Downtown Baton Rouge is an area rich with history. Digging into the nightlife citizens of Baton Rouge enjoy, it is easy to find college students mixed with young professionals that have fallen in love with the traditional attitude southern Louisiana adopts on living. However, they are also interested in current society that is taking place elsewhere among the nation and world. Like all professionals, the people in the area are passionate about their careers, but when it comes down to where their joys lie, a loyal crowd will always be found. These people never let the importance of strong relationships with family and friends slide, which preludes the concept of Affaire: a restaurant and lounge that takes customers to a place where they can easily communicate to a large group through its mixture of traditional and contemporary design.

In order to accomplish this, Affaire is based upon French design ideas seen in traditional southern Louisiana homes; how-ever, contemporary design elements create a whimsical, romantic, and innovative space. Lounge group seating, tapas din-ner menu, and implementing a brunch menu plays off the social patterns of Louisiana’s citizens. The contemporary elements mixed with traditional French design produce a fantasy-type atmosphere that relates to the customers’ wants, and the overall design of group socialization relates to the customers’ needs.

BATON ROUGECONTEMPORARY ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTER

COMPLETED SPRING 2011501 Government Street in Baton Rouge, LA

Page 9: Student Portfolio

Sustainability is a cultural movement taking shape and changing the way we live. In building a cultural center that increases the knowledge of sustainable practices for the Baton Rouge area, the most important consideration is audience. In order to make an impact on society, the building should attract the correct audience.

In saying this, I have taken a less obvious turn on green design through the building’s aesthetics. Since the purpose of the building is used to educate, impact, and change society, I have made the entire building to accomplish this through its artistic concept. Inspired by the contemporary street art of Banksy, Hyuro, and C215, the center’s concept and presentation is a criti-cal aspect of culture. Like street art, Baton Rouge Cultural Center takes what is real, available, and currently happening in its setting, makes a statement and becomes part of the town’s culture.

The entire building, interior and exterior, follows the process of LEED. Shipping containers to build BRCACC’s frame, LEED approved materials, day lighting, the building and site, and community connectivity were all specially designed to form a functional, sustainable, and aesthetically innovative cultural center for downtown

MOONBOTSTUDIOS

COMPLETED SPRING 2012101 Crockett Street, Shreveport, LA

Page 17: Student Portfolio

“If life is enjoyed, does it have to make sense?” This quote is taken from the 2012 Oscar winning short film, “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore,” animated by Moonbot Studios in Shreveport, LA. The concept of Moonbot Studios, an illustration and animation studio, is to enhance the creativity and innovation of the employees while giving them a space that they can call a second home.

The concept of the new Moonbot Studio space originates from the process the employees use to illustrate and then animate. All ideas are first started by hand by artists and are then brought into the digital world. Moonbot describes themselves by say-ing, “Tired of Earth? Gravity getting you down? In this day and age, there are few who explore the depths of time, space, and the imagination. However, somewhere between the lunar core resides a collective endeavoring to persevere.”

The new Moonbot will be a large studio space that builds upon the fact that employes essentially “live up there.” It will be based upon the feelings a child or adult has while reading a fictional fantasy story; where one is fully emerged in fantasy that he or she feels as if they are another character in the story. It will be created as if a person is actually inside of one of William Joyce’s movies or books and walking around a scene.

ARTWORKAND GRAPHICS

COMPLETED THROUGHOUT 2008-2012

Page 47: Student Portfolio

I am interested in examining relationships that people have with one another and themselves. I have been influenced by the poetry and musicality of Thom Yorke in his album, In Rainbows. The line that best describes my work says,

“Dare not speak its name Dedicated to all human beings Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore In rainbows.”

My work takes figures and landscapes from photos, memory, and imagination. It is a marriage of the natural world as we see it, and nature as it could be perceived if humans could see a thought, or perhaps a goal. My painting questions ideas of per-ception, similar to the genre of literature called magical realism. This is where “the story explains these magical elements as real occurrences, presented in a straightforward manner that places the “real” and the “fantastic” in the same stream of thought.” My paintings take real relationships and reaches beyond the confines of realism in a landscape to demonstrate “the mystery that breathes behind things.”
