What The Word “Sunflower” Means?

• The word “sunflower” means, “any plant of the genus Helianthus

having large flower heads with dark disk florets and showy yellow rays.”

• In other words, sunflowers means any plant with a large yellow head and yellow rays coming from the genus Helianthus.

How Big Can Sunflowers Grow?

• Sunflowers grow to be very big, bright, magnificent flowers.

• They grow to be 8-11 feet tall.

Many Types of Sunflowers

• Sunny Smile – one of the dwarf sunflowers, growing only 12-15 inches tall.

• Claret Hybrid- Stunning deep red petals that grow 5-6 feet tall.

How Fully Developed Sunflowers Look Like

• Fully developed sunflowers all look different depending on the kind of sunflower it is.

• Many of them grow to be 8- 11 feet tall, and some of them grow to be12-15 inches tall.

How To Grow Sunflowers

• For giant sunflowers, space three feet apart in rows that are three to four feet apart.

• For regular or intermediate/medium sunflowers, space two feet apart in rows that are three feet apart.

• Finally, for miniature sunflowers, space one foot apart in rows that are three feet apart.

• Sunflowers attract birds because of the resources the flowers have. The sunflower seeds are high in protein for cooking oil.

• Sunflower seeds were taken to Europe in the 16th century where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient.

• Sunflower leaves can be used as a cattle food, while the stems contain a fibre which may be used in paper production.

• The sunflower is the national flower of Peru, Russia, and Ukraine.
