Summer 2011 ProgrammeCome and join Lancaster City Council for six weeks of exciting activitiesthat are guaranteed to keep you busy during the summer holiday.

The summer holidays are finally here and there’s no better way to spend your time thandashing outdoors and taking part in one of our exciting activities on offer in the Lancasterand Morecambe area.

You’ll never be stuck for something to do with over 120activities specially selected for young people and if theweather doesn’t turn out great, some of our activities arealso based indoors. New for this summer is a selection offree taster sessions and play events that are listed at theback of this programme.

Whatever you decide to try this holiday, you’re sure to havelots of fun, make new friends and have a truly memorableexperience.

How to use this guide The details for all of our holiday activities can be foundin this brochure, listed in both A to Z format and in a dayby day format. The back page also has an ‘at a glance’section that lists all the activities in date order.

Please note that each workshop has differentrequirements e.g. age, specific clothing, venues varyand transport is sometimes provided. Please see eachworkshop individually. Please also note that due to someworkshops being outdoors they are weather dependantand can be cancelled on the day. If you are concerned onthe day if a particular activity is running or not, pleasecontact Salt Ayre Sports Centre for confirmation.

Activities for under 8 year oldsThroughout our brochure you will find an increased number of workshops for 4 to 7year olds. PLEASE NOTE: A responsible adult must stay on site during any workshopfor children under 8 years old. PLEASE ALSO NOTE: Parents are expected to take partwith their child in some workshops.

Booking InformationBookings can be taken in three ways:

• In person (from Monday 4 July)

• By post (from Monday 4 July)

• By phone (from Monday 4 July)

1. To book and pay in person

Bookings with cash and card payments can be made in person by visiting Salt Ayre Sports

Centre between 7am and 9pm Monday to Friday, or between 9am and 6pm Saturday and

Sunday. Be sure to have a fully completed booking form for each applicant and your payment.

2. To book and pay by postal application (no cash, cheques only)

1. Cheques are the only means of payment when applying by post.

2. Firstly, fully complete a booking form (you will find two forms at the centre pages of

this booklet). Use only one form per person.

3. Calculate the cost of the activities booked.

4. Across your cheque, write in words “An amount not to exceed £...”

5. Make the cheque payable to Lancaster City Council and sign the cheque. We will write in the

final amount and send you your receipt.

6. Make sure you have signed and dated the declaration.

This system reduces the number of cheques that may have to be returned to customers, due to

the unavailability of some activities when booking. For example:

3 activities at £6 each = £18

Only two activities available, amount due = £12

Complete the process by placing your cheque(s) and booking form(s) in an envelope and send

Additional InformationActivity information - We strongly advise that all participants wear suitable clothing for the

activity that they are due to take part in. Information about suitable clothing or requirements

for each session can be found in pages 15 to 34.

Disabled access - Where possible, we use premises which are fully accessible. If you would like

more information, please do not hesitate to contact the holiday activity team on 01524 582825.

Passport to Leisure holders - If your child has or is included on a Passport to Leisure card, they are

entitled to £1 discount per activity.

the council’s website at www.lancaster.gov.uk/holidayprogramme.

The programme is correct at the time of going to print. However, the organisers reserve the right to make changes. Participationin all the activities is entirely at the participant’s own risk. Lancaster City Council regrets that under no circumstances can refundsbe given, unless the council cancels the activity due to minimum numbers or any unforeseen circumstances.

Aerial extreme – adventure ropes course and safari park NEW!Experience the exciting and exhilarating high adrenaline adventure ropes course with a new state ofthe art safety system. You really need a head for heights to do this activity as you tackle obstacleslike the ‘islands in the sky’ and the wobbly ‘do-the splits’ logs. Please note that children MUST beover 1.1m in height to take part in this activity. Once you’ve completed the ropes course it’s back onthe bus to visit the safari park and see lots of animals in their open environment. This is as close toseeing animals in the wild as you will get!

ArcheryIf you fancy becoming the next Robin Hood, why not come along and try your hand at archery? Wewill teach you all the skills needed to hit the board every time. You will take part in team games,individual games, scoring games and balloon popping. This course is ideal for beginners.

Arts and crafts NEW!Show your creative side with activities ranging from painting, face painting, colouring and lots ofamazing things to make. We supply all the materials - you provide the imagination.

Be a zoo keeper Have you got what it takes to become a zoo keeper for the day? Working with our zoo keepers atWilliamson Park you will learn how to look after animals, help feed them and get the Butterfly Houseready for opening. Are you brave enough to handle some of our mini-beasts? This will be a greatmorning for anyone interested in animals.

Beach games NEW!Join in the fun on the beach and rediscover the simple pleasures of the seaside. There will be loads offun games and creative sandcastle making, all set within the stunning backdrop of Morecambe Bay.

Beach multi-sports NEW!Join us for an afternoon of fun on Morecambe beach. This session will include a whole host of sportsthat are ideal to be played on sand including beach ‘footy’, volleyball and lots more fun games.

Beacon Fell orienteering adventureExperience the great outdoors with this fun and friendly orienteering session within the boundaries ofBeacon Fell National Park. With the skills you are taught in the morning you’ll be able to tackle theharder course in the afternoon and find your own way around this beautiful woodland park. Can youfind your way around the course and solve all the clues along the way?

Bikeability – the new cycling proficiencyBikeability - cycling proficiency for the 21st Century. This course covers both off and on road training,giving you the skills and confidence to cycle in modern road conditions.

Bug hunting NEW!Explore the woodlands and track down the creepy crawlies. Using our special bug hunting equipment,learn more about the creatures that live in the undergrowth and how they live.

CheerleadingDo you want to get into something totally different and have a great time whilst doing it? Then lookno further, cheerleading could be for you. These classes are fun, encourage team work and cater forall ranges of abilities. Pom dances, stunting and gymnastics are just some of the skills you will learn.If you find that you really enjoyed the session and wish to continue after the summer holidays thenyou can join the Bay Stormers who train weekly at Salt Ayre Sports Centre, so why not give it a try?

Children’s bowls NEW!Bowls is a great sport that’s suitable for all. This session teaches you the basics of the game and letsyou test your new skills in a number of fun games and activities.

Climbing tower and zoo NEW!The outdoor climbing towers at Blackpool offer some of the most challenging and fun climbing in thearea. This session is suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers and you will receive experttuition on how to overcome the slabs, the vertical and overhanging walls. After you’ve scaled thedizzy heights of the climbing towers the adventure continues with a trip to Blackpool Zoo. Please noteyou MUST wear laced up trainers to take part in this activity.

Cricket skills – beginners (soft ball) NEW!Do you have what it takes to become Lancashire’s new cricketing legend? In this session we’ll teachyou the basic skills needed to hit the ball for six and bowl people out. You’ll take part in fun teamgames like Kwik Cricket and Diamond Cricket, learn how to bowl overarm and other key skills such asstriking, catching and throwing. This course is ideal for beginners.

Cricket skills - intermediate (incrediball) NEW!If you already enjoy cricket and want to take your skills to the next level then this course is for you.During this session, our tuition, practice, and fun team games will teach you the skills to make sureyou get the most out of your game. If you know your cover drive from a slog sweep then come alongand join in the fun.

Cycling by the seaside and beach gamesIf you like your activities at a more leisurely pace then this is a great activity for you. After a gentlebike ride along Morecambe promenade from Happy Mount Park to The Battery car park, we thenstop to play some beach games such as rounders, football and volleyball. Make sure you save someenergy for the bike ride back!

Cycling skills (off-road)Let’s explore the rough stuff! This cycling course will be all off-road and you can practice your skillsaway from the tarmac. It is open to children of all abilities and is always a lot of fun.

DodgeballYou’ve seen the movie, now come down to Salt Ayre Sports Centre and try this crazy sport foryourself. This fun session will teach you all the skills you need to take part in a series of Dodgeballgames. This sport will test your co-ordination, movement and balance. So why not come along, learna new sport and have a fantastic time?

Early learner’s trampoliningIf you’re getting bored of doing the same old thing during the holidays, then bounce your way to funwith our popular trampoline session. Trampolining is a great way to learn new skills and keep active,so come along and join in the fun.

Extreme sports – snowboarding / indoor skydiving / climbing / tubing NEW!Calling all adrenaline junkies! If you like sports that test your nerves to the limits then this extremesports session is just for you.

The day begins with an indoor skydive at Airkix (www.airkix.com) where you’ll experience the thrillof skydiving but in a safe, supervised area. After you've landed its time to hit the slopes at ChillFactore with a 1 hour snowboarding lesson on real snow followed by a session on the indoorclimbing wall.

Next it’s back on the snow for a tubing session - big rubber rings that let you slide down the slopesat crazy speeds. Hold on tight or you will end up eating snow! All the activities are supervised byexperienced, qualified coaches and all the equipment is supplied. You just need all the right clothing,a packed lunch and don’t forget your nerves of steel!

FencingCome and learn the noble art of fencing and take your first steps to becoming the next Musketeer:“all for one and one for all”. This introductory session will teach you all the correct techniques you willneed to complete the fencing competition at the end of the session. This course is ideal for beginners.

First aid skills - otters series NEW!This series was created by the 'Swimming Teacher's Association’ and is a basic introduction to first aidthat will teach you the essentials for what to do in an emergency. You will learn how to deal with anumber of accidents such as bleeding or broken bones and placing someone in the recovery position.Learn some essential life skills in this fascinating and informative session.

Gorge walking NEW!Join us for an exciting river adventure. In the safe hands of our expert guide and two instructors,you’ll follow a steep-sided gorge following the course of the river by various ways and means. Thiscan involve sliding or swimming down rapids, floating through fast-flowing chutes and waves,climbing beside waterfalls and jumping off adrenaline-pumping ledges into deep plunge pools. Youwon't believe how much fun gorge walking is until you've tried it! Prepare to get wet! Wet suits andbuoyancy aids are provided.

Hip hop / street danceIf you’ve seen all the dance acts on television and fancied giving it a go, then look no further thanthis high energy taster session. Our qualified instructor will take you through the basics of hip hopand street dance and teach you some moves to make you dance like a pro. If you enjoy this sessionand fancy doing more, why not join our regular classes at Salt Ayre Sports Centre?

Ice skating and Hot Ice show! NEW!You’ve watched ‘Dancing on Ice’, now it’s your turn to find out how easy it is! This very specialcourse is the ultimate day out for anyone interested in ice skating. Your first hour will be spent withone of the coaches who teach the Hot Ice show skaters, and then it’s time to practice your new skillsin a one hour session after lunch.

Once you’re off the ice, it’s time to watch the professionals in the famous Blackpool Arena Hot IceShow. If that isn’t enough your day will end with a goodie bag! Ice skates are provided.

I’m a child… get me out of here!You have seen the TV programme now experience the show for real! Experience bush tucker trialsand all the excitement that comes with it. If you’re up for a challenge and a laugh this is the activityfor you.

Junior wildlife detectives Discover the insects and mini-beasts of Williamson Park and explore the undergrowth to reveal thehabitats in which creatures live. What lurks in the woodland? What creatures only come out at night?Find the answers to these questions and more on this fascinating wildlife detective session.

Junior zoo keepers This unique course provides you with the knowledge and experience of running a small zoo. Learnabout food chains and safe handling as well as fantastic facts about all the animals we care for withour friendly team at Williamson Park.

Karate Karate training consists of punching, kicking and blocking techniques perfected over centuries for selfdefence and physical development. Join us for a typical karate training session involving warm up,basic combinations, partner work, practice of form (kata) and physical exercises such as stretching. Agreat introduction to this ancient martial art.

King swing / KayakingSwing through the trees like Tarzan with our king swing and then try some kayaking on LakeWindermere. This session begins with the famous king swing: a giant swing that swings you throughthe trees at an awesome height and speed. When you catch your breath, it’s time to test yourkayaking skills on Lake Windermere. Learn how to paddle forwards, backwards and round in a circleto take part in a series of exciting kayaking games. The session will be run by the YMCA LakelandCentre’s qualified and experienced instructors.

Learn to cycleThis short course is aimed at children who cannot yet ride or still use stabilisers. Please bring aroadworthy bike which allows the seat to be lowered so that your child can get his/her feet flat onthe ground and suitable clothing for being outdoors.

Learn to swim week Learn to swim this holiday on this exclusive five day course at the swimming pool. This course isideal for non-swimmers who want to gain water confidence and learn basic propulsion and buoyancy.

Marvellous mini beasts Calling all mini beast hunters! Come and explore the amazing mini beasts that live within the groundsof Williamson Park. This session will be followed by a tour of the mini beast area with one of thepark’s zoo keepers.

(mini) Mini Olympics NEW!This session is ideal for any budding athletes of the future and would suit children aged 5 to 8. Takepart in a variety of fun and exciting events to test your speed, jumping, hurdling and throwing ability.All the activities are designed for the younger children so that they will all be able to competetogether.

Mini OlympicsDo you fancy being the next Olympic champion? If so, this could be your first step in achieving a goldmedal in the future. Your all-round athletic skills will be tested during this two hour training session ofaction-packed events including long jump, javelin, shot putt, 100m sprint and relay. This activity isaimed at children aged 9 to 14.

Morecambe FC v Manchester United (includes coaching & ground tour) NEW!This is an amazing opportunity to watch our local team compete against the best team in the country.Join us for a tour of the brand new Globe Arena, the home of Morecambe Football Club and take partin a coaching session on the new outdoor Astro-Turf training pitches. You will be taught byMorecambe FC’s very own fully qualified coaches.

You’ll then spend the evening on the best pitch-side seats to watch the match against ManchesterUnited and not miss a second of the action. If you’re a fan of the Shrimps then this is the course foryou! Children are fully supervised at all times including during the match.

Mountain boarding – surf the turfWelcome to the exciting world of mountain boarding, a thrilling blend of surfing, skateboarding,mountain biking and snowboarding. All equipment is provided for this three hour session where youwill be given expert tuition on the board and plenty of time to practice your new found skills.

Mountain bikingIf you like your mountain biking fast and furious then this is the course for you! This session will takeyou up long steep hills, down narrow winding tracks and through a specially designed mountainbiking trail. This course requires a good level of fitness and motivation to help you complete thecourse. Have you got what it takes?

Mountain biking skillsPedal, jump and hop on down to Williamson Park to learn the techniques needed to tackle thehardest mountain biking routes in the Lake District. Your bike skills will be challenged with some fastdownhill, drastic drop-offs and some berms. After learning the skills you will take part in some funand exciting races.

Multi-sportsA fantastic quick fire session crammed full of your favourite team sports. Taking part in teams, you’llplay a series of different sports and win the opportunity to take part in an exciting competition. Notonly will you make new friends but everyone will have a crazy and exciting time.

Quicksticks hockey NEW!This is the opportunity to learn some new skills and play a fun game of quicksticks hockey. Thisactivity is a whole load of fun and will give you a real taste of this fast and exciting sport.

Racket sportsBadminton, table tennis, short tennis are all featured in this fun and competitive session. You willlearn the basic skills and techniques for all the sports then you will play in a series of competitionsboth knockout and round robin to try and put those skills into practice.

Racing cycling Are you the next Mark Cavendish or Bradley Wiggins? Test out your skills at the Salt Ayre SportsCentre cycling track: the home of Lancashire cycling. You will be taking part in an exciting trainingsession with British Cycling qualified coaches and this will be followed by a series of races. Bike hire isincluded in this session.

RoundersThis is fun for all the family. Learn some basic skills and then take part in a giant game of rounders,not to be missed.

Sailing / aerial runwayFly through the trees on special aerial runways that run high above woodland and a lake. Have yougot what it takes to make it to the end of the course? After a quick lunch on firm land, you’ll learnthe basic skills of sailing dinghy boats on Lake Windermere. As your confidence improves you willhave the opportunity to race other types of boats: just make sure you don’t get wet! The session willbe run by the centre’s qualified and experienced instructors.

Sale Sharks v Edinburgh rugby – coaching and match! NEW!Scrum and join us if you love rugby union; this awesome activity day is as exciting as it sounds! Thefun starts with an action packed non-contact "kicking clinic" with Sale Sharks coaching team and youmay even get the chance to meet a player! This is followed by a live game. Sale Sharks will take onEdinburgh at the Edgley Park Stadium. Witness bone crunching tackles, the power of the scrum andthe grace of a lineout live!

Skiing / tubing / luging - family fun NEW!This exciting NEW session is ideal for children and parents alike. Learn to ski down the dry-ski slope atPendle Ski Club and learn how to turn, race and most importantly stop. After the skiing and a spot oflunch the fun keeps on going with a tubing and luging session, have you got the nerve to go fromthe top of the big slope? This session is lead by the club’s own expert instructors and is ideal forbeginners. Please note that only one adult can attend per child. You must attend this workshop witha parent whatever your age and the parent goes free.

Skiing / tubing / luging NEW!This exciting NEW session has something for everyone who enjoys their winter sports. After amorning coaching and practice session on skiing techniques, the afternoon will focus on tubing andluging. Have great fun as you hurtle down the hill, have you got the nerve to go from the top of thebig slope? This session is lead by the club’s own expert instructors and is ideal for beginners.

Snorkelling NEW!A chance to learn how to use that mask and snorkel you bought on holiday! Learn basic snorkellingtechniques and then practice your new skills in some fun underwater games. If you do not have yourown snorkel you can borrow ours. You must be confident in deep water and be able to tread water.

Snowboarding and luging NEW!Come along to the Chill Factore in Manchester to experience real snow in an indoor environment. Thisunique setting is ideal to learn how to snowboard and this two hour coaching session is speciallydesigned to ensure you will be able to carve up the snow and look cool at the same time! After thesnowboarding, save some energy for the luging activity, this is an indoor toboggan run that really willtest your nerve as you speed down the winding turns whilst being inches from the floor!

South Lakes Wild Animal Park NEW!This activity is for animal lovers who want to see wild animals up close and in their own habitat. Joinour very own guide as we tour the park and discover wild animals like you’ve never seen thembefore. You’ll get the chance to ask any questions as well as having a go at feeding the giraffes,lemurs and penguins for yourself. This will truly be a day to remember!

Super snakes and creepy crawlies NEW!Have you got what it takes to come face to face with our super snakes and creepy crawlies? This onehour session offers the brave-hearted the chance to feed and handle our snakes, spiders and mini-beasts and find out more about the animals living in the mini-beast house.

Survival adventure day NEW!Are you the next Bear Grylls? Join our day long expedition into the wilderness of Warton Crag andexplore the beauty of this barren countryside. On our great adventure you will learn how to buildshelters, cook in the wild and take part in a treasure hunt. You will also learn the skills to make abow and arrow and a Red Indian throwing stick.

Survival skillsCalling all adventurers! Learn how to survive in the wild with this introduction to survival skills. Thissession will teach you the basics of survival: what to take on an expedition, how to build bivouac shelters,campfires and cook in the wild.

Table tennis NEW!Table tennis is one of the fastest sports in the world. If you want to learn about this superb game orimprove the skills you already have then this is an ideal course for you. Coaching is from a fullyqualified and experienced coach who will teach you everything from serving, forehand, backhand,topspin and slice.

Tae Kwon-Do NEW!A beginners introduction to the martial art Tae Kwon-Do. This session will teach you all aspects of thismartial art including kicking and punching and give you a real taste of this Korean form of selfdefence. If you've ever wondered what this popular Olympic sport is about, then this session is idealfor you.

Tennis NEW!Anyone for tennis? Ideal for beginners, this session introduces you to the basics of the sport includingforehand, backhand and volleying. The session will conclude with a small competition to give you thechance to put your new skills to the test. Could you be the next Wimbledon champion?

Treasure hunt NEW!Can you solve the clues, put together the puzzle and discover where the treasure is hidden? If socome on down to Williamson Park and take part in this fun and exciting treasure hunt.

Velodrome track cycling - ManchesterAre you the next Chris Hoy or Bradley Wiggins? Test out your skills at the Manchester Velodrome; thehome of British Cycling. You will be taking part in an action packed, exciting training session withBritish Cycling qualified coaches. This will be followed by a tour of the Velodrome Britain’s NationalCycling Centre. After a spot of lunch you’ll have the chance to watch the members of the Great BritishCycling team train on the Velodrome. You won’t believe the speed these cyclists go: you have to seeit to believe it!

Wet and dry dayA totally brilliant day not to be missed at Salt Ayre Sports Centre. Starting with a brief introductionabout the day’s activities, it’s off to the pool for our famous fun and floats session until lunchtime.Please note that lunch is not provided but you can take advantage of the excellent menu at the FreshAyre Café. After lunch it’s off into the main sports hall for an afternoon of sporting fun and mayhem.Included in this action packed afternoon will be football, dodgeball and Danish long ball. All in all, agreat day of fun.

Wildlife adventure trail NEW!Do you know what animals live all around us and how to spot where they live? Let’s track themtogether and find out more about the wildlife living in our neighbourhoods. This adventurous trail willbe perfect for animal lovers or anyone interested in wildlife.
