Yourroleasastudentonplacement:

Youareresponsibleforyourownlearningandshouldbeabletodemonstratethistoyourmentor.Makesureyoucontactyourplacementareaaroundtwoweeksbeforestartingtointroduceyourselfandmakesurethey’reexpectingyou!Askwhohasbeenallocatedasyourmentor,yourshiftsforthefirstweek,anyspecificrequirements(uniformpolicies,parkingetc...)andwhere/whotoreporttoonyourfirstday.Ifyou’reafirstyearnewtoManchesterorinanystageofnursingcareerandhavetogotoatrustyou’venotbeentobeforeyoumayfindithelpfultovisittheplacementareabeforestarting;toplanyourtravelrouteandensureyoucangetthereontimeforearlyshifts.Youmayfindthetravelsectionusefulformoreinformation.

Mentorswillhaveanexpectationofyouobtainingacertaindegreeofknowledgesomeetyourmentorasarrangedinordertodiscussyourplacementlearningneeds,objectivesandperceivedoutcomes.It'sagoodideatohaveagoodlookthroughyourPracticeAssessmentRecord(PAR)beforestartingyourplacement,fillinginyourinitialassessmentbeforeyourfirstshiftandfamiliarisingyourselfwithobjectivesyou'llbeaimingtomeetduringyourplacement.RememberthereisadditionalspaceinyouronlinePARtorecorddetailsofanymeetingsadditionaltoyourinitial,mid-wayandfinalinterviews.Demonstratethatyouareactivelyseekinginformationandlearningopportunitiesthroughouttheplacement.Yourwardshouldhaveacopyoftheirstudentcharterondisplay;thiswilloutlineinmoredetailwhatyourmentorexpectsfromyouandwhatyoucanexpectfromyourplacement.

Ifyouhaveanyadditionalsupportplansinplacesuchas,OccupationalHealthortheDisabilitySupportOfficethatyouhavealreadycompletedwithyourAA,itisyourresponsibilitytoadviseyourmentorofanyspecificplansinplacesotheycansupportyourlearningfromthebeginningofyourplacement.Youmustinformyourmentorofanysituationsyouencounterthatarebeyondyourlevelofcompetenceandyoualsohavearesponsibilitytodiscussanyareasofdeficitsencounteredinyourplacementwithyourmentor,preferablybeforetheendoftheirplacement,sothisproblemcanbeaddressedandrectified.Initialandmid-waypointmeetingswithyourmentorareyouropportunitytodiscussyourprogress.Bepreparedandplaninadvancewhatyouwouldliketoraiseateachpointinyourplacement.Don’tbeafraidtoaskanykindofquestionsorsuggestideasforyourlearningopportunities.Askotherstafforpeersifyouarestrugglingforideas. ExcellenceinPractice:

MentorsandtheWardTeamoftenrecognisestudents’professionalism,theirinsightfulwaysofworkingorinvolvementwithpatientsandcarersatthebedside.TherewillbealetterofrecommendationsenttorecogniseexcellentpracticeiftheSchoolreceivesthisfromyourmentor.Youcanalsonominateyourmentororwardfora‘RecognisingExcellenceinPractice’awardviatheuniversityiftheyhavegoneaboveandbeyondinfacilitatingyourlearningduringplacement.Sometrustsalsohavetheirownin-houseawardstorecogniseexcellentmentorship.

MakingupHours&WorkingNights/WeekendsonPlacement:

Itmightbethatyoufallillorareunabletomakeplacementforpersonalreasons.Aslongasyouhavefollowedthecorrectproceduretoinformbothuniversityandplacementofyourabsence,youcanmakethesehoursbackatalaterstage.Somestudentsmayprefertodoanextrafewhoursoneachshift,oryoucanarrangewithuniversityforanextensionontimeinplacementinexceptionalcircumstances.Formoreinformationonthispleasechecktheappropriateblackboardarearegards

placementhours.ThePracticeHoursofficecanbecontactedon01613067801andyoucanliaisewithyourAAabouthowyouplantomakeupmissedhours-butrememberyoushouldn’tworkahighnumberoflongdaystoaccruetimeoffby‘frontloading’yourhours.

GuidanceintheProgrammeHandbookoutlinesthatthereshouldbeaneducationaladvantagetoyouworkingmorethantheexpectedonelongdayperweekandoneweekendpermonth.It’snolongermandatorytocompleteasetnumberofnightsoverthethreeyearsbutyoudoneedtobeabletodemonstrateyouhavehadexposureto24hourcare,someareassuchasICUorA&Ecanbejustasbusyatnightsotherewillbeloadsoflearningopportunitiesonnights.Nightshiftsonotherwardscanalsoofferalotbutitmaybeanideatobringsomeworkinorwritereflectionsiftherearelotsofquietperiods.

Yourmentor’sroleonplacement:ThisyearseestheintroductionoftheGMSynergyprojectacrossGreaterManchesterinvolvingallfourHigherEducationInstitutionsdeliveringnursetrainingandkeyNHSTrusts.GMSynergyisbasedontheCLiP™model(CollaborativelearninginPractice)developedbytheUniversityofEastAngliaandaimstoincreaseyourconfidence,competenceandperformanceinpracticebyfollowingacoaching,ratherthanmentoring,approachtolearning.Thecoachingapproachtopracticelearningadoptsastrongerfocustowardself-directedlearningwiththeaimofdevelopingyourconfidenceandleadershipskills.Youwillbeencouragedtoleadyourlearningonplacementwithlessfocusonfollowingthedirectionofthementorandmorefocusonsupportingyoutoidentifyyourgoalsandobjectives,workingwiththe‘coach’whowillofferguidanceandcriticalchallenge.

Inthecoachingmodel,youwillbeallocatedanamedmentorwithanNMCrecognisedmentoringqualificationbutonaday-to-daybasisbe‘coached’byasuitablyexperiencedpractitionerwhoisnotnecessarilyamentor.Thismeansthattherearetimeswhenyournamedmentormaybepresentintheclinicalareawithoutactingasthecoach.Yourmentorwillberesponsibleforsigningyourhoursandassessingyourprogressagainstthelearningoutcomesbycompletingtheinitial,mid-pointandfinalinterviewswithyou.

Ifyouareillorlikelytobelateonshift,youshouldcallyourplacementasacourtesytoletyourmentorknowyouwon’tbecomingin,orwillbelate,youshouldalsocontacttheSchoolsicknessandabsenceofficebyphoneandemail-theirdetailscanbefoundintheusefulcontactslistontheinsidecoverofthishandbook.Ifyourmentorisillorinannualleaveduringyourtimeonplacementyoushouldworkwithanagreedothermemberoftheteamandtheycanfeedbacktoyourmentorwhentheyreturn.NotallqualifiedStaffNursesarementorsbutyouwouldusuallyhavemorethanonementor.Ifyouknowthatyourmentorwillbeawayinadvanceyoushouldarrangeyourshiftstoworkwithanassociatementororusethisasanopportunitytoarrangespokes.

It’salsogoodtopre-arrangeyourmeetingswithyourallocatedmentorincasetheyhavebookedannualleaveduringyourplacementblock.It’simportanttobeassertivebutprofessionalinthesemeetingswithyourmentor,ifyoufeelstronglyaboutacertainissuerelatedtoyourlearningit’s

importantthatyoucanarticulatethistoyourmentorsoyoucanmeetthelearningobjectivesyouhaveoutlinedandgetthemostoutofyourplacement.Youneedtobeabletoraiseissueswithyourmentorbutifyoufindthesituationisgettingheatedorthemeetingisn’tprogressing/addressingtheseissuestrytotakeastepback.Youcanalwaysrevisitaconversationinadditionalmeetingsoryoucouldtrydiscussingitwithanothermemberofstaffsuchasyourassociatementororthedepartmentmanager.Havealookatthe‘SupportonPlacement’sectionformoredetailsonwhotocontactifyouexperiencementorshipissuesandrememberthatyoudohavetherighttonegotiateanewmentorshouldtherebeextenuatingcircumstances.

AccountabilityandResponsibilitiesoftheMentor:

• Thementoristoremainresponsibleforthepatient/clientgroupatalltimes.• Theyarealsoresponsibleforliaisingwiththestudent’slinktutor(ULLorAA)inthefollowing

circumstances:o Ifthestudentdemonstratesunprofessionalbehaviour(asdefinedintheNMCCodeofConduct).o Ifthestudentfailstocomplywithlocalpoliciesandproceduresfollowingextensive

discussions/explanationsofthesame.o Ifthestudent,followingnegotiationwiththeirmentor,continuestofailtomeettherequired

targetsorobjectives.

ThisisoutlinedinthenewNMCCodeunder9.4;“supportstudents’andcolleagues’learningtohelpthemdeveloptheirprofessionalcompetenceandconfidence.”TheNMCguidanceisthatthestudentsspendaminimumof40%oftheirplacementunderthesupervision(directorindirect)oftheirmentor.Therefore,thestudentdoesnotneedtobephysicallywiththeirmentorfor40%ofthetime,aslongasthementorisincommunicationwiththerestofthestaffregardstheirperformanceetc.thisisanacceptableformat.Afewareasnowhaveamodelof‘teammentorship’whereseveralmentorswilloverseestudentstrainingasateam.Trytobeasflexibleasyoucanwithhourstoworkwithyourmentorasmuchaspossiblebuttheyshouldalsotrytoaccommodateyourneedsaroundshiftpatterns.

TrustsandPEFs:ThroughouttheBNurscourseyoumayfindyourselfallocatedtoplacementsacrossthewholeofGreaterManchester.Thefourmainboroughsforplacementare;Trafford,Manchester,TamesideandStockport.Placementscanalsoincludenon-NHSareasincludingprivatehospitals,hospices,andnursinghomes.It’simportanttorememberthattherearesomedifferencesbetweentrusts.Yourexperiencesbetweendifferenttrustsmayvary(forexample;differencesinEarlyWarningScoringSystems)soit’simportanttofamiliariseyourselfwiththetrustpolicywhenyoustartyourplacement.Guidanceonthiswillusuallybefoundinthestudentfileatyourplacementorviathetrustintranet.

It’simportanttoattendtheInductionforyourtrust;theywillcoverimportantinformationsuchasfiresafety,localtrustpolicies,accesstohospitalintranetanddetailsofanyeducationeventslikestudentseminars,simulationsuitesessions(notavailableforallhospitalsandsometimeslimitedto2nd&3rdyearsonly)andInter-ProfessionalLearning(IPL)workshops.TheyaregenerallymandatorybutcontactyourPEFifyouareunabletoattendduetosicknessorothercircumstancesandthey
