The gallery showcases monthly juried exhibits as well as other selected work by local artists. Starting with short poses (20 min to one hour) in the first week, students will have the opportunity to create several “sketches”, before working on longer poses (2 to 3 hours the second week) and finishing with one final pose the third week. The class will also address technical aspects of clay sculpting such as types of clay, tools, armatures, requirements for firing and more. Demonstrations and hands-on critique will be an important part of the class.

Building your own canvases can save a lot of money and produce a better quality surface than commercial ready-made canvases. Learn to build your own 4’ x 4’ high-quality canvas for your future paintings. Students should purchase all materials on supply list. SILK SCARF ICE DYEING | Amy DiPlacidoSunday, July 16 from 10AM-3PM | $75 / $64Learn the exciting and unpredictable process of ice dyeing. Students will dye a one-of-a-kind silk scarf using fiber reactive dyes and ice.  As the ice melts, it separates the dyes creating unique and modeled fabric. Materials fee of $20 due to instructor. ART & WINE: ABSTRACT ART | Stella ZhangFriday, July 21 from 6-8:30PM | $55 / $47Stella Zhang will demonstrate simple techniques and unconventional media used to create a unique abstract artwork. Then, try these techniques for yourself on your own canvas. We will use sand, glue, pigment, found elements and more. Each student will go home with a one-of-a-kind work suitable for gifting or framing. Your first two glasses of wine are included.

ATMOSPHERIC PLEIN AIR PAINTING | Mark MonsarratSaturday, July 22 from 10AM-4PM | $115 / $98Begin or improve your plein air (outdoor) painting skills under Mark’s expert instruction. His unique lock-step, paint-along demo insures students actually practice and absorb his proven techniques for producing great-looking traditional landscape paintings. Working in one of the many beautiful sites of the area, you will learn Mark’s easy three-step method and simple palette to master the art of landscape painting. Class will meet first at PAL, then proceed to a nearby outdoor location.

PAINTING PORTRAITS THE EASY WAY | Robert DvorakSunday, July 23 from 10AM-5PM | $89 / $76In this workshop you will learn good habits for painting portraits. Robert will demonstrate easy portrait proportions, how to apply colors in order, mixing accurate skin tones, keeping your painting looking fresh, and how to paint the eyes and mouth so that they look alive. No matter your skill level or background, this class will have you painting watercolor portraits with satisfaction in no time. A materials fee of $15 will cover your watercolor paper, color handout and model fees. A travel watercolor set and brush will be available for $16.

HANDBUILT MUGS AND DECORATIVE SURFACES | Tova CooperSaturday, July 29 from 10AM-2PM & August 12 from 10AM-2PM | $150 / $128In this workshop, you will make several mugs by hand and experiment with a variety of decorative techniques. Some of these techniques will be used on leather-hard clay—for example, imprinting the surface with stamps, stencils, and other found objects, or carving drawings into underglaze (sgraffito). Other techniques such as majolica and wax resist will be used on the second day of our workshop as we glaze our mugs. $10 materials fee due to instructor.

- AUGUST -HAVE YOUR ART WORK PROFESSIONALLY PHOTOGRAPHED | Jan SilvermanSunday, August 6 | $125 / $106(Pick one of the following sessions) 10-11AM / 11AM-12PM / 12-1PM / 1-2PM / 2-3 PM / 3-4 PM / 4-5PMYour original artwork will be professionally photographed under calibrated lighting using a 36 MB camera, producing images suitable for fine art giclée prints and internet use. The files will be saved on a USB drive in two formats (JPEG for internet use and DNG for printing). Approximately 20 pieces of artwork can be photographed during your hour (more if artwork is close to the same size). If time permits, basic photo editing of your images will be provided. Your artwork can be paintings, mixed media, pottery, sculpture, jewelry or anything you can carry. Discounted printing of your art on paper, canvas or metal is available to attendees. Please bring at least a 4 GB USB flash drive to hold the images, or purchase an 8GB one from instructor for $10.

PRINTMAKING WITH PHOTOCOPY TRANSFER | Kathryn KainSunday, August 13 from 11AM-4PM | $120 / $102This workshop focuses on printing images from a photocopy or laser print, a low tech method for incorporating found and photographic imagery in a monotype. Also known as gum print or paper lithography, this method is safe and non- toxic. We will cover the basics of printing on the etching press and how to handle and modify oil-based inks. Working from black and white photocopies, students collage and layer to create unique images. Original drawings may be copied and printed as well. We will be working on paper but this technique can be adapted to other surfaces such as a smooth prepared panel.

ART & WINE: CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING WITH MAY SHEI | May SheiFriday, August 18 from 6:30-8PM | $55 / $47Try your hand at brush painting while sipping on some inspiration. Artist May Shei will lead students through a step-by-step painting of contemporary Chinese flowers and bugs, utilizing traditional brushes and watercolor on rice paper. All materials and first 2 glasses of wine are included.

CERAMIC FAIRY HOUSES | Tova CooperSaturday & Sunday, September 9, 10 & 23 from 10AM-2PM | $189 / $161In this workshop, we will make ceramic fairy houses. On the first day of the workshop, we will make the houses, add windows, doors, patios, and other decorative elements. On the second day, we will glaze them. HAVE YOUR ART WORK PROFESSIONALLY PHOTOGRAPHED | Jan SilvermanSunday, September 17 | $125 / $106(Pick one of the following sessions) 10-11AM / 11AM-12PM / 12-1PM / 1-2PM / 2-3 PM / 3-4 PM / 4-5PMYour original artwork will be professionally photographed under calibrated lighting using a 36 MB camera, producing images suitable for fine art giclée prints and internet use. The files will be saved on a USB drive in two formats (JPEG for internet use and DNG for printing). Approximately 20 pieces of artwork can be photographed during your hour (more if artwork is close to the same size). If time permits, basic photo editing of your images will be provided. Your artwork can be paintings, mixed media, pottery, sculpture, jewelry or anything you can carry. Discounted printing of your art on paper, canvas or metal is available to attendees. Please bring at least a 4 GB USB flash drive to hold the images, or purchase an 8GB one from instructor for $10.

BASIC STUDIO LIGHTING SOLUTIONS: A HANDS ON CLASSRichard Dischler & RDPWSunday, September 24 from 10:30AM-12PM | $40 / $34Participants will learn how to set up and use a wide range of lighting equipment all of which can take their portrait photography to the next level and beyond. In this hands-on class, students will learn how to use various light modifiers for studio strobes and on-camera flash units. You will leave this session with a good deal of actual time using and understanding how lighting can play an important role in creating a good portrait. Bring your camera and favorite portrait lens.

ADVANCED STUDIO LIGHTING SOLUTIONS: AN IN-DEPTH HANDS-ON CLASSRichard Dischler & RDPWMonday, September 25 from 1-4PM | $140 / $119Prerequisite: Basic Studio Lighting SolutionsThis is a class for those who want a more advanced understanding of portrait lighting. The class emphasis is on learning and understanding by actually taking photographs with your own camera using a wide variety of lighting equipment and modifiers. Participants should be prepared to set up, use, and tear down the equipment one would use in creating a portrait. This session has a high instructor-to-participant ratio. Bring your camera and favorite portrait lens. This is a fast-paced fun class.

MODEL FEESModel Fees for classes with a live model are included in the the listed course fee and are not discounted for members.

MATERIALS / SUPPLIESSupply lists are available on the PAL Web site under the course description.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies prior to the start of the first class. Occasionally, a materials fee is listed under the course description. This means that the instructor will provide the needed supplies for the stated fee. Materials fees are payable directly to the instructor at the first class by cash or check.

POLICIESLATE ENROLLMENTAfter a class has started, students may register late in most cases if there is space in the class and if the instructor gives permission. Contact the office at 650.321.3891 to inquire.

CREDIT & REFUNDIf Pacific Art League cancels a class or a workshop for any reason, a full refund will be given.

CLASSES: If a student drops a class at least seven days before the start of the first class, the full fee will be refunded less a $15 administrative fee.

If a student drops a class within two days after the first class, the student may transfer to another class or withdraw and receive a credit less the prorated fee for the class attended and a $15 administrative fee. Credit is valid for 6 months to be used toward another class. No refunds or credit will be given after this date.

WORKSHOPS: If a student withdraws at least 10 days before the start of the workshop, the full fee will be refunded less a $15 administrative fee. No refunds will be given after this date.

PHOTO RELEASE POLICYPAL may take photos of students or artwork for print or online publication, public relations or fundraising, but will not publish photos of minors without written consent from a parent or guardian.

Design, carve, print, repeat! Create original fine art prints from blocks and plates using intaglio and relief printmaking techniques. Learn to transfer drawings and print by hand or with a press, yielding a variety of effects.

Dive into printmaking using a printing press. We will explore monotype, drypoint and collagraph techniques. Unravel the mysteries of watercolor and go wild with acrylic. Animals, still life and your imagination will be the source of inspiration. Each session incorporates basics of color theory, design and composition. Sharp tools will be used.

Students will spend the week making sculptures and objects for everyday use, including mugs and bowls, clay animals, cell phone stands, and wall pockets.
