Residents, holidaymak-ers and tourists should be proud, and fully sup-port and embrace the Blue Flag beaches. These five beaches will have clean and functional ab-lution facilities that are maintained seven days a week during the Blue Flag season by municipal and Working for the Coast staff. There will be quali-fied lifeguards on duty at all the beaches, with the exception of Middle beach, Kenton-on-Sea, which is not a swimming beach.

Out of Blue Flag sea-son the ablutions will be looked after by the Working for the Coast

staff for the beaches, with Kelly’s Beach also having a municipal staff mem-ber present. A dedicated team from the Working for the Coast programme will be posted seven days per week during the Blue Flag season at each of the five beaches to ensure it is kept clean according to Blue Flag Standards. This service will continue for the duration of the Work-ing for the Coast contract period.

Sea-water samples will take place as required by Blue Flag standards and environmental manage-ment principles will be adhered too. Environ-mental education pro-

From Left Minister of Tourism (Marthinus van Schalkwyk); Fanie Fouche (Ndlambe Deputy-Director: Community Protection Services) and Dr Thommie Burger (Chief Ex-ecutive Officer of Wildlife and Environmental Society of Southern Africa - WESSA)

grammes will be carried out throughout the year on the beaches.

The Blue Flag programme promote tourism in the area and work opportunities in the form of lifeguards, access control, maintenance, cleanli-ness of beaches and area, etc. each year Ndlambe munici-pality apply for full status for their beaches by submitting a Portfolio of Evidence ensuring compliance with 32 criteria. Based on the performance and

random unannounced visits by the National Blue Flag Coordi-nator and/or International Jury members, an evaluation is carried out whether a beach obtain a Blue Flag annually.

Ndlambe is proud of Kelly’s Blue Flag Beach that this year will be waving the flag for the ninth consecutive year in a row since 2005 and Kariega Main Beach for the fifth year in a row since 2009. That is an achievement worth noth-ing as very few beaches coun-

try wide has maintained their status for so long without los-ing or dropping their flag. It proves yet again that Ndlambe can maintain the status for these beaches coming into the programme.

In the Eastern Cape there are eighth Blue Flag beaches, five of them are under Ndlam-be municipality. In the Cacadu District Municipal area there are six Blue Flags and Ndlam-be municipality got five out of six.

Ndlambe municipality is

confident that with the close working relationship with the Working for

the Coast projects, five Blue Flags

will be flying over the beaches in

Ndlambe. Knowledge is key in sustaining our pristine beaches and as such stimulating information is read-ily available at the attractive educational centre at Kariega Beach.FrONT PAGE PHOTO CrEDiT: reean Fourie

NOTICE NUMBER: 215/2013 ADV. R DUMEZWENI MUNICIPAL MANAGER

Save the Soetbev Swimming Centre FOUR years ago the Port Alfred indoor heated pool appeared to be at the end of its lifespan but it was Anette Crous’s vi-sion and drive to realise a far greater community project that ultimately saved this rec-reational hot spot. Now as we near the end of 2013 af-ter years of personal sacrifice from Anette and in spite of in-credible community support the Soetbev Swimming Centre is once again facing challenges that threaten its sustainability and requires your support.

Through Anette’s vision to create a trust for woman and children in Ndlambe, a section 21 company, Valley of Hope (VoH), was established. “VoH is a registered Public Benefit Organisation that serves as an umbrella organisation for vari-ous community projects, one of which is the heated indoor swimming pool, the Soetbev Swimming Centre,” Anette said.

“The VoH Project is now the official fundraising channel in order to raise the necessary funding to upgrade and main-tain the facility which is in des-perate need of professional at-tention such as: a robotic pool vacuum system; replacing the roof and windows; seeing to the sagging paving and upkeep of the bathrooms,” she added.

An application has also been made to the Lotto for assis-tance to renovate the pool and replace the roof and the owner has agreed to assist with the shortfall. Generous donations have also already been received to resolve the problem with the computer and printer and channels are being explored to address the electricity costs.

However one key area that

needs to urgently be ad-dressed is increasing the investment in human re-courses. On a daily basis for four years Anette ar-rives at the pool at 05:00 to clean it in preparation for the day, followed by cleaning the bathrooms, a volunteer then briefly offers her a respite to shower before she faces the rest of her day which ends at around 19:00 and on a Sunday while the pool is closed to the pub-lic, she is busy adminis-tering the shock treat-ment to ensure that the pool is crystal clean and ready for the new week. While a robotic pool vac-uum system – and a fund-raiser initiative to make it happen, would alleviate some of the demands on Anette it does not entirely address the situation and the need for having addi-tional pool attendants is paramount.

The vision of the So-etbev Swimming Centre is: To support both indi-

viduals and groups in all aspects of aquatics; To train and empower them through the medium of aquatic sport or fun wa-ter events;

To promote job cre-ation, entrepreneurship and skills development through aquatic sport and a mentorship pro-gramme to uplift both the individual as well as the community.

Anyone who wishes to be a friend of the pool and would like to contribute financially to the project will be issued with a do-nations receipt accord-ing to Section 18A of the Income Tax Act. This re-ceipt enables you to write the contribution off as a business expense for tax purposes and is a small way of saying thank you for your support.

For more information about or if you are able to volunteer time and skills please contact Anette at [email protected]

The Bathurst Country Affair :: 25th to the 27th October - Good Food - Good Wine - Good Living

The Bathurst Country Affair aims to involve the entire community in sharing

a common vision. Tourism is the only way we’re going to make this village work and

all the stakeholders – businesses and community members – are encouraged to participate in this event which is a three day happening with a year-long effect for the entire community including Nolukhanyo,” an enthusiastic Tanya Van Mierlo Schenk, organiser of the annual event said.

The key concept here is sustainability not only for the annual event but in terms of the village economy and projects benefitting from the initiative. In addition to benefitting from mentorship and leadership offered by Tanya and her tea, the profits from the three day fun event is shared between the HIV-AIDS Support project, based in Nolukhanyo, that have begun growing vegetables with a view of supplying local businesses in the future and the Sunshine Feeding Scheme, operational for the past three years, which ensures that over 300 pre-schoolers receive a balanced daily meal.

Local is Lekker - the Chef’s Challenge competition – is one of the draw cards of the weekend event, is hosted at The Bathurst Arms, The Pig ‘n Whistle, The Workshop, Bradshaw Mill and Kingston Farm. Celebrity Chefs, from all over the country, will be serving lunches on Saturday and Sunday while the local Chefs and Cooks will be serving dinners at their establishments in the village on Friday and Saturday evenings. All meals consist of three courses and each guest will be asked to complete a judging card at the end of their meal. So, let’s

see if Local really is Lekker? The results will be tallied up and the winner announced at the end of the weekend.

Wine tasting will be conducted by professionals – quite the grand affair with crystal glasses – at The Corner Gallery and The Workshop.

The Village Green boasts over 50 exhibitors including the Farmer’s Market, additional wine tastings and tasting of other alcoholic beverages like vodka and absinthe are on offer alongside deli delights,

good coffee, the cheeseman, sushi, tapas, health shakes and home-made ice-cream.

Vaughn of The Bathurst Butchery

has a stall at the Village Green with a selection of fine speciality meats and deli treats – salami, hams, gammons cabanossi, dry wors and biltong. And for those in the know Vaughn tipped us off that you’ll find T-bones a la Bathurst Show style at The Thirsty Monkey.

Open from 10-17:00 on Friday and Saturday and 10:00-15:00 on Sunday, the Green offers a stage with full PA-system so buskers , poets and performance artists can share their talents with visitors all day long. All the pubs will have also offer live music in the evenings during the weekend.

There is a whole host of satellite events – at 11:30 on Saturday there is the big parade, later the pineapple throwing competition, the waiter race, the horse and pony adventure race, the soapbox derby, wacky walk and mountain bike challenge.

The village will be all dollied up with over 50 entrants in this year’s Pavement Pretty competition taking up the challenge to decorate their shop fronts.

Bathurst County Affair would like to extend their hearty thanks to Stenden and My Pond Hotel for their sponsorship. Stenden awards a bursary to a candidate who would otherwise not have been able to apply and Stenden students will be working at the event.

“In tourism there’s a saying – promote your neighbour as much as you would yourself and that’s what this weekend is all about for the village and the area at large. So by all means once you’ve supported The Bathurst Country Affair head over to The Bedford Garden show and make the most of their offerings too,” the ever optimistic Tanya said.

There is a park and ride facility

available too – park you vehicle at the show grounds and use the shuttle back to the hub of the village from where everything is within walking distance. There are one or two venues that are a little bit out of the way but these you can stop off at on your way in and out of Bathurst.

Take a trip down memory lane with Lord Winston, one tonne of Percheron, as you enjoy a Horse and Carriage ride.

Each day at 11:00 there’s a teaching tour at Elizabeth’s Herb Garden. This year’s theme Your Kitchen Pharmacy explores the medicinal properties uses and benefits of every day culinary herbs. Culinary herbs are familiar and potent ingredients; their smell and tastes are distinct. They have strong qualities that impart flavour and aroma, and natural chemical constituents that act on the digestive system. It’s no wonder that for centuries people have used many herbs interchangeably as seasonings, and when needed, prepared them specifically as medicine. David, the owner of Elizabeth’s Herb Nursery and an expert on herbs will share his wealth of knowledge with you. Not to be missed by those “foodies” who love using natural elements in their dishes!

Two Sages is bringing new stock in especially for The Bathurst Country Affair. Marcelle Pullen has a penchant for original, authentic Eastern objet, from laughing Buddhas to incense,

crystals and crystal jewellery to stunning vibrantly coloured clothing

and accessories. The range of health products in

stock are selected for their integrity and Marcel, a trained aromatherapist, is on hand to offer advice and safe use not only with regards to the stunning selection of essential oils on hand but also each of the other products, which you can rest assured has been tried, tested and approved by Marcel before offered for sale to the public in her shop. There are spices and herbs, raw honey, a selection of teas and Succulento speciality condiments created and crafted in Port Alfred.

Marcel also creates a own unique hand-made range of glycerine soaps and related body products. The Two Sages range is popular not only among members of the public but also with Bed & Breakfasts and other hospitality industry vendors in the area. Please do contact Marcel

directly if you would like to stock a locally made range of soaps and body products in our establishment.

Browse through the range of esoteric books courtesy of Peter Mosely of Bathurst Book Fair fame, then grab an ice cold home-made ginger beer before you venture into Richard Pullen’s adjacent pottery and ceramic studio – rest assured you’ll stay there for a while as you marvel and hopefully buy some of his finely crafted hand and wheel works.

After such a fun filled weekend you’ll need to soak and relax those aching muscles – so don’t go home without grabbing a jar or two of mustard bath powder readily stocked at the Two Sages.

Safety & SecurityPort Alfred, Bathurst, Shaw Park,

Kleinemonde, AlexandriaRegistered as a Security Service Provider

Alex beat PA in rock and surf compSATURDAY saw the annual Port alfred River and Ski Boat Club versus The Al-exandria and Districts Angling Club, rock and surf competition. The area fished, was from Diaz

Cross to the Point before Alexander Bay. The conditions were extremely tough, with almost gale force westerly wind, which made the sea very rough but despite the lousy conditions, the sea was warm and clean.

A surprising total of 24 intrepid anglers braved the wind and partici-pated in the competition, with 11 an-glers from Port Alfred and 13 anglers from Alexandria. Six different species of edible fish was caught and success-fully released with an overall weight of 58.7 kg.

Alexandria made their “home wa-ters fishing” count and was the win-ning team, having caught the heavi-

est bag weighing 38.8 kg. Port Alfred didn’t come close, catching a total bag weight of 19.9kg.

Tommy Parkinson was the Top Angler for Alex with bag weight of 2 kg, an excellent catch regardless of weather conditions. His fish includ-ed a white musselcracker weighing 8.9kg and a white steenbras weighing 5.2 kg. Port Alfred’s Top Angler was Len Titmuss with his catch of a 7.9kg white musselcracker. Karen Kemp as always, did the ladies proud with a super contribution, a white steenbras weighing in at 4.3 kg.

All the anglers enjoyed the event and the braai afterwards . As usual a strong spirit of camaraderie was ex-perienced between the two clubs as a number of the anglers are members of both Clubs with plenty of debates about who should be representing whom....

No reports have come in regard-ing deep sea fishing for this week, so that’s it for now. Please contact me with all your fishing news on 082 676 1742 or email: [email protected].

Wim Verschoor from Holland was thrilled with his catch, a Black Musselcracker which he caught recently, while on a fishing charter with skipper Chris Fourie.

The 1st Eights in action at the Knysna regatta. St Andrew’s Rowers Shine in Knysna RegattaLAST weekend 45 St Andrew’s College rowers travelled to Knysna to take part in the an-nual Knysna Regatta and a number of impressive results were yielded across the board.

The most notable perfor-mances on Saturday in the one kilometre sprints came from the Under-15A Quads, who won their race, and the 1st Eights, who were in impressive form as they won their sprint comfortably. On Sunday the 1st Eights showed their supe-riority and won the 6km Heads Race, finishing an outstanding 40 seconds ahead of SACS, their closest rivals.

The Knysna Regatta attracts

Terry Kukard

some of the top rowing schools from the Eastern and Western Cape. Considering the tough opposition, it was the sort of performance which would sug-gest that the 1st Eights crew is one of the leading contenders for the South African Schools Boat Race, which will take place on the Kowie River in De-cember.

Kingswood cricketers stroll to victory against hudsonTHE Kingswood College 1st XI Cricket team made its way down to East London last Sat-urday to take on Hudson Park. It proved to be a good day at the office, as Kingswood man-aged an emphatic victory.

Hudson Park won the toss and elected to bat first. From the outset the decision ap-peared to backfire, as the King-swood bowlers made great use of the conditions to restrict Hudson to a meagre 105 all out.

Anelisa Mteto and Brad Haller were the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-30 and 3-17 respec-tively. Jarod van Blerk and Mi-chael Hansel each chipped in with two wickets.

Kingswood made easy work of the target as they won by 8 wickets with a large number of overs to spare. Hansel (52) and Haller (46 not out) capped off fine all-round performances as they steered their side towards victory.

It proved to be a good day for a number of the Kingswood cricket teams, as four of the five sides who took on Hudson won their matches on the day.

St Andrew’s 1st XI goes down narrowly to GreyLAST Saturday the Grey Col-lege 1st XI Cricket team played host to St Andrew’s College in a blustery Port Elizabeth. Clashes between these two teams have often proved to be exciting af-fairs in the past, and this occa-

sion proved to be no different. St Andrew’s won the toss and

chose to bat first. After being in a decent position at 105-3, St Andrew’s could only muster 188-7 in their allotted 50 overs, thanks in no small measure to the lower order efforts of Brian Ferguson (30 not out) and An-drew Mills (23 not out) who held the ship together late in the innings. The Grey bowlers managed to keep things tight from the get-go and bowled with excellent control.

In reply, Grey appeared to be cruising to victory at 113-2, be-fore fast bowler Sintu Manjezi produced an outstanding late surge. He claimed three quick wickets to bring St Andrew’s back into the game, but Grey’s Bernard Ferreira proved to be the hero of the day with a composed 83 not out as Grey wrapped up a tense game by 3 wickets with less than 3 overs to spare.

Even in defeat, it was a per-formance to suggest that this St Andrew’s side will be stiff op-position to all their opponents as the season progresses.
