Unlike last year’s washout, this year’sHigh School Commencement saw thereturn of bright sun, steady breezes, andlow humidity. Once again, thegraduating seniors appeared as anundulating ribbon of gleaming gold andpurple that unfurled the span from thebuilding to the football field.

Superintendent Dr. Rosemary Jonesand Sayville’s Board of EducationPresident John Verdone led theprocession, while the Sayville HighSchool Band, under the direction of Mr.Pete DeSalvo, marked the traditionalmarch with PPoommpp aanndd CCiirrccuummssttaannccee.. Muchlike all their predecessors, the Class of2007 expressed buoyant anticipation asthey took their seats, reciprocating hootsand hollers with the spectators who filledthe bleachers.

Alumni who followed the graduates ontothe field in this year’s traditional AlumniWalk. Under the shady refuge of acanopy specifically set up for theircomfort, Alumni from the years 1943 to1978 could observe the ceremonies.

Ceremonies opened with the NationalAnthem, sung in perfect aa ccaappppeellllaaharmony by the Senior members of theHigh School Jazz Choir: KatherineBuono, Garret Fujarski, Lea Johnson,Michael Keeney, Amanda Lowth,Lorraine Rilling, and Kieran Siao, whowere conducted by Mr. Jeff Hoffman.

Using tongue-in-cheekhumor, Salutatorian ViralPatel tallied the time—iinnccllaassss ppeerriiooddss,, ddaayyss,, aanndd yyeeaarrss—spent by the Class of 2007in High School. The rewardis a “commemorative casethat declares us highschool graduates. Now,while all of you get to sitthere and relax amongyour friends in a sea ofpurple and gold, I am‘rewarded’ with the honor of giving aspeech—lluucckkyy mmee..””

Switching to a slightly more serioustone, Viral reflected on the “journey ofclassification, identification, andrecognition,” which occurs not just inHigh School, or further education, butthroughout life. Whatever socialprominence we attain, everyone must tryto improve the world, “because asBatman so beautifully put it, ‘IT’S NOTWHO I AM UNDERNEATH, BUT WHAT I DOTHAT DEFINES ME.’”

After referencing the superhero’sattributes, Viral alluded to a real-life hero,the so-called ‘Unknown Rebel.’ Only aday after the Tiananmen Square massacre

(in which hundreds of workers,students, doctors, and evenchildren were killed in retaliationfor public protest), this commonman stood alone, holdingshopping bags, before the tanks.He appealed to the humanity ofthe lead-tank driver and “becamean icon for the fight for humanrights and a symbol of couragebecause he stood up and didsomething.”On a more personal level, Viral

explained how his uncle “took a chanceand worked hard to come here toAmerica” from an impoverishedcommunity in India. “He opened aprospering local business. With themoney he earned, he was able to move hissiblings here and establish a successfulliving for each and every one of them.Now, he is adored by my family—for heis a symbol of our success—and has evenmade his way into his nephew’s salutatoryaddress.”

Recognizing that there is so “muchwrong” in today’s world, Viral urged hisclassmates to make an impact, get up andtake action—with the reminder, “It’s notwho I am, but what I do.”

In her opening statement, SayvilleSuperintendent Dr. Rosemary F. Jones firstgreeted the Sayville faculty, the Board ofEducation, and family members inattendance; then she gave specialacknowledgement to the returning SayvilleAlumni who participated in the traditionalprocessional. “You will always be part ofSayville, even after 50 years!”

Addressing the graduates, Dr. Jonescongratulated them for not just “making it,”but for surpassing every other graduating

class in the numbers going offto college, of students

participating in APcourses, or attainingawards, accolades, orchampionships. “You areamazing!”

After asking thegraduates to reflect on

the support they received

so far, she encouraged themto look ahead. “Through

their experience, your parentshave a good idea of what you’re about toface in the real world, and true, manyexperiences and opportunities you have willbe unlike theirs.”

“You may not be as concerned as theyare either. You are probably filled withoptimism...with great plans and undauntedenthusiasm. And this is how it should be!Your forward-looking and forward-thinkingis the progress we all hope for—and eventhough what’s ahead is unknown, you aregoing to get there and try anyway. We wantyou to try anyway.”

Since they already demonstrated theircapacity for doing well, the Superintendentreminded the graduates that “you are alsocapable of doing good, of using your giftsfor the betterment of the world aroundyou.” Dr. Jones cited a poem (see insert)entitled AA nn yy ww aa yy , written by a YaleUniversity Sophomore, and laterembellished upon by Mother Theresa, that

exemplified life’s challenges.Upon her invitation to join in on each

refrain, the graduates grew braver andlouder, landing resoundingly on the wordANYWAY in the final stanza. “No matterwhat path you follow,” Dr. Jones concludedin her own words, “No matter whatobstacles you face, get out there and Dogood ANYWAY [students shouted thechorus]....You’ve been an AWESOME class.God Bless you and good luck!”

Opening with a quote from RobertF. Kennedy: “Fear not the path oftruth for the lack of people walkingon it,” Valedictorian Joseph Catapanocontemplated the beckoning roadahead, “…and whether you havechosen to turn left at the fork towardscollege or right towards a career, theexperiences will undoubtedly beunfamiliar.”

Primarily, it may seem to be aquest for knowledge or for monetary

gain, Joseph remarked, but he speculated how those bumpsin life’s unavoidable journey will shape one’s values andcharacter as well. “It will be one of discovery, self-discovery…. At every turn and every bend, you will happenupon new truths, alter longstanding morals, and abandonbeliefs you no longer hold dear. As you travel the road afterhigh school, your experiences will direct you towardsdiscovering your ethics. Your experiences will guide youtowards unearthing your inner spirit.”

Although the world may “urge you to turn right,” even if“you want to turn left,” Joseph reminded his classmates thatthe decision is individual. “The course of your journey willbe entirely up to you.”

Joseph added that this road toward self-discovery will notbe without conflict or temptation, “because there will alwaysbe people who oppose your sacred truths…” or pitfalls thatwill “coax you into abandoning your beliefs for thesake of personal gain.”

In his parting words, Joseph encouraged hisfellow graduates with a universal truth: “Nevercompromise your sense of self simply tomove forward. Whether you create, join,accept, or denounce, any action must reflectyour inner values… ‘fear not [your] [road]of truth;’ embrace it!”

“Technology is changing yourworld—a world that hasamazing opportunities for you,”said United States SenatorCharles Schumer during hisspecial appearance at theSayville High SchoolCommencement. In addition tocongratulating the Class of

2007 for graduating from oneof the finest High Schools onLong Island, Mr. Schumerencouraged them “to GO forit! You may make somemistakes, but pick yourself up,dust yourself off, and moveforward.”

• People are often unreasonable,illogical and self-centered.;FORGIVE THEM ANYWAY.• If you are kind, people mayaccuse you of selfish, ulteriormotives; BE KIND ANYWAY.

• The graduates met and/or

exceeded the academic standards at

Sayville High School: 93% of the students

in the Class of 2007 will go on to

further education and 92% have earned

a Regents Diploma this year.

• At the 33rd Annual Scholastic

Awards program, administrators, faculty,

and staff presented 192 awards to 102

deserving students. Gold or purple

medallions worn by the graduates

indicated these awards.

• So far, 81 students received

academic or community scholarship

awards that value well over 1.8 million

dollars.

• Six students were recognized by

the National Merit Scholarship

foundation for academic excellence.The

National Merit Commended students

are William Beck,Trevor Caverly,Michelle DeBonis, Caryn RebeccaRosenberg,April Louise Rueb, andLara Schmitt.Trevor Caverly was

named a National Merit Scholarship winner.

• Art students earned numerous

awards and received great recognition at

such exhibits as SAVA, the BAFFA High

School Student Invitational Art Exhibit,

as well as at the Congressional District

Art Competition.

• Our Music Department held many

outstanding concerts throughout the

year and received many outstanding

awards. Of special note:The High School

Wind Ensemble under the direction of

Mr. Peter DeSalvo received the Level 6

(Gold) Rating with Distinction at the

New York State Festival; our Jazz

Ensemble, along with the Wind

Ensemble, won first-place awards for

best overall ensemble and six soloist

awards at the Music Festival this spring.

In addition, the Music Department

worked collaboratively with Sayville

Theatre Arts and successfully produced

this year’s outstanding musical 42ndStreet.

• In addition to the Musical, our

Theatre Arts students performed Fall

One-Act Plays,Winter Backstage

Theatre Plays, and Seniors directed or

wrote the May One-Act Plays.

• In the arena of Interscholastic

Athletics, Sayville had a spectacular year:

22 of our 25 varsity teams participated

in postseason competitions; 22 student-

athletes won an

unprecedented number

of Gold Key Awards

from Section XI this

year, 25 teams were

Scholar-Athlete Teams.

Sayville won individual and

team championships in 13 sports; our

athletes also earned County and Long

Island Championship titles. This year, wewon more Team, Division, County, andLong Island Championships than anyother school in Suffolk County.

• High School Service organizations

provided volunteers, support,and raised

money for The Special Olympics,TheAmerican Heart Association,The LupusFoundation,The Salvation Army,TheAmerican Cancer Society,The March ofDimes, Relay for Life, Earth Day,The 5thAnnual March to the Sea to FightLeukemia,The Keith Nintzel 5K MemorialEvent, and raised thousands of dollars

As the Sayville Board of Educationrepresentative (and as a father of one ofthe graduates), President John Verdoneimparted words of farewell: “Thirty yearsago, when I was in your seat I neverthought I would be speaking to HighSchool graduates in front of my son Rob.I’ve known many of you since your daysin kindergarten. Many more, buildingstage crew sets….”

Mr. Verdone admitted that as heprepared his speech, he “had no ideawhat to say,”so he aked around foradvice. “Many said, ‘keep it short; wishthem the best. Whatever you do, don’t tella joke.’ So, I closed my eyes for amoment and reflected back to a beautifulsummer day in 1977, sitting on a football

field much likethis yourself,listening to aperson much likemyself.”

Conveying thatas time goes on“today will remainin your memoriesforever,” Mr.Verdone praisedthe graduates.“The very fact thatyou are sitting

here today is a testament of your hardwork, your intelligence, and your drive.The world you are about to enter will bedifferent for each and everyone of you.Find your purpose. Take pride in yourendeavors. Your success will truly bewhat you believe in.”

Following the presentationof diplomas to the Class

of 2007, Class PresidentRosalie Serra offered thetraditional Response.

Rosalie Serra stoodbefore her classmatesfor the last time as theirpresident. Citing ThePerks of Being aWallflower by StevenChbosky as one of themost important books she readoutside of school, Rosalieexplained why. “[it] made mecontemplate the ending of highschool and what the future maybring as we graduate...I am

proud to say that

our class has metthe challenges andtaken advantage ofthe opportunitiesthat have beenoffered to us.”

Rosaliehighlightedmemories that“tested ourteamwork and our

resilience.” With thisyear’s homecoming paradepostponed by a fiercerainstorm, their Senior float—“the largest float anyone hadever seen, complete with aworking cannon,” didn’t get toparade through main street.

“Our disappointment wasshort lived, however, whenwe had created the first-everSayville High School SpiritNight, which I believe, wasone of the most exciting andunique homecomingcelebrations ever!”

Thanking the manypeople over the past fouryears who supported the class,Rosalie acknowledged the manychallenge that tested theirresolve—especially the recenttremendous loss: “Themembers of the Class or 2007are carrying flowers in memoryof our classmate Billy Raimo.He and his family are in all of

our hearts today.”Assured that their strength

will sustain them through theirfutures, Rosalie closed with BillGate’s poignant advice in abook entitled TThhee TThhiinnggss YYoouuNNeevvee rr LLeeaarrnneedd iinn SScchhoooo ll .

With a hearty shout, Rosaliewished congratulations to theClass of 2007.

After God Bless America was sung,Mr. Buderman thanked the class officers,class advisors, and complimented theClass of 2007 for their commitment toexcellence in all arenas. “I can honestlysay without hesitation that the Class of2007 has been a tremendous class to workwith in every regard. I applaud andencourage you to continue to be asenergetic, hardworking, and

committed toyour goalsand yourdreams.”Before hecould finish the words “I congratulatethe Class of 2007,” gold and purple capsskyrocketed toward the sunny skies.

The Sayville Districtauditorium on GreeneAvenue afforded each

elementary school a spacious venue for their individual Moving-Up ceremonies. On different days and at varying times,Cherry, Lincoln, and Sunrise created their own distinctive programs that included music, guest speakers, the Principal’sAddress, recognition to outstanding students (see lists below), nostalgic essays or slide presentations about theirlearning experiences through the years, and a PTA-sponsored reception enjoyed by all the students and their guests.

Exceeding their usual standards ofmusical excellence with an “unbeatable”percussion performance on steel garbagecans, the Middle School students provedonce again why their school was therecipient of so many awards.

Following, Superintendent Dr. RosemaryJones offered encouragingwords. “How incrediblyspecial you are! Assuperintendent, I am sovery proud of you. Withthis much talent, you willcontinue to bring homeawards… Good luck in High School.”

Commencing his address, Dr. Schartnerreflected on the students’ birth year, 1993:Bill Clinton was in his first term, TomHanks won the Oscar for Philadelphia. “This

group is a very, very specialgroup,” he added. “Theysupport and respect eachother. Some have given 100hours of communityservice.”

Remarking that “the High School haslimitless opportunities, thanks to acommunity that supports it,” Dr. Schartnerhighlighted a few: “There’s an InternetRadio Program; one of the top musicprograms in the country; a phenomenal artprogram. Students can even get CISCOlicenses as Network technicians.”

Dr. Schartner also warned the parents.“In five seconds with the click of a mouse,kids know what’s going on, so it’simportant,” Dr. Schartner advised, “tonetwork with other parents. Talk to theparents in other households to ensureproper supervision at parties, and stayinvolved by giving your children support,

encouragement, andguidance.”

Concluding, Dr.Schartner had thestudents stand to facetheir parents. His finalwords, “Congratulations,Good Luck!” wereswallowed by therising swell ofapplause and cheers.
