LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE
Students (and alumni) at rehearsal for the school play.
Dear Parishioners,
In his classic spiritual text from the middle of the 20th Century, Secrets of the Interior Life, Archbishop Luis Martinez refers to "the Divine Paradox." To reach God, we have to lower ourselves. To ascend, we have to descend. He writes,
It seems to me that God in His own way feels the dizziness of the abyss: our miserableness, when it is acknowledged and accepted by us, exerts an irresistible attraction on Him. What, save misery alone, can attract mercy? What, save emptiness, can appeal to plenitude? Whither shall the infinite ocean of Goodness pour itself except into the immense abyss of our nothingness?
The virtue of humility is elemental in the spiritual and moral life. When we say humility, we don't mean thinking we're terrible, worthless people whom no one, including God, could ever love. Obviously that's not true. The parable of the prodigal son is proof of God's unconditional love for us.
Humility, rather, means we are nothing on our
own. This is the 'nothingness' about which Martinez writes. We cannot complete ourselves. We are de-pendent. We are poor. We are in need.
Pride is the opposite of humility. With pride we think we are self-sufficient. We can be self-reliant, as we have, within ourselves, all we require. We are com-plete and truly have no need for anyone else. In a word, we make ourselves into God. That was the sin of Satan. He could not see himself as nothing.
When we acknowledge our nothingness, we open ourselves to God. God lowers himself and fuses him-self into our heart. He is attracted by the abyss of our misery. He is like the generous father in the parable. The father loves and is overjoyed by his miserable son.
So, humility is not a Jansenistic, destructive virtue. If we can only project out, we will realize that, when we are humble, God will come to us and we will be richer than we ever could have imagined. It is the prodigal son's humility we should imitate. This weekend, March 29-31, is our school play, Mary Poppins, Jr. The students and parents have put many hours into the production, so please consider coming to a performance. Good luck, students, and thank you parents who have helped with everything.
Pastoral Council will meet this Monday at 7:00pm. My regular Tuesday Theology Talks will start up again this Tuesday, April 2nd at 7:00pm in the chap-el. The four-week series on prayer is concluded, though I hope that does not stop our journey in the spiritual life! The talk this Tuesday will be on Saint Pe-ter, both the history of his life and an analysis of his experiences as we know about from Scripture. On Wednesday CCD will do its annual Stations of the Cross at 7:00pm in the church, hosted by the 5th graders.
Next Saturday, April 6th from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the church is the Dynamic Catholic Marriage Enrich-ment event, featuring Dr. Allen Hunt and much more. We are very fortunate to be able to host this tremen-dous event. Please consider attending, whether you're new at the "marriage business" or a veteran...or you're not even married, like me!
Also that same Saturday night is the annual Men's Club Final Four Party in the gym. This is a fun evening and a great fundraiser for the Men's Club. The Men's Club, like the Mothers’ Club, has been very helpful in supporting financially our various projects around the parish and school. Thank you for your good work!
Yours in Christ, Fr. James

This posture of the prodigal son in prayer, from John Macallan Swan's 1888 painting, is one no person should be ashamed to make. It is a posture of
authenticity. The boy is in "dire need" (Lk 14:14). He has hit 'rock bottom.' Does he suppress his agony? No. He admits his life has become unmanageable and enters into the depths of the abyss. He bundles his darkness, shame, and uncertainty into a little gift the outline of his fists, and lifts that gift to God. He cannot see it, as he raises his meagre offering in trusting torment, but the Father delights. A heavenly light shines on the prodigal son's exposed back. In the desolate, early spring landscape, flowers have bloomed. There is beauty in the vulnerability.
The prodigal son "comes to his senses." He makes the decision, in the words of the Third Step, "to turn his will and his life over to the care of God." He does not know how his story will end, but he trusts God. There is no greater experience of love than remaining with the Father in pain. This sets him on the path to awakening—to resurrection. He will journey home.
It was only because the prodigal son entered into the fullness of pain in prayer that he could be healed. We might not have 'watershed moments' on the level of the prodigal son or a recovering alcoholic, but there are experiences of darkness we all face. The choice is to suppress the situation or embrace it. When we embrace it, we turn it over to God. He will accept our gift. What exactly he will choose to do with it and make of it, we are not sure. It turned out well in the prodigal son's case. Rev. James Wallace

YOUR WORSHIP AID
SUNDAY
The First Reading is from the Book of Joshua (5:9a-12). Joshua was Moses' successor responsible for bringing the Israelites into Canaan, the Promised Land. This is a fulfillment of God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God is faithful to his promises even when the people rebel against him. It is as if God is welcoming them home. Here they celebrate the annual Passover and eat of the produce of the land rather than the manna that had sustained them all those years. The Second Reading is taken from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians (5:17-21). The reading begins with the words: “…Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.” The sacrament of Baptism brings about in the soul a total transformation. All sin is wiped away and we are filled with the life of Christ. Though Christ was innocent, he became a sin offering for guilty humanity. Joined to Christ, believers are restored to friendship with him. The Gospel Reading is from the Gospel of St. Luke (15:1-3, 11-32). Here we have the familiar story that we call "The Prodigal Son," which should more appropriately be called "The Forgiving Father." Through this parable, Jesus not only teaches about God’s great mercy, but he also hopes to reach the hearts of the Pharisees. If they would open their hearts to him, they too would be welcome to sit at God’s table. But if they remain self-righteous, judgmental and hardhearted, they will exclude themselves from the Kingdom of God.
—Fr. Emanuel Torres-Fuentes
READING I: JOSHUA 5:9A, 10-12
The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.”
While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they celebrated the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth of the month. On the day after the Passover, they ate of the produce of the land in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain. On that same day after the Passover, on which they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased. No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
“Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.”
CONFITEOR
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (strike breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

LAMB OF GOD
Agnus Dei, qui tolis pecata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tolis pecata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tolis pecata mundi: Dona nobis pacem.

NICENE CREED
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
READING 2: 1 CORINTHIANS 5:17-21
Brothers and sisters: Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
GOSPEL: LUKE 15:1-3, 11-32
Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So to them Jesus addressed this parable: “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’
So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’ So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.’ But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest
robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’ He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’”

TREASURES FROM OUR
TRADITION
Today, “Laetare Sunday,” breaks the somberness of Lent for a little rejoicing, and the readings all summon us to an awareness of reconciliation. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is today’s Gospel story of the runaway son and the prodigal father. Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning “spendthrift or extrav-agant to a degree bordering on recklessness,” and alt-hough the boy maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is prodigal with forgiveness. Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, mid-way through Lent, the “elect” were focusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them by Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some places, the elect were even bedecked with roses on this day. A person bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person formed by the Eucharist and com-mitted to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That’s you! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD FORGIVES
The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” After forty years of wan-dering in the desert, this hard-headed people have finally reached the Promised Land. No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland. God has kept the prom-ise to their parents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and ful-filled the promise. The “take-away” for us is that there is no sin that is unforgivable. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the words spoken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WORSHIP AID FOR CHILDREN
DEAR CHILDREN & PARENTS
We are so happy you are here at Saint Juliana for Mass! We encourage you to sit up in the front pews so you can see what is happening. Also feel free to sit up in the balcony. Parents, don’t worry if you come in late or need to go to the back for a timeout, and especially don’t worry if you make noise during the service. Your presence adds so much to our community. Children, feel free to use this page to color during Mass and take home with you. We hope your family experiences Jesus!
