Summer 2012 ProgrammeWelcome to our bumper edition of activities for the 2012 summerholidays! This year we've over 160 exciting activities on offer to keepyou busy over the six weeks.

This summer we've teamed up with the Lancashire Children and Young People's Trust togive you an even bigger selection of great activities and some are even free.

There’s no better way to spend your time than dashing outdoors and taking part in one ofour exciting activities on offer. Whatever you decide to try this holiday, you’re sure to havelots of fun, make new friends and have a truly memorable experience.

Lancaster District's Children and Young People's Trust

(LDCYPT) is one of 12 district boards that contributes to

the overarching Lancashire-wide Children's Trust Board.

It brings together all the various services that work to improve

the lives of children and young people in the district. We work

together to improve the lives of children and young people

across the district.

One of the key priorities for the LDCYPT has been supporting

the planning, co-ordination and delivery of a wide range of

activities for children and young people of all ages and

abilities, during the long summer holidays.

All the information about the activities is included in this

supplement so why not try something new this summer?

There should be something to suit everyone's interests and

pocket!

How to use this guide The details for all of our holiday activities can be found in this brochure, listed in both A to Z format and in a day by dayformat. The back page also has an ‘at a glance’ section that lists all the activities in date order.

Please note that each workshop has different requirements e.g. age, specific clothing, venues vary and transport issometimes provided. Please see each workshop individually. Please also note that due to some workshops being outdoors theyare weather dependant and can be cancelled on the day. If you are concerned on the day if a particular activity is running ornot, please contact Salt Ayre Sports Centre for confirmation.

Activities for under 8 year oldsThroughout our brochure you will find an increased number of workshops for 4 to 7 year olds.

PLEASE NOTE: A responsible adult must stay on site during any workshop for children under 8 years old. Parents are expectedto take part with their child in some workshops

Booking InformationBookings can be taken in person, by post and by phone from Monday 2 July.

1. To book and pay in personBookings with cash and card payments can be made in person by visiting Salt Ayre Sports

Centre between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday, or between 8am and 6pm Saturday and

Sunday. Be sure to have a fully completed booking form for each applicant and your payment.

2. To book and pay by post (no cash, cheques only)

1. Cheques are the only means of payment when applying by post.

2. Firstly, fully complete a booking form (you will find two forms at the centre pages of

this booklet). Use only one form per person.

3. Calculate the cost of the activities booked.

4. Across your cheque, write in words “An amount not to exceed £...”

5. Make the cheque payable to Lancaster City Council and sign the cheque. We will write in the

final amount and send you your receipt.

6. Make sure you have signed and dated the declaration.

This system reduces the number of cheques that may have to be returned to customers, due to

the unavailability of some activities when booking. For example:

3 activities at £6 each = £18

Only two activities available, amount due = £12

Complete the process by placing your cheque(s) and booking form(s) in an envelope and send

and Information Line on 01524 842493 – Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm or 01524 847540 –

Monday to Friday, 7am to 8pm and weekends 8am to 6pm. Our friendly staff will guide you

through the booking process. Please have the following details at hand:

• Applicant(s) name and date of birth

• Address and post code

• Your credit / debit card details

All applicants for the Holiday Activity Programme will require a parent or guardian declaration.

This will be done during your booking.

Additional InformationActivity information - We strongly advise that all participants wear suitable clothing for the

activity that they are due to take part in. Information about suitable clothing or requirements

for each session can be found on page 18 onwards.

Disabled access - Where possible, we use premises which are fully accessible. If you would like

more information, please do not hesitate to contact the holiday activity team on 01524 582825.

The programme is correct at the time of going to print. However, the organisers reserve the right to make changes. Participationin all the activities is entirely at the participant’s own risk. Lancaster City Council regrets that under no circumstances can refundsbe given, unless the council cancels the activity due to minimum numbers or any unforeseen circumstances.

Aerial Extreme Knowsley – adventure ropes course and Safari ParkExperience the exciting and exhilarating high adrenaline adventure ropes course with the new stateof the art safety system that never requires you to clip and unclip from your safety line. You really doneed a head for heights to do this activity, with the fun packed obstacles such as islands in the skyand the wobbly do the splits logs – unique to Aerial Extreme. Please note that children MUST be over1.1m in height to take part in this activity. Once we have completed the ropes course it’s back on thebus to go into the Safari Park and experience the animals in their open environment. This is as closeto seeing animals in the wild as you will get!

Aerial Extreme Knowsley family fun – adventure ropes course and Safari Park NEW!As above, but this time the whole family can join in. Please note there’s a maximum of two adultsper child and a maximum of two children per adult for this activity. You must attend this workshopwith an adult whatever your age and the adult has to pay.

Aerial Extreme Manchester – adventure ropes course and 36 hole indoor mini golf NEW!Experience the exciting and exhilarating high adrenaline adventure ropes course with the new stateof the art safety system that never requires you to clip and unclip from your safety line. You really doneed a head for heights to do this activity, with the fun packed obstacles such as islands in the sky,wobbly ‘do-the-splits’ logs and two high-flying zip wires. Please note that children MUST be over1.4m in height to take part in this activity. Once we have completed the ropes course it’s into theTrafford Centre to take part in the amazing 36 hole indoor Paradise Island Adventure golf course.Come along a see if you can get a hole in one.

ArcheryIf you fancy becoming the next Robin Hood, why not come along and try your hand at archery? Wewill teach you all the skills needed to hit the board every time. You will take part in team games,individual games, scoring games and balloon popping. This course is ideal for beginners. Don’t forget,if you enjoy archery we run regular 8 week courses at Salt Ayre Sports Centre.

Back crawl for improversThis one hour coach-led activity at Hornby Pool includes stroke technique, a fun practice session andloads of handy hints.

Badge swimThis is a great opportunity to test your swimming and get rewarded for your effort. You can swim upto 5,000 metres in this session at Heysham Pool. How far will you get? A badge and certificate areincluded in the price.

BadmintonCome along to this exciting outdoor badminton session and experience this Olympic sport for yourself.Learn some new skills whilst having a great time.

Ball games in the poolBring the family to our fun and exciting ball games session in the pool. Have a go at playingvolleyball, water polo, basketball and lots more. All games take place in shallow water.

Basketball NEW!This brand new session will have you flying through the air. Learn new skills and shoot some hoops.You will also take part in some small sided basketball games.

Be a zoo keeper Have you got what it takes to become a zoo keeper for the day? Working with our zoo keepers atWilliamson Park you will learn how to look after animals, help feed them and get the Butterfly Houseready for opening. Are you brave enough to handle some of our mini-beasts? This will be a greatmorning for anyone interested in animals.

Beach cricketNothing says summer than cricket on the beach. Learn some basic cricket skills and play lots of fungames on the sands of Morecambe Bay.

Beach footballThe beach is a great place to have fun and this activity is perfect for anyone who’s ‘footy mad’. Joinus on the sand to learn some new skills, play some matches and take part in a fun tournament.

Beach volleyball NEW!This exciting new session will teach you how to serve, practice some basic shots and play a smallsided game. This fun session is not to be missed.

Beacon Fell orienteering adventureExperience the great outdoors with this fun and friendly orienteering session within the boundaries ofBeacon Fell National Park. With the skills you are taught in the morning you’ll be able to tackle theharder course in the afternoon and find your own way around this beautiful woodland park.

Bird identification NEW!Explore the woodlands, identify birds using spotter sheets and see where they live and what theyeat. A great new session for anyone interested in wildlife.

“Blue, Green, Yellow, Dead” – Live action zombie gameIt's dark, claustrophobic - you have a mission - to find three vials - Blue... Green...Yellow... If you don'tyou could end up DEAD! You’re armed with a high quality paintball gun... there are trapdoors,confined spaces and dead ends and then there are the zombies... time is short... can you succeed?Will you survive? Please note that the paintball guns are only used to shoot zombies (not each other).You must be of a reasonable level of fitness to participate in this activity.

BMX biking – Indoor BMX Centre, Manchester NEW!If you have the need for speed then this is the activity for you. BMX biking is an action packed Olympiccycling sport for all ages and abilities. This specially designed track is the first ever permanent indoorBMX track in the UK and the same one the GB Olympic team train on. After a morning of coachingthere will be a quick break for lunch before going back on to the track to put your new found skills tothe test in some timed races. Will you have the nerve to go from the top of the 2 start ramps, whichare 5m & 8m high! All the safety equipment is provided including a BMX bike.

Bug house decorating NEW!Decorate your very own bug house using bundles of materials and explore the woodlands for naturalmaterials to make your bug feel at home.

Bug hunt Discover the insects and mini-beasts of Williamson Park and explore the undergrowth to reveal thehabitats in which creatures live. What lurks in the woodland? What creatures only come out at night?Find the answers to these questions and more on this fascinating bug hunting session. This sessionincludes a special preview visit to the famous Butterfly House.

Clay facesExplore your surroundings and create master pieces out of natural resources. We will provide the clay- you provide the imagination.

Craft and swimJoin us for three hours of arts and crafts followed by one hour of fun in the pool. Make your ownjewellery, greetings cards, bookmarks and many more. We supply all the materials, you provide theimagination.

Crown green bowling bonanzaBowls is a great sport that's suitable for all. The session teaches you the basics of the game and testsyour new skills in a number of fun games and activities.

Cycle games If you know how to cycle, then why not try the challenge of playing games whilst riding your bike? Enjoycompeting in pairs or in teams with activities such as the slalom and cone-heads to name but a few.Challenge yourself to do the balance box and many more exciting games in this fun and active session.

Decathlon bug hunt FREE and NEW!Are you an Olympic bug hunting champion? Come along and see if you can find 10 different speciesof bug in this fantastic opportunity to explore the woodlands and discover creepy crawlies by usingour very special bug hunting equipment.

Den building FREEExperience making your own den using natural resources and create a masterpiece den with yourfriends.

Diving SchoolLearn how to dive with our fully qualified swimming teacher. Learn how to perform sitting, standingdives, dive through hoops and dive down to the bottom of the deep end for treasure. All participantsmust be competent swimming in deep water.

DodgeballYou've seen the movie now come and try it for yourself. Not only will you learn and practice the skillsrequired, but this fun and crazy session will allow you to put those skills into a proper dodgeballgame. So try something a little different and have a really great time.

Dodgeball fun games FREECome along to this fun and crazy session. If you like things fast and furious then this is the session foryou. Learn some new skills, play lots of fun games and take part in an exciting game of dodgeball.

Extreme sports – indoor skydiving / snowboarding / climbing / lugingCalling all you adrenaline junkies! Test your nerves with two indoor skydives at Airkix (airkix.com)where you'll experience the thrill of skydiving indoors.* After you've landed, it's time to hit the slopesat Chill Factore with an hour of snowboarding lessons, a climbing wall experience and finally a returnto the slopes with a fun luging session. All the activities are supervised by experienced, qualifiedcoaches and all the equipment is supplied. This activity would normally cost you £94, however wecan offer it to you for the bargain price of only £35.*To take your skydiving experience to the max, why not dare to try the high-flyer challenge using a 30ft high chamber? If you areup for it, this experience will cost an extra £5 per person on the day.

Family snow fun NEW!Bring your family for an exhilarating day on the snow. We start the day with airboarding where youtravel head first down the real snow slopes on an inflatable board using your knees and body tosteer. With your head only inches from the snow this is truly an amazing experience. After lunch, wecontinue the excitement with a session on the luge where you’ll hurtle down the specially designedtrack feet first reaching incredible speeds. FencingCome and learn the noble art of fencing and take your first steps to becoming the next Musketeer“all for one and one for all”. This introductory session will teach you all the correct techniques you willneed to complete the fencing competition at the end of the session. This course is ideal for beginners.

Fire building FREEExperience the thrill of building safe fires, toast marshmallows and explore your surroundings.

Fishing NEW!If you like your sports a little more relaxed then it doesn’t come any better than this. You’ll besupervised by a fully qualified and experienced fishing coach throughout the day and provided withall the equipment. All you need to bring is a keen eye to land that 40lb fish. Foam javelin challenge FREECan you throw javelins as well as Jessica Ennis? Learn the basic technique of javelin throwing and tryout your skills with our new foam javelins. How far can you throw them?

Football frenzy FREEThis session is a great way to learn some new football skills, play some matches and take part in afun tournament. A perfect activity for anyone who's 'footy' mad!

Front crawl for improversIf you need to improve your front crawl then this workshop is for you. This one hour coach-led sessionat Hornby Pool includes stroke technique, a practice and loads of handy hints.

Go karting NEW!If you like your sports fast and furious they don’t come much better than this. After a safety briefingby the professional instructors you will get fully kitted out and on to the track. Being inches from theground you will really get the feeling of speed as you fly into the bends, drive over the bridge andinto the chicane. After a break for lunch we go back out on to the track to test your skills on adifferent track. Once all the racing has finished and you have caught your breath there will be apresentation to all the drivers with certificates with their lap times on and medals for the bestdrivers. This is a special introductory price so it is recommended you book your place quickly or youwill be disappointed.

Golf coaching academy NEW!This is a great opportunity for any golfers out there who really want to improve their game. Whetheryou are new to the game or you have been playing a while, this golf coaching academy activity willcover all aspects of the game from full shots, pitching, chipping, and putting. The golf coachingprofessionals will take you through everything you need to know to help improve your game whilsttaking advantage of being on one of the best golf courses in the area.

Goofy golf FREECome along and join in this fun session. Practice putting and chipping some golf balls into targets andwin as many points as you can. Will you be crowned the Goofy golf champion of the park?

Handball FREETry your hand at this exciting Olympic sport. After learning the skills needed for this fast paced game,take part in your very own handball match in Happy Mount Park.

Ice skating and Hot Ice ShowYou’ve watched Dancing on Ice now it’s your turn to find out how easy it is! This very special course isthe ultimate day out for anyone interested in ice skating. Your first hour will be spent with one of thecoaches who teach the Hot Ice show skaters. The coach will give you all the basic skills you will needto help you stay on your skates. After lunch we then have one hour of free skating to put your newfound skills in to practise. Once you have done all the skating you get to watch the professionals inthe famous Blackpool Arena Hot Ice Show.

Indoor climbing NEW!Come and try the new indoor climbing wall at the newly built Lancaster University sports centre. Thissession is suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers. You will receive expert tuition on howto overcome the slabs, the vertical and overhanging walls. Please note you MUST wear laced uptrainers to take part in this activity.

I’m a child… get me out of here!You have seen the TV programme now experience the show for real! Experience bush tucker trialsand all the excitement that comes with it. If you’re up for a challenge and a laugh this is the activityfor you.

It’s a knock out – family funCrazy fun for the whole family in Hornby Pool. Using a selection of floats and games, you can takepart in a number of great activities and team games. Adults pay and the kids go free.

Junior Olympics NEW!Do you fancy being the next Olympic champion? If so this could be your first step in achieving a goldmedal in the future. Your all-round athletic skills will be tested during this two hours of action-packedevents including long jump, javelin, shot putt, sprint and relay.

Kayaking family fun NEW!You have seen it in the London Olympics now come and try it on our local river. The fully qualifiedcoaches from Lancaster and District Canoe Club will provide the instruction. This will include variousstrokes followed by a short journey and finishing with some games. This activity is ideal for beginnersor those with only a little experience. All kayaking equipment will be provided. Please note there’s amaximum of two adults per child and a maximum of two children per adult for this activity. You mustattend this workshop with an adult whatever your age and the adult has to pay.

Kayaking / King SwingSwing through the trees like Tarzan on our king swing and then try some kayaking on LakeWindermere. This session begins with the famous king swing: a giant swing that swings you throughthe trees at an awesome height and speed. When you catch your breath, it's time to test yourkayaking skills on Lake Windermere. Learn how to paddle, turn and get great speed through a seriesof fun games like kayak surfing. The session will be run by the YMCA Lakeland Centre's qualified andexperienced instructors.

Learn to cycleThis short course is aimed at children who cannot yet ride or still use stabilisers. Please bring aroadworthy bike which allows the seat to be lowered so that your child can get his/her feet flat onthe ground and suitable clothing for being outdoors.

Learn to swim week – beginnersLearn to swim on this exclusive five day course at Hornby Swimming Pool. This course is ideal fornon-swimmers who want to gain water confidence and learn basic propulsion and buoyancy. Thiscourse could be the gateway to your Olympic dreams.

Learn to swim week – deep water confidenceA week-long intensive course of lessons for children who can swim over 5 metres on their front and back.These classes are for children who are not confident swimming out of their depth without armbands.

Learn to swim week – non swimmersLearn to swim on this exclusive five day course at Hornby Swimming Pool. This course is ideal fornon-swimmers who want to gain water confidence and learn basic propulsion and buoyancy. Thiscourse could be the gateway to your Olympic dreams.

Manchester United football coaching NEW!If you’re a football crazy red devil then this is your chance to train at Manchester United’s trainingground, The Cliff. During this full day of coaching you’ll train on the massive 3G indoor trainingground. The fully qualified Manchester United coaches will take you through many different aspectsof the game from shooting, passing, heading and dribbling. Save some energy for the small sidedgames and show off your Wayne Rooney finishing or Ryan Giggs dribbling. At the end of the dayyou’ll be presented with a certificate and a Manchester United gift to make the day even morememorable.

Mini OlympicsStart your Olympic training this summer and take your first steps to achieving a future gold medal.This one and a half hour activity is a great introduction to athletics and will include popular eventssuch as long jump, javelin, shot putt, sprint and relay.

Mini tennis coaching This action packed session is a fun way for anyone aged between 4 and 7 years to learn the basicskills of tennis. Mini tennis has been designed to allow young players to develop at a speed that suitsthem. All sessions will be delivered by a professional tennis coach.

Morecambe FC (includes match, coaching and ground tour) This is an amazing opportunity to watch our local team take on Bolton Wanderers or Preston NorthEnd. Join us for a tour of the Globe Arena and then receive a coaching session from Morecambe FC'sown coaches. Finish the day by watching the exciting match and really feel part of the action.Children are fully supervised at all times including during the match.

Mountain bikingHold on tight for the exciting Olympic sport of mountain biking. This session will take you up longsteep hills, down narrow winding tracks and through a specially designed mountain biking trail. Thiscourse requires a good level of fitness and motivation to help you complete the course.

Multisports An action packed two hour session featuring all your favourite sports. Football, Danish long ball anddodgeball are just some of the sports featured in this action packed session. A great session foranyone who loves team sports.

Nature in art FREE and NEW!In this session you’ll explore your surroundings and create masterpieces out of natural resources.You’ll have the opportunity to design your very own art piece and working together as a team createa massive natural artwork.

Olympic party in the park NEW!Fancy something a little bit different this summer? Then get yourselves down to Williamson Park forsome wacky Olympic-themed races and some very silly games. Parents must stay for the duration ofthis activity and will be encouraged to join in the fun. Please bring a picnic as we will be having a 30minute break for some lunch. Prizes are also given out to the best wacky winners.

Olympic T-shirt graphic designShow off your artistic side and design your own 2012 Olympic themed t-shirt using a bundle ofmaterials. You can take home anything you make in the session.

Parachute fun FREEJoin in the fun with a number of games under our huge multi-coloured parachute. This activity is idealfor younger children.

Puppet making FREEShow your creative side and make some amazing colourful animal puppets. We supply all thematerials - you provide the imagination.

Quicksticks hockey FREELearn some new skills and play a fun game of Quicksticks. This activity is a whole load of fun and willgive you a real taste of the fast and exciting sport of hockey.

Racket sportsBadminton, table tennis and short tennis are all included in this jam-packed session. After learningkey skills in each of these sports, you can try them out in a number of games where prizes will be upfor grabs.

Raft building / aerial runway NEW!Fly through the trees on a special aerial runway that runs high above the woodland and a lake. Haveyou got what it takes to make it to the end of the course? After a quick lunch on firm land, you’lllearn how to build a raft and then test your building skills by taking your raft out on to LakeWindermere, sink or float either way you will have a great time!

Rookie lifeguard NEW!Learn some key lifesaving skills whilst having fun and keeping fit. This special session at HeyshamSwimming Pool is the perfect training ground for the lifeguards of the future. You’ll learn lifesavingskills, basic first aid and procedures which one day could save someone's life.

Rounders FREEYou will learn the basic skills needed to play a fun game of rounder’s. This session will teach you howto bowl under arm and other skills such as throwing and catching.

Rowing NEW!If you fancy becoming our next Olympic rowing champion then this is a great way to start. Learnall about the best rowing techniques and the teamwork you’ll need whilst having a great time onthe water.

Sandcastle sculpting FREE and NEW!Come and create a master piece. Make an individual castle or create your own sand art. You willalso get the opportunity to make a huge sand sculpture. All buckets and spades will be provided.

Skiing for beginners / tubing / luging - family funThis exciting session is ideal for children and parents alike. Learn to ski down the dry-ski slope atPendle Ski Club and learn how to turn, race and most importantly stop. After the skiing and a spotof lunch the fun keeps on going with a tubing and luging session. This session is lead by theclub’s own expert instructors and is ideal for beginners. Please note there’s a maximum of twoadults per child and a maximum of two children per adult for this activity. You must attend thisworkshop with an adult whatever your age and the adult has to pay.

Skiing for beginners / tubing / luging A great session for anyone wanting to try out their skills on the slopes for the first time. Wet and dry dayA totally brilliant day not to be missed at Salt Ayre Sports Centre. Starting with a brief introductionabout the day's activities, it's off to the pool for our famous fun and floats session until lunchtime.Please note that lunch is not provided but you can take advantage of the excellent menu at theFresh Ayre Cafe. After lunch it's off to the main sports hall for an afternoon of sporting fun andmayhem. Included in this action packed afternoon will be dodgeball, football and Danish long ball.

Wildlife adventure dayJoin us on our Wildlife Adventure day at Williamson Park. The day is split into two sessions withlunch included. In the morning you will become a Zoo Keeper. Working with our Zoo Keepers atWilliamson Park you will learn how to look after animals, help feed them, look after our ButterflyHouse and go behind the scenes of what we do at Williamson Park. There will also be theopportunity to handle some of our mini beasts such as our snakes. After lunch you will be takenout into the park on an insect safari. In which you will explore the woodlands and track downcreepy crawlies. Using our special bug hunting equipment, you will learn more about the creaturesthat live in the undergrowth and how they live.
