The teacher should demonstrate first, and then the children should be encouraged to demonstrate. • Matching game: The teacher distributes 10 cards with ordinal numbers listed 1st to 10th written on them. The children are given another set with ordinal numbers in words, ‘first’ to ‘tenth’. Children place all 20 cards face down on a table. Each child takes a turn to turn over 2 cards. If they are a match (2nd/second), the child keeps them and has another turn. If they do not match, they are turned back, in the same place as they were originally. The child with the most pairs wins. • Beat the clock: Give the children 10 easy computations to do. Time them. Objectives Tick Date • Explore, develop and apply the commutative properties of addition. • Explore, develop and apply the zero properties of addition. • Use the language of ordinal number, 1st to 10th. • Develop an understanding of addition by combining or partitioning sets, use concrete materials, 0–20. • Add numbers without renaming, within 0–20. Mathematical language, and talk and discussion • Make, count, altogether, add, plus, equals, more, sign, sum, total, commutative, more, less, How many?, zero • First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, last, second last, behind, after, in front of • Combine, partition, make, count, altogether, add, plus, equals, sign, sum, jump, split, total, more, less, How many? 13 Planet Maths Teacher Resources • 1st Class Use of the environment • Numbers around us (at home and out and about) Resources • Number fans, cubes, counters, lollipop sticks, commutative template numbers • Beads, buttons, shells, dice, unifix cubes, flash cards of ordinal numbers 1st to 10th, flash cards of ordinal words ‘first’ to ‘tenth’ • 100 squares, number lines, whiteboards, markers, paper, pencils, number fans, bean bags, hula hoops • Folens Planet Maths online activities Assessment • Observation • Record of work Integration PE Art Differentiation Higher attainers: Separate activity sheets.
