The Minister also chairs the National Council for Higher Education and Scientific Re-search, whose membership is composed of university presidents, vice chancellors, rep-resentatives of private and foreign higher education, undersecretaries of some federal ministries, and some national dignitaries. The Council is responsible for planning and coordination of higher education and scientific research policies.

The Ministry of Higher Education was established in 1975 to set policies, plans and programs for higher education and coordinate higher education institutions. Box: Khartoum 11111, SudanE-mail: vc@uofk.edu Website: www.uofk.eduVice Chancellor: Prof. Ahmed Mohamed Suliman BSc, MSc, PhDOverview : The roots of the University of Khartoum (U of K) go back to 1898 when Lord Kitchener of Khartoum proposed founding a college in memory of General Gordon.The new college, named the Gordon Memorial College, was officially opened in 1902. A secondary stratum was added in 1905 for the purpose of training assistant engineers. In 1924, the College developed into a vocational secondary school concentrating on teaching the following dis-ciplines: Sharia, Engineering, Teachers’ Training, Clerical Work, Accounting and Science. In the same year Kitchener School of Medicine was established. The year 1936 witnessed the beginning of higher education in the Sudan with the establishment of the School of Law. By 1940 the College included schools of Agriculture, Arts, Law, Science, Engineer-ing and Veterinary Science. Each School was attached to the government department in which the graduates would be expected to work. In January 1945, all these schools were brought under one administration in a special arrangement with the University of London. The College was upgraded in 1951 to become Khartoum University College. In the same year Kitchener School of Medicine was incor-porated in the University College. The University of London set the examinations and awarded the degrees. The outstanding students were awarded bachelor degrees from the University of London and the rest obtained the College diplomas. The present University of Khartoum is the result of the natural transformation of the University College of Khar-toum when the country became independent in 1956. The bill giving full University status to the College was passed by Parliament on 24th July 1956, since then, the University witnessed considerable expansion. ABOUT: Al Zaeim Al Azhari University-(AAU-Sudan) was established in 1993 as a government university. AAU-Sudan is a comprehensive, coeducational university that provides un-dergraduate and graduate instruction in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences and engineering. Today, more than 612 faculty members instruct ap-proximately 16736 undergraduate students and 3727 graduate students . Kassala State is unique as regards the TB problem because the state lies on the international border with Eriteria and Ethiopia . The centre addresses the basic clinical and epidemiologic problems of TB and also address the social aspect and impact of tuberculosis . it also looks at cooperation with local, regional and international tuber-culosis research centers.

RSU objectives• The primary objectives of the University, as stipulated in its Act, are to train manpower for the developmental needs of the Red Sea State in particular and all other Sudanese re-gions. It envisages the development of this skilled manpower to seek and to determine ra-tional methods of exploitation of the vast natural resources of the country for development. • The objectives take into account the building up of social life within the national goals of economic development, forging national integration and promoting human and interna-tional understanding.

The National Centre for Research (NCR)

The National Centre for Research (NCR) was established in 1991 to replace the for-mer National Council for Research established in 1970. NCR was established as a fully fledged multidisciplinary institution mandated to conduct scientific applied research for development in specialized areas not adequately covered by other research organizations e.g. medicinal and aromatic plants, remote sensing, biotechnology . The National Centre for Research (NCR) is currently under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.The National Centre for Research Institutes:

1. Environment and Natural Resources Research Institute (ENRRI) The institute established in 1992. The need for a body to carryout applied research in the field of conservation and development of natural resources and their sustainable utilization as well as environment protection was the main reason for establishing ENRRI.

2. Institute of Engineering Research and Materials TechnologyThe Institute of Engineering Research and Materials Technology (IERMT) offers a wide range of interesting research programmes in four broad areas: Engineering, Materials Sci-ence. Appropriate technology and Electronics and communications. The Institute has ca-pabilities in materials synthesis, integration and fabrication, analysis, characterization and design.

3. Institute of Space Research and Aerospace (ISRA)The institute of Space Research and Aerospace (ISRA) was established according to the State Minister of Science and Communication resolution and has been launched and be-came active on 27th Rajab 1434, 6thof June 2013 so as to nationalize the research and development of the different fields of space science and technology in Sudan.

4. Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI) The Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI) was established in 1972.The main ac-tivities of the TMRI are to undertake applied research programmes on the transmission and control of parasitic diseases. Improve the diagnostic methodology and implement new finer tools for the control of endemic diseases in the Sudan.

5. Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Institute and Traditional Medicine In 1972 Medicinal and Aromatic Research Unit was established by the National Council for Research. During 1983, this unit was upgraded to become an institute affiliated to the Council of Medical Research. In 1992 it became a fully-fledged research institute.

Remote Sensing and Seismology AuthorityRemote Sensing Authority (RSA) was established in 1977, as a National Remote sensing Center (NRSC) within the National Council for Research, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. In 1996 the Remote Sensing Center was renamed to Remote Sensing Authority and affiliated to the National Center for Research, Ministry of Science and Technology.

7. Commission for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (CBGE)The Commission for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering was established on the 9th of February, 1993, by the National Centre for Research (NCR) to help in solving economi-cal, environmental, health and nutritional problems using modern biotechnical research techniques, with special emphasis on the applied techniques. It links research with de-velopment and planning of the country. The CBGE acts as a focal point in Sudan for the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Trieste, Italy.

The “Sudan Atomic Energy Commission (SAEC) Act, 1996” was passed by the National Assembly, and assented to by the President of the Republic.
