I VIVIDLY REMEMBER... ...our first Christmas after Orphans Aid International started. We had only been going a few months – and to wake up here in NZ on Christmas morning and to know that our first 6 children in Romania were having their first Christmas ever was incredibly heartwarming. I had large photos of each of their faces on our fridge. Looking at them I hoped that each year our work would be enlarged. That Christmas, all we could do was to just keep the home running and open – but the 9 Christmases that have followed we’ve been able to hold special Christmas appeals to help not only the children in our care, but also children in institutions. Each year has been a little different and each year has included some children we’ve not reached before. Our Christmas Gift Cards have proven to be a great way to be able to provide and feed more and more needy children at Christmas. This Christmas let’s embrace more children. Let’s continue to do what we were made to do – rescue kids. I’m hoping this Christmas our appeal will enable us to see a new project in Uganda launched! Let’s raise enough funds to see the establishment of a programme run by Kiwis in Uganda – working with local people to help children to stay in families. Let’s prevent children from becoming orphans. Children staying with their birth families, if possible, is the best solution. If we can empower individuals to be able to care for their children – nothing is better than this. To see a programme established in Entebbe, Uganda that would initially reach around 100 children as well as their existing family connections. Placing within their hands the tools and understanding they need to provide for their family members. We’ve already been working with Peter and Danielle Gordon in Uganda, watching closely the developments there – you will have seen them featured in The Orphan Lady documentary earlier this year, when I visited with them in September 2011. We have opportunity to be a part of seeing this Family Strength- ening Programme launched and realised. To provide for the set-up and first year costs we’d love to raise $40,000 (NZD). I’m sure there will be many unexpected costs along the way but this would mean premises and staff can be provided for – and ultimately children’s lives radically changed. Children die needlessly in countries like Uganda. You can be part of preventing this. Our Gift Cards have extended this year to include ‘Launch an orphanage project – Uganda’. You can choose the amount you would like to donate. You can make the gift on behalf of a loved one or simply as a donation to our Ugandan Launch! This Christmas as we sit down to celebrate with a special meal, like me, you can have that extra warmth in your heart knowing that others are sharing it with you as well. Maybe not at your table, but a Christmas meal served with love from you. That’s very cool! Merry Christmas from my home to yours, with love from all the Orphans Aid International family here in NZ and further afield. I VIVIDLY REMEMBER......our first Christmas after Orphans Aid International started.

We have opportunity to be a part of seeing this Family Strength-ening Programme launched and realised.

ORPHANS AID INTERNATIONAL | NEW ZEALAND CHARITABLE TRUST CC27410 SUMMER NEWSLETTER2013/2014

Page 2: Summer Newsletter 2013/2014 – Orphans Aid International

Stefan (left) rescued, playing with his friend Maria (right). When Maria was given her first bath in July we discovered scars on her body from beatings she had endured. Maria is

happy to see her old friend from the hospital!

GLOBAL PROJECT UPDATESFrom the expansion of our work here at home with our first Fair Trade Fundraising shop in Queenstown, to the increasing capac-ity and renovations of our orphanage in Romania – thanks to your help. Russia also continues to go from strength to strength. There are now 60 children, 7 days a week, receiving care through the Ayushki centre. It was a blast being at our Summer Camp in Russia with a 13 strong team of NZ volunteers – who had all made sacrifices to be a part of it and helped in such a hands on way.

Meanwhile, in Uganda we've been able to strengthen several great projects, all caring for abandoned children. Your purchase of African goods through our shops is helping make this possible. It’s exciting to now be planning an increase of work there with the Gordon family.

India has also had much of our attention – with an ever increas-ing amount of street children reached, fed, clothed and given schooling – not only teaching them vital reading and writing skills, but protecting them from the risk of human trafficking and forced child labour. We’ve also opened our first flat here caring for some at-risk young girls. Sue plans to be in India as you are reading this newsletter – working with our team there.

We look forward to the new year – with the opportunities it will bring, and the sacrifices it will require. With your help in 2014, we can strengthen and grow our capacity to defend and liberate these young victims of neglect.

WAITING ANGELS FOR ORPHANSLet’s face it – Christmas is a very busy time of year! The truly important things you want your family to consider can be missed amongst it all.

‘Waiting Angels’ are a 100% fundraiser – thanks to the gener-ous design and donation of Michelle and her team at Old Mill Road for this personal and special fundraiser. Priced at only $19.95 (NZD) they are available for purchase on the response form, or at our shops and online store (plus $5 postage).

Placing a ‘Waiting Angel’ under your tree will not only help a waiting orphan without a mum and dad, it will remind you and your family of what’s truly important – and what Christmas is all about. Read The Angel Story on our website.

BREAKING NEWS – STEFAN RESCUEDWhen Sue was in Romania in July she picked up a young girl, Maria, who had been abused and was living at the hospital. Sadly she had to leave 18 month old Stefan behind in the cot next door. Sue described on Facebook and in e-newsletters how disturbing it was to hear him scream.

At the time of this going to print we have just heard he has been picked up from the hospital and taken into the care of our Casa Kiwi team. Maria was so excited to see her old friend from the hospital. This is such great news, he will now receive the love and care he needs.

To find our more about children just like Stefan, abandoned in Romanian hospitals, please check out our latest documentary - The Orphan Lady.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERSFounded in NZ in 2004, our work wouldn’t exist without our regular monthly Supporters. We’re reaching and caring for more children than ever before – but we are really in need of your regular support as we continue to reach and rescue more.

To become a regular monthly Supporter, complete the response form, visit our website, or give us a call to learn more.
