From The Headteacher...Early into the new term we were very sad to learn of the death of Mrs Lilas Baker. Mrs Baker had taught generations of families since her arrival at Mills Grammar School in 1976. She was an exceptional teacher and retired from Thomas Mills as Senior Tutor last year. We are all very sad that she did not live longer to enjoy her years of retirement. However, her inspiration will mean that her life’s work lives on. Mrs Baker organised the school’s annual French Exchange for many years and our extra-curricular programme and school trips are still a very important part of life at Thomas Mills. In July, our busy Activities Week enabled pupils to participate in a range of opportunities from sailing in the Lake District to work experience. I was able to join the well-established Holland trip with Year Seven and a number of staff led by Mr Jeffery and Miss Lambert. In August, we were all delighted that our pupils excelled in their public Philip Hurst
examinations and it was a privilege to be able to share their success at both GCSE and A Level. I congratulate them all. We will have a chance to celebrate this success and many others at our Awards Evening in December. I am delighted that Dr Tim Coulson, the new Regional Commissioner for Education, has accepted my invitation to be our Guest of Honour.Such success only arrives through hard work and I am always pleased to see pupils engaging well with their learning and working well with their teachers. Our ‘Charter of Values’ underpins our high expectations and provides much inspiration for all of life’s adventures and challenges.
From the Archives‘First Dayers’ – Photograph (taken at a Reunion at Cransford Hall – the boarding house of the Grammar School – on September 9th 1961) of four ladies who were pupils on the opening day of Mills Grammar School in 1902.From left: Mrs Hilda Cooper (née Self); Mrs Lottie Lanman (née Mallows); Miss Florence Pechy; Mrs Margaret Simper (née Rose) Miss Pechy became a teacher at the school in 1904 and retired in 1947!!
Lilas BakerSoon after I first met Lilas, I realised that she was rather special. In over 40 years of married life there appeared to be no limits to her abilities. She created a beautiful, comfortable home. She was a brilliant cook. She supported and cared for me in every possible way. In her spare time she became a very successful teacher. This was all possible because of her capacity for thought, planning, sheer hard
work and the occasional flash of stubbornness. For all of this I loved, respected and admired her. I thought she was my little secret.
It wasn’t until after her retirement and particularly since her death that I really realised just how many other people appreciated her, and how many lives she influenced.
For the help and support you have given us – Thank you.

YEAR 11 CELEBRATE IN STYLE
Music Tour to Belgium
In July the members of the Senior Choir, First Orchestra, Chamber Choir and Brass Quintet travelled to Belgium for a Music Tour. The action-‐packed few days saw many moving, exhilarating, interesting and exhausting moments. The first concert of the tour was in St. Salvator’s Cathedral in Bruges. Here the excellent acoustics were enjoyed by all the musicians, particularly Katie Payn and Rachel Routledge, who performed a beautiful duet from Handel’s Dixit Dominus. At the end of the concert the school musicians were rewarded with a standing ovation from an appreciative audience. An outdoor concert in Ypres was very well received by another large audience. But the musical highlight was the Senior Choir and 1st Orchestra’s performance at the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony. Huge crowds of people were gathered for this most moving of events and as the various wreaths were laid the Senior Choir sang the spiritual ’Steal Away’ in an arrangement by Sir Michael Tippet. At the end of the ceremony the School Orchestra played the National Anthem with the huge crowd joining in. This was a most profound and special expereince for our youngsters who acquitted themselves superbly. Trips to a chocolate museum, bowling, visits to the beach and the Flanders Fields Museum were also undertaken with the tour ending with a day spent in a theme park! On the final evening staff and students gave Miss Scott a rousing and emotional send off with Emile Burgoyne’s specially written rap catching the mood of the occasion very well.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Update
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Update
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Thomas Mills has been going from strength to strength in recent years with a record number of participants undertaking their Bronze and Silver Awards. Our annual presentation evening in October provided an opportunity to say thank you to the huge number of staff, parents and governors that have made this such a successful year, as well as to congratulate successful pupils. Our invited guest was Natasha Mealing, a former pupil, who now works in the Outdoor Education Industry, as Senior Instructor at Thorpe Woodlands Activity Centre. Our thanks go to everyone who has been involved with the expeditions and in running after school sessions, and also to those of you: parents, coaches, teachers… who have been assessors for the other three sections (skills, volunteering and physical). We really value the time that you have given to helping our pupils achieve their Award. We are now looking forward to enrolling next year’s young people and to another successful year in 2015. Jo Middleton and Phil Bubb, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Co-‐ordinators
Scientific Research Project Over four weeks this summer I was fortunate enough to be able to conduct a Nuffield Research Placement Project through STEM East. The title of my project was ‘The Efficacy of Whole Body Computer Game Exercise for Promoting Metabolic, Cardiovascular and Musculoskeletal Health.’ In more simple terms, I tested Xbox Kinect activities to see if they have any health benefits. In order to do this, the work was carried out at UCS in Ipswich. I compared the efficiency of the computer game activity to brisk walking on a treadmill by using Metalyzer (a cardiopulmonary exercise testing system), heart rate monitors and ground reaction force platforms on real study participants. The aim was to discover whether or not computer game exercise could be prescribed as a form of moderately intense physical activity. The results proved that the X-‐box was just as efficient, if not better than brisk walking in terms of physical intensity and long term health benefits. I have written a research paper on my study as well as designing a scientific poster which I shall present at the project awards ceremony at Anglian Ruskin University later this year. I have discovered so much about the world of research science from this experience and I truly had a wonderful time. Shuling Appleby, Year 13

YEAR 7 CHURCH TRIP
Year 7 Church Trip
In early September t Year 7 pupils undertook a visit to St Michael’s Church in Framlingham. This was not only a great opportunity to look around the amazing building but also a chance to understand the different parts of the church and to
consider why it is so important to Christians. While in Framingham, the pupils also completed some Geography field work. This tested and developed their map reading skills. Although some local knowledge was very helpful!

In the summer term, Thomas Mills held two separate enrichment days, titled “Escape from the Moon,” in which Year 5 pupils from all our feeder primary schools attended a day of creative subject workshops. Pupils from Sir Robert Hitcham, Charsfield, Dennington, Earl Soham, Easton and Wickham Market attended sessions in DT, PE and Science, working in small teams with their “mission brief” being to rescue their class which had crash-landed on the Moon. Pupils built model space rockets with Mr Thompson in DT, experimented with “Moon Acid” and propulsion systems with Miss Crisp and Mr Kidby in Science, and undertook a range of team-building challenges with Mr Bubb in PE. Pupils and teachers alike all had a really enjoyable time and we hope to see some familiar faces returning to Thomas Mills for future events.

Art Exhibition You will have all seen the stunning Art work on display in the canteen. It demonstrates the enormous talent of our students. What I am particularly proud of is the variety of styles and technique shown. At A2, students make a sustained personal study about an aspect of Art in which they are interested, often meeting and interviewing local artists as their starting point. This impacts significantly on their own artwork, and the work in the canteen is the end result of their study. Representatives from the National Association of Decorative and Fine Art came to our exhibition in June, and selected two of our students, Isaac Watson and Louisa Tile for an award -‐ a cash prize of £50 each, and the chance to have their work exhibited nationally. Thomas Mills High School has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in education. Year after year pupils and students achieve excellent results in examinations at both GCSE and GCE A Level. These results regularly place Thomas Mills High School as one of the highest performing non-selective, state schools in the county – both in terms of attainment and the progress that young people make.
The tradition of outstanding achievement is engrained in the ethos of the school as can clearly be seen in our Vision Statement:
“We, the staff and governors, aspire to ensure that all our students, irrespective of ability and regardless of anyone’s doubts, achieve their potential in full; and we aspire in this way to make Thomas Mills High School the best in the country”
Our pupils’ GCSE achievements over the years have been exceptional. The percentage of pupils achieving five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and Mathematics has always been impressive. In 2014 it was 73% (in 2013, with different examination rules and regulations it was a staggering 83%). This groups Thomas Mills with the highest achieving schools in the country. Attainment in the three core GCSE subjects of English, Mathematics and Science is also remarkable – again making Thomas Mills High School not just one of the best performing schools in the county – but the country. Attainment in many other GCSE subjects is also significantly higher than in other schools nationally.
The progress of young people at Thomas Mills is also always outstanding and significantly above the national figures. In 2014, 88% of pupils made the expected progress in English and 79% in Mathematics. This impressive progress is also seen in those pupils that are considered ‘disadvantaged’. For example, in 2013 95% of pupils so identified made the expected progress in English.
The impressive results at GCSE enable our pupils to progress confidently to the next stage of their education. Attainment at A Level by cohorts of students with a broader achievement range than that found in many other schools is excellent. Students fulfil their potential. In the last three years 13 Oxbridge places have been achieved and six medical school places. Over 40% of University places achieved are Russell Group or 1994 Group Universities. Additionally, some 80% of students proceed to higher education every year at Universities throughout the United Kingdom and overseas. Equally, students are successful in obtaining A Level employment and training opportunities in a wide range of employment sectors; for example, Accountancy, Science, Energy and the Armed Forces.

The Annual School Sports Day was held on 15th July in perfect weather conditions. A full programme of field events in the morning saw a large number of pupils taking part in high jump, triple jump, discus, javelin and shot. In the afternoon the track events provided a real feast of competitive sport for the spectators to watch. The number of pupils participating in the Open Mile was inspirational. Prizes were awarded by former student Josh Webster, now a member of Porsche Carrera. Josh arrived in his Porsche and kindly took Mr Harding for a spin in it after Sports Day!

It was a fantastic sight to see so many boats out on the water. We had a total of 10 pupils from years 9 to 11 taking part this year. There were some shifty winds, but they all did well and completed the four races. Eight of our pupils competed in the main regatta, all in the slow handicap fleet. There were some great performances from the team. Their results are as follows:Slow HandicapKatie Spark/Tabitha Day – 4th placePip Dearlove/Phoebe Friston – 5th placeAsher Parkinson /Jordan Samuels – 11th placeCallum Palmier-Robertson/Charlie Wells – 16th placeTwo of our pupils took part in the ‘Onboard Regatta’, which is designed for more novice sailors. They were: Hattie Elson and Annie Smith. The girls had a thoroughly enjoyable time, as did the whole team.Thank you to Mr Halls who accompanied me and helped supervise the team on the day. A great day – looking forward to next year’s regatta already!
