SUNDAY AFTER THEOPHANY (Scriptural text below taken from www.usccb.org/bible, United States Conference of Catholic Bish-ops)

EPISTLE: EPHESIANS 4:7-13

But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore, it says: “He ascended* on high and took prisoners captive; he gave gifts to men. What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended into the lower [regions] of the earth? The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ.

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 4:12-17

When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen.” From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Food for Thought and Fuel for Action from Pope Francis on Peace

His Grace, +Bishop JOHN, has identified for our consideration the address of His Holi-ness, Francis, the Pope of Rome, on the World Day of Prayer for Peace, which takes place on January 1st. To that end, we provide you with the link here so that you may read the Pope’s ad-dress: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/peace/documents/papa-frances-co_20181208_messaggio-52giornatamondiale-pace2019.html

A Correction regarding our Eparchial Calendar and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Notwithstanding the 2019 calendar as printed, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday of January, which occurs on January 21 instead of January 14. As a result, Divine Liturgy will be served at 9 a.m. but the parish offices will be closed for the day and Sixth Hour will not be celebrated in the Cathedral.

Nevertheless, as the Catholic Church in the United States encourages the faithful to pray for the ecclesial reunion of all Christians during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, this year from January 18 to 25, so should the efforts of Rev. King towards greater racial justice in our country should encourage us to pray and strive for greater fairness, solidarity, and amity amongst Ameri-cans of all races and classes, starting firstly with our increasingly diverse Byzantine Catholic Church of America.

States Conference of Catholic Bishops to observe Tuesday, January 22, the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, as a National Day of Prayer and Penance for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Our Cathedral will host the Office of Small Compline for the Sanctity of Life as a Byzantine Catho-lic observance of this tragic anniversary. Please consider joining us at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22. In addition, given that this day is set aside for prayer and penance, it would be us to appropri-ate to consider prayerfully what acts of additional prayer – if you are not coming on that night – and some kind of abstinence or equivalent observance should be offered on January 22.

All Souls Saturdays are coming! Make sure all your beloved dead are prayed for. Please update your diptychs or hramoty lists with the Parish Office. Mk 10:45: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve…”

Our Sunday Socials are possible only because of selfless, conscientious people like Mary Beth Foster who help with either set-up before of clean-up after our time together in the Parish Hall after Divine Liturgy. However, we need more help. Kindly contact Loretta Winn at (602) 332-2520.

Attention, ladies: TWO New Opportunities to Grow in Holiness Together!

On Friday, January 4, we had the debut of our new Women’s Group as an opportunity for our ladies to grow in holiness and to support each other prayerfully and socially to that end. As with the Men’s Group, the Women’s Group will meet twice a month, only on Friday evenings in-stead of Tuesdays. The next meeting is on Friday, January 18 at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral. For more information, please contact Fr. Diodoro.

In addition, the Catholic Women of Phoenix (formerly the Phoenix Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, of our Roman Catholic brethren in Christ) invites our Byzantine Catholic ladies to its 2019 Phoenix Women’s Conference on Saturday, February 9 at Founders Hall of Xavier Col-lege Preparatory School in Phoenix. This conference has the support of and will feature the pres-ence of our Apostolic Administrator seda plena, His Excellency, Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted.

For more information, please contact the Catholic Women of Phoenix at [email protected] or (602) 471-1944. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com/e/2019-phoenix-catholic-womens-con-ference-tickets

On February 2nd, the Catholic men of Phoenix can take part in another fine day of inspi-ration and support, thanks to the Catholic Men’s Fellowship. The theme is “A New Knighthood”, inspired by Archbishop Chaput’s challenge and call to the men gathered in Phoenix last year. Already several men from our parish are looking to go!
