15th day. Leaving for Germany
The topic of the workshop is inspired from the necessity of the Saxon fortified churches fromTransylvania (containing monuments which are part of the UNESCO patrimony) to be promoted
properly as objectives of cultural tourism at a national and international scale. The Saxons were a population of German origin who settled to the region of Transylvania in the Middle Ages and left ahuge patrimony. They only left this land in the end of the XXth century (80s and 90s) in the end of thecommunist period in Romania. Finding a new use for all their abandoned houses, buildings andchurches in a great challenge for the present society.
The students will work at an urban scale, as well as at a detailed one. The workshop has threecomponents:
1. a summer school - conferences held by professionals about medieval patrimony inTransylvania and especially the Saxon fortified citadels, specific problems, methods of interventionetc.
2. the realization of concrete projects and proposals by teams of German and Romanianstudents (3-4 students per team)
3. the direct knowledge of architectural and historical patrimony from Transylvania and of the most important Saxon fortified churches.
The results of the workshop will be published in a book edited by the Ion Mincu Publishing
House and the resulted projects will be exhibited and shown on the web.
