December 10, 2017 2nd Sunday of Advent
Sunday, December 10, 2017, 2nd Sunday of Advent The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed:
"One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." MK 1:1-8

Special Collection for St. Joseph Seminary College (St. Ben’s)
There will be a second collection the weekend of December 9th and 10th to
benefit St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary to help them with the repairs needed
after a disastrous flood in 2016. Thirty buildings received at least two feet of
water and the damages are estimated in the millions of dollars. The monks of
the abbey have been educating and forming young men as candidates for the
priesthood. In order for the monks to continue their mission of forming seminarians for the
priesthood, they need our generous support.
Please make your check payable to St. Aloysius Church and indicate St. Joseph’s Seminary in
the memo line and place your contribution in the second collection.
Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Our Challenge
Dear friends, The Prophet Isaiah uses words of encouragement to the exiles in Babylon in this weekend’s first reading. To everyone and everywhere, in all times and in all places, we are called to prepare ourselves for what God will do. God surely brings comfort for our distress and the assurance that he is there to help us. In our passage from his second letter, St. Peter gives a stern warning to all: The coming of Christ in judgment will be like the arrival of a thief in the night. God does not want anyone to be lost, but He is waiting patiently for all to repent. We are to faithfully await God’s coming by living in faithfulness and holiness. As we prepare for the coming of Christmas, we are told by John the Baptist to “Prepare the way of the Lord” with repentance and for-giveness of sin. We can do this by working for those things that will fulfill Christ’s mission on earth. We all have gifts and unique contributions that can aid in Christ’s coming into the world. In fact, we need eccentric people, people with slightly different angles on things, because they serve as reminders that truth is always bigger that the boxes we try to keep it in. Sometimes, as with John the Baptist, the eccentric person can point us in the direction of reality we might otherwise not see. Have a good week!
Love and prayers, Father Randy

“The Long Night” A candlelight service for
healing from loss. Thursday, December 21, 2017 6:00 p.m.
The longest night of the year is the winter solstice on December 21st when the darkness threatens to overtake the light. Those who have experience loss often feel as though they are enduring that long night. Yet, Jesus promises to comfort those who have heavy hearts when He says, “Come to me all you who labor and are heavily laden and I will give you rest.” Many in our community have heavy hearts due to the loss of a loved one in death, the loss of homes and property, the loss of employment or the loss of a significant relationship. The Long Night is a non-denominational prayer service intended for anyone who has experience a loss during the past year. The service will provide an opportunity to be comforted by the shared expression of grief and the promise of the Lord’s healing presence.

St. Damasus I December 11th feast day All lovers of Scripture have reason to celebrate this day. Damasus was the pope who commissioned Saint Jerome to translate the Scriptures into Latin, the Vulgate version of the Bible. Damasus was a sixty-year-old deacon when he was elected bishop of Rome in 366. His reign was marked by violence from the start when another group decided to elect a different pope. Both sides tried to enforce their selections through violence. Though the physical fighting stopped, Damasus had to struggle with these opponents throughout his years as pope. Damasus may not have won this battle directly, but he won the war by initiating works that outlasted all his opponents. Not only did he commission the Vulgate translation but he also changed the liturgical language of the Church from Greek to Latin. He worked hard to preserve and restore the catacombs, the graves of the martyrs, and relics. From The Faith of the Early Fathers , by William A.
