IT IS GOING TO BE A 10” X 10” SUMMER! Our 10” x 10” summer is a first-time ever for Saratoga Arts! As a part of their portfolios for the week, all campers (participating in weeks 1-5) will be producing a 10” x 10”

painting which will hang as part of our 10” x 10” = 100 exhibition (a show developed as a part of the Saratoga Springs Centennial Celebration) in our main gallery for the months of August and September. We don’t want to leave our week 6-9 artists out, though! All of our artists participating in weeks 6-9 will have their 10” x 10” painting added to the show at the end of their week. All of our artists are also invited to a reception on Saturday, August 1 from 6pm - 8pm where

they can show their work to family and friends.

What will my child be doing each week? Good question! Every week, children participating in Saratoga Arts’ Summer Fine Arts Camps will be drawing, painting and sculpting with a variety of fine art media including charcoal, pastel, oil pastel, watercolors, acrylic paints, paper mache, wire, etc... The themes we designate for each week are just a sample of the types of art children will be learning about. Children participating in The Arts Center Children’s

Theater Camp will be learning about a variety art forms required to bring a play to life. Lessons about character development, stage directions and set, sound and costume design are taught using theater games and play. Each

session of our theater camp program ends with a performance in our Dee Sarno Theater.

TEEN ARTS

Saratoga Arts offers a unique summer camp experience for children who love to learn about and create art. What makes our Summer Camp unique is our informal "no-crayon or popsicle stick" policy.  Of course, we would make an exception if children were melting crayons to make Medieval-inspired seals or using popsicle sticks to create their own Sol LeWitt sculptures! Taught by a faculty with over three decades of teaching experience, we strive to provide a safe, comfortable arts-learning environment where our campers can truly enjoy art and the art-making process. Located at the corner of Broadway and Spring Street in downtown Saratoga Springs, The Arts Center is situated in historic Congress Park.  Whenever we are able (weather permitting of course) we use the park for inspiration for paintings, drawing and sculpture; we even often enjoy lunch and/or snack times in the park.

THEATER ARTS PROGRAM !The Arts Center Children’s Theatre program offers parents the option of registering their children for one or two week sessions during our summer program. Our theater camp is designed to introduce children to the basics of theater and theater performance. Each session will end with the performance of a short play. Last year, our Teens wrote their own play and one of our groups adapted “The Giving Tree” into a play!!

MORE FOR

TEENS!

1. Children must be signed in and out each day by a parent or guardian. We understand that occasionally things go wrong (traffic jams, car trouble etc). If you realize you will be late in picking up your child, please call The Arts Center, (518) 584-4132 to alert staff. This will allow staff to reassure campers and prevent unnecessary worry. Children who will be walking to camp may sign themselves in and out, but parents must provide a letter that states your child has permission to do so. !2. Please do not send your child to camp with cell phones or other electronic devices. Children are allowed to bring cell phones designated for emergency use only, but will be asked to keep them off during scheduled art sessions.!3. Saratoga Arts understands that children thrive in a comfortable and supportive environment and have a strict no bullying policy to ensure that all of our campers enjoy their time here. This policy is reviewed with campers on their first day.!4. Camp Creativity, Teen Arts & Arts Center Children’s Theatre campers will need to bring a lunch, snack and a water bottle each day. Lunches cannot be stored in a refrigerated area nor can they be heated or microwaved. Please keep this in mind when preparing lunches. Imagination Rules campers (ages 5-7) will need to bring a snack and a water bottle each day. ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS ARE PEANUT AND TREE NUT FREE, so please do not pack any foods containing peanuts or tree nuts!5. ART CAMP IS MESSY! Please send your child in appropriate clothes or with a smock to ensure good clothes do not get ruined. We also spend many of our art sessions, snack and lunch times outdoors in Congress Park, so we recommend that children wear or bring sneakers.!6. Saratoga Arts staff is always here to answer questions about our summer camp. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me: Tanya Tobias, Associate Director, at (518) 584-4132 ext. 202 or email: [email protected]. What will my child be doing each week? Good question! Every week children participating in Saratoga Arts’ Summer Fine Arts Camps will be drawing, painting and sculpting with a variety of fine art media including charcoal, pastel, oil pastel, watercolors, acrylic paints, paper mache, wire, etc... Each session of our theater camp program ends with a performance in our Dee Sarno Theater.!Q. My child has a medical condition and/or severe allergies, what is your policy for handling emergency medical situations? The safety and well-being of our campers is Saratoga Arts’ top priority. We have policies and procedures in place to safely and effectively deal with major medical conditions and severe allergies. Please see our Policies and Procedures for Severe allergies on next page for a detailed description of our policies regarding allergies and medical issues. All of our camp assistants are also certified in First Aid and CPR.Q. What are your student-to-faculty ratios? Who are your teachers? Saratoga Arts’ sets the class maximum for Camp Creativity at 14 students per week and Imagination Rules at 12 students per week. We always have 1 Saratoga Arts’ faculty member and 1 camp assistant working with both groups, so in a full camp week the ratio would be 7-1 (campers-teachers) for Camp Creativity and 6-1 (campers-teachers) for Imagination Rules. The only exception to this is during lunch and snack times, when our camp assistants monitor the children. For our theater camp, the class maximum is 20 and the teacher to student ratio is 8-1. 90% of Saratoga Arts faculty are NYS certified art teachers, most of whom are employed at regional schools. Those who are not currently working in the school system work for organizations such as WSWHE BOCES as enrichment teachers, for regional non-profit arts organizations, or are artists employed full time in their field. Saratoga Arts’ camp assistants are often school teacher’s aides or art teachers who are on break for the summer. Saratoga Arts looks for camp assistants who have experience working with children at a variety of learning levels, who are trained in adult, child and infant CPR and First Aid and who have a passion for the arts and art-making.!Q. My child is younger than the minimum age, but I would like to for them to participate in the camp for older children - can I sign him/her up for any camp, regardless of age? This is a question we are frequently asked and it is determined on a case-by-case basis. Saratoga Arts’ staff take into account the ages of the other children registered for that week, whether or not the child in question has participated in an all-day camp before, what activities are scheduled for that week, and what that child’s art and art-making experience is. We often speak to parents several times to keep them updated on the status of their child’s pending registration.

Severe Food Allergies - 5 steps to a safe summer camp experience#Step I - Let’s Meet! A meeting is scheduled with the parent/s and child approximately three weeks prior to the child’s first day of camp. Attending the meeting will be Saratoga Arts’ Education Director and another staff representative, two summer camp assistants and one Saratoga Arts’ summer camp faculty representative. This is an opportunity for parents to talk to us about their child’s allergy, what reaction/s the child has had, train us in the proper administration of epi-pens, etc... and discuss the parent’s concerns and questions.!

Step II - Getting Everybody on Board! The week before your child is scheduled to start camp, a letter will go home to all parents who also have children registered that week. The letter describes the severity of food allergies, encourages parents to take them seriously and asks them not to include the food your child is allergic to (peanuts, tree nuts, strawberries, etc...) in their child’s lunch and/or snack. Teachers and camp assistants are also notified. Don’t worry - no child or other parent will know who

the child with the allergy is - privacy is very important to us!!

Step III - A Few Reminders to Parents! Saratoga Arts staff and camp assistants will remind all parents before they sign their children in, post signs reminding parents on all of the classroom doors and provide information about the severity of food allergies for parents to take home.Step IV - Let’s Talk!Saratoga Arts’ staff always welcome campers the first day! We talk about summer camp rules as well as what campers will be doing. During weeks where there are severe allergies to consider, Saratoga Arts’ staff will also talk about the importance of not sharing food and notifying summer camp teachers and assistants of emergencies.!

Step V - Just in Case! During weeks children with severe food allergies are registered, all lunches will be looked over by our summer camp assistants. If a child’s lunch and/or snack contains the restricted food, it is removed from the classroom and will be replaced with a healthy, safe alternative.!

“There is No Place for Bullying in the Arts”!

!Did you know students who participate in the arts do better in other subjects, like reading, math and science? !Saratoga Arts understands that art, whether theater or visual, is best created in a safe, comfortable environment, where children are allowed to freely express themselves. Because of this, Saratoga Arts has adopted a no tolerance policy against bullying. !Saratoga Arts defines “bullying” as any act or verbalization that is intended to physically or emotionally hurt another individual. This includes name-calling, making negative comments to, or about another student, physically touching another student in a harmful or hurtful manner, and/or being disrespectful toward another student.!If Saratoga Arts’ faculty, staff or camp assistants witness bullying, the following progressive steps are taken:!

Step I - the student will receive a verbal warning and a reminder about our “no bullying” policy!Step II - the student will be asked to leave the classroom, will speak to the Education Director about the consequences of his/her actions and parent/guardian will be notifiedStep III - the parent/guardian of the child will be contacted and the child will not be allowed to return to summer camp - no refunds will be issued if a student is asked to leave!

- Saratoga Arts’ staff talk to campers their first day about our no bullying policy!!
