Initiated into Xi Chapter in October 1991, I will have been a

member of DKG for thirty years this new year. I have served on

almost every committee for my chapter, agreeing to be the

chair of several committees. I have also accepted the responsi-

bilities of Xi Chapter President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice

President, Recording Secretary, and Parliamentarian.

Through the influence of many Xi Chapter sisters, I began to

attend State DKG meetings. They challenged me to take on

more responsibility at the state level. I began by serving on

state committees. I have chaired the Leadership Development,

Membership, and Educational Excellence Committees. I have

also served as Kentucky State Organization President, 1st Vice

President, 2nd Vice President, Recording Secretary, and Parlia-

mentarian.

In 2016, I had the honor of being selected to attend the Golden

Gift Leadership Management Seminar. I spent two weeks in

Austin, Texas, during which I received training on effective lead-

ership. Then in August of this year, I was appointed to the In-

ternational Golden Gift Fund Committee.

I am looking forward to further opportunities to give to DKG,

specifically through the Kentucky State Organization.

I hope that all of you are staying safe and healthy, and

that you have voted or will vote tomorrow. It is truly a

strange world in which we are living; even our DKG

world is being impacted. I keep reading that people are

growing tired of Zoom meetings, but where would we

be without this type of meeting? I have had the privilege

of attending a number of chapter zoom meetings as well

as monthly zoom meetings with the other state presi-

dents of the International Southeast Region.

I was hoping that how to hold our State Convention in

March 2021, would not be a stressful decision this time,

but with current KY red zones, holiday gatherings dis-

couraged, cold weather around the corner and in-

creased time spent indoors, Covid-19 once again hinders

our decision-making. Be assured that Kentucky will have

a state convention! Whether it will be in-person or virtual is the question to be answered.

Our upcoming Executive Board meeting will tackle this decision, but as a member of KSO please let your chapter president or me ([email protected] or 217-855-2005) know your thoughts concerning an in-person or virtual State Convention. I need your input so that as many voices as possible can be part of this important decision. To date, plans go forward with an in-person convention – on the agenda is a business

meeting; presentation of awards; installation of the 2021-2023 biennium state officers; an

DKG International guest; basket bidding; shopping at our convention store plus the joy of

being together albeit with social distancing and wearing face masks.

I appreciate each and every one of you!

I am reassured that the sun will continue to shine providing light and warmth to our

world.

Educational Excellence News…including reminders about EEC award applications

Your state Educational Excellence Committee wants to thank everyone who participated in our fall workshops, and especially those who attended the EEC presentation. The pow-er point has been sent to every chapter. Please let me know if you need help or have questions regarding this. Covid-19 has a bad reputation, but I can say one positive thing came out of having led a workshop online – attendance was awesome! We had at least 25 attendees at one point and maybe as many as 28!

What goes on in your mind these days? Do you stop to remember what you were doing this time last year? I do, and it was the season for holiday preparation. Covid-19 was not in my thoughts or plans, and it was probably not on your radar either. Nevertheless, this invisible nuisance is here now, and many of us are making alternate plans for whatever we hope to do. Hopefully, you are still in contact with most of your family and friends. In this case, social media helps. And I hope that you have been able to keep in touch with your chapter members.

Is your chapter communication directory current? Consider matching up members that do not have internet – they can make phone calls to one another. Members not on social media can email to touch base. Are you communicating regularly in some way?

If you have not had an “in-person” meeting, have you met on some online format (Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, Google Hangouts, Facebook video chat, other)???? If you need assistance with online meetings, please reach out. We will help you! 502-821-3752

Does your chapter have a project? If you have a chapter project, please look over the project award application and consider submitting your project to be rec-ognized for an Annie Project Award.

Have you been able to have a program with your business meetings? It is challeng-ing to include a program when Zoom, for example, has a 40-minute meeting lim-it. I am in a book group and we have two links on our meeting night. Our first link is for 30 minutes. Then we end that session and begin the next which will be nearly 40 minutes. You could do that to include a business meeting and a pro-gram. You could also meet optionally on other days/evenings just to socially chat and touch base with one another. Or there may be someone with a school ac-count in your chapter that can host meetings for an hour or more. If you can host a program during a chapter meeting, please consider submitting the pro-gram to be recognized for an Annie Program Award. Please let us know if you want or need program ideas. 502-821-3752

So that you can have what you need to know about submitting applications for either of the Annie Awards, they are part of this newsletter. I will also be send-ing them to the chapter presidents and EEC chairs the last week in December as submissions are due February 1, 2021. The Classroom Educator Award appli-cation will be sent then, too, and is also in this newsletter.

So, who can be nominated for the Classroom Educator Award? The candidate can be someone actively working in a classroom that belongs to your chapter and/or the nominee can be someone that you know is a key educator and deserving of this award. If the candidate is not currently a member, she will be notified of the nomination and recognized at her school as a candidate/winner for this award. This is great and free publicity for DKG. Even an educator not in DKG, may exemplify some of our seven pur-poses and what better way to introduce her to our society!? And yes, you may nomi-nate more than one educator. Generally, a chapter chooses their Chapter Classroom Educator for the year and then nominates her for the state EEC award; however, you may recommend a chapter member and an educator that is not a DKG member. A classroom educator can be a teacher, counselor, speech therapist, occupational thera-pist, a judge who teaches juveniles one day a week, a librarian who teaches reading at a school or public library, and so on. The educator should be a key educator and meet

the criteria on the application. This has been an extremely challenging year for most educators, whether they are teaching in person, virtually, or a combination of both. So, nominate the educator that you know. It is a perfect time to recognize and honor her dedication and diligence to the profession. Please consider recommending and nomi-nating your key educator for the EEC Classroom Educator Award!

Membership News

Lucy Riffle

Hello Sisters

I hope each of you are staying safe during these trying times. With so much uncertainty in the Nation, we must strive to keep in touch and keep our chapters relevant. My chapter President recently initiated a “sister check-in” program where each member of the chapter was paired with another member. We were asked to make a call to check in on each other. I’ve made my contact and had a nice conversation with my sister. Due to issues in her life she hasn’t been able to attend a meeting in a number of years, so it was nice to “catch up”.

What are you doing in your chapter? Are you having meetings- in person, virtually, or a combination? International has done a survey asking about meetings. With 1780 respons-es, over 69 percent have responded that they are meeting and connecting virtually. Some of the comments include:

We met live in a large pavilion with masks and distancing in Sept and October. We will be meeting via ZOOM November, January, and February. Hope to meet live in March but will have to wait and see.

We are doing both. Meeting face to face for those that can. Our chapter bought a cam-era and mic to record for those that can't.

Through December, we will be meeting virtually. We will decide in December how we will meet the rest of the year. We are hoping to be able to meet in person in the Spring of 2121.

Our president starts an email with any business we have and information about health needs and/or celebrations of members. Members respond and it is very fun to read what everyone has been doing.

We are meeting face to face and virtually. Members have a choice to attend in person or join virtually.

As you can see, a variety of meetings have occurred. We are teachers, so we know how to adapt to whatever comes our way!!

In her acceptance speech, our International President Becky Sadowski stated that her focus for the next two years is “you- the members.” She continued by saying, “After all, you are

key to every aspect of DKG: recruiting, retaining, and reinstating members; supporting our programs and projects; contributing to our Society funds; developing emerging leaders; marketing our organization in your local communities; serving on Society committees; and leading our chapters and state organizations. The strength of DKG lies within each of us and is us.”

As we continue to live in this world during the pandemic, let’s keep Becky’s focus in mind. Continue to recruit, retain, and reinstate members. Remember our purposes and focus on them.

As we all continue to stay strong during these times, let’s remember to KEEP DKG Strong as we follow our State President’s theme and “Step Up for DKG.”

EPSILON

Epsilon enjoyed a delightful meeting on Saturday, with Dr. Barbara’s Quarantined Fitness Program, Mojo

Movement, providing us much needed laughter and lots of fun (see photos below).

Sister Becky Harvey opened the meeting with an awesome Inspirational Thought, “Give All Your Worries to

God”, and Parliamentarian Mary Alice Oldfield, introduced us to some of the 97 changes in Robert’s Rules

of Order, 12th edition (which President Mary Cat is purchasing for each member for Christmas), and Mary

Alice also took us through proposed changes to our by-laws, as per KSO. The Bylaws committee will be

working on our Epsilon revisions through April 2021. And approved by-laws will be sent to Donna Goodin

by requested deadline.

Our next meeting will be February 20, 2021 via Zoom.

ZETA CHAPTER: September 2020 – November 2020

Zeta Chapter Sisters have been implementing the theme of “Know, Grow, and Glow Together” as we begin

the Biennium of Dr. Joyce Fortney Hamberg. During our September 2020 meeting, we were able to meet

face to face for the first time since November 2019. Our new officers were installed and Kentucky State

Organization awards were presented by Dr. Bonnia Cook Fouts, Alpha Chapter. The awards presented were

the Educator Excellence in the Classroom First Place Teacher (Miranda Tieman), Annie Award for Programs

– Master Provisions (accepted by Joyce Hamberg), and the recognition of Women of Vision (Honorees are:

Pam Bernard, Joyce Hamberg, Colleen McCabe, Renee McKellogg, June Madison, Lynn Mays, Debbie

Onkst, and Lucy Riffle). Zeta Sister, Carolyn Chapman, was recognized for 40 years of service. Also during

our September meeting, we had a special memorial service to remember our departed Sister, Ruth Jen-

nings.

Since the COVID-19 cases have risen in Kentucky, our November 2020 meeting was conducted virtually

through Zoom. We inducted our new Zeta Sister, Donna Chuhran, during this meeting. We achieved our

goal of raised funds for World Fellowship and Schools of Africa by selling Christmas ornament kits. These

kits were created, organized and delivered by our Zeta Sister, Jane Bush. During this meeting, we also dis-

cussed our future plans continuing the mission of our Books, Bibs, & Beyond program and our partnership

with Lincoln Grant Scholar House. Our resurrected History Committee is hard at work collecting infor-

mation and reflections from 15 past Zeta Chapter presidents. This will be a valuable artifact for the future

generations of the Zeta Chapter.

As we continue during this challenging time of the pandemic and throughout the holiday season, we de-

veloped a Sister Watch program. Each Zeta Sister is paired up with another Sister to increase efforts of

reaching out to one another. For current teachers that might be struggling and for members that may be

in isolation, our Sister Watch program has been very beneficial. It has been a wonderful experience

getting to know our Sisters on deeper levels, making connections, and supporting one another as we con-

tinue our journeys this year.

Zeta Chapter extends Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas wishes to our Sister Chapters with hope

of a COVID-free return to some type of normalcy in 2021.

IOTA

The following are news items from the Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma: Members met virtually via Zoom with the help of Beth Pyle, State President on September 26,

2020, and on October 24, 2020. Members donated $140 to The Imagination Library of Pulaski County to honor the new teach-

ers in the local schools: Pulaski County, Somerset Independent, Science Hill, and Somerset Christian. Next year, new teachers from the Wayne County area will be honored.

Members donated $50 to the World Fellowship.

MU

Mu Chapter held their first Zoom meeting, Thursday, Novem-

ber 12. Eighteen members joined the virtual meeting. Officers for the 2020-2022 biennium are President,

Cherie Mingus; Vice-President, Donna Carter; Recording Secretary, Debby Couch; Corresponding Secre-

tary, Susan Cross; Treasurer, Shelia Wilkinson; Parliamentarian, Ramona Jeffries; and Immediate Past Pres-

ident, Pascal Bailey.

Ramona Jeffries and Shelia Wilkinson were recognized as DKG International Committee members. Ra-

mona serves on the Nominations Committee until 2022. Sheila serves on the Finance Committee until

2024. Mu Chapter is proud and honored to have two wonderful sisters serving in this capacity.

President Mingus gave the inspiration, which was a poem by Jonna Fuchs. The poem was titled “Most of

All” which reflected on our blessings each of us enjoy that we may take for granted. During the business

session, members discussed possible fundraisers.

Dr. Bonnia Fouts was scheduled to join our meeting, but was unable to attend. She had planned to make a

presentation to Mu Chapter. In her absence, President Mingus made the presentation - a certificate from

KSO as Runner-up for the Annie Program Award. The award was based on Mu’s program held January

2020, “It’s Never Too Late – Sharing Lessons from a Folk School” presented by member Debby Couch.

With no further business to discuss, each member present was gave one positive note/blessing that they

have experienced during our “pause” due to Covid. We hope to meet in person in January, but will plan to

meet virtually if the majority of the membership would rather meet that way.

XI

Xi Chapter was able to get our first 2020 meeting in before Covid-19 caused us to socially distance

ourselves from each other. 0n February 10, we met at Walden School, in the classroom of our

Chapter President, Donna Whitis. We elected our officers for the 2020-2022 Biennium. They will be

Kathy Zwanzig, President; Debbie Duffy, 1st VicePresident; Theresa Reilly, 2nd VicePresident; Mindi

Keiner-Rummel, Recording Secretary; Jane Jones, Corresponding Secretary; Barbara Jacobs, Treas-

urer; and Donna Whitis, Parliamentarian. We also selected the two young ladies who would receive

$1,000 from our Jean Baugh Grant-in Aid Fund. The program for the evening was make-and-take

activities. We learned how to make boxes from cards and how to create a silk scarf using a blank

scarf, art tissue paper, and vinegar.

Our next scheduled meeting was scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020 featuring the In-

stallation of Chapter Officers. Covid-19 had its own plans, and that meeting was cancelled.

By the time August rolled around we were all really needing to see the beautiful faces and hear the

cheery voices of our Xi Sisters. We did what most everyone else in the world is doing. We had a

Zoom meeting! We began by installing our new officers. We also inducted two new members, Ab-

bey Pierce and Jacki Raque.

The October meeting was also a Zoom meeting. At this time, we inducted another new member,

Erin Schneider, a math teacher at Atherton High School who received the Presidential Award for

Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teacher from Kentucky last year. For our program, mem-

bers who are still teaching shared frustrations, solutions and humorous experiences of Non-

Traditional Instruction and Hybrid models.

With an abundance of caution, our executive board made the decision that our December and Feb-

ruary meetings would also be via Zoom. We are hoping that a vaccine is available in time for us to

hold a face-to-face meeting in May.

We are hoping to see our Kentucky State Organization sisters in March as things hopefully return to

a more normal state!

UPSILON

Meetings and activities this year certainly look different, but Upsilon is trying to stay in touch, support our

active teachers, and continue reaching out to the Northern Kentucky community.

For our first meeting of the year in September, we were able to meet in-person, with our masks, at a picnic

shelter, on the grounds of a local church. The weather was perfect and the shelter was spacious enough to

comfortably maintain appropriate distance. KSO 1st Vice-President Bonnia Cook Fouts joined us to present

the awards which would have been presented at the state convention: the EEC award to Connie Curry and

several Women of Vision certificates. Incoming president Linda Mauser presented outgoing president Pam

Thomas with an appreciation gift and introduced the other 2020-2022 officers:

Following the business meeting, Pam Thomas and Pam Manker jointly presented a program on the book

Unveiled Truth by Gail Goolsby. Service project for the September meeting was a collection of baby items

for the clients of Care Net Pregnancy Services.

Ten of our members are active teachers and we are so proud of them for

meeting the challenges of this year! To support them, a volunteer cadre of re-

tired members is ensuring they periodically receive small gifts and messages of

encouragement.

Mother-daughter team Brenda and Sarah Staggs assembled and delivered 41

goody bags – one for each member of the staff – to James E. Biggs Early Educa-

tion Center in Covington where Sarah teaches. In addition to “goodies,” each

bag contained information about DKG and Upsilon chapter.

Our second meeting of the year took place on Saturday, November 14th, via Zoom. To ensure everyone

knew all those faces in the little boxes, everyone was asked to share something about herself. This just re-

inforced how much we miss being able to gather in person. Pam Manker shared a brief video on the DKG/

Unicef effort for Schools for Africa.

For our November service project, we had decided to thank some group of first responders for their ser-

vice and we chose the Alexandria, KY police department, as Upsilon member Juanita Nelson’s son is their

chief. Since donations could not be received at a meeting, a google.doc sign-up sheet was emailed and

items collected via porch drop-offs. Before Thanksgiving, 24 gift bags will be delivered, each containing an

assortment of snacks and personal care items, a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card (they are police officers

after all), and a handmade card expressing appreciation for their often thankless job. (Special

thanks to Cathy Feldmann for making the inspirational cards and gift tags, and to Charlotte Depew

for donating her handmade boxes for some of the items.)

Finally, we congratulate Roberta Schultz on the publication of her third chapbook of poetry Touch-

stones, published by Finishing Line Press. We are proud of this talented poet/singer/songwriter sis-

ter.

ALPHA BETA

Alpha Beta Chapter Article for DKG Fall Newsletter 2020

Much like DKG chapters all across the nation, the Alpha Beta Chapter has continued to stay con-

nected using “Zoom” as the digital platform. Needless to say, there is nothing that takes the place

of face-to-face meetings but under our current leadership, our chapter members have maintained

a strong connection. We have a total of 34 members and have plans to expand that membership,

which will be a focus for this year. Our chapter president has issued a challenge that we add five

new members during this current program year and we are ready to take on that challenge.

The exchange of officers took place during a Zoom meeting held on July 26, 2020, for that specific

purpose. The new officers installed for the next biennium are: President Vicki Lete; First Vice Presi-

dent Kathy Fries; Second Vice President Judy Reeves; Secretary Brenda Logan; Treasurer Karen

Gankler; and Parliamentarian Idru Vibbert. Many expressions of thanks were shared with the out-

going officers who did a tremendous job.

We have some amazing ladies in our chapter and our president recognized and thanked several

who received pins for their years of service: Carolyn Kays for 40 years; Betty Ann Luscher for 50

years; and Betty McKay for 60 years. These ladies have worked hard in different roles from com-

mittee chairs to presidents and laid the groundwork for the current success of our chapter. We can-

not thank them enough.

A planning meeting was held on August 3rd via the Zoom platform when there was a detailed discus-

sion regarding who would serve on each chapter committee. President Vicki Lete led a discussion and

it was decided that the committees and committee chairs would be solidified at the next meeting. The

final committees were decided during the October Zoom meeting and copies of those committee

members and chairs were sent to all members prior to the November Zoom meeting. Committees are

in the process of developing plans for this current year and that information will be shared at the De-

cember meeting. The chapter feels we are accomplishing “business as usual” but certainly in a differ-

ent format.

The Alpha Beta Chapter will continue to support the local Family Scholar House as we have done the

past few years. There has also been discussion about expanding our support to an additional organiza-

tion. We also continue to offer grant-in-aid scholarships to those students who plan to become teach-

ers and consistently receive notes of appreciation from those who receive aid. We have a purpose and

we want to use this kind of information about our mission and become stronger in the area of sharing

the underlying goals and objectives of our chapter, which in turn support the DKG core values. A way

to do this is through better use of digital platforms.

Several of our members attended the virtual fall conference experience when we gained important

information. We appreciate the work that went into the presentations and that was shared with all

DKG members. We look forward to receiving updated information about the spring conference.

We value our entire membership. We support our members who are ill or experiencing troubling

times, but we also celebrate birthdays and special occasions and events that involve our members.

Additionally, we want to give a “shout out” to Diana Motsch who has served in every role in our chap-

ter, none better than keeping years of scrapbook information about our chapter. Also, we want to

congratulate Alexis Lete, the daughter of our chapter president. Alexis is the reigning Miss Indiana of

2020 and competed for the Miss USA title of 2020. Alexis is a Cum Laude graduate of George Wash-

ington University and is currently a model and actress.

Many experiences and events have been very different for all of us or have not happened at all. This

range of occurrences has been from DKG meetings, to church, to school, to celebrations, and many

things beyond. We continually need to keep the educators across our nation in our thoughts and pray-

ers as they serve our students in ways never experienced.

In summary, someone recently shared that out of this current Covid pandemic, the importance and

value of human connections and relationships will be forever realized and appreciated in a very differ-

ent way. We send our best to all DKG members across the state!

ALPHA DELTA

The executive board of Alpha Delta has met twice. First, on August 10 on Zoom, and next they gath-

ered on August 18 to celebrate the 40 year membership of two of its members, Pam Corum and Peggy

Darnall. A pin was given as well as roses in commemoration of the event. Thanks to Pat’s Florist for

the donation of roses.

On Sept 1, an informal general meeting for the membership was called on Zoom. Eight members attended. Members were reminded about the Sept. 12 Fall Conference on Zoom and available scholar-ships for members and non-members. Members voted to give 11 new teachers each a $25 gift card and send it with a personal note. Members volunteered to read to Kindergarten students virtually. Loretta read the names of the members who received “Women of Vision Certificates” from the State President, Beth Pyle.

An informal “fieldtrip” took place at Roberts Family Farm in Guston on Oct 6. We got to visit among ourselves, go on a hayride, pick pumpkins, and eat some tasty treats. Wish more of us had been there. We just talked more to make up for those not in attendance who were either on Fall Break or watching grandchildren. LOL.

ALPHA EPSILON

Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma

After waiting on restrictions of our current pandemic, Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma

was able to meet Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the outdoor pavilion of Post Oak Baptist Church in Rus-

sellville. Outgoing President Carole Sindorf welcomed the 14 members in attendance on the beautiful,

breezy fall morning. Doris Carver presented the Thought of the Day which included items or thoughts

that we value and how they may have changed over the days of the pandemic. Members agreed that

they value family, church, relationships and get togethers more than they did pre-2020.

Sarah Flowers presented the program: Installation of Officers for 2020-2022. Each new officer pledged

their service to the organization. The following officers were installed:

President: Doris Carver

1st Vice President: Paula Clark

2nd Vice President: Jackie Powell

Recording Secretary: Marisa Hopkins

Corresponding Secretary: Ann Seidler & Karen Grosnik

Treasurer: Becky Page

Parliamentarian: Sarah Flowers

After the installation of officers, the business meeting was called to order by President Doris Carver.

The executive committee had previously met by zoom to work on planning meetings that will be bene-

ficial and well attended by the members while keeping all considerations of the pandemic in mind.

Isabella Bond was the recipient of the Grant -in-Aid scholarship. Plans are for her to attend a future

meeting. The deadline of the Grant-in-Aid scholarship will remain at March 1, 2021 for the current

year.

Members in attendance wrote cards to members not able to attend as the loneliness of 2020 is very

real and we value the membership of each one.
