Read one book from the Required List for the grade level you will be entering in the fall. 1) Complete the activities on the last page about the book. 2) Read five other books or magazines of your choice. 3) Write the title and author for each of the books you‛ve selected on the bottom of the last page. 4) Get your parent/guardian signature before turning in the form on the first day of school!

Required Reading

Choose 1 required read + 5 other books or magazines of your choice

Some children may not be able to read these books independently. If this is the case we encourage you to read the books to or with your child. REQUIRED READ: Choose one of the next three books. Level 1: Lost Treasure of the Emerald Eye (Geronimo Stilton, No. 1) It all started when Geronimo’s sister, Thea, discovered a mysterious map. It showed a secret treasure on a faraway island. It was an adventure He’d never forget.... Level 2: What a Trip, Amber Brown by Paula Danziger Best friends Amber Brown and Justin Daniels are taking a vacation together! There’s just one problem—Justin’s little brother, Danny. Can Amber find a way to make Danny go away so she can have Justin all to herself? Level 3: I Survived Hurricane Katrina by Lauren Tarshis At first, Katrina doesn't seem to be as bad as predicted. But overnight the levees break, and Barry's world is literally torn apart. He's swept away by the floodwaters, away from his family. STUDENT CHOICE: Choose at least five more books or any other book or magazine of your choice. Level 1: Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne This series is an interesting mix of fiction & nonfiction. Each book takes the characters (siblings Jack & Annie) to another place and/or time to get a clue to solve a mystery or challenge. American Girl (series includes Meet Molly, An American Girl; Meet Felicity, An American Girl and others) Young readers can compare the lives of Addy, Felicity, Josefina, Kaya, Kirsten. Kit, Molly, and Samantha share their dreams and the dilemmas of growing up. The heroines were strong and independent girls and some things in their lives were very different from today. But others­­like families, friendships, and feelings­­haven't changed at all. Sleds on Boston Common by Louise Borden Henry complains to the royal governor, General Gage, after his plan to sled down the steep hill at Boston Common is thwarted by the masses of British troops camped there. Captain Underpants Series by Dav Pilkey George and Harold have created the greatest superhero in the history of their elementary school­­and now they're going to bring him to life! Meet Captain Underpants! His true identity is so secret, even HE doesn't know who he is!

Dragonbreath Series by Ursula Vernon The Dragonbreath books tell of the adventures of Danny Dragon, a young dragon attending a school for reptiles and amphibians. Join Danny and his best friend Wendell the Iguana as they travel under the sea outwitting bullies, fending off giant squid, meet giant heron, run from ninjas, and fight were­hotdogs, all the while trying to avoid getting an F in Science! Nate the Great Series by Marjorie Sharmat After a generous breakfast of pancakes, Nate, the boy detective, plunges into each new and baffling case, solves the mystery, and tracks down the culprits. Dog Days: Rhymes Around the Year by Jack Prelutsky Grandfather’s Journey by Allen Say A Japanese American man recounts his grandfather's journey to America which he later also undertakes, and the feelings of being torn by a love for two different countries. Books by Gail Gibbons – Includes: Apples, Bats, Cats, Deadline: From News to Newspaper, Dogs, Ducks, Fill it up: all about service stations, Fire! Fire!, Grizzly bears, How a House is built, Knights in shining armor, Marshes & swamps, My Baseball book, and many others. Falling up, Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends by *Shel Silverstein Shel Silverstein’s poetry for children is often silly, humorous and a little strange. Level 2: On the Mayflower: Voyage of a Ship’s Apprentice and a Passenger Girl by Kate Waters A twelve­year­old apprentice and a seven­year­old passenger experience the first voyage of the Mayflower. Cam Jansen Adventures by David Adler Fifth grader Cam Jansen uses her phenomenal photographic memory to solve mysteries. Stories are in "Beginning Chapter­Book" format. Ike and Mem Series by Patrick Jennings Features the adventures of Ike, his sister Mem, and his best friend Buzzy.

Judy Moody Series by Megan McDonald Entertaining stories portray challenges and pleasures from a kid’s perspective and believable episodes from third grade.

Stink Series by Megan McDonald Entertaining stories from Judy Moody’s kid brother, Stink.

Diary of A Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney As Greg says in his diary, “Just don’t expect me to be all ‘Dear Diary’ this and ‘Dear Diary’ that.” Luckily, what Greg Heffley says he won’t do and what he actually does are two very different things. Books by Jack Prelutsky: The Dragons are Singing Tonight, The Frogs Wore Red Suspenders, If Not for the Cat: Haiku, The New Kid on the Block: Poems, Pizza the Size of the Sun, Scranimals.

A­Z Mysteries: Absent Author by Ron Roy Dink and his friends investigate a variety of mysterious occurrences in their hometown. This intriguing mystery series for young readers is a great introduction to the mystery genre. The Chicken Squad Series by Doreen Cronin They might be chicks, but they sure aren’t chicken, and they’re on a mission. Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie. These chicks are not your typical barnyard puffs of fluff, and they are not about to spend their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs. No sir, they’re too busy solving mysteries and fighting crime. Books by Greg Tang –The Best of Times, The Grapes of Math, Math Appeal,Math­terpieces Level 3: Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi When the Grace children go to live at their Great Aunt Lucinda's worn Victorian house, they discover a field guide to fairies and other creatures and begin to have some very unusual experiences. Our Strange New Land, Elizabeth’s Jamestown Colony Diary, Book One by Patricia Hermes Written in journal format, the story focus on young Elizabeth and the daily life of people who lived in Jamestown in 1609. Also, the characters in this series live on in future books. Journey to the New World: Diary of Patience Whipple by Kathryn Lasky Twelve­year­old Mem presents a diary account of the trip she and her family made on the Mayflower in 1620 and their first year in the New World. The Journal of Jasper Jonathan Pierce: Pilgrim Boy by Ann Rinaldi A fourteen­year­old indentured servant keeps a journal of his experiences on the Mayflower and during the building of Plymouth Plantation in 1620 and 1621. Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels by various authors Full­color, full­action, full­throttle sports stories­­featuring gifted writers and talented artists, these action­packed books are sure to please even the most reluctant of readers. Origami Yoda Series by Tom Angleburger This series follows the story of a young boy named Dwight Tharp who creates an origami likeness of Yoda from the Star Wars film franchise in order to give advice to other school students. Timmy Failure Series by Stephan Pastis Meet Timmy Failure an intelligent yet clueless, arrogantly overconfident detective. Women Who Broke the Rules Series by Kathleen Krull Women Who Broke the Rules celebrates the bold and brave women who have forged their own paths—breaking rules along the way­­to help shape our country's past, present, and future.
