should bring to camp, but our team will be hard at work on helping them bring home our core values of caring,
honesty, respect, and responsibility. We look forward to seeing you and your camper for

TABLE OF CONTENTS
Mission Statement:
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body
for all.
Goals and Objectives:
Our cause is for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Our summer camp
program, as part of the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, strives to instill the core values of Respect,
Responsibility, Honesty, and Caring. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who
they are and what they can achieve. Our staff work with campers to live out these core values as
they lead campers through trying new things and challenging camp activities.
Flat Rock River YMCA Camp is a co-ed premier residential camp located on the Flat Rock River in
southeast Indiana. It is a perfect place for persons of all ages to enjoy a camp experience. Founded in
1946 by the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. Flat Rock is committed to providing a Safe, Fun and
Transformational experience for our campers and guests.
Spiritual Emphasis
We welcome campers of all faiths at Flat Rock. We encourage campers to explore their own spirituality
through nondenominational chapel services that include songs, skits, and stories. Cabins end each day
with an Evening Devotion. Evening Devotions are a great debriefing tool that encourages campers to
discuss their spiritual growth.
Our Staff
The staff are chosen for their ability to work with children and their maturity and commitment to their
growth and the growth of the camp community. They are individually interviewed and personally chosen
for their experience, interest, and qualifications in working with children. More than 50% of them are
former campers! They all must pass a background check and drug screening, complete a rigorous week
of training and earn the needed certifications for their position. Each camp session includes a medical
staff person and all staff are certified in CPR and First-Aid.
ABOUT FLAT ROCK RIVER YMCA CAMP
MISSION AND CORE VALUES
Our Campers
Campers are placed into cabins with other youth within one year of their age and by
gender.
Mini Campers: 7- 9 years old. This half week program gives campers an
opportunity to experience camping away from home with lots of individual attention,
and without the extended stay. Mini- Camp is offered to campers ages 7- 9 and is
available every session. Mini Camp check- in is from 2-3 PM on Sunday. Check- out is
at 9 AM on Wednesday. If your mini camper likes camp and space permits, they can
stay the remainder of the week.
Navigators (Age 7-9). Campers age 7-9 are at the beginning of their camp journey,
finding their way through their first time at an Overnight Camp. Campers are put in
cabins with campers within one-two years from each other to create a magical
experience. Navigators are able to select their Clinics (our daily programs) ahead of
time so they know exactly what they will be learning while they are at camp.
Counselors make sure campers make new friends and know where everything is at
Flat Rock, especially during Cabin Activity Time where campers get a chance to get to
know each other and themselves through fun games. If your camper is a returning
Navigator, they can look forward to seeing some of their favorite counselors and
trying some of our new programs like Astronomy, Dance and Drama.
Explorers (Age 10-12). Explorers unlock a whole new world at camp. As they get
older, campers gain additional experiences, opportunities, and responsibilities.
Explorers sign up for Clinics (or daily programs) on Sunday evening with their cabin.
They gain the opportunity to select from new programs like Robots and Rockets,
Soccer, Basketball, Hiking, and Survival. Cabin Activities expand beyond getting to
know each other and include getting to know new areas of camp. Counselors plan
activities with the input of the campers and in hopes to learn more about themselves
by trying something new.
12 year old Explores have all the benefits of living their final year in the Village or on
the Hill, but with more programs. Every program offered can now be selected by our
12 year old Explorers. Stand Up Paddle Board, 2-hour Survival Course, Kayaking with
a trip down the river. You name it, and they can sign up for it!
Wayfinders (Age 13-15). As our campers become teenagers, they move from the
Village and Hill into the Teen Valley! Along with moving into our traditional Flat Rock
cabins, Wayfinders participate in our weekly Outpost Overnight. Hiking out on
Wednesday night, campers camp out under the stars after a campfire meal, friendship
and fun. Wayfinders are set up to discover a new side of camp where they can
participate in everything camp has to offer. They begin to lead songs like counselors,
return to spend time with their camp friends, and learn about how amazing they are.
Counselors give Wayfinders the opportunity to build their own Cabin Activity time
and have a say in how they want to spend their time, all while teaching them the
YMCA Core Values of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility.
Leadership Campers: 16-17 years old. Leadership campers help reinforce the
camp culture and learn valuable skills related to communication and team work. They
are eligible to participate in our Leadership Development and Counselor In Training
programs.

WHAT TO PACK
ON
Cell Phones and Electronics
Not only are cell phones and other electronic devices expensive and can get stolen or lost, but also their usage
can interfere with a child’s overall experience at camp. Summer camp offers a great opportunity to learn how
to make conversation and navigate friendships while not being constantly connected to and immersed within a
digital world.
Possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia, tobacco, e-cigarettes or alcohol products
is grounds for immediate dismissal from Camp.
Community Living
Personal responsibility and group cooperation are important elements of the camp experience. Mature and
caring staff members work with campers on the importance of caring for one’s personal space and belonging,
assisting in daily cabin clean-up and pitching in with shared responsibilities at camp. We strive to impart our
core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility while being a part of our camp community, so that it
may carry over into our daily lives.

Leadership Development & Ranch Hand Program (LDP Completed Sophomore Year)
The LDP program is a two-week program designed to introduce teens to the knowledge and
techniques they will need to work with children at camp and in other settings. The goal of this
program is to provide training to teens who want to improve skills and become outstanding leaders.
LDPs will focus on become better listeners, develop role modeling values, practice positive discipline,
teaching new skills, leading group games, and building respect. These lifelong talents will benefit
them as they become employees, volunteers, mentors, college students, and leaders. Through leading
children and serving as role models, LDPs will find and develop their own strengths. The LDP campers
live in cabin groups with the other teen campers and participate in the teen special events.
Counselor & Wrangler In Training Program (CIT/WIT Completed Junior Year)
The CIT program is a two-week program where participants are in a transitional period between
camper and counselor. This program is designed for campers who have previously completed a year of
leadership development at Flat Rock. CIT campers are required to complete an application to be
accepted into the program. There is an expectation that they will be leaders among the campers.
Campers in this program will work with an existing counselor in support of a cabin of younger
campers to gain first-hand knowledge and skills and will receive an evaluation on their growth. CIT
program choose their clinics as well as participate in daily workshops.
The CIT program is very helpful for 17 year-old campers to discern if they would like to be a
counselor. Completion of this program makes their staff application stronger, but does not guarantee
a position as a counselor. Applications will be sent after individuals register for this program.

rolling fields. Trail Rides are offered in single or double blocks and the cost must be paid with
registration.
Ranch Camp (Ages 11-16)
Our focus on the responsibility of caring for horses is the heart of our program. Half of your program
day is spent at the Ranch the other half of the day campers will participate in other camp activities
as offered. Our program includes both lessons and trail rides and is for anyone that wishes to learn
more about horses and riding regardless of previous experience. The lessons are structured to
improve each rider’s equestrian skills.
Ranchers will be assigned to a horse and placed in a riding group on par with their experience. They
will be able to change groups as their skills progress. Our program follows the guidelines of the
Horsemanship Safety Association. Having a certified Riding Instructor providing the leadership to our
Ranch staff and program is something we are proud of here at Flat Rock.

What does Flat Rock do if my child has an emergency?
Flat Rock River YMCA Camp has a nurse on staff and a pediatrician on call. Our Nurse and Medical
Staff will treat routine scrapes, cuts, and minor illnesses. In the event of a serious illness or injury
we will contact you directly. We utilize Major Hospital in Shelbyville in the event of an emergency. We
do not carry accident or sickness insurance on our campers. The health insurance information you
provide on your campers Health History form will only be used to facilitate outside medical treatment,
if required. Parents and or guardians are responsible for charges and prescriptions incurred for off-
site medical treatment. Services provided by our camp Medical Staff are free.
What should my camper do if he/she gets ill at camp?
We will only keep sick campers in our infirmary for 24 hours. Therefore, we ask parents of campers
who are ill for more than this time period to care for their child at home. The parent is responsible
for transportation of campers returning home or back to camp due to illness. A child who is sick
before camp begins should stay home for their own sake and for the health of our camp community
until they are healthy enough to fully participate in activities.
We will credit or refund pro-rated camp fees for any child who becomes sick and returns home for
medical reasons.
What happens if my child wets the bed at camp?
Our staff is trained to discreetly deal with bed-wetting. They will also work with your child to help
prevent future occurrences. We have a laundry facility on site to immediately take care of any soiled
clothing or bedding.
Please notify the counselor at check-in if you suspect your camper is a bed wetter. Please talk with
your child about asking their counselor for help if you feel like an accident is likely to occur. Every
effort will be made to prevent accidents. Please pack a mattress cover and extra sheets if you think
they may be needed.
Campers who pack pull-ups for night time are not different. They are prepared!
What if my camper loses something at camp?
Items found during the camp week will be on display outside the Lodge adjacent to the office. Please
check the lodge wall before you leave camp. If you discover that something is missing upon your
return home, please contact camp immediately. Arrangements can be made for lost items. Items not
claimed within two weeks will be donated to the local shelter. Flat Rock is not responsible for lost,
stolen or damaged items
Frequently Asked Questions
My child takes Medications, how does camp handle this?
All medications, including over-the-counter medication, must be turned in during
check-in at the Lodge. Medication will be dispensed by the Medical Staff.
Please do not pack any medications in your child’s suitcase!
All medication brought into camp must be in the ORIGINAL BOTTLE which includes
camper’s name, dosage and time of the dose. Over-the-counter medicine must be in
the original package.
We stock most over-the-counter medication so you should not need to pack any. If you
have questions on any particular medications, please contact our office.
Children who require an Epi-pen or inhaler to be with them at all times must carry it in
their right front pocket so that it is readily available in an emergency situation. If your
child has a back-up Epi-pen or inhaler we ask that you also bring it so that we can
have a back-up in the infirmary. All camper medications can be picked up from the
Lodge during check-out.
How does Flat Rock handle behavior issues?
Discipline: Flat Rock has two general misbehavior types.
Type 1: Behavior is minor but disruptive and inappropriate. This include, but is not limited to:
profanity, tardiness and uncooperative behavior. Campers who engage in such behavior will be asked
to sit out of an activity. Later, they are asked to explain the situation back to the staff member.
Further problems may result in written documentation with logical consequences.
Escalating behavior may result in a meeting with the Program Director or Executive Director. Parents
may be contacted to discuss behavior or special circumstances.
Type 2: Behavior would include, but is not limited to damage or theft of property, assault, verbal
abuse, possessing weapons, tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, sexual misconduct and repeated Type
1 actions. Such behavior will be documented and dealt with immediately and may result in dismissal
from camp. No Refunds Will Be Issued. Parents will be responsible for any transportation required to
pick-up the camper.
Property and Equipment Damage: Parents are financially responsible for intentional damage to
equipment or facilities caused by their child, including removal of graffiti.
What shouldn’t my campers bring to camp?
Cell Phones
Laptops
Ipads/Ipods/tablets/e-readers/Handheld gaming device
Jewelry
Fireworks
Weapons
Pets/animals
Money
How can we thank our camper’s counselors?
We ask our staff not to accept tips. Please show your appreciation by putting the balance of your campers
Trading Post account towards our Annual Campaign and help us provide an amazing camp experience for
more kids at Flat Rock.
How can our camper contact their counselors throughout the year?
YMCA of the USA has a policy that does not allow camper and counselor contact outside of camp. Campers
may write letters to their counselors, and send them to Flat Rock’s address. Flat Rock also maintains a
Facebook page where campers and counselors can communicate.
What if my camper can’t swim?
Every camper is required to take a swim test to determine their comfortability in the pool.
Swim Tests take place on Sunday, directly after check-in. Under the direction of the Head
Lifeguard and with additional lifeguard supervision, campers will swim from the shallow end
to the deep end of the pool. They will then tread water for 2 minutes.
Red Swim Band- Camper struggles swimming to the deep end. These campers are signed
up for 1 clinic of swim lessons and must wear a life jacket and stay in the shallow end of
the pool during free swim periods. Campers are not allowed to utilize the rope swing or
Wet Willy Waterslide.
Blue Swim Band- Camper struggles to swim in the deep end, but are tall enough to stand
in the shallow end of the pool with their chest out of water. These campers are signed up
for 1 clinic of swim lessons and stay in the shallow end of the pool during free swim
periods. Campers are not allowed to utilize the rope swing or Wet Willy Waterslide.
Yellow Swim Band-Campers struggle treading water, but can swim from the shallow to
the deep end. These campers can swim in the shallow end of the pool without assistance,
but cannot go into the deep end of the pool.
Green Swim Band-Campers can swim to the deep end and can tread water for 2 minutes.
These campers can be in both the shallow and deep end of the pool without a life jacket
and can climb the rock wall in the deep end of the pool.
