Dear Parents and Carers, this will be our last newsletter before the summer break. The office will
be closed from Friday 20th
July (last day 19th
) to 6th
September. However, the email address will be
manned should anyone need to get in touch. Please see attached flyers for evening event on preparing
for adulthood and youth club activities over the summer (with term time details)
TRANSITION survey – 14 TO 25 but it is never too
early to start thinking of the future
Lewisham Parent and Carers Forum are looking to apply for grant funding to support young people with disabilities and additional needs through transition into adulthood.
For this funding we would employ two family workers to work with young people (and their parents/carers) in many areas, such as planning for the future, colleges and other further education, looking at work aspirations, work opportunities, writing cvs, preparing for interviews, help with financial skills, setting up bank accounts, looking at benefits, running workshops, and several activities for the young people. We would like to support young people to be as independent as possible in these areas. By sending this survey by email invitation collector email addresses will not be seen by others.

HEART ‘N’ SOUL - Squidz Club Friday 6th July, 7pm to 11pm The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford SE8 4AG www.heartnsoul.co.uk/category/taking_part/details/squidz_club Heart’n’Soul, Squidz Club is a fun night out in a safe environment for young people with learning disabilities, aged 10 to 25, plus their families and friends. The evening includes live music, disco, games room, dressing up and more. Hot food is available and there is a bar for the grown-ups who can also take a little time out in a separate quiet room.

THE BEAUTIFUL OCTOPUS CLUB
AT THE SOUTH BANK CENTRE
The Beautiful Octopus Club is back! We are so excited to return to Southbank Centre with our ground breaking inclusive club night of music and art on Friday 7 September. This year will be an unmissable evening of performances from Heart n Soul's bands and artists including Lizzie Emeh, The Fish Police, Pino Frumiento and Tilley Milburn. We'll also have our Club DJs playing hit after hit, as well as exhibitions of our vibrant artwork. This year the club is part of Unlimited, Southbank Centre's festival championing the work of disabled artists.

As we count down to the club, Heart n Soul's DJs are back by popular demand, playing tunes on the Southbank's Riverside Terrace. Head to the Southbank for a dance every Thursday from Thursday 26 July to Thursday 23 August, 5pm - 8pm.
Heart n Soul is an award-winning creative arts company and charity. They believe in the talents and power of people with learning disabilities, providing opportunities for people to discover, develop and share this power and talent as widely as possible.

Joining the disability register
The disability register is a voluntary register of children and young people under 18 who live
in the borough and have a disability or special educational need.
After you have registered
When you register, you will get a Max Card, which is a discount card for families of children with additional needs. It saves you money on days out at castles, zoos, bowling alleys and more.
Who can be on the register
Children and young people can be on the register if they:
are under 18 years old
live in the borough of Lewisham
have a special need from either a disability or a health condition including:
o visual or hearing impairment
o physical disability
o learning disability
o long term illness
o social communication disorder or development disorder e.g. autism, Tourette’s, Asperger's,
dyspraxia etc.
The benefits of registering
Get regular information on services, resources and activities for you and your child.
Stay informed about local information relating to special educational needs and disabled children.
Have your voice heard – it's an opportunity for parents, carers, children and young people to be
involved in consultations on existing and new service developments and ideas within the borough.
Get information on relevant national and local organisations.
What the register does
It helps us and local health services understand how many children and young people with a
disability live in the borough and the types of needs they have. This information helps us to
provide appropriate services and support.
It helps us target and direct information which is specific and relevant to your child and families
needs and interests.
It provides an opportunity for us to hear from children, young people and parents and carers about
how to improve the delivery of information, advice and support. This means we can work together
to develop better outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and
disabilities in Lewisham.

As part of the Children Act 1989, all social services departments must keep a register of children
and young people with disabilities to help with planning and monitoring of local services.
You don't have to register your child
Registration is voluntary, and your child will not be registered without parental consent. You can
remove your child or young person’s name at any time by contacting us.
You do not need to be on the register to be assessed or get services.
Registration does not automatically mean that your child is eligible for services, all children need to
be assessed individually.
Data protection
People cannot get information about individuals named on the register. We do not share any
information if you do not give consent.
We will only share statistical data with your consent to our partner organisations to help in the
development and planning of future services. We will handle and share information with sensitivity and care and adhere to the guidelines set out in the Data Protection Act 1998, unless it would put a child or young person at risk.
Keeping our disability register up to date
We aim to keep the disability register up to date to give us a better understanding of your child’s
needs. To do this, we will contact you sometimes to check that the information we have is up to date.
You are welcome to contact us at anytime to update and amend your child’s information.

SIBLINGS SUPPORT - For brothers or sisters of children with
learning disabilities/autism
Greenwich Mencap
Free fun day for primary school aged children who have a brother/sister with a learning disability and/or autism. Siblings play, make and create together while sharing experiences with other children in a similar situation provide fun sessions for primary school aged children during the school holidays where siblings can play, make and
create together. There’s time to chat and share experiences with other children. The sessions aim to help if things sometimes get a bit too much for them or they would like a chance to spend time with other children with similar experiences.
Information is available for children to take home if they feel they need it. The sessions are free.

Disability Watersports sessions

Get Your Folk On! Plus
Monday 13 August, 1:00pm - 3:00pm Cecil Sharp House, London
A creative folk workshop for disabled young people (12-24 year olds), their siblings and friends.
Through a focus on folk music, song and dance, Get Your Folk On! courses offer young musicians and/or dancers the chance to:
- play music by ear - no sheet music here!
- explore harmonies, riffs, chord sequences and folk techniques
- create arrangements in small and big bands
- sing and explore folk song history and culture
- try new instruments or dance forms
- gain performance skills with final sharing events
Courses are friendly, flexible and responsive to all young people’s needs and abilities, led by a team of skilled and engaging folk educators. No previous folk experience is required and no two courses are the same!

analysed. The Committee anticipates that some submissions will be published before the summer recess.
