OVERVIEWStudyMate Class helps students master the basics ofcourse material through web-based learning activities, self-assessments and games.

The activities, such as ash cards and crosswords, are basedon items entered by students or the instructor. Students thenpractice with the activities that appeal to them, and can evenreview and edit items created by classmates. StudyMateClass integrates seamlessly with Blackboard courses for easyinstructor facilitation and grading.

StudyMate Class also integrates with the Respondus TestBank Network, allowing instructors to quickly and easilycreate learning activities with items from thousands of o cialpublisher test banks.

CREATING A STUDYMATE CLASS PROJECTOnly instructors can create a new StudyMate Class project (orinstance). To do so, follow these steps:1. Login as the instructor, access the desired course and select

the Content area.2. Make sure that the Edit Mode is ON, to be able to add

content.3. Click on More and select Add StudyMate Class.4. On the Add StudyMate Class screen, enter the icon title,

MOBILEStudyMate Class can be used on mobile devices, such as theiPhone, iPad, iPod touch, BlackBerry, Palm Pre, Android, andmore.iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can download the freeStudyMate LMS Edition app from Apple App Store tosynchronize StudyMate Class projects with their onlinecourses and work with learning activities offl ine.Additionally, StudyMate Class can be used with mobile devices

by accessing the Blackboard course from the devices browser. The device will be detected and learning activities displayed inthe proper size and format.

STUDENT ROLLOUTThe following tips will help with a successful rollout ofStudyMate Class to students.

A 5-minute demonstration during class goes a long wayto ge ing students running with StudyMate Class. As afollow-up, provide speci c instructions to students forge ing started, such as the rollout materials available fromthe Respondus web site.

For each project, provide clear guidelines as to how manyquestions and items each student or group should contribute. This helps avoid both overzealous and unengaged students.

Perhaps the best way to engage students in the learningprocess is to make the task gradable. Grading features areavailable within StudyMate Class and the grades will passdirectly to the Blackboard Gradebook or Grade Center.

Tell students that a certain number of the multiple choicequestions they create will be used on the test. This encouragesstudents to create quality questions and to review thematerials created by other students.

Emphasize to students the importance of reviewing itemspreviously entered by classmates. Each item and questionentered should be fully unique.

To introduce students to StudyMate Class, create a practiceproject where students are required to login and enter itemsusing each of the three templates. Pick a fun topic (perhapson a subject ma er unrelated to the course) and remindstudents that their entries should be unique.

The pages that follow provide several distinct approaches for

integrating StudyMate Class into a class.4

Overview StudyMate Class lets an entire class participate in one, large study group. Even students who are shy or dontknow others in the class will get involved. But whatmakes StudyMate Class so powerful is that students learnthroughout the entire process, not just when they viewthe activities and games. They learn when they contributenew material to the project and when they edit facts orsample questions created by other students. Even instructorscan join the action by contributing new items or by editingcontributions by students.

Structure & Guidelines To keep a class-wide study group manageable, its best tolimit the data sources that students can use for new items. For example, you may want to require that new items bederived from only the textbook or lecture. Sometimes itshelpful to create a separate StudyMate Class project foreach data source (ie. one based on material from the text-book, another based on lectures). Mixing data sources canbe ne too, but will depend on the size of the class, thetype of material being covered, and the gradingapproach being used, among other factors.

Consider using the following data sources for a StudyMateClass project:

Textbooks - Have students enter facts, glossary termsand/or multiple choice questions based on specicchapters in the textbook.

Supplemental Readings, Homework or Labs - This issimilar to the above approach, but uses supplementalreadings, homework or lab projects as the sourcematerial.

Class Lecture - Have students enter facts and terms/ denitions from lecture. You might also have themcreate sample multiple choice questions.

Research Projects - If research projects or papers arewritten for the class, have students enter key facts andconcepts from their research.

Tip: If more than one data source is used for a StudyMateClass project, consider adding a Topic that representseach source (eg. a topic named Textbook and anothernamed Lecture). This makes it easier to organize newitems and to track the sources of the data. Be sure to tellstudents to select the appropriate topic when they enternew items.

Participation & GradingBy grading the StudyMate Class projects, students willhave an additional incentive to participate. A participationgrade can be derived from the statistics provided on theGrade tab, such as the number of items contributed/editedby the student and the number of Flash activities viewedby the student. The actual items created by each studentcan also be viewed from the Grade tab by clicking thestudent name.

Instructor Setup1) Create a New Project

To create a new project, see Creating a StudyMateClass Project in the Quick Start Guide.

    2) Create a Topic ListConsider creating a Topic List so that items createdby students can be assigned to a topic. A Topic Listmight be organized by the source of data (Textbook,Lecture, etc.), by specic subjects (Mitosis, Nucleus,Chromosomes, etc.), by the course outline (Chapter 1,Chapter 2, etc.), by date (Week 1, Week 2, etc.), orby any parameter the instructor chooses. To create aTopic list, go to the Settings tab, locate the Topic List section, and use the Add Topic feature.

    3) Set the Editing RightsFrom the Settings tab, locate the Editing Rights section. To allow students to edit each others entries, selectEveryone in the course can edit each others items .(Users can view a history of the edits, so this discouragesvandalism.) Alternatively, to prevent students fromediting or correcting entries by other students, selectOnly the original author can edit their items . Thesettings for Editing Rights can be changed at any time, including the ability to prevent students from modifyingan item once the instructor has edited it.

    4) Enable GradingTo enable grading of the project, select the Settings tab, locate the Grading section, select Enable grading , andenter a Grade Book column title. Remember to clickSave Changes .

Tips & Suggestions For best results, provide students a minimum and

maximum number of items they should contribute tothe project and the number of items to create with eachtemplate (eg. 10 Fact , 10 Term/Defnition , 5 MultipleChoice ). You dont want overachieving students to enterhundreds of items before other students get started, nordo you want to foster minimal participation by settingtoo low of a target.

S tudents need to understand the importance ofreviewing existing items in a project before enteringnew items. Each item should be fully unique so that theproject doesnt get lled with duplicate or similar items.

New items are placed at the end of the project list, soits easy to tell which ones were created. I n certain situations, instructors may want students to

provide source information (eg. Textbook, p24) for eachitem entered. With the Term/Defnition template, tellstudents to place the source information at the end ofthe Denition not the Term. For Multiple Choice questions, the source information should be placed atthe end of the question wording, not the answer choices.

I f Topics are created by the instructor, studentsshould be reminded to select a topic whenever theyenter a new item.

    6

OverviewDivide the class into teams or groups. Each team isresponsible for contributing content to a StudyMate Classproject according to the assigned topic. The topics mightoriginate from sources such as:

Textbook chapters - Assign each team a chapter fromthe textbook where teams are responsible for creatingitems and questions based on that chapter. Providespecic guidance as to what is required. For example,if the textbook contains End of Chapter glossary terms, you might indicate that each term should be enteredusing the Term/Defnition template in StudyMate Class. You might also require teams to create 20 samplequestions using the Multiple Choice template.

Lecture materials - Each team is responsible for oneweek of lecture. Have students use the Fact templateto enter 20-30 of the most important facts from lecture. You may also require each team to create a set of Term/ Defnition items based on the same materials, as well asMultiple Choice questions that can be used to preparefor the test.

Special Projects - If students do group researchprojects in the course, StudyMate Class is a great wayfor classmates to teach each other about their research.Have each group use the Fact template to provide thebasic facts about the topic. The Term/Defnition templatecan then be used to create a parallel set of materials, allowing for deeper learning of the same content. Finally, have each group create a set of Multiple Choice questions that are based on the same materials coveredwith the Fact and Term/Defnition templates. This is apedagogically effective way for classmates to present

new material to others.Instructor Setup1) Create a New Project

To create a new project, see Creating a StudyMateClass Project in the Quick Start Guide.

    2) Create a Topic ListCreate a Topic for each team. To do this, go to theSettings tab, locate the Topic List section, and use theAdd Topic feature. The topic names should reect thetype of project. For example, if each team has been

assigned one chapter from the textbook, the topicsmight be named Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and so on.If the project is based on lectures, try topics like Week1, Week 2, etc. If teams are doing unique researchprojects, consider using subject-matter names, likeMitosis and Nucleus. Or, the topics might simply

be the team names like Team 1 and Team 2.3) Set the Editing Rights

From the Settings tab, locate the Editing Rights sectionand select Everyone in the course can edit each othersitems. This allows students to edit entries by their teammembers. After the assignment is complete, the instructormay want to change the editing rights to Only theinstructor can edit this project to prevent furtherediting by students and to facilitate grading.

    4) Enable GradingTo enable grading of the team projects, select theSettings tab, locate the Grading section, select Enable

grading , and enter a Grade Book column title.Remember to click Save Changes .

Tips & Suggestions Remind the teams to create items that are based on

key themes of the topic. The goal isnt to stump fellowclassmates with minutia or complex questions.

Tell students that their work will be evaluated as ateam. So teammates should check each others workfor accuracy and make sure their collective work meetsthe criteria of the assignment. (If a Topic List is created, the Search feature allows students to quickly locatethe items created by their teammates.)

For large classes, consider dividing students into teamsbased on their last name. For example, if a students lastname starts with the letters A-D, they are responsible forChapter 1, etc.

An instructor can create a separate StudyMate Classproject for each group and use the Adaptive Releasefeature in Blackboard to assign groups to each project.Once the projects have been graded, they can be madeavailable to everyone in the class so that classmates canaccess self-assessment activities from the View tab.

Overview Instructors may want to create a StudyMate Class projectwhere students cannot make contributions or edits of theirown. Students can then only access the View tab, whichcontains the learning activities and games. If grading is used,it can only be based on the number of activities viewed by

a student.Creating Content There are three ways an instructor can create or importcontent:

Use the standard templates in StudyMate Class to createitems.

E xport a le from StudyMate Author 2.0 (which is aseparate authoring tool) and import it using StudyMateClass. All items from a StudyMate Author 2.0 project canbe imported, except those that contain calculatedquestions or images (these items are automaticallyltered out). From the File menu in StudyMate Author 2.0,select the Export to StudyMate zip option.

E xport multiple choice questions from Respondus(a separate authoring tool) and import them usingStudyMate Class. From the File menu in Respondus, select the Export to StudyMate zip option.

To import items that are in StudyMate zip format, goto the Edit tab in StudyMate Class, locate the Importitems button at the bottom of the screen and follow theinstructions.

Using Publisher Test BanksThe Respondus Test Bank Network contains thousands ofpublisher test banks for the leading text books in highereducation. Instructors who adopt a participating textbookfor their course can access the accompanying test banks, for free, directly from StudyMate Class.

This means that instructors can save substantial amountsof time creating learning materials based on the textbookcontent.

See the Test Bank Network section on p.4 of this guide formore information.

Importing MS Word FilesMS Word les can be imported through the use ofStudyMate Author or Respondus. Both applications allowthe importing of questions or items from MS Word, QTIXML, RTF, and many other formats. Once questions are inStudyMate Author or Respondus, they can be exported toStudyMate zip format and then imported using StudyMateClass (see previous section).

Instructor Setup1) Create a New Project

To create a new project, see Creating a StudyMate ClassProject in the Quick Start Guide.

    2) Set the Editing RightsFrom the Settings tab, locate the Editing Rights sectionand select Only the instructor can edit this project .

    3) Enable GradingTo enable grading, select the Settings tab, locate theGrading section, select Enable grading , and enter aGrade Book column title. Remember to click SaveChanges. For this type of project, also remember thatgrades can only be based on the number of activitiesstudents view (since students cannot create or edit itemsof their own).
