The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2012/13 year were agreed at the general meeting in March 2012 and are as follows:
Interstate: $100 (Seniors card - $95) ● Single: $110 (Seniors card - $100) Joint/family: $115 - (Seniors card - $100)
(All fees includes affiliation and Insurance: $42) A trip fee of $10 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to the October club magazine and my president’s
report. I can’t believe that it is a month since Angela and I were visiting her family in Northern Ireland. Well, that
seems like a lifetime ago as we haven’t really stopped since we got back. Flying back into Melbourne from Singapore on
the morning of the September general meeting, I am not
sure that I can actually remember it, let alone chairing it.
While I spoke glowingly about a rental vehicle I had in Northern Ireland I am now sure that Avis was just lulling me into a false
sense of security, having then supplied a Fiat 500 for our quick trip around the south of England. It was quite an experience driving this vehicle,
especially when merging into fast moving traffic on England’s various
motorways. Anyway, we survived this glorified roller skate and made it safely back to Singapore in time for the city’s grand prix. While we saw the track
impressively lit up on the Friday evening that was as close as we came to it. There was no chance of attending the event given that all general admission
tickets had sold out before we arrived. We did get to meet up with Jessica for
a quick, albeit expensive, drink at Raffles on the Saturday afternoon before she headed off to the practice and qualifying sessions while we headed off to
see more of Singapore.
Shortly after our return we had the Leisurefest show where Dale and I represented the club on the association’s stand. While there I met a few
potential club members who I hope will make it along to the club in the near
future. I also met a retired couple who had been visitors to a meeting last year, just after they had purchased their new Forester. They had recently
returned from a trip through central Australia which isn’t too bad for a couple with no four wheel drive experience. The only modification on the Forester
was one of Dave’s sump guards and the “only” damage they had was a one
inch hole in their radiator. Hopefully we will see them at another meeting where they can recount their experiences for us.
After Leisurefest we had the club trip to Maldon. Thanks to the lack of a dog
sitter for our two dogs, Angela and I could only make it up for the Saturday
which was great fun anyway. Despite some very cryptic aspects of the navigation run Angela and I were lucky enough to come away with a win for
the day. After a pleasant meal at one of the local pubs, followed by a quick coffee back at Martin and Dot’s, Angela and I left the rest of the club

members to settle in for the night while we headed home. Dot also headed
back to Melbourne with us to attend a work commitment on the Sunday.
A couple of days before the Maldon trip I was contacted by Robert Pepper, author of the 4WD Handbook, to ask if any member had experience with the
new Subaru EyeSight technology. He was in the middle of an extended test
drive of a new Outback with this feature in it. While not being able to help in that regard, I did offer to put him in touch with Jessica who would be able to
provide input on how a standard vehicle behaves in the bush.
While chatting with Robert he also mentioned that he was running a training session for potential driver trainers and, given that Jessica was working
towards becoming a club instructor, she would be welcome to attend.
Fortunately she was able to and enjoyed it so much that she will be attending the next one as well. I also invited Robert and his family to the Maldon event
which he accepted. This put a bit of pressure on Martin, given that Robert has also written a book on GPS navigation and has been responsible for the three
quarter section of the Pajero navigation challenge. It was a great pleasure
having Robert, his wife Muriel and their two daughters attend the navigation run and dinner, before they headed home early as well, so that Robert could
take the Outback for a quick run to the Otways on the Sunday.
While at dinner Robert came up with an idea of running a combined proficiency and advanced driving class for the club. This would cover the
basic requirements of the proficiency course, for those who have not done it,
while offering something more advanced for those who have. I hope to see a good attendance for this event, not only to minimize the cost, but to make
the most of a great opportunity. I will be looking for expressions of interest for this course in the coming months, when I can lock in a date for it.
Speaking of looking forward, we have announced a Simpson Desert trip for mid-2013. If you have a spare three weeks, in around May next year, please
let me know. Planning will commence shortly so you will need to get in early to reserve a place on this limited, difficult trip.
Anyway that’s enough from me for this month. Take care of yourself out there, on the road or in the bush, and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

A reminder that we are no longer sending out hard copies of the magazine
before the general meetings to the majority of members. The exceptions are
those who have not registered an email address with the club. Everyone else will receive an electronic link to the magazine on-line and can collect their
magazines at the meeting or print them using the files provided in the email.

PHOTO COMPETITION
JUDGING AT OUR NOVEMBER MEETING
At our November meeting (the last meeting for the year), we will be running our Photographic Competition!
It’s been a good success in previous years, so we’re looking for the club’s brilliant photographers to submit their best work in a range of
categories: ● Best portrait photo (photo of a person)
● Best Subaru action shot
● Best recovery shot
● Best group photo
● Funniest photo
● Best landscape/nature scene
● Best close-up nature shot (flowers, animals, etc.)
All photographs submitted must have been taken in the last two years
(2011 & 2012) at a club event. Any photographs that have won a prize previously are not eligible.
There is a limit of one photo per person, per category (however, family
membership allows for each member to submit their ‘best photo’ but
they must have taken the photo themselves).
All photos must be entered electronically so please email them to [email protected]. We request all entries to be in a couple
of days prior to the November meeting to ensure we can collate the
presentation.
So, rifle through your collection of club event photos from the last two years and send them to us.
Members in attendance at the meeting will be able to vote for the winner in each category – come along, see a display of the club’s events
over the last two years and VOTE for the best photos!

The Grampians are an outstanding geological feature in western Victoria. This trip will aim to traverse the ranges so is rated at medium as some tracks can be a bit scrabbly. Discussions are being had with Parks Victoria so there may be access to some MVO tracks as well.

Cairns is the only place in the world to view the total solar eclipse on November 14 2012 from land. Allow about a week before and a week after the eclipse for travel and some touring in the area. If you would like more information on the eclipse itself, go to www.eclipse2012.org.au
The eclipse is due at about 6.45am (yes, am) and will be in an area that is subject to frequent cloud cover at that time of year, so there may in fact be nothing to 'see' - apart from the darkness, that is. Because of this, the trip is still in the concept stage, and may not go ahead. Please let me know if you are interested.

This year, the Christmas Party will be held in the Steiglitz Historic Park. Steiglitz is almost a ghost town today but in the 1860s and 1890s it was a busy goldmining township with hotels, shops, churches and a population of over 1,000.
We will meet at the Bert Boardman Recreation Park on the Sunday for a BBQ lunch to celebrate another successful year for the club.

The Optional Part:
There are plenty of great easy tracks to explore throughout the adjacent Brisbane Ranges National Park. It’s a beautiful park set in a low range of mountains dissected by rock gullies.
Make a weekend out of the Christmas Party! We’ll meet in Bacchus Marsh for lunch on the Saturday, head to the park and drive a range of easy tracks exploring various parts of the Park. We’ll then loop around and setup camp at Boar Gully Camping Area. It’ll no doubt be a slow Sunday morning with a leisurely drive south to the Christmas Party.

When you are driving up a hill it is fairly easy to choose the right gear. If the gear you choose is too high then the engine will labour, and at worst stall. If the gear is too low, it will take forever to get to the top.
But what about downhill? If the gear you choose is too high then you run the risk of overheating the brakes with catastrophic consequences. If you have recently driven up the slope then the highest gear you should choose is the one you used to get up the hill.
If you are not confident then choose a lower gear - even first gear. If you have not driven up the slope and you are still not sure, then there is nothing wrong with turning around and going back the way you came. If it takes too long, well, it is better than too quick.

LEONGATHA NIGHT NAVIGATION RUN

The Leongatha Night Navigation run had a bit of a rocky start, and that began a week before the night. On Saturday the 17th, a week before the trip, I called all of the members on the trip intention form to re-confirm their participation. My first phone call was to Stephen, only to find out that, whilst his car was close to the start point, it was going no-where. His Forester was stuck in Wonthaggi, less than 30 kilometres from Leongatha, with a collapsed clutch after visiting some relatives. Alas, so close, yet for far.
Checking the original tracks after confirming the line up, I discovered that due to the recent storms, 90% of these were un-passable. Bugger!
So on the Saturday, the day of the trip, I went out in “Betsy” (my white ’84 Gen 2 Leone) to locate some better tracks. I found them north-east of Mirboo North, in an area defined by the main road to Boolarra and the Boolarra-Mirboo Nth Rail Trail.
This small area yielded a couple of good spots to test drivers, rating most of the course easy, with a couple of medium sections that would be great to have fun on. These also included chicken tracks that also allowed those on the easy by-pass track great views of the progress of those on the medium-difficult section. I will be running a daylight trip through this area at a later date.
During the checks, I received a phone call from Michael H. He was in such high demand from clients in the USA that he was unable to attend.
Not long after this I decided to check out one more track before heading home to write up some trip instructions. Big mistake!

Betsy got completely stuck, with 2 wheels off the ground. And as luck would have it, I’d just gone out of the range of the nearest tower. After walking out to the main track again, I was finally able to contact Peter Mynard for a rescue. Before Peter could get to me, a couple of guys out for a 4WD day trip came by and were able to tow Betsy clear. I then had to wait for Peter (due to the fickle mobile phone reception) to let him know that I was alright. Once I’d caught up with him and Katie, I headed for home, running just a little behind schedule.
I finally arrived home to find that Les, Elaine and Jamie had already arrived. Martin turned up not long after. Realising the t i m e , t h e decision was made to turn the trip into a simple trip rather than a nav run.
We soon toddled off to the McCartin Hotel for dinner, where the desert menu was very much a major topic over dinner. Elaine’s
chocolate sundae delight provided much entertainment, as did the different flavours of ice-cream which, as Fabio once proclaimed “I can’t believe it’s not...”

7.30pm, Betsy l e a d i n g , w i t h Suboo, then the Landcruiser and Martin’s Forester taking up the tail-end. We headed through Mirboo North, towards B o o la r ra . W e turned off onto Old Dar l imur la Rd Track and headed t h rou gh lo ca l bushland, emerging a few kilometres later into the plantation area.
We turned left down Slaughteryard Track, and then turned right at Railway Track. This track shadows the former Morwell-Mirboo Nth Railway.
Approximately 2kms down Railway Track the track becomes less maintained and several moderate sized mud holes allow for some muddy fun. Emerging back on the Old Dralimula Rd Track we turned right and then immediately left onto (un-named) Track. Following this through the cleared plantations we turned right up Bessy Track, and then right again onto Romey Track.
The spoon drains provided quite a bumpy ride. At the intersection of Romey and Ellis Tracks Kerry and I left the others to follow Ellis Track, this being the easy track around, whilst the rest followed Romey Track, which lead to the medium-hard hill climb. On the easy by-pass track, Kerry and I were able to stop and watch as first Jamie, then Les, flew down the dip and then up the hill. Martin then gave it a go, and promptly got un-stuck on the first spoon drain on the climb. It was a hole that made the

run up very difficult to gain any traction over the drain. After filling the hole with some timber [couldn’t find any, just revved it - MF], Martin successfully navigated the ruts and remaining spoon drains to reach the top.
We then regrouped and followed Sargent Track and then Blair Track through the heart of the cleared plantat ions, following back towards the Boolarra-Mirboo Nth Road.
We finished the night back in Mirboo North at
around 9.30pm, discussing the night before bidding a goodnight to Les, Elaine and Jamie as they for home. Martin followed Kerry and I back to Kooinda, from which Martin then departed for home.

Nigel Lau – Extreme Fuel Treatment A very informative talk was given on a fuel treatment that can be used with both petrol and diesel fuel. The treatment affects the fuel by allowing to burn more

efficiently and so, allowing it to generate more power for less octane. A fuel saving of about 25% is achievable.

Club clothing can be ordered “ad hoc” and picked up without delivery charge. Where does the club want to take resources?
Arrange discount deals at sponsors? Arrange special purchase deals? Advise members of special discounts on offer? Use
email to advise members of such offers. Also, club members are able to advise Dale of deals they see and, in turn, he can inform members.
Club port – do we pursue sourcing some more? With current pricing of alcohol, it is not worth pursuing.

The club needs a few people to step forward to organise/lead trips. The idea of a guest trip leader was put forward – someone in 4WD Victoria, a former member or an inactive current member. Another suggestion was a joint trip with another 4WD club. Simpson Desert trip – will need a weekend shake-down trip beforehand

Supper – need to have a larger and more diverse supply of biscuits for supper so that there is enough to go around at a meeting.
Door prizes – should be limited to members only. Also, need to specify the prizes – particularly making any prize from a presentation being made the first prize.

7. General Business Committee meeting finishing times
A time needs to be set to give some certainty and help push along a meeting. However, enough time needs to be allowed for discussion on general business.
Reports by committee members need to be more by exception than covering everything.
Committee agreed to target a 9:30pm finish with formal reports completed by 9pm.
Fundraising/sponsorship Topic has not been revisited since the April meeting. This will be
discussed at next month’s meeting. Leisurefest
One or members will be able to help on the weekend to man the 4WD Victoria stand.
The 4WD Victoria ticket discount offer was not very member friendly since it was only made with one week’s notice, and required at least 10 members to get the discount.

Seasonal Road Closure Openings in Forests and Parks
The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Parks Victoria are preparing to open Seasonal Road Closures for Cup Weekend, starting 3rd of November 2012. And look forward to welcoming visitors back to those areas of the States forests and parks which are closed to vehicles over the wetter months.
This winter and spring has brought significant rainfall in most parts of Victoria, and a series of extreme wind storm events which have caused greater than average tree fall, particularly in areas of the North East and Gippsland.
The agencies have been working together to reopen and make safe as many tracks as possible, with a focus on tracks which provide strategic fire access and popular 4WD routes. This has been achieved through use of heavy machinery, hand crews and volunteers from Four Wheel Drive Victoria. While the vast majority of tracks currently under closure will open for Cup Weekend, there are some that will remain temporarily closed due to tree fall, land slips or severe track surface damage. DSE and Parks Victoria will continue to work on clearing debris and repairing damage on those particular tracks to have them open as soon as conditions and resources allow.
There are also a number of tracks in the Great Otway National Park that will remain closed beyond Cup Weekend due to track damage and wet conditions. The conditions are such that they are likely to cause significant safety issues for drivers and additional damage to track surfaces. Parks Victoria have been working closely with local 4WD clubs in the area to identify the tracks that are proposed to remain closed for an extended period.
DSE and Parks Victoria are urging drivers to respect temporary closures that may remain in place beyond the opening weekend due to storm, flood or other impacts. Visitors are encouraged to use the information sources referred to below to obtain the most up to date information on access into forest and park areas before they travel.
