University Art Collection

Columbia maintains a large collection ofart, much of which is on view throughoutthe campus in libraries, lounges, offices,and outdoors. The collection includes avariety of works, such as paintings, sculp-tures, prints, drawings, photographs, anddecorative arts. The objects range in datefrom the ancient Near Eastern cylinder sealsof the second millennium B.C.E. to con-temporary prints and photographs.

Also in the collection are numerous por-traits of former faculty and other membersof the University community. Among themost distinguished portraits are those of theReverend Myles Cooper, the second Pres-ident of the college, painted by JohnSingleton Copley, and of the noted physi-cian and botanist David Hosack, painted byRembrandt Peale, both of which are on dis-play in the King’s College Room of theColumbiana Collection. Chinese ceramicsand bronzes from the Sackler Collections atColumbia University, which contains worksfrom the Ancient Near East as well as fromEast Asia, are on view in the Faculty Roomin Low Memorial Library. The Universityalso has the largest single collection ofpaintings by the American Florine Stett-heimer, a selection of which is always onview in the Rare Book Reading Room of theAvery Architectural and Fine Arts Library.

Several notable sculptures are displayedon the Morningside campus. Among themare Daniel Chester French’s Alma Mater, on

Columbia University is home to one ofNew York City’s most celebrated centers forthe performing arts—the Kathryn BacheMiller Theatre. The Theatre has distin-guished itself with diverse programmingdesigned to enrich the community’s culturallife in music, dance, film, theatre, and liter-ature. At the Miller Theatre, the art of thepast is seen as the foundation for the art ofthe future—it is a theatre of exploration.

Miller Theatre presents artists from virtu-ally every field of performing arts. Classicaland contemporary music have been show-cased in such distinguished series as the

“Classical Music Suite,” the “Essential Key-board Series,” and the “Sonic Boom Festival.”Artists appearing at Miller Theatre haveincluded the Juilliard, Guarneri, Shanghai,Emerson, Australian, and St. PetersburgString Quartets; pianists Russell Sherman,Peter Serkin, Ursula Oppens, and CharlesRosen; as well as musical artists Joel Krosnickand Gilbert Kalish, Dawn Upshaw, BenitaValente, Speculum Musicae, the Da CapoChamber Players, Continuum, and theNew York New Music Ensemble.

The “Jazz! in Miller Theatre” series has help-ed to preserve one of America’s most importantart forms and includes traditional jazz, bebop,progressive, Latin, and blues in both instru-mental and vocal styles. The series has featuredmasters Tito Puente, Terence Blanchard,Jacky Terrasson, Billy Harper, Charles Brown,Art Farmer, Ahmad Jamal, Max Roach,Abbey Lincoln, and Tommy Flanagan.

As a platform for literary events, Millerhas welcomed Nobel and Pulitzer Prize–winning writers in its “Theatre of Ideas”series, which has included Nadine Gordimer,Joseph Brodsky, Amos Oz, Susan Sontag,David Mamet, and Kenzaburo Oe. In addi-tion, the Theatre has showcased both estab-lished and emerging voices like JeffreyEugenides, Scott Smith, Oscar Hijuelos,Harold Brodkey, Annie Dillard, E. AnnieProulx, John Ashbery, Edmund White, andSusan Minot.

1998–99 SEASON

The 1998–99 season marks the tenth anni-versary of the Miller Theatre. Perennial Millerfavorites like the Juilliard String Quartet, JoelKrosnick and Gilbert Kalish, and UrsulaOppens will be joined on the calendar byexciting new series featuring dance, early music,jazz, and a celebration of Goethe’s Faust.

Miller ticket prices are among thebest cultural bargains in New York City,and Columbia University students receivediscounted admission to all events. The LeRoy Neiman Center provides theoptimum environment in which to exposegraduate and undergraduate students to newtechniques in the production of intaglio, litho-graphy, serigraphy, photography, and com-puter imagining. The facilities offer first-rateresources of studios, labs, exhibition space,and personnel to artists, students, and fac-ulty. The works of students and guest artistsare on display in the exhibition space.

Exhibitions relating to the University’s his-tory and its current events and activities areheld in the Rotunda throughout the year.Various departments and divisions withinthe University organize the exhibitions,which generally contain books, manuscripts,photographs, and art objects. Recent exhibi-tions have included The Harriman Institute,Fifty Years: 1946–1996; Recent Acquisitionsin Photography; and Constructing LowMemorial Library, held in celebration of thecentennial of the Morningside campus.

St. Paul’s Chapel is the site of the PostcryptArts Underground, a student-run organiza-tion that offers a venue for visual, musical,and literary media. The Postcrypt Coffee-house attracts musicians and poets from

Columbia and across the nation. The pro-gram allows student musicians to showcasetheir talent and provides free quality enter-tainment.

The Postcrypt Art Gallery is specifical-ly designed to exhibit the work of Colum-bia students. The Gallery curates showsbuilt around a particular theme, so thatColumbia artists and photographers may display their work and meet fellowartists and aficionados in an informalatmosphere.

The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Galleryopened in April 1986 as the first museum-quality exhibition space on the Columbiacampus. Operating under the auspices ofthe Department of Art History andArchaeology, the gallery serves to comple-ment the University’s educational missionby mounting exhibitions that relate to thecurriculum and at the same time are of in-terest to a broad audience. Three exhibitions

are held during the academic year, most ofthem organized by graduate students or fac-ulty members on topics relating to theircurrent research. Scheduled for 1998–1999are Hogarth and His Times: Serious Comedy(Fall 1998), an exhibition of prints anddrawings by Giovanni Battista Piranesifrom the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts

Intercollegiate AthleticsColumbia’s intercollegiate athletic teamscompete primarily against teams from the

seven other Ivy League institutions. Col-umbia fields 14 men’s and 13 women’s var-sity intercollegiate teams and competes inNCAA Division I. Approximately 650 menand women from Columbia College, theFu Foundation School of Engineering andApplied Science, and Barnard College par-ticipate in the various levels of intercolle-giate athletics available at the University.

As academic institutions, ColumbiaUniversity and Barnard College expect theirathletes to attain both a superior educationand the degree to which this educationleads. The Department of IntercollegiateAthletics and Physical Education encour-ages and assists athletes in achieving thesegoals to the extent possible within the rulesand regulations of the University, theDepartment, and the conferences and theassociation in which it holds membership.As a result, the percentage of athletes whograduate from Columbia and Barnard isthe same high rate as for nonathletes.

The University, governed by the rulesand regulations of the Eastern CollegeAthletic Conference (ECAC), the NationalCollegiate Athletic Association (NCAA),and the Ivy League, offers its undergradu-ates a full and diversified program for those

Eligibility Rules and RequirementsI. To be eligible to compete in intercolle-

giate athletics, a student must meet stan-dards set by the University, the Departmentof Physical Education and IntercollegiateAthletics, the Ivy League, ECAC, and

EARL HALL CENTER

The Office of the University Chaplain islocated in the Earl Hall Center andincludes St. Paul’s Chapel Music Programand Community Impact. The mission ofthe Center is to build community withinthe University and with its neighbors, whileproviding students with an opportunity toexplore the relationship between faith andlearning. The Center is as diverse as theUniversity it serves. It is home to 62 stu-dent groups that are recognized by theStudent Governing Board. Additionally,United Campus Ministries, which includesdenominations of Christian, Jewish, Islamic,and Eastern practices, provides studentswith individual counseling, religious andnonreligious group support, referrals, andpersonal assistance.

In addition to student programming,community service is also a main functionof the Earl Hall Center. Through CommunityImpact, the Center provides opportunitiesfor undergraduate, graduate, and profes-sional students at Columbia to participate

in a wide range of service programs. Seepages 81–82 for information regardingcommunity service and outreach programs.

UNIVERSITY CHAPLAIN

The University Chaplain is the Director ofthe Earl Hall Center. As UniversityChaplain, Jewelnel Davis focuses on a

nexus of issues, including religion, spiritu-ality, race, ethnicity, sexual identity, socialjustice, and community service.

One point of focus for Chaplain Davisand her staff is accessibility to students.Students often e-mail her, make appoint-ments with her individually and in groups,or speak with the chaplain associates orprogram coordinators—student liaisons

II. The University, the Ivy League,ECAC, and NCAA require that an athletebe a full-time, matriculated student in afour-year baccalaureate program. The ath-lete must be enrolled in at least 12 creditsper semester while competing in his/hersport and be making normal progresstoward his/her degree. Individuals regis-tered as special, part-time, or nonmatricu-lated students are ineligible.

III. Columbia and Barnard require that astudent complete a minimum of 24 creditsin his/her first academic year, 52 creditsthrough his/her sophomore year, and 86

credits through his/her junior year. Col-umbia College requires 124 points forgraduation, while Barnard College requires120 points. Students in the Fu FoundationSchool of Engineering should check withtheir dean about credit requirements. Allstudents should read the appropriate bul-letin for more detailed information.

The Bard Athletic Center includes a 20-yard swimming pool, three squash courts, agymnasium, an exercise room, Nautilus andUniversal exercise equipment, dumbbellsets and benches, stationary bicycles, row-ing machines, lockers, showers, and saunas.The facility is accessible for the disabled.There is no membership fee for HealthSciences students. Student spouse/domes-tic-partner memberships, annual member-ships, and daily member and guest passesare available for purchase. The Centeroffers an extensive aerobics program.Nonstudent memberships are clearedthrough the Health Sciences Office.

Common MealA new program at Columbia, the CommonMeal, is a weekly gathering sponsored byChaplain Davis that addresses differentissues and concerns of the Columbia com-munity. Student leaders from across theUniversity are invited, along with facultyand senior administrators, to discuss ideasand opinions about Columbia’s past, pre-sent, and future. Provost Cole is a regularattendee of the Common Meal. To initiate acommon meal, students should get in touchwith a chaplain associate by phone or e-mail.

Since 1969 the Student Governing Board(SGB) has overseen new group member-ship, organized intergroup events, andtaken an advisory role in programming forthe Earl Hall Center. The SGB works tofoster discussion and cooperation on cam-pus in conjunction with its student govern-ing bodies. An executive committee of nineelected students works with Chaplain Davisand the clergy to build an open and engag-ing atmosphere.

The Interfaith Library is a resource housedin the Schiff Room of Earl Hall with infor-mation on different religious beliefs andpractices. While texts do not yet circulate,the Library is open for reading during regu-lar Earl Hall building hours, except whenthe room is used for private meetings.

St. Paul’s Chapel is also part of the Earl HallCenter. One of Columbia’s oldest and mostbeautiful buildings, the Chapel is not only aplace for weddings and various religious ser-vices but also serves as a cultural center, featur-ing both an exciting music program and manyspeakers and educators. The Postcrypt ArtGallery and Coffeehouse at St. Paul’s Chapelare favorite spots for artists to play music,read poetry, and exhibit their artwork.

The Chapel Music Program, under the aus-pices of the Earl Hall Center, offers a year-round program of recitals, concerts, andspecial music events in the magnificentspace of St. Paul’s Chapel, a New York CityLandmark Building. The events include theHalloween Concert “Midnight Madness,”the annual Columbia Candlelight Concert,Perspectives in Music and Art, the Columbia

Community Open Sing, and the ThursdayNoon Organ Recitals, a half-century-longcampus tradition featuring the University’sfamous 94-rank Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ.An annual calendar of events is issued eachfall. Columbia and Barnard students mayalso take organ instruction in the Chapelfor academic credit (W1509/W1510) aspart of the Program in Music Performance.

Over 850 Community Impact volunteersoperate 25 programs serving more than1,200 people each week. By addressing thefundamental human needs for food, cloth-ing, shelter, and companionship throughthe combined efforts of Columbia’s studentbody and the neighborhood’s residents, Com-munity Impact affirms a vision of mutualrespect and cooperation. Community Im-pact operates on the basic belief that serviceand understanding can foster a more uni-fied, integrated, and shared community.

Community Impact offers various volun-teer opportunities, including Peace Games,

which aim to train young people in themethods of conflict resolution throughcooperation and mutual assistance. Trainedvolunteers teach elementary and middleschool classes ways of resolving differencesby understanding points of view, learningtogether, and communicating effectively.

Community Impact also teams with the Empowerment Zone in upper Man-hattan/Harlem neighborhoods (one of sixareas designated by Congress for revitaliza-tion of distressed urban areas) through itsNational Empowerment Zone EducationSuccess Project. Since Fall 1995, CommunityImpact has recruited volunteers to mentorand tutor inner-city youths; to teach, tutor,and counsel low-income adults in GEDand ESOL programs; and to provide familyliteracy and citizenship workshops.

In addition, Community Impact spon-sors efforts to provide direct emergency ser-vices through programs like the EmergencyFood Pantry and the Clothes Closet. Theseprograms provide food packs and clothingfor low-income and homeless individuals,families, the elderly, and people with AIDS.In addition to efforts to provide servicesand companionship to these populations,

Community Impact also sponsors variousother educational, advocacy, and environ-mental programs. Most projects take placeon weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m. One-third of Community Impact pro-jects are held on campus; two-thirds areheld off campus. The Double Discovery Center, founded in1965 at Columbia University, is a not-for-profit youth service agency for low-income,first-generation college bound junior andsenior high school students living andattending school in New York City. By allstatistical indicators, the students thatDDC serves are at risk of not completinghigh school or ever entering college.Through its two federally funded educationprograms, Upward Bound and TalentSearch, the Center offers year-round acade-mic, career, college, and financial aid, aswell as personal development services. Thegoal is to increase the students' rate of highschool completion, and of college atten-dance through graduation. Annually, theDDC provides services to more than 1,000students from Harlem and other New YorkCity communities.

The Center offers a variety of meaningfulvolunteer opportunities to University students interested in youth education and

community service. In addition to organiz-ing volunteer activities through clubs, fra-ternities, and residence hall groups,Columbia students serve as volunteertutors, SAT teachers, residential teachingassistants, mentors, and advisors.

The Community Affairs Department pro-vides technical assistance (fundraising, pro-gram development, and special events plan-ning) to community-based groups in theWashington Heights/Inwood area. Audubon School/Columbia PartnersAs Leaders (PAL) Program Medical students act as mentors to fifth-gradestudents at P.S. 128. Mentors provide tutorialservices and participate in recreationalactivities with elementary school youngsters.

Ivy League: Uptown W.I.N.S.(Women in Neighborhood Sports) Provides recreational/educational programsfor girls and young women ages 6 to 21. Inaddition to basketball, volleyball, and softballprograms, the League also provides work-shops on relevant topics (sexuality, health,college preparation) and special events,including a sports day at Riverbank StatePark and a celebration of National Girlsand Women in Sports Day. The Leagueserves as an umbrella organization for otherfemale sports programs in the area. It oper-ates out of six schools in School District 6.

Summer Youth Employment Program Provides summer jobs to 100 communityyouths who are placed in various depart-ments for seven weeks. This Department ofEmployment Program for youths 14 through21 provides structured, well-supervised workactivities that encourage individual initiativeand responsibility. Work activities developthe youths’ clerical and interpersonal skills,as well as habits and attitudes that increasetheir knowledge of the working world. Theprogram is run through a collaborationwith Children’s Arts and Sciences Work-shops and Alianza Dominicana.

The Student Councils of Columbia Collegeand the Fu Foundation School of Engi-neering and Applied Science represent theirconstituents by articulating student views onacademics, campus social life, and adminis-trative functions and procedures. The twoCouncils also engage in shaping campus lifeby jointly overseeing the Union of StudentOrganizations (USO), the body that fundsStudent Activities’ recognized undergradu-ate student groups. Representatives and

officers are elected annually to the Coun-cils, and all students are invited to apply forappointments to special Council commit-tees and work groups.

The USO provides additional fundingfor Club Sports, Community Impact, theEarl Hall Student Governing Board, theInter-Greek Council, and the Under-graduate House Council. The daily role ofthe USO in the life of student organiza-tions includes facilitating events, calendarplanning, and operating the StudentGovernment Office and Desktop Pub-lishing Center in S. W. Mudd. The USOalso performs the important tasks of peeradvisement, financial counseling, and advo-cacy for student groups. USO officers areelected by their peers each year and play anactive role in educating all students aboutcampus organizations and programs as wellas about important organizational policies.At the beginning of each academic year, theUSO sponsors Activities Day to introducestudents to campus groups at Columbia.

The Office of Student Activities coordi-nates the reservation of all outdoor spacesfor all schools and organizations on theMorningside campus. Completing an out-door-space request form is the first step inplanning outdoor events such as barbecues,concerts, or tabling. Events involving pri-vate enterprises generally may not be sched-uled on campus; rare exceptions are madeonly by the Office of University Com-munity Affairs.

The Office of Student Activities reviewsand approves outdoor-space requests for theMorningside campus. Events involvingsound amplification, alcohol, facilitiesarrangements (setup and cleanup), security,and fire or safety issues warrant particularattention and concern, as well as requiringadvanced notification and planning. Stu-dent Activities staff are always available tohelp plan such events.

To reserve outdoor space, comprehensiveinformation about the event and appropri-ate adviser approval is needed beforerequests can be reviewed. At least five

The student-run Union of Student Organizations(USO) recognizes, funds, and supports more than 125student groups, including arts and cultural organiza-tions, student media, preprofessional societies, specialinterest clubs, and various service organizations. TheUSO also sponsors over 100 athletic, spiritual, commu-nity service, and Greek-letter organizations throughoutthe campus. Greek letter organizations have a 150-yeartradition at Columbia. Today, more than20 single-sex and coed Greek organizationshave chapters on campus, and most areaffiliated with a national organization.

Students have an opportunity to familiar-ize themselves with various chapters oncampus during each organization’s rushprogram. During rush each fraternity andsorority hosts a variety of events, afterwhich it invites prospective members topledge. Rush is open to every full-timeundergraduate student in all divisions ofthe University. Some chapters choose new

members each term, while others hold rush only once a year. Most Greek chaptershave their own brownstones within severalblocks of the campus. Members may chooseto live in their fraternity or sorority houseafter their first academic year.

The Inter-Greek Council (IGC) is thegoverning body of all fraternities and soror-ities at Columbia. It consists of all organi-zation presidents plus two delegates fromeach chapter. The IGC recognizes newchapters, organizes inter-Greek programs,and ensures cooperation among variouschapters. Its judicial board hears discipli-nary matters that bear on the conduct oforganizations.

Bard Hall Commons is the center for activ-ities on the Health Sciences campus. TheCommons includes offices, the RecoveryRoom Cafe, the Main Lounge, the P&SClub, the Solarium/Game Room, pianopractice rooms, and Photo Lab, all locatedon the main level of the building; the diningroom and weight room on the 1b level; andthe Bard Athletic Center on the 3b level.

The P&S Club, a student-run organizationintended to enhance the lives of students atthe Health Sciences campus, sponsors morethan 30 groups that draw together thediverse talents of the student body. From

wine tasting to theatre, community out-reach to chess, the club funds groups thatreflect the current interests of students.Each year, new organizations are created tokeep up with these changing interests. Theclub’s officers, elected from each P&S class,operate under the guidance of the FacultyAdvisory Board and assume the entireresponsibility for managing the club. Thosewho chair the various activities and groupsassist these student officers. The P&S Clubis the most active and comprehensive stu-dent organization in American medicaleducation today.

Columbia University Residence Halls(URH) provides housing for approximate-ly 4,500 undergraduates and 100 graduatestudents. Ninety percent of all undergrad-uates and 99 percent of all first-year stu-dents live in URH. There are 15 under-graduate residence halls located on andaround the Morningside campus, withfirst-year students occupying Carman,John Jay, and Hartley-Wallach Halls.

URH offers students a variety of hous-ing options. Buildings are arranged in

corridor or suite style, and all rooms areeither singles or doubles. At least 65 per-cent of undergraduate students live in sin-gles. The majority of residence halls havekitchens, lounges, and laundry facilities.

University-owned housing in theMorningside neighborhood is available toColumbia University graduate, profession-al, and General Studies students registeredin a full-time degree program at the Morning-side campus. Students registered at the HealthSciences campus should refer to the HealthSciences Housing information below.

Because Columbia University has tenschools at its Morningside campus, withprograms ranging in duration from ninemonths to seven years, the number ofUAH units that become empty and avail-able for occupancy varies each year. In earlysummer, the number of housing units ex-pected to be ready during or before regis-tration is determined, and each school isallocated a specific number of UAH spacesfor its students. Each school determineshow best to use its allocations.

Types of Student AccommodationsUAH consists of apartments and dormito-ry-style suites, all located within walkingdistance of the campus. Housing is avail-able to single students, couples, and stu-dents with dependent children. Due tospace limitations, UAH is unable to pro-vide housing to accommodate friends orrelatives other than dependent children andspouses/partners or to provide additionalspace to satisfy unusual work or activity needs.

Eligibility for HousingTo be eligible to receive housing and remainin residence, students must be registered ina full-time degree program at Columbia.General Studies students must be enrolledas full-time degree candidates or in certainspecial certificate programs. Eligibility forUAH is limited to five years from the dateof first registration or for the duration ofthe program, whichever is shorter. How-ever, doctoral students in the GraduateSchool of Arts and Sciences may be eligiblefor an additional two years upon applica-tion by the school to the UAH office.

UAH cannot offer housing until the stu-dent’s school has approved his or her hous-ing application. The UAH office will notifystudents upon approval of their applications.

Application InformationIn order to obtain housing in a University-owned building, a new student must: (1)satisfy certain eligibility criteria, (2) beapproved for housing by his or her school,and (3) follow the application proceduresoutlined in UAH’s brochure, Housing for

Graduate, Professional, and General StudiesStudents 1998–1999. Note that applica-tions for the 1999 Spring Term must beapproved by each student’s school no laterthan January 12. Students whose applica-tions are received after this deadline willautomatically be placed on the UAH waitlist. An application is specific to the semes-ter in which it was filed. Each semester,new wait lists are generated, and each stu-dent who wishes to apply for housing mustsubmit a new application.

Most student tenants receive standardNew York City apartment leases with somemodifications reflecting the special relation-ship between the University and its studenttenants. With a few exceptions, leases andcontracts are renewable annually in June forthe term of the student’s eligibility.

All student applications for housing mustfirst be approved by their school beforeUAH is permitted to offer housing. Inquiriesregarding approval of applications shouldbe addressed to the housing liaison in thestudent’s school—not to the UAH office.The UAH office will notify students uponapproval of their applications.

Lease and Contract Signing ProceduresThe UAH office is closed Saturdays, Sun-days, and University holidays, and it is notpossible to sign a lease or move into anapartment at those times. Leases/contractsmust be signed by the prospective tenant inthe presence of a UAH employee at theUAH office, Monday through Friday, from9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Leases/contracts willnot be mailed or faxed; keys will not bemailed. Keys will not be provided normove in permitted before signing a lease. Itis important that you make your best effortto plan your travel arrangements to coin-cide with your lease signing and move-indate. Payment of the first month’s rent anda security deposit equal to the first month’srent must be made when you accept anapartment or unit. UAH accepts moneyorders, cashier’s checks, certified checks,and traveler’s checks (no internationalmoney orders, personal checks, cash, orcredit cards are accepted).

TransfersUAH expects that your accommodationswill be suitable for the duration of yourstudies at Columbia. However, should achange in an apartment or room becomenecessary, you may apply for a transfer.Because of the high volume of incoming

students for the fall and spring terms, andthe time constraints involved in preparingapartments for their occupancy, applica-tions to transfer are accepted only duringthe months of October, November, Feb-ruary, and March. Transfers are granteddepending on unit availability. Requests for transfers cannot be considered at othertimes of the year except in some cases fortransfers from one room to another withinthe same apartment.

UAH Wait ListIn the event that a school receives moreapplications for housing than its allocationof UAH units, some students will be placedon the UAH wait list. These students willbe notified by their school. Any continuingstudents who apply for housing will beplaced on the wait list.

The wait list is generated by the UAHoffice in the last week of August. Studentsreceive wait list numbers based on studentstatus (new or continuing) and the datethat UAH receives their applications. Fornew students, the distance from permanenthome address to campus will also be a fac-tor in the wait list number assigned.

Calls for new students off the wait listtypically begin in early September. It is theresponsibility of each student to ascertainhis or her position on the wait list and tomonitor the movement of the wait list.Movement of the wait list is dependentupon unit availability. In accordance withavailability, students will be offered housinguntil December 4, 1998, for the fall term,and April 23, 1999, for the spring term.Each semester a new wait list is generated,and each student must file a new applica-tion, which is available at the UAH office.

A detailed description of wait list proce-dures is available at the UAH office andwill be provided to those new studentsplaced on the wait list.

Keep in mind . . .

• Pets are strictly prohibited in UAH,except for seeing-eye dogs and thosepets kept in aquaria.

• Couples may not reside in apartmentshares or suite rooms.

• Applications for transfer from single tocouples’ accommodations generally arenot approved during a student’s first yearin housing. Make your plans accordingly.

Single Student HousingMoving within Residence HallsBeginning in mid-September RoomTransfer Applications become available inthe Housing Office for those students wholive in Bard Hall and the Georgian Residenceand who wish to change rooms within thesetwo residences. Based on accommodationavailability, these requests are processedthroughout the academic year until mid-April.

Room Renewal is the process by whichstudents currently living in Bard Hall andthe Georgian Residence are assigned aroom in these buildings for the upcomingyear. The Housing Office distributes theRoom Renewal Application and informa-tion brochures in mid-April.

Moving from Residence Halls to UniversityApartmentsThroughout the academic year, studentsliving in Bard Hall and the Georgian Re-sidence may move to the Towers by filling a vacancy in a one-, two-, or three-bed-room UAH student apartment. A listing ofthese vacancies is posted in the HousingOffice. Students should also consult theMoving within the System flyer, which out-lines residence halls cancellation policies,required apartment occupancy, and movingguidelines.

University Apartment HousingThe Towers Lottery and Apartment Drawassigns student groups to Bard-HavenTowers for the upcoming academic year.The Housing Office distributes lotteryapplications and information brochures inearly March.

Couples HousingHousing for student couples at the HealthSciences campus is available to marriedcouples and couples living in domesticpartnerships. Because of limited availability,a Student Couples Lottery and ApartmentDraw process is conducted to assign stu-dent couples to one-bedroom apartmentsfor the upcoming academic year. TheHousing Office distributes lottery applica-tions and information brochures in earlyFebruary. The filing deadline is late Feb-ruary. Apartment viewing and selectionoccur in April.

Postdoctoral Residents The University will continue to providehousing to those who currently reside inUAH and who hold postdoctoral residencypositions at The Presbyterian Hospital, atthe College of Dental and Oral Surgery, orpostdoctoral fellowships within a Universityresearch division. These individuals areasked to reapply for University housing bycompleting a Nonstudent Housing Appli-cation available from the Housing Office.The University anticipates that it will beable to meet its current housing commit-ment, but not necessarily in your currentaccommodation. Students who currentlyreside in the two- and/or three-bedroomapartments will be relocated to full-sizeone-bedroom apartments. The applicationdeadline is April 1.

Computers in Health SciencesHousingHealth Sciences Residence Halls are wired toenable students to connect a properly con-figured computer with a network adaptercard to the campus computer network,allowing access to online resources at fastnetwork speeds. Resources that studentsmay access include e-mail (all studentsreceive a free basic e-mail account); theWorld Wide Web; online library holdings;indexes and abstracts; student services (e.g.,ordering transcripts online); and, for somecourses, course syllabi and notes. Publicaccess computer clusters are also available atseveral locations on the Health Sciencescampus, but many students will find hav-ing their own computers more convenient.Residential Computer Consultants (RCCs)are part-time student staff who live in resi-dence halls. International House

This private residence, located on RiversideDrive north of 122nd Street, accommo-dates 700 graduate students, interns, andtrainees from nearly 100 countries. Facilities

include a cafeteria, laundry, fitness center,study rooms, music practice rooms, a gym-nasium, and a pub. Columbia UniversityApartment Housing has leased 100 singlerooms with shared baths on coed and single-sex floors for eligible applicants.Through a separate International Houseapplication, which must be submitted withthe UAH application, the “I. House”Admissions Committee selects residentswho are willing to contribute to the widerange of social, cultural, and educationalprograms offered to the InternationalHouse community.

Columbia’s new student center, AlfredLerner Hall, is currently under construc-tion on the site of the previous student cen-ter, Ferris Booth Hall. Getting Mail

Most residence halls are served by theURH mail centers and the URH PackageRoom. Mail centers can only accept regularU.S. Mail and Priority Mail. The URHPackage Room, located in the basement ofCarman Hall, accepts packages and expressmail from all carriers. Resolving Problems

Campus card-readers and cardkey locks will not respond to your Columbia Card if youhave not been granted specific privileges or access to certain buildings—such as DodgePhysical Fitness Center, URH, Libraries, and areas secured with cardkey locks. The IDCenter cannot grant such privileges or clear students for access to secured areas. Studentsmust contact the appropriate office to resolve these problems.

Keep in mind that it may take up to 24 hours for Columbia’s system to update buildingaccess privileges or Dining Dollar accounts.

The Office of Communications Services(OCS) provides telephone, data connectivi-ty, and voice mail via the RolmPhoneSystem to students living in Columbia andBarnard residence halls and some Uni-versity Apartment Housing (UAH). OCSalso offers cable television to specificUniversity Residence Halls.

RolmPhone SystemRegular telephones, answering machines,and modems will not operate on the digitalRolmPhone system.

All RolmPhones feature intracampus call-ing, inbound calling, conference calling,visual call-waiting, camp-on, forwarding,transfer, hold, and PhoneMail. PhoneMailis the RolmPhone system’s voice messagingsystem that allows a student to receive andsend messages from any touch-tone phone.Unanswered calls automatically forward toyour PhoneMail box after four rings. Eachmailbox has a capacity of 14 messages perstudent per line.

Students not living on campus or livingin non-RolmPhone service buildings whowould like to have a PhoneMail box mayorder one. For a nominal charge OCS willissue them a telephone number where mes-sages may be left. Messages may be retriev-ed from any touch-tone phone.

AT&T ACUS Service AT&T ACUS service is the billing agentfor students who use the RolmPhoneSystem. For those students in RolmPhoneservices residences, off-campus calls aremade with the use of their PersonalSecurity Code (PSC), which studentsreceive from AT&T ACUS Service. ThePSC is a seven-digit number that functionssimilarly to a telephone credit card in thatthe bill is generated through its use and notthrough the phone number itself. Sincemost first-year students have roommates,each person is issued a PSC; each person,therefore, receives his/her own bill. Studentsuse the same PSC for all off-campus callsand will be billed no matter what RolmPhonethey use or where they live on campus.

Students are responsible for contactingAT&T if they do not receive their bill.They also must keep AT&T informeddirectly of any address changes. Studentsmay also request that their bills be sent totheir permanent home address.

Optional ServicesOCS offers several optional services thatstudents may have billed to their AT&TACUS accounts. These services includedata service, private telephone units, modemsupport, and upgrades. OCS also offers cabletelevision service in Carman, East Campus,Furnald, Hogan, John Jay, Wallach, and Wien.Students must provide a cable-ready televi-sion. Residents in UAH and off campusshould contact their local cable provider.

The state-of-the-art NEC/ACC communi-cations system servicing Bard Hall, theGeorgian Residence, Bard-Haven Towers 1,2, and 3, and 106 and 154 Haven Avenue,offers a variety of features including freefive-digit dialing to all extensions withinthe campus, CPMC network, call holds,last-minute redial, two/three-way residen-tial campus calling, and voice mail. Yourtelephone number travels with you if youmove to another on-campus location(except 154 Haven). Students living inUAH buildings may elect to use eitherNEC or Bell Atlantic for their basic tele-phone services.

Using NEC TelephonesDialing across the campus is a free on-campus call. Dial 2 plus the last four digitsof the phone number to call a “304”NEC/Health Sciences Housing exchangeand 6 or 7 plus the last four digits of thephone number to call any “305” CPMCexchange. On-campus house phones arelocated in all seven residential buildings andin the Bard-Haven Tower 2 parking garage.
