Hello, Giinagay, Hai,
Emergency planning and arrangements during the 2017-18 Bush
Fire season. I am writing to advise you that once again our school
has been identified as being in a bush fire prone area and to inform
you of our School Bush Fire Strategy. Our “Neighbourhood Safe
Place” during a bush fire emergency is Club Scotts – The Bowling
Club. It has a large open spaced building that is away from
bushland and can provide some protection from the immediate
threat of a fire.
These communication protocols will be used during an emergency;
Messages and updates will be sent through the school Facebook
page, notifications through our SkoolBag app, this will ensure
parents/carers are aware of temporary arrangements for the
school. Further information can also be found at NSW Department
of Education’s School Safety website: http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/
about-us/news-at-det/bushfire-safety.
Next term I will be forming a focus group for the canteen reform and
to support the growing of our Kitchen Garden program.
For more information, please visit the new Healthy School Canteens
website: http://healthy-kids.com.au/school-canteens/canteen-
guidelines/nsw-healthy-school-canteen-strategy/. Please let me
know if you would like to be part of this Focus group in Term 4
2017.
Thanks to Janet and Angie for the time and energy you have put into
the Ethics program this term. Due to its growing popularity we need
more Ethic teachers to be trained. Ethic Training workshops will be
in Newcastle and Kingscliff on October 14 and 15, and the next
Sydney training sessions will resume in December. Please contact
Angie or Janet if there are any other parents who have time and are
passionate about kids.

factor in student success than family income or education.”

In our community-connected school a continual focus is
strengthening the bond between the school and the home/
community. Thanks to the parents who came along to meet
John Walters the creator of the home PAIR reading program. His
message was clear, the value of support from the home and
community cannot be overstated. Children in homes where
reading is modelled and encouraged come to school primed for
success. When the home places importance on literacy, the
child more easily understands and embraces a school with a
culture of literacy. Next term this world class Home Reading
Program will be implemented in Kindy and Year 1, where
children take books home that have tips and strategies in the
books so that parents know which strategy to use and how.
Everyone have a wonderful restful school break and I look
forward to leading and learning with
you all in Term 4.
Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Spotlight Wildlife Tour
Nambucca Valley Land Care are organising a spotlight tour of Yarriabini National Park as part of
their Yarrahapinni to Killiekrankie Bush Connect project. The NSW National Parks Discovery
Rangers will take you on a guided spotlight tour of Yarriabini National Park, where we’ll learn about
and meet the park’s nocturnal wildlife. The tour will be held on Friday 27th October at 6.30pm at
the Pines Picnic area in Yarriabini National Park. If you are interested in attending, please return
note that went home last week.
Donations Needed
We have a few projects going on around the school and we would like to ask for donations of the
following: egg cartons, material for boomerang bags (eg. old doonas, pillow cases, old t-shirts),
unwanted sewing machines, cotton, pins, tin cans (eg. baked bean cans), colourful tiles for
mosaics, old CD’s. Donations of items can be dropped off to the office.
End of Term 3
Our last day of Term 3 is Friday 22nd September. Students and staff return for Term 4 on Monday
9th October. There will be no staff development day at the beginning of Term 4 as they will be held
at the end of the term/year.
Book Fair and Grandparents Day
Our Book Fair and Grandparents Day will be held on Friday 20th October. To celebrate books and
reading, students are asked to dress up as their favourite book character. Students are
encouraged to ask their grandparents to come along. It will be a fun day with prizes going to each
class. More information regarding the day will go home early next term.
Unwell children
We would like to remind parents that children who are unwell need to stay at home. They need to
rest and get better, not come to school where they will feel terrible and pass on their germs to
everyone else. We appreciate your understanding. Also, just a reminder that children who are
unwell for 3 consecutive days or more, a medical certificate must be obtained from your doctor.

Our Colour Fun Walk-A-Thon is on this Thursday 21st September from 12.30-1.30pm to raise
money for our canteen. Our canteen is in desperate need of a complete refurbishment or
replacement; there are requirements which we are not meeting and we have a time frame to get
things up to scratch. We really appreciate everyone’s support.
Students are to dress up in colourful clothes and participate in a walk and be sponsored for their
efforts. Students can also get their hair sprayed on the day for $2. Don’t forget your water bottle!
The canteen will be open for students to purchase cold drinks, ice blocks, special cold treats and
fruit while the walk-a-thon is on. We’d love to have you come and join us or support the walkers
on the day. We also need a few volunteers to stamp the student’s cards each time they
complete a lap, please call the school or see Cass Lane if you can help out on the day. Money to
be brought into school by Friday 13th October. Thank you in advance for your support.

A man wants to enter an exclusive club, but he doesn't know the password. Another man walks to the door and the
doorman says 12, the man says 6, and is let in. Another man walks up and the doorman says 6, the man says 3, and is let
in. Thinking he had heard enough, he walks up to the door and the doorman says 10, he says 5, and he isn't let in.
What should he have said? (see back page for answer)

Bumper Lettuce Crop in the Kindergarten/Year One Garden
On Friday the K/1 Class harvested 7 beautiful Mignonette Lettuce! We have been nurturing them since they
were tiny baby seedlings. After a good wash and drip dry we assembled delicious sandwiches. We had a
variety of yummy fresh ingredients including tomatoes, freshly baked wholemeal bread from the local bakery,
butter, mayonnaise, tasty cheese, freshly boiled farm eggs from Bu Bettina's chooks and of course our
beautiful crisp, green lettuce. Everyone got to create and devour their own sandwich combination!
Now to get planting with some new vegges to get ready for the Spring Fair!
Tools for Learning The “Tools for Learning” shed has been very successful these past few
weeks. All projects have been student generated with a minimal
amount of assistance from myself.
The emphasis has been “If you can think it, then you can make it”.
