ANSWER: The capacitor (condenser) on the Power Supply Unit is still charged with electricity.

Before servicing the machine, make sure to press the Sub Power Key, after disconnecting the

power cord from the machine, to discharge the charged power from the capacitor on the Power

supply unit.

Press the Sub Power Key , after the machine power is OFF and power

cord is unplugged, to discharge the electrical charge remaining in the

Capacitors on the Power Supply Unit.

The Main Power Lamp is still lit after the machine

power is turned OFF.

QUESTION 4 : Why does the Power Supply Unit gives a shock when touched with machine power

ON ?

ANSWER: The Power Supply Unit is very dangerous.

All the machines, including the ComColor, the Power Supply Unit must not be touched when the

machine power is ON.

Touching the Power Supply Unit, especially the Primary power area, with the machine powered

ON can lead to fatal accidents.

Make sure to turn OFF the machine power, disconnect the power cord from the machine, and

release the electrical power still charged in the Power supply unit Capacitors before servicing

the machine.

Refer to Question No.3 (previous page) for discharging the electrical power charged in the

Capacitors.

* Make sure to disable the machine movement by activating the Safety Switch (the front door

safety switches) if you are not running the machine during the explanation.

QUESTION 5 : What is the Paper Skew adjustment procedure ?

ANSWER: The basic paper skew adjustment is in the Image Adjustment chapter of the ComColor

technical manual

Refer to the pages 11B-20 through 11B-25 for the following two adjustments.

* Transfer Belt Direction Adjustment (Test Mode No. 421)

* Registration Roller Direction Adjustment (Test Mode No. 422)

Sometimes simply leveling the machine solves the problem, and of course the two mechanical

adjustments given above (which are included in the Image Adjustment) are to be made after

confirming that the machine is correctly leveled.

QUESTION 6 : What may cause the Optional FU Paper Ejection Unit to lock (lock) after replacing it ?

ANSWER: hen both the Paper elevation motor and Optional FU paper

at same time, the screws may get mixed up.

When wrong screw is used for mounting the Optional FU paper ejection motor, one of the screw

will lock on the gear which drives the Optional FU paper ejection unit.

In many cases, large mechanical sound (abnormal sound) will be heard, and the paper will jam

after coming out through the BP area (printing area).

The ComColor machines with machine f rmware prior to SNALL Ver.6.09 do not have the test mode No.1832

nor error message X72-1938-0 available.

Test mode No. 1832 has three setting selections, 0, 1, and 2.

When the machine is upgraded to f rmware SNALL Ver.6.09, the default setting of this test mode is 0.

In order for error message X72-1938-0 to come out, the setting on this test mode must be set to 2.

Test mode No.1832 has three selection in its setting (i.e. 0, 1 and 2).

Following are the brief explanation for each setting.

Setting 0:

In this default setting of 0, what the machine does when paper jam the error message the

machine indicates is equivalent to the machine f rmware

where test mode No.1832 not available.

Setting 1:

The machine automatically ejects the jammed in the shelf (tray) under the Face-Down

paper receiving tray. which cannot be ejected out, will remain in the machine.

4) Re: Test Mode No. 1832 setting 0 - detailed explanation.

Setting 0 is the default setting for test mode No.1832.

When selected to 0, the machine action and error display code, when paper jam , is equivalent to the

ComColor machines with machine f rmware SNALL Ver.6.09

1. The machine displays the paper jam message and stops.

2. The operator takes out the jammed paper out from the machine.

3. Closing the machine door resets the jam message (may have to press <Refresh> button on panel.

4. If all the jammed removed, the machine shows the renewed jam message.

5. Remove the remaining jammed paper, close the door, press the <Refresh> button if needed.

6. The machine continues to print the jammed pages and completes the printing job.

The 4th sheet jammed and fell onto the paper receiving tray . The 5th sheet is stuck (jammed) at the Face-Down paper ejection unit.

Pressing the Error button switches the panel display to the next.

The d isp lay shows the paper jammed area. Remove the jammed papers and close the door.If needed, press the Refresh button.

If the machine still detects jammed paper, the jam description display appears aga in . Remove the jammed paper and close the door.If needed, press the Refresh button.

The mach ine checks i t s own condition.

If no other jammed paper is found, the display switches to Active job list and prepares to print.

The page, which caused the jam, may settle down on the paper receiving tray and sometimes you may

think that is not included in the jammed pages. Unless you check the printed results, you may end up with

pages.

QUESTION 8 : What is the paper receiving capacity of the FaceDown paper receiving tray ?

ANSWER: The following paper receiving capacity is the out-of-box default setting.

(1) Face Down Paper Receiving Tray ................... Approx. 500 sheets (depends on paper thickness). (The standard FD paper receiving tray)

(2) Optional Face Down Paper Receiving Tray..... Approx. 500 sheets (depends on paper thickness). < Ledger / A3 / Legal / A4 / Letter / B 5 / Letter(Landscape) / A4(Landscape) / B5(Landscape) / A5(Landscape) >

(3) Optional Face Down Paper Receiving Tray..... Approx. 100 sheets (depends on paper thickness). < Custom size width under 182 mm / Customs size width 182 mm and wider / Statement / A5 / B6 / A6 >

The reason for approx. 100 sheets maximum for above narrow paper sizes is to prevent papers from unpiling and falling off the tray.

If needing to increase the paper receiving amount to approx. 500 sheets for above (3) listed papers, the parameter setting on Test Mode No. 3733 needs to be changed. But remember that the narrow papers such as A5, B6, A6, etc.

tends to unpile easily.

Custom size papers with width 182 mm and wider are excluded from this Test Mode No. 3733 to protect the tray

elevator motor from overload current, so this Test Mode No. 3733 may not be of so much use unless running set paper

ANSWER: No, ComColor models CC7010 and CC3010 have only one A4 size CIS on the Side registration

unit. These are the machines with no Internal paper feed tray.

All other ComColor models have two A4 size CIS on the Side registration unit.

The CIS adjustment procedure is given on the ComColor technical manual.

QUESTION 11 : What does CIS stands for ?

ANSWER: The word CIS stands for Contact Image Sensor. The CIS on ComColor is used on the Side

registration unit as scanner to detect the width of the printing papers.

QUESTION 15 : Why don't Test Modes BP UP (TM#2405) & BP DOWN (TM#2407)

operate ?

ANSWER: There are three (3) test modes for BP Unit elevation.

Test Mode No. 2405 BP Elevator Motor UP

Test Mode No. 2406 BP Elevator Motor Maintenance Position

Test Mode No. 2407 BP Elevator Motor Down

These three test modes are enabled only when the Ink Pan is at the storage position.

These test modes are disabled when the Ink Pan is at the Pause position or On-belt position.

Note:

1) Test Mode No. 2406 BP Elevator Motor Maintenance Position is enabled when going up

from BP On-belt position. It is disabled when the BP is already at UP position (printing

position).

2) Test Mode No. 2405 BP Elevator Motor Up is enabled when going up from BP On-belt position.

It is disabled when the BP is at Maintenance position.

QUESTION 19 : Why does Test Mode No. 0433 <Image Elongation Adjustment> ends in error on the

ComColor models 3050 and 3010 ?

ANSWER: There was a program bug in the machine firmware program.

This is debugged on the new machine firmware package version No. SNALL Ver. 7.16.3

From this new firmware, the Test Mode No.0433 <Image Elongation Adjustment> will end

correctly on the ComColor models 3050 and 3010.

QUESTION 20 : At what timing do the Ink Supply Valves open and close ?

ANSWER: The Ink supply valves open only when the Ink level sensors on both the Pressurized ink tank

and Negative pressure ink tanks are not detecting the ink for each color.

If either one of the Ink level sensors on the Pressurized ink tank or Negative ink tank is detecting

the ink, the Ink supply valve for that color does not open.

This is why you would hear the Ink supply valves go ON and OFF and ON and OFF repeatedly

when the machine is filling the ink into the machine during the machine installation or when

refilling the ink in the machine at powering ON after setting the parameter to [1] on Test Mode

No. 2711 <Head Replacement Mode>.

QUESTION 21 : Can 1,000 milliliter Ink Cartridges coexist in a machine with 500 milliliter Ink

Cartridges ?

ANSWER: Yes, 1,000 milliliter ink cartridges can coexist with 500 milliliter ink cartridges in one same

machine.

For instance, the Black ink cartridge can be 1,000 milliliter type while the Cyan, Magenta and

Yellow ink cartridge in the same machine can be 500 milliliter ink cartridges, etc.

QUESTION 18 : What type of paper should be used in Auto Image Adjustment ?

ANSWER: Using Matte Paper is recommended.

Some Matte Papers are made for water-based ink. ComColor is oil-based.

Matte Papers for water-based ink will not work .

Old spoiled Matte Paper will not work .

Alternative paper to the Matte Paper is a good quality pure white normal paper with smooth

surface with no stains or no grain showing.

Since the color profile is not the issue in Image adjustment, it is to

which the customer uses the most

What is important is that the paper is pure white and the ink gets on the paper

or smearing. The scanner must be able to scan the printed image correctly.

ANSWER: Yes, the model HC Scissor clips (green in color) can be used on the ComColor air tubes and ink

drainage tubes (the thin drain tubes for each color located behind the Bellows unit).

But they cannot be used on the ComColor ink flow tubes.

The ComColor ink flow tubes are very tough and stiff. The HC Scissor clips cannot clip these

stiff ComColor ink flow tubes correctly. These Scissor clips will snap open easily from the ink

flow tubes and you will end up with messy machine and floor.

Never use the HC Scissor clips (green in color) on the ComColor ink flow tubes.

QUESTION 23 : From which ink tank, Pressurized Ink Tank or Negative Pressure Ink Tank, is the ink

supplied to clean the Heads in head cleaning ?

ANSWER: The ink from both the Pressurized Ink Tank and Negative Pressure Ink Tank are pushed into the

Print head for the head cleaning.

Both the Pressurized ink tank air valve and Negative pressure ink tank air valve are closed when

the Bellows pushed out the air into the Negative pressure ink tank for the head cleaning.

The ink in the Negative ink tank is pushed out in two directions.

One direction is direct to the Print heads.

The other is to the Pressurized ink tank though the one-way-pump, located at the bottom of the

Negative pressure ink tank, and up the Ink Tower.

With the air valve for the Pressurized ink tank closed, the ink from the Negative pressure ink

tank pushes the ink in the Pressurized ink tank to the print heads.

So the ink from both the Negative pressure ink tank and Pressurized ink tank is dripped from the

Print heads in Print Head Cleaning.

QUESTION 24 : How can we tell when the Test Mode No. 2711 ended ?

ANSWER: Before the machine firmware package version SNALL 7.16.3, the only way to confirm that Test

Mode No. 2711 ended is by watching the machine movement after turning ON the machine power

when the machine power was previously turned OFF with the Test Mode No. 2711 parameter set

to [1].

After filling the ink flow system with the ink, the machine automatically made a Head Cleaning

action.

Then the machine made the initial movement and brought the BP unit to the printing position,

which is the machine idle position.

This is when the Test Mode No. 2711 ended.

You are not to touch the Operation Panel until the machine came to this idle position.

But from machine firmware package version SNALL 7.16.3, following panel messages tells you

when the Test Mode No. 2711 ended.

When this display ends, the Test Mode

No. 2711 has ended.

QUESTION 25 : How is the Meniscus made on the print heads ?

ANSWER: The Meniscus on the Print head nozzles are made by following two different ways, depending on

the machine state.

1) Machine powered OFF or machine power ON with no ink movement.

In this condition, the Meniscus is made by the difference in the height between the Print head

and Negative pressure ink tank.

The ink from the Print head tries to flow down into the Negative pressure ink tank when the

machine power is OFF or when the power is ON but the ink is not making any movement.

During this machine state, the Air valve for the Negative pressure ink tank is OPEN.

The air tries to escape from the Negative pressure ink tank and pull the ink down from the

Print heads. The small diameter Print head nozzles and due also to the viscosity of the ink,

the ink hesitates to fall down through the tube into the Negative pressure ink tank.

With the surface tension the ink makes Meniscus on each Print head nozzle.

The Meniscus prevents ink from dripping from the Print head.

If a large shock is given on the machine or directly to the Print head, the Meniscus break and

the ink will keep dripping from the Print head.

The only way to correct the broken Meniscus is to turn ON the machine power and perform

the Head Cleaning either by the User Mode or Serviceman Test Mode.

2) Machine power is ON and the machine is either Printing or Circulating ink (ink is flowing).

When the ink is flowing in the ink flow system, either in printing operation or in ink circulating

operation, the difference in the height between the Print head and Negative pressure ink tank

is not enough to make the meniscus.

During the printing or in ink circulation, the Bellows Unit hangs in the machine to pull the air

out from the Negative pressure tank.

When the machine power is ON and ink is circulating, the air valve for the Negative ink tank is

closed. If the air is pulled out from the Negative pressure ink tank, that process will pull the

ink down from the Print head. This action is equivalent to increasing the height difference

between the Print head and Negative pressure ink tank. This process assist in Print head

making the Meniscus on its nozzles, even though the ink is flowing inside the Print head.

So, it is the Bellows unit that makes the Meniscus on the Print head nozzles when the ink is

flowing in the ink flow system.

QUESTION 26 : How much Ink is lost in draining the ink out from the Ink Flow System.

ANSWER: In draining the ink out completely from the Ink flow system (Pressurized ink tank, Negative

pressure ink tank and Print head area), approximately 180 milliliters of ink for each color is

required to refill.

Therefore the answer is approximately 180 milliliters Black, 180 milliliters Cyan, 180 milliliters

Magenta and 180 milliliters Yellow.

QUESTION 27 : Is there a Meniscus on the print head nozzle when the machine power is OFF ?

QUESTION 28 : What is the function of Test Mode No. 2711 <Head Replacement Mode> ?

ANSWER: The Test Mode No. 2711 <Head Replacement Mode> has three (3) functions.

1) It opens up both the Negative pressure ink tank air valve and Pressurized ink tank air valve at

the same time to allow the ink to fill both ink tanks in less time.

When both ink tanks are empty, the ink flowing down from the Ink cartridge is allowed

instantly to fill the Ink Tower to the point just under the height of where the Ink detection

sensor is located.

<Keep in mind that the one-way-type Ink pump on the Negative pressure ink tank uses thin rubber

pistons which gives away to let the ink go through even though it is not pumping.>

The air valves for both tanks are open until the Ink level sensors on both the Negative

pressure ink tank and Pressurized ink tank detect the ink.

Once the ink level is detected by both ink tanks at the same time (the ink flow system is

filled), the Air valve for the Negative pressure ink tank is closed and that for the

Pressurized ink tank stays open.

From thereafter, only either one of the air valves opens at a time.

Which one opens depends on the machine condition.

2) The timer to detect empty ink cartridge is made longer, so the machine does not display the

[Ink Cartridge Empty] error message while the Ink cartridge is filling the Negative pressure

ink tank and Pressurized ink tank.

3) The machine does not make the initial movement on the Ink pan until the Head cleaning is

made on the Print heads automatically at the very end of the Test Mode No2711.

This is to prevent the BP Belt from receiving dripping ink from the Print heads, as the

Meniscus does not exist on the Print heads when the Print heads are replaced or when the

Ink is drained out from the machine.

ANSWER: The ink circulates in following four (4) conditions.

1) When the ink temperature is under 25 degrees Celsius, the machine circulates the ink with

the Heaters in the ink tower ON until the ink temperature goes up to 25 degrees Celsius.

2) When the ink temperature goes up too high, the ink is circulated to cool its temperature by

the Cooling fans on the ink tower.

3) Using Test Mode No. 2452 <Ink Circulation Action> compulsively circulates the ink and

completes the test mode automatically in approximately 10 minutes.

This test mode function is for a serviceman to circulate the ink to remove tiny air bubbles in

the ink tubes and also to trap small foreign objects in the Filter (the filter in the Pressurized

ink tank), when the ink is refilled in the machine during the machine installation or when

refilling the ink after draining the ink flow system.

4) ometimes circulates ink regardless of the ink temperature.

After certain amount of printing job is finished, the machine circulates ink depending on

how much new ink is filled into the Negative pressure ink tank from the Ink cartridge, to

stabilize (to remove the air bubbles foreign objects from the ink tube) the ink condition.

Sometimes the ink is circulated after the Head cleaning , etc. to stabilize

QUESTION 34 : When is the timing to release the Scissor Clamps from the air tubes after replacing

any one of the Negative pressure ink tanks or Positive pressure ink tanks ?

ANSWER: The Scissor Clamps should be released as soon as the machine power is turned back ON and

when the Ink pump on the bottom of the Negative pressure ink tank starts to pump the ink.

If the Scissor Clamp is released before the Ink pump starts to operate, the ink from the Print

head will come down into the Negative pressure ink tank and overflows the Negative pressure

ink tank.

In the worst case, the colors mix and contaminated ink goes into the ink circulation system.

NOTE:

The above does not apply after all the ink (4 colors) are drained out from the ink flow system.

QUESTION 36 : Why do the Print Head area become empty when only draining the ink

out from the Pressurized ink tank ?

ANSWER: When draining the ink from the Positive pressure ink tank, the air valve for the Pressurized ink

tank is opened.

When the air valve is opened, the air entering into the Pressurized ink tank goes into the ink tube

which leads to the Print heads.

The ink from the Print head goes down into the Negative pressure ink tank.

The Air valve for the Negative pressure ink tank is closed, therefore the Negative pressure ink

tank does not overflow.

The ink from the Print head goes into the Negative ink tank and then the same amount of ink

goes out from the Negative ink tank through the one-way-pump thin rubber pistons and drained

out from the small diameter ink drain tube (behind the Bellows unit) from which the Pressurised

ink tank ink drains out.

To prevent ink from the Print head area from draining, place a Scissor clip firmly on the ink

tube leading from the Pressurized ink tank to the Print head.

QUESTION 37 : Why is it recommended that we drain the ink one color at a time and not 4 colors

together when we drain all the ink out from the ink system ?

ANSWER: Draining all 4 colors at same time will flood the Common air chamber of the Negative pressure

ink tank with 4 color inks.

The 4 colors will mix in the Common air chamber, becoming blackish in color.

The mixed color ink will flow back into the Negative pressure ink tank, which in turn will end up

in Print heads.

NOTE:

The ink should be drained one color at a time.

QUESTION 38 : Why is there no open air valve for the Ink Cartridge to supply ink into the negative

ink tank ?

ANSWER: Unlike model which use hard moulded plastic ink cartridge, the ComColor

ink cartridge uses soft plastic bag.

The ComColor soft plastic ink bags collapse the amount ink .

Therefore, the ComColor ink cartridge does not need to take in the air to supply ink.

ANSWER: It is very rare, but due to the setting of the PC, placing an IP Address on IS900C is disabled.

Since it is due to the setting of the PC , it may be difficult to trouble shoot.
