The school busses have begun its routes once again, the hallways are filled with children’s feet, books have been dusted off and handed out to students, and moms everywhere are rejoicing! That must mean only one thing; school is back in session!

September is always a good month of the year to get back into a good routine. Summer is fading away, vacations are coming to an end, and school and other activities have begun. As Christians September can be a good month to get back into a good routine. Of course my prayer as your Pastor is that you never fell out of a good routine, but I know we all lose sight from time to time! But here is a question for us to look at today. What does a good Christian routine look like? Let’s take a look.

Above all we follow God’s command to keep the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. In one sense we are commanded to go to God’s house and hear the Word of God and keep it. We should not despise preaching but rather look forward to hearing what God has to share that day. In another sense we get to go to God’s house. If you knew that you were going to be given presents at a friend’s house you were invited to, you would look forward to going! We look at Sundays as a time that Jesus gives us presents, gifts of Word and Sacrament.

The routine then continues throughout the week. September is a month when kids go back to school. So too we can remind ourselves that we are to always be learning and relearning the stories that the Bible shares. We can never know the Bible too much, and we will always be students. As we learn about the Bible, we then can share them with our kids, our cousins, our grandkids. Pick a book of the Bible and read it, get a bible study from CPH or the bookstore and work through it, or simply read the Portals of Prayer and the verses that they suggest you read. A good Christian routine is daily being in the Word. Finally, there are a lot of stories and teachings the Bible shares with us, but there is one lesson we should learn about often. By faith we can learn and believe that Jesus came to this world, died for this world, forgave the whole world, and is coming back to judge the world. In church we are always retelling this story, and there is no more important story to teach your family then the story of the Gospel.

We want to pray for all those who are beginning a new school year. We pray for the students who are ready to learn, the teachers and principals who are prepared to educate our kids, and the staff who help to provide a great experience for our kids in the school. We are so thankful that we live in a world that allows our kids to grow up with a world class education.

LWIM is involved in service projects and raising funds for projects here at Zion, and we participate in many worthwhile missions in the United States and abroad. Starting in September we will be highlighting a mission

that is supported with the mites we’ve collected. Our SELC District supports several mission projects as

well as the National LWML.

We want the congregation to learn more about the impact little mite boxes have in helping people and spreading the good news about

Christ!!!

As we come to the end of another summer, I can't help but reflect on how many changes have come this year. My beautiful, sweet twins are about to leave for college and my oldest daughter is beginning her senior in college. My little boy isn't so little any more as we just celebrated his 13th birthday. In fact, I got my first eye roll the other day. Many of my days these past few weeks have been filled with as many tears as smiles. At Zion change is also in the air. I said good bye to Pastor Andy who supported me and the preschool for the 8 years I have been at Zion. One of my most vivid memories I hold is him rushing around the building during the Thanksgiving season filling his car with turkeys and baskets to bring to needy families. I I always marveled at how determined he was to make sure no one would go hungry. I wish him a future filled with health and happiness. Just last month we welcomed Pastor Grewe and his family. Unfortunately with a huge computer crash I was not able to enjoy the first few days getting to know him as I was up to my eyeballs in data entry and trying to make sense of the huge task I had in front of me. But thankfully after a wonderful meeting we were finally able to chat. I feel excited and am thankful for his contagious enthusiasm and the feeling that things will only get better, even though I thought they were already pretty good. So, yes, as we begin another school year in just a few weeks and I begin a new chapter in my own life, I am filled with hope and gratitude and many emotions. I am excited to see what this fall and winter will bring and ask all of the Zion congregation to pray for my daughters; that they will be safe and happy and that God will hold them in his hands. I also ask for prayers for my wonderful staff who make my job easy and for their wonderful children. I look forward to the trees changing colors and welcoming fall. I look forward to pitter patter of little feet that will soon come running in and bring life into the building. I most look forward to the pit in my stomach going away once I get used to the idea of having three of my children gone and hopefully I can feel peace in knowing that change can be a good thing. National Grandparents Day in the

United States

Many families in the United States observe National Grandparents Day on the first Sunday of September after Labor Day. This day honors grandparents.

Many people honor their grandparents through a range of activities such as gift-giving, card-giving, and for children to invite their grandparents to school for a day where they participate in special lessons or special assembly programs. Many school students take part in story-telling activities that relate to their grandparents, as well as art or poster competitions where children often use a story about their grandparents in their artwork. About four million greeting cards are sent within the United States each year on National Grandparents Day. This day is also an opportunity for people to appreciate and express their love to their grandparents through kind actions such as making a phone call or inviting their grandparents for dinner. People living in retirement villages or nursing homes may receive a visit from their grandchildren or loved ones on this day. Public Life National Grandparents Day is an observance and not a public holiday in the United States.

Background National Grandparents Day has more than one origin. Some people consider it to have been first proposed by Michael Goldgar in the 1970s after he visited his aunt in an Atlanta nursing home, Spending $11,000 of his own money in lobbying efforts to have the day officially recognized, he made 17 trips to Washington DC over a seven-year span to meet with legislators. Others consider Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, a housewife in West Virginia, to have been the main driver for the day of observance. Throughout the 1970s McQuade worked hard to educate the people about the important contributions senior citizens made and the contributions that they would be willing to make if asked. She also urged people to adopt a grandparent, not for one day a year and not for material giving, but for a lifetime of experience. In any event National Grandparents Day was finally signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Marian McQuade received a phone call from the White House to advise her of this event. Many people believe that National Grandparents Day was inspired by her efforts. A presidential proclamation on September 6, 1979, made this day official – it designated Sunday, September 9, 1979, (being the “first Sunday of September following Labor Day”) as National Grandparents Day. Each year the President is requested to issue a proclamation to: designate the first Sunday in September after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day; and to call on people, groups and organizations to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. Symbols The official song of National Grandparents Day is “A Song for Grandma And Grandpa” by Johnny Prill. The official flower for the day is the “forget-me-not” flower.

The Mark of a True Disciple

Jesus said, “All people will know that you are My disciples, if you have

love for one another” (John 13:35). “As I have loved you, you also are

to love one another.” Because God has first loved us, we are able to

love others. Most of us never tire of singing, “Jesus loves me, this I

know, for the Bible tells me so.” God’s love within us should overflow

through us to those in our midst. Jesus tells us that our love for others

is the clearest evidence that we are followers of Jesus. Whether we are

at school, at work, in our homes, or in our neighborhoods, we have the

opportunity to reach out to others with God’s love. What a joy it is

also to sing, “They will know that we are Christians by our love.”

God demonstrated His tremendous love not because of our worthiness,

but because He is a God of awesome love. Jesus’ love for His

heavenly Father and for us changed the world. Through His birth, life,

death, and resurrection from that death, we through faith have received

the forgiveness of our sins and life eternal. God’s love to us in Christ

enables us to love Him. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John

4:19).

By ourselves, we are not capable of loving as Christ loves us. This

sacrificial love comes only from God. By ourselves, we are capable of

showing some love to those who love us, but God’s love enables us to

love all people regardless how they respond to us. Our love for our

neighbors, friends, or coworkers is not determined by how they act

toward us. Filled with Jesus’ love, we love not only in words or talk

“but in deed(s) and in truth” (1 John 3:18). When needs arise, Jesus

opens our eyes and hearts so we can respond in love to those in need.

May others see us as Jesus’ disciples who share God’s love.
