Title of your Great Idea Water Based Modular Promenade Solutions

Describe your Great Idea Describe your Great Idea, why it is unique, how it is relevant to The Bays Precinct and, broadly, how it supports the ambition for the Bays Precinct (Limit: 400 words)

The Great Idea: To provide a dynamic, flexible and sustainable solution to the movement of people around the Bays Precinct and beyond. This is achieved by the combination of fixed and floating boardwalk solutions over the water in a modular format that can be moved, added to or left as a permanent solution. We believe the addition of this style of boardwalk will help increase the connectivity solution of the Bays Precinct itself and join into the existing Darling Harbour connection. Safe Adaptable Infrastructure: Modularisation and adaptability of promenade infrastructure such as floating pontoons which can be attached together in various configurations to achieve narrow intimate meandering walkways or direct cycle paths or even wider (to accommodate crowds in peak events) fixed or floating cafe destination or view points along the journey. The larger fixed modules can be used to anchor sections of floating modules and would become areas for small food and beverage areas, rest areas, water craft hire, etc. The fixed platforms would consist of concrete structures floated into position and sunk in the proposed location (minimal disturbance to the sea bed). These sections could be roofed, including photovoltaic cells for lighting and providing small quantities of power for other café type requirements. Rainwater harvesting from the modules could also be accommodated as underslung pipework to the platform and used for the irrigation of small planted areas, including growth up and around the roof structure providing a cooler more environmentally sympathetic solution. Floating and fixed boardwalk areas are proposed as plug and play type infrastructure. Electrical and rainwater harvesting would simply plug together between modules when adding or modifying the layouts. Illuminated pathways: In addition to low level lighting provided by solar power, the modules could be covered in ‘glow in the dark’ coatings. This

form of lit path provides instant recognition of way finding, a novel lighting approach, an environmentally friendly solution WRAP (Waste Recycling): As darling harbour and Sydney super yachts redevelop there are likely to be significant quantities of serviceable existing marine pontoons and access gangways. Bays promenade infrastructure could safely utilise these existing items and contribute significantly to the sustainability profile of the bay's project.

Does your Great Idea align with Sydney’s Global Competitiveness? How? (Limit: 100 words)

This solution allows the Precinct to safely accommodate larger numbers of people for signature events, such as the New Year’s Eve fireworks, without the cost of permanent infrastructure. This would increase the attraction of visiting Sydney for keynote events and the associated tourism activities.

Does your Great Idea align with Living Bays? How? (Limit: 100 words)

Our idea increases the pedestrian and cycle connectivity solution options to the Bays Precinct. Being modular allows adaptation for; events, a staged solution and the ability to accommodate the changing needs of the area in the future – a living, moving changing Bay. The use of photovoltaic cells, rainwater harvesting, glow in the dark pavement and cooling vegetation growth to the roofed areas of boardwalk provides a sustainable solution that improves the link between the natural water environment and developed areas.

Does your Great Idea align with Transport and Infrastructure? How? (Limit: 100 words)

By increasing the ability for the massive movement of pedestrians across the precinct, between public transport nodes this would support and encourage the use of the public transport network when visiting the sites.

Does your Great Idea align with Exemplary Urban Places? How? (Limit: 100 words)

The over water boardwalk solutions presented enhance the public utility of the area with a more intimate experience with one of the Bays greatest assets - the marine environment. Being closer to the water on floating and fixed pontoons increases the users feel of the maritime environment experience. Including and promoting the use of the Green solutions (rainwater harvesting, photovoltaic cells, glow in the dark paths) will also enhance the users feel of proximity to the environment.

GOSFORD GLOW IS MADE OF A NATURAL MINERAL COMPOSITE THAT WAS SPRAYED ON THE SURFACE OF THE EXISTING PATH. MINERALS WITHIN THE COMPOSITE ABSORB UV DURING THE DAY AND GLOW AT NIGHT TIME. THE MATERIAL IS NON-TOXIC AND FAUNA-FRIENDLY AND BECAUSE IT DOESN’T CAST A SHADOW IS VERY LOW IN LIGHT POLLUTION.
