A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR
Friday, November 22nd
Active Group Thanksgiving Meal
at “The Place” in Pope
Leave FBC at 10:30 AM
One verse that Ann has always quoted to our kids (and yes, sometimes to me) is Jeremiah 17:9, “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” How is that for a thought for thanksgiv-ing? However, it is I think at the heart of thanksgiving. What do we choose to grow in our lives? Hearts of complaining or hearts of gratefulness? How about another verse? Philippians 2:14-15, “Do everything without complain-ing and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as chil-dren of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse peo-ple.” Wow, does that hit anyone else where you live? Where are you at in com-plaining? Tired of people not doing it your way? Tired of people who get on your nerves? Tired of politics? Tired of . . . You fill in the blank because it is easy to complain. From something as simple as the weather to much more important things in life, we usually have an opinion and when we have an opinion, it is usual-ly followed with a complaint. But what does a complaining heart reveal about ourselves? This is what it re-veals? It reveals a heart that is centered on self and a life marred with sin. God tells us not only to not complain but he also instructs us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” But God doesn’t know what I’m going through? Yes, he does. Jesus was tempted in all ways we are yet he did not sin. If you are reading this, please no I am preach-ing more to myself than I am to anyone else. Just the other day, Ann and I had lunch and I was complaining and she said, “Really? That’s how we are going to end our nice lunch together is with you complaining?” A life filled with Christ is also filled with thanksgiving. A life filled with self is filled with complaining and often bitterness. And that is sin! This is a great time of year to focus on Christ and be grateful! Randy

Heth
57 The Lord is my portion; I promise to keep your words. 58 I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. 59 When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies. 60 I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments. 61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law. 62 At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your righteous rules. 63 I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts. 64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!
When I was young, I wasn’t known for cleaning my room when my mother told me to. I would get around to it in my own time, but rarely was it when she told me to. Back then, I wouldn’t have classified my behavior as “disobedient” because I did clean my room…just not immediately when she told me to.
However, I now understand that it was disobedience. As Rick Warren at Saddle-back Church wrote, “Delayed obedience is disobedience.”
My not cleaning my room when my mother told to, was delayed obedience. Yes I did it, when I got around to it. But my delay caused me to be disobedient.
The psalmist wrote in v60…”I hasten and do not delay to keep your command-ments.” He understood that delayed obedience to the Word of God is disobedi-ence…and his prayer was for continued desire and willingness to be obedient immediately.
The point is…don’t put-off doing what you know the Word of God says to do. That may be tithing. It may be forgiving someone, or seeking forgiveness from someone. It may be volunteering to serve in your local church.
We know the Word says to do these things, and by delaying in getting started, we show our disobedience to the Lord.
Don’t put off any longer, what you know the Word of God says to do.
Hebrews 13:17-25 this week, as we wrap up our study of this incredible book!
Love you, and see you Sunday! Bro. Chris
