matters. “We can have greater impact in this case because of the size and sales volume of this prod-uct.”

The rice hulls are sourced from farms in Ar-kansas and will replace a talc-based reinforcement in a polypropylene composite made by RheTech, a Whit-

more Lake, Mich.-based automotive supplier.

“We developed this resin specifically for Ford over the last three years, working with the automak-er closely, including in all phases of material qualifi-cation,” said David Pres-ton, Director of Business Development for RheTech. “The whole process has been a rewarding success for both Ford and RheTech, which can add yet another natural-fiber based product to our RheVision line.”

Rice hull-reinforced plastic is the most recent example of Ford research-ers and engineers us-ing sustainable material whenever possible in the F-Series – without com-promising toughness and durability. F-Series trucks already feature:• Recycled cotton: Used

as carpet insulation and a sound absorber; ev-ery 2014 F-150 contains enough recycled cotton to make the equivalent

of 10 pairs of jeans;• Soybeans: Used to make

seat cushions, seat backs and head restraints;

• Recycled carpet: Some F-150 trucks have cyl-inder head covers made with EcoLon, a nylon resin produced from 100 percent post-consumer recycled carpet;

• Recycled tires: A ther-moplastic material made from recycled tires and post-consumer recycled polypropylene is used to make shields and some underbody covers on F-150;

• Recycled plastic soda pop and water bottles: A lightweight fiber de-rived from recycled plas-tic soda pop and water bottles is used to con-struct F-150 wheel liners and shields. The parts are significantly lighter than traditional injection molded parts and lead to a quieter ride. Select F-Series trucks feature fab-ric made from recycled

fiber; • Recycled post-industal

plastics: Used in interior finish panels, including around radio and climate controls. Researchers in Dear-

born are constantly search-ing for the next sustainable material that can feasibly be used in Ford vehicles. Finding a source of mate-rial is only the beginning of the process, however, because before making it to production, components made from recycled con-tent must perform as well or better than comparable virgin-grade material.

Materials development engineers at Ford Materials Engineering, Testing and Standards in Dearborn, in conjunction with RheTech, conducted testing of the rice hull material for more than a year, examining everything from smell and appearance to functionality and flammability. The rice hull-based material suc-cessfully passed all tests.

With F-Series as Amer-ica’s best-selling truck for 36 years – averaging more than 650,000 sales per year – the environmental impact of being as sustainable as possible adds up fast. Ford estimates about 10 million pounds of recycled cotton

are used in F-Series trucks annually.

“Fuel economy is a top priority when it comes to Ford’s environmental im-pact,” says Carrie Majeske, Ford Product Sustainability Manager. “But we also rec-ognize the tremendous im-pact that can be made by using sustainable materials inside our cars, utilities and trucks.”

The eco-friendly as-pects of F-Series extend to the powertrain. The available 3.5-liter Eco-Boost engine combines technologies typically as-sociated with heavy-duty truck diesel engines – tur-bocharging and direct fuel injection – in a gasoline engine. The engine deliv-ers fuel economy gains of up to 20 percent, while re-ducing CO2 emissions by

up to 15 percent.Further, the 2014 F-150

equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 engine will be available this fall with a factory-in-stalled package that allows the engine to operate on either natural gas or gaso-line through separate fuel systems.

The complete F-Series Super Duty pickup truck and chassis cab lineup is available with gasoline, diesel, B20, and dedicated compressed natural gas or liquid propane gas capabil-ity, or CNG/LPG bi-fuel ca-pability, while Ford F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks can be outfitted for gasoline, biodiesel or CNG/LPG operation. In addition to biodiesel and CNG/LPG offerings, the 6.2-liter V8 can operate on E85, an eth-anol-gasoline mix. b

As of July 1, Équipe-ments FDS Inc. has been appointed the exclusive Ammann compaction and paving equipment dealer in the Province of Quebec.

“We are thrilled to add Équipements FDS to our network of dealers across Canada,” says Peter Price, Area Sales Manager of Ammann Canada. “Pierre Boisvert and his experi-

enced staff of industry professionals will not only provide excellent, ongoing service to our existing cus-tomer base in Quebec, but will also introduce the Am-mann compaction and pav-ing product line to a whole new group of equipment users. We could not be more pleased to now have Équipements FDS in the Ammann Canada family.”

Opened in Terrebonne in 2006, Équipements FDS Inc. is a sister company to the longstanding Quebec and Maritimes crane and lift industry supplier, Consul-tants F. Drapeau Inc. With large, modern facilities in Terrebonne, just north of Montreal and in Beloeil on the South Shore, Équipe-ments FDS Inc. represents a diverse product offering,

supported by parts and ser-vice partners throughout Quebec. Established prod-uct lines represented in various geographical mar-kets include Sany cranes and port equipment, Atlas truck cranes, Dieci telehan-dlers, Altec boom and scis-sor lifts, Terberg forklifts and Kimble mixers.

The addition of Am-mann compaction and paving equipment is “the perfect complement” to the Équipements FDS Inc. product offering, says Pierre Boisvert, FDS Sales Director. “It’s only natu-ral for us to sell a world-renowned, top-quality

compaction product line like Ammann”, Boisvert explains. “Lifting and com-paction equipment are used by our customers at various stages throughout any construction project,” he says. A 30 year veteran of the Quebec construc-tion equipment industry, Boisvert says the addition of Ammann to the Équi-pements FDS Inc. offering will allow him to intro-duce the product line to new customers, as well as extend their brand of after sales service and support to the many existing Am-mann customers through-out Quebec.

As soon as Équipe-ments FDS Inc. became the authorized Quebec dealer for Ammann, Price and his staff were onsite providing Ammann sales and parts training for the

Équipements FDS team. According to Boisvert, in the first week, Équipe-ments FDS Inc. had already completed two sales to a customer who has come to rely on Équipements FDS Inc. for his lifting equip-ment and service. Owning a boom truck, two scis-sor lifts, a telehandler and now two compaction units all from Équipements FDS Inc. makes sense to this particular customer, based three hours north of Mon-treal, says Boisvert. “He told us, ‘When you send your mechanic to do the maintenance on my ma-chines, he will do all of my machines at once. I don’t want anybody else near my machines’.”

“Wherever an Ammann customer is located in the Province of Quebec, they will have full parts and service from Équipements FDS,” vows Boisvert. “Our business is based on service.” Going back 40 years with Consultants F. Drapeau, this founda-tion of equipment mainte-nance, parts, warranty and certification has resulted in constant sales growth for the organization in recent years. With many custom-ers already relying on Équi-pements FDS Inc. for their equipment service, the in-troduction of Ammann to the market has proven a good fit for both customers and the dealer.

He explains, “We’re very confident we’ll have similar strong results with the Ammann compaction and paving equipment as we’ve had with the other products we have launched. We know, like the other product lines, it is a quality product.” b

Gehl, a leading manu-facturer of compact equip-ment for construction and agriculture applications, headquartered in West Bend, Wisconsin, announc-es an important engine up-grade on the RS5-19 Tele-scopic Handler. The EPA certified Tier IV Yanmar 69 hp (51.5 kW) naturally aspirated engine meets the latest emissions standards. This recently upgraded model is available in North American markets.

The Gehl RS5-19 is de-signed with a compact frame and tight turning radius of 11 feet (3.35 m), allowing it to manoeuvre in low buildings and confined job sites. The RS5-19 is a low-profile machine with an overall height of 6’4” (1.93 m), making opera-tion in buildings, garages and in confined areas easy.

The boom reaches to a height of 19’1” (5.8 m) and features the same welded box-section design that is on the proven Gehl Dyna-lift telescopic handlers.

Internal wet disc service brakes are standard equip-ment, for better stopping capability and longer life. A SAHR (Spring-Applied, Hydraulic-Release) parking brake, which is automati-cally applied when the en-gine is shut off, or manu-ally engaged by pressing a rocker switch, is also stan-dard.

The view from the spa-ciously designed ROPS/FOPS canopy is a full 360 degrees. An enclosed cab is optional with front and top windows, a door and a heater/defroster for use in areas where operators need protection from the weather. Optional air-con-

ditioning is also available for further climate control.

Two direct mechanical joystick controls for boom and fork tilt functions are standard. The controls are easy to reach and smooth to operate, optimizing operator precision and productivity. A deluxe suspension seat is optional. A work light pack-age can be added to further increase the productivity of this machine.

Engine accessibility is made simple with a large, hinged hood on the side of the machine. The hood lifts fully out of the way, allowing plenty of room to access maintenance points, including the battery and oil fill. Underneath the unit Gehl has added a bolted belly pan to protect all en-gine and hydraulic com-ponents. A hinged access door provides easy access

to the engine oil drain.Hydraulic flow up to 20

gpm (76 L/min) provides excellent hydraulic per-formance. Optional auxil-iary lines power a variety of available attachments, including, truss booms, jib booms, buckets and multiple types of carriages and forks. The Dynattach Quick-Attach System al-lows quick attachment changes with unsurpassed ease. The hydraulic hoses are routed inside the boom

protecting them from job-site hazards.

The RS5-19 telescopic handler was designed to meet the growing needs of contractors, builders and rental firms for a 5,500 lb. (2495 kg) lift capacity ma-chine. By incorporating all the features and benefits of the proven Gehl RS Series and DL Series telescopic handlers, the RS5-19 tele-scopic handler will be not-ed as best-in-class in this growing market sector.

“The compact telescopic handler market in North America in 2012 was over 2,000 units or 15 percent of the total market,” says Steve Kiskunas, Gehl Tele-scopic Handler Product Manager. “The three most popular markets for these units are rental, general construction and agricul-ture. The RS5-19 provides a versatile four wheel drive, four wheel all-terrain plat-form for a number of appli-cations.” b
