Superintendent's Message On Saturday, December 10, 2017, I was joined by over seventy guests at the Winter Formal, one of the traditional annual events at NYMA. Here are a
few photos that recorded the memorable moments…
This year we will be holding our Winter Formal on February 10th at the West Point Officer’s Club. You should have already received a formal invitation.
If for any reason you have not received one, another copy is included at the end of this newsletter. The Winter Formal is a JROTC event which is planned
and implemented by the cadets themselves. It is intended to instruct cadets in proper etiquette in a formal setting. I am confident that the cadets and
their guests will enjoy the experience.
Many of our cadets and staff members have helped host three visiting students from Taiwan for the past three weeks. On January 28th twenty-five more
exchange students will be joining us for two weeks. They will shadow some classes in the morning and attend ESL classes in the afternoon.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Dean’s News NYMA is finally experiencing the kind of problem that every private school wishes for…fuller classes.
As a result of the most recent admissions to the corps, our Biology class became larger than the small
size that we are striving to keep. Dr. Gastel is seen on the left teaching the new section of Honors
Biology that was just formed. Students are learning using the Harkness Method or discussion-based
teaching.
The second visit from the ROTC
instructor from Fordham University
took place today. Our cadet leaders
delivered a briefing about their
individual leadership positions and
discussed what changes they are
trying to bring about within the Corps
of Cadets. They did an amazing job
and should be very proud of
themselves.
I have begun a new initiative for those
students that I feel are in need of
additional academic assistance.
Beginning this Sunday evening,
students will be sent to the library on
the evenings that the corresponding teacher is on duty in any course that they have earned below a grade of 70. Of course, students are always welcome
to go to the library voluntarily, but this program will mandate their attendance on certain evenings. It is our objective to provide every student access
to any extra help they may need.

Our immensely talented Cadet Serena Yang created her own stop-motion animation film. She created original drawings under the guidance of Ms. Simon,
our also immensely talented Fine Arts Teacher. Serena’s voice can be heard narrating the film and it is her original piano score that is playing in the
background. It is really quite an amazing piece of work. You can click on this link to experience it: www.nyma.org/2018/01/18/a-snake-tale/
With exams and the inclement weather behind us, we were able to resume our Service
Learning Wednesdays once again. The culture service learning group is collecting deposit
bottles and cans this quarter in order to raise money for Cornwall Backpacks for Food. The
organization provides nutritious meals every weekend for students who receive federal free
lunch in the Cornwall School District. The bottles and cans are being collected in three
collection sites including Mrs. Harrell's room in Scarborough Hall, the Academic Office, and Dr. Webb’s room. To learn more about this worthy cause, please feel free to visit their site at
www.cornwallbff.org.
Thank you to our faculty and parents that donated their gently worn outerwear towards our
coat drive. This past Wednesday, Sarah Magno and I took Cadets Beller, Walker, and Avarez
to the Newburgh Ministry to donate all of the items that were collected. We were given a
tour of the facility as well as an explanation of all of the wonderful work the ministry does.
They offer a full gamut of services ranging from a warm communal area where people in
need can grab a coffee or snack to a homeless shelter where people may stay until they get
back on their feet. They store and sell all sorts of clothing items that have been donated and
are made available at minimal cost or free if necessary. We were told that they could really
use shoes and boots as well as consumables like diapers, toilet paper, and hygiene products.
The students came away with a real sense of pride for what we had contributed and an
overall sense of gratitude.
On the morning of the Winter Formal (Feb. 10th) from 9:00-11:00 am, several NYMA Cadets will be helping with Operation Cookie Deployment at the
Cornwall Presbyterian Church. They will be helping pack boxes for our soldiers overseas. If you would like to join us or donate prepackaged food items,
please contact Samantha Hill at Ext. 4819. You may also drop your contributions off to the Academic Office and we will see that she gets it. I have attached
a list of items at the end of this newsletter that the church is saying are in particular demand.
Our book making service group returned to Butterhill Day School once again to
read to the preschoolers. The students commented that they realized now how
difficult it is to teach. There is always such a beautiful exchange between our
students and the wee ones. Thank
you to Ms. Hill, Ms. Pasquale, and Ms.
Simon for nurturing this endeavor.
College acceptances are really
starting to pour in now. Ms. Magno
was able to snap this photo of Captain
Charlie Qin as he opened one of his
acceptance letters in the presence of
new cadet Bill He.

Just back from her admissions interview with a Princeton alum, Amanda Beller found an audience of
proud educators to share her excitement with. Good luck Amanda…Princeton University would be
lucky to have you!
From the Admissions Office
We have had some awesome new cadets join the academy to start off our second semester and we
are still working on enrolling a few more. Please share the great things NYMA is doing with your
friends and co-workers.

10:00 am and personalized
campus tours are done every
school day. Please get in touch
with Admissions to schedule one.
Admissions Guides
Another great cadet was awarded the Admissions Guide Ribbon. Cadet Veronica
Walker has not only volunteered at Open Houses and been so wonderful with her singing at athletic events, but she went above and beyond to help
share her school with others. A family was very late to the last Open House; they arrived practically at the end. Veronica and another cadet still graciously
offered to show the family around campus even though the other cadets were headed back to the barracks for some well-earned down time. Thank you
for your dedication to your school and for stepping up and doing what needs to be
done!
From the Athletic Department Congratulations to Senior Zamere McKenzie who was selected as a nominee to this year’s McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Team.
On Saturday, 1/20, the Varsity
Basketball Team was back in action
after a month off and some weather-
related cancellations. NYMA (5-2)
played host to a very talented
Springfield Commonwealth
Academy team. NYMA won by a
score of 75-69. The Knights were
led by Zaahir Woody who finished
with 33 points. Zamere McKenzie
and Brandon Evans each added 11
points while Josh Antoine had 9.
Will Mayfield and Jalen Ricks scored
6 points each.
NYMA Wrestling kicked off their season on Saturday, 1/20, at Loomis Chaffe. Overall
it was a good day for the young Knights who won four matches and lost six. Eighth-
grader Nathan Kratman won both his matches, sophomore Matthew Montes won one,
and freshman Kobe Parker won one match as well.
On Monday, 1/22, The Varsity Basketball team (6-2) traveled to Marvelwood for a
HVAL game. NYMA won an impressive victory by the score of 78-30. The Knights were
led by Zaahir Woody with 19 points, Zamere McKenzie added 13 points, Josh Antoine

had 12, Will Mayfield and Brandon Evans had 9 points each, Karif Isaacs had 7, and Nigel Petti-Fernandez finished with 4 points. Jalen Ricks, David
Pinto-Ricardo (in his first career start), and Mickey Urso each had 2 points as well.
On a more important note, Will Mayfield got a chance to experience Burger King for the very first time! Needless to say, he loved it. In his own words,
It’s good! Better than McDonalds!
On Wednesday, 1/24, we had a busy day at NYMA as JV
Basketball hosted Upper Room Christian from Long Island,
Varsity Basketball hosted Oakwood Friends, Bowling had its
first matches of the season, and Wrestling had a multi-event at
Avon Old Farms. There they competed against Woodhall, AOF,
and Taft.
JV Basketball lost to Upper Room Christian by a score of 76-68.
Remy Sykes and Bob Wang led the team in scoring with 8 points
each.
Varsity Basketball beat Oakwood Friends 73-26. NYMA was led
by Zaahir Woody who finished with 23 points. Other cadets who
chipped in included Brandon Evans, Zamere McKenzie and Karif
Isaacs with 12 a piece while Will Mayfield added 8 points. Jalen
Ricks finished with 7 points and 10 assists.
The Bowling team’s first match of the season was against Storm
King. We bowl the best 2 of 3 games and Storm King came out
hot winning game one 146-80. But Games 2 and 3 were
won by NYMA giving us a big first win (Game 2: 74-65,
Game 3: 107-65). Notable players in this match were
Adam Sun and Simon Lin who bowled clutch shots to
secure a NYMA victory for this first big match. NYMA’s second match was against Faith Christian Academy.
NYMA beat FCA in game one 80-53, but games 2 and 3
were won by FCA (77-60, 94-76). We tried our best, but
came up short in the end. The next match is at Pat
Tarsio Lanes on Wednesday, 1/31 at 3:00pm if anyone
would like to come watch!
On Wednesday, 1/24, the NYMA Wrestling Team
participated in its second JV Jamboree of the season.
The wrestlers traveled to Avon Old Farms School to
wrestle The Taft School, Avon Old Farms, and
Woodhall School. The Knights finished the day 5-5-1.
Mr. Roselli was very proud of the way the team wrestled and continues to see improvement as the year progresses. This is a rebuilding year for the Knights. This year’s team members are Matthew Montes (team captain), Jamel Pauletta, Donovan Green, Tim DelUniversita, Kobe Parker, Nathan
Kratman and Daniel Geng. The Knights have four more matches left on their schedule.
GO KNIGHTS!!!
Commandant’s Notes It’s been a productive week at NYMA. The snow has melted, our marching is improving, and new cadet leaders are settling into their roles. Please
remember to mark your calendars for our most elegant event of the year, the Winter Formal, happening on February 10th. You will be receiving your
invitation very soon if you haven’t already. We are pleased to host our cadets at The Officer’s Club of West Point for a beautiful evening with their friends, family, and dates! It will be a nice trip away from campus and hopefully a refreshing change to our schedule during the winter weekends.
Counselor’s Corner Greetings! Saturday SAT Prep starts back up tomorrow (1/27) and we are excited to have Dr. Webb and Mr. Roselli helping our cadets with their test-
taking skills and their SAT studying. If you are interested in signing up for the course, please feel free to reach out to me.

As we receive more and more college acceptance letters for our seniors, I would like to remind our juniors and their families to keep looking at colleges.
Think about what type of school they would like to attend or what programs they are interested in. I would like to take some of our juniors to visit
colleges during the spring so if they have any in mind, please tell them to let me know.
For those seniors still working toward upcoming deadlines, make sure that they are giving themselves enough time to edit their essays and review their
application questions. If you have any questions regarding applications or any other paperwork, please do not hesitate to ask.
Have a wonderful weekend!
From the Activities Coordinator Yee-haw! This weekend we are getting back to basics with some good ol’ fashion fun. Saturday evening, we are hosting BINGO in the library. There will be music, light refreshments, and of
course, prizes! Sunday, we are having a horseback riding activity at Ivy Rock Farms, a local
stable located in New Windsor.
In February we are also offering a couple of chances for cadets to gain community service hours.
Next Saturday we are making fleece tie blankets for children in hospitals for the local chapter of
Project Linus. If you would like to donate fleece or your time to help us, that would be wonderful.
I can be reached at [email protected]. We are also working on another service-related event to
help a local church pack food items for our troops overseas.
Have a great weekend!
