Summit Bechtel Reserve to Host Its 2nd National Boy Scout Jamboree

The 2017 Boy Scout National Jamboree will be held July 19-28, 2017 at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia.

Arbuckle Area Council has joined with Cimarron Council (Enid) and the Cherokee Area Council (Bartlesville) to reserve a troop at the National Jambo-ree. There are still available spots for interested Scouts.

The fee per participant is $1,800. The cost includes: Jamboree registration, transportation, hotel lodging, meals, t-shirts, patches, and equipment at the Jambo-ree site (tents, cots, cooking gear.) Participants are responsible for personal gear such as sleeping bags, uniforms, and toiletries.

• Scouts and team members MUST have a current BSA membership

with a Boy Scout troop or Varsity Scout team.

• MUST be at least a First Class Scout.

• MUST be at least 12 years of age by the first day of the Jamboree or

an 11 year old that has graduated the 6th grade, but has not reached

their 18th birthday by the last day of the Jamboree.

• Be approved by the unit leader and Arbuckle Area Council.

• MUST have appropriate parent/guardian to complete the online pa-

rental consent. (An email will be sent to the parent/guardian during the

application process.)

• Participate in pre-Jamboree training experience with the Council.

• Filed a BSA Health & Medical Record with their council within one

year of attending the Jamboree. Submit all registrations fees per the Arbuckle Area Council’s payment

schedule.

All New Cub Scouts are invited to get a taste of what Cub Scouts is all about.

The day will consist of: archery, bb’s, games, crafts, and a free lunch.

Still Standing…Camp Simpson 2016

A big thank you is extended to all those that helped with the tornado cleanup at Camp Simpson.

On Monday afternoon, May 9, 2016, an EF-3 hit Camp Simpson, just to the west of Bromide. During the storm, six buildings at Camp Simpson were hit and damaged; Carlock Lodge, Mabee Dining Hall (Upper Dining Hall), Matthews Building, Phil-Kit Building, Duffer Lodge and the Campmaster Cabin.

Hundreds of trees were strewn around the property. Our many friends of Camp Simpson arrived in the weeks following and rallied together to help clean up camp for the approaching Summer Camp season.

Thank you to our many Scouts and leaders who helped. Also thank you to the following companies for their help. Wade Hisle and Hisle Brothers, It’s Worth It Liquidation, Chickasaw Nation Division of Youth Services, Ada Coca-Cola, and Matt Christensen at Warren Cat.

As a thank you to those who helped, a special commemorative patch was designed for those assisting in the clean up.

Jamboree On the Air

Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is the

largest Scouting event in the world. It

will be held the weekend of Oct. 14th-

16th, 2016.

JOTA uses amateur radio to link

Scouts and hams around the world,

around the nation, and in your own com-

munity.

Scouts of any age can participate, from

Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Ventur-

Jamboree On the Internet

Oct. 15th-16th

Jamboree-on-the-Internet, or JOTI, is an

annual international Scouting event

sponsored by the World Organization of

the Scout Movement. Scouts communi-

cate with each other using Internet-

enabled devices such as computers,

laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. Scouts can participate at home with the

help of an adult, or they can participate

in a Scout group at a council event. JOTI

is an economical way to participate in an

international jamboree. JOTI participa-

tion fulfills requirements for Tiger and

Arrow of Light adventures, the Citizen-

ship in the World merit badge, and the

This year’s popcorn season started off with a bang with popcorn train-ing. This year’s popcorn sale theme is, “Helping You Become A Pop-corn Avenger.”

This year’s sale promises to be better than ever! District Popcorn Kernel’s are: Chickasaw District, Amanda Johnson, Harry Miller District, Kelly Cook, Washita District Ashley Knight, and overall Ar-buckle Area Council Chief Popcorn Kernel is Jamie Amos.

Cub Scout Fall Monster Mash “A Spooktacular Event“A Spooktacular Event“A Spooktacular Event“A Spooktacular Event””””

Creepy and crawly things will be out and about at this year’s Cub Scout Fall Monster Mash. Monster Mash gives families an option of two hauntingly fun sessions to pick from.

October 28th-29th is Session One, Session Two is October 29th-30th. The event has a fall festival theme with a costume contest for each rank, games, Spook Trail, movie, and haunted house. Cracker Barrel is provided in the evening and a continental breakfast in the morning. See www.arbucklebsa.org for the form.

Scout Day at the Chickasaw Cultural Center

Bring your Scouts to the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma for a fun-filled day and participate in activities that fulfill badge require-ments. The event will take place on September 24th-25th.

All Scouts and leaders in uniforms or scouting t-shirts will receive free admission to the Chikasaw Poya Exhibit Center.

A special commemorative patch will also be issued. Sack lunches are available for $2 (please pre-order at least 72 hours in advance, see below #) or bring your own.

Venture Crew 468 to Host Horse Camp at Camp Simpson

Crew 468 is hosting its first ever Horse Camp at Camp Simpson the weekend of September 9th-11th. Scouts must be 14 years or older. The camp is also open to leaders. The cost is $125 with a maximum number of 10 participants. Scouts will need to have completed the Horsemanship Merit Badge. Breakfast and supper are provided. Check in will be at the Carlock Lodge by 5 PM on Friday, September 9th. Please bring a bedroll, hygiene items, hat, bug spray, and boots. Horses are provided. Day Day Day Day at East Central University

The first ever 2016 Cub Scout Adventure Day for Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos, and Arrow of Light will be offered on Saturday, October 8th from 12:30 PM– 5:30 PM at East Central University in Ada. The event is sponsored by the Wisawanik Lodge 190 and hosted by the Harry Miller Chapter of the Lodge. Cost for the day is $10. Late registration is $15. Space is limited to 120 Scouts.

Awards and Advancement that will be worked on include: Interna-tional Spirit, Donor Awareness Award, and World Conservation Award. Tigers will complete Stories in Shape and Tiger Tag Adven-tures, Wolves will complete the Spirit of the Water Adventure and will work on Grow Something Adventure.

Bears will complete the Baloo the Builder Adventure and Critter Care Adventure. Webelos and Arrow of Light’s can finish: Aqua-naut or Science or free swim and two of the following: Build My Own Hero, Looking Back/Looking Forward, Moviemaking or Sports-man. OCT 21-22 BS TRAINING, CAMP SIMPSON

Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training

The course will provide Scoutmasters with the basic information and tools they need to lead successful Boy Scout troops. Scout-masters and assistant Scoutmasters who complete this course, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, and Youth Protec-tion Training are considered "trained" for those positions.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

Working as patrols, this hands-on course provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teach-ing Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank. Along with Scoutmaster Specifics this course is required of all direct contact leaders registered in Boy Scout Troops and Varsity Scout Teams, in order to be considered "trained".

OCT 21-22 BALOO TRAINING, CAMP SIMPSON

Check-in at Carlock Lodge between 6 -7 PM, $10

This overnight course is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for those leaders who are inter-ested in adding a camping component to their Pack activi-ties. BALOO is an instructor-led course which is conducted at the Council level. BSA's Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the necessary tools to help units carry out a successful camping experience.

Completion of this course is mandatory for at least one

adult on a Pack overnighter.

OCT 22, CS LEADER TRAINING, CAMP SIMPSON

Check-in at Noon, Carlock Lodge (eat before you come if you arriving on Sat.

Cubmaster & ACM Specific Training

This course is intended to provide Cubmasters with the infor-mation and tools they need to successfully lead a Cub Scout pack. Cubmasters and assistants who complete this training and Youth Protection training are considered “trained” for both posi-tions.

Den Leader Specific Training

This course is intended to provide Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and We-belos den leaders with the information and tools they need to conduct successful den meetings. Den leaders who complete the Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos training, along with Youth Pro-tection training, are considered trained for their position.

2016 Winter Camp at Camp Simpson

Before you know it, Winter Camp will be here. Make plans now to attend with your unit. Adam Wrublewski is continu-ing in his 2nd season as the Winter Camp Director.

Deposit per troop reservation is $100 and is due by Octo-ber 12, 2016. Early Bird Scout fees for the camp if re-ceived by November 11th is $140 per Scout or if received after this date $170.

Troops that volunteer to teach two or more different merit badge classes will receive a 10% discount from their total fees. The troop must turn in a list of what merit badge classes will be taught by Nov. 11, 2016. Merit Badge Instructors are needed, please contact the Council Office (580) 223-0831 if you can help.

Merit Badge classes that are on the schedule include: Camping, Cit. Community, Cit. Nation, Cit. World, Commu-nications, Cooking, Emergency Preparedness, Envt’l. Sci-ence, Family Life, First Aid, Personal Fitness, Personal Mgmt., Archery, Astronomy, Auto Maintenance, Chess, Crime Prevention/Fingerprinting, Digital Technology, Elec-tricity, Fishing, Forestry, Geocaching, Home Repair, Horse-manship, Leatherworking, Moviemaking, Plumbing, Public Health, Rifle, Soil & Water Conservation, Wood Carving, and Woodwork.

Please note that these classes have a maximum number of students and will be held as long as there are enough instructors, etc.

This is the original bugle that was played at the first Camp Simpson ses-sion sometime in the 1930’s.

Ms. Helen “Stacy” Miller LaBare, the granddaughter of Harry & Helen Miller recently donated the bugle to the Council.

The elder Helen Miller was the camp cook. She bugled during the first session of camp held at Camp Simpson. The bugle is an “Official Boy Scout Bugle.”

The bugle is on display at the council service center.

Christopher “Chris” Riddle, was an International Scout from the United Kingdom dur-ing the summer of 2003. Chris helped with our Summer Camp Program at Camp Simpson.

Chris is married and expect-ing his first child in August. He is still involved with Scout-ing as time allows. He is a police officer in Lewisham (southeast of London), which is part of the Metropolitan po-lice force.
