STUDENT EXHIBIT FALL 2013

Within the Corridoio Fiorentino, the exhibition space of the School of Digital Imaging and Visual Arts, a selection of student work on the subject of many appetites is on display. Featured are free interpretations, impressions, and reflections. Photographic works, interior design projects, visual communication, and multimedia, inspired by the students’ high motivation and the desire to leave a visible trace of their presence in Florence.

Florence stimulates many appetites, and the objective of this exhibition is to evolve our student’s talent and recognize it.

Thus the theme of the exhibition focuses on visible or less visible aspects of the city, on what it represents today compared to its important past, and on how it is perceived and represented.

FLORENCE A CITY OF MANY APPETITESStudent Exhibit

Nel Corridoio Fiorentino, spazio espositivo

all’interno della School of Digital Imaging and

passato, e come viene percepita e quindi

reinterpretata.

The PBNB SandwichPolyptich

Appetite and taste preference vary between people and cultures. One of my favorite snacks is a peanut butter, Nutella

and banana sandwich. When talking with Italians about this combination, they viewed it as strange and slightly

alarming. I am comparing the raw and finished ingredients needed for the “PBNB” sandwich, as this transformation

is often overlooked. This critical component of a simple sandwich is not considered in everyday life; people generally

don’t think about the process required to transform raw goods into the manufactured products used to make a

sandwich. I am interested in bringing this lesser-known aspect to light and causing people to think the complete

process of assembling the sandwich, rather than the finished product.

My cravings for food have changed through the exploration of Florence. In this series, I wanted to connect our desires for

food with the body. While photographing the streets of Florence, I stumbled upon a lonely plant growing clementines, a

market full of fresh beautiful fruit and seafood with eyeballs staring. I noticed food being slurped up unpleasantly and a

minute later an elegant plate of food being abandoned as the people left.

These appetites were a mystery to me but I knew they were important to Florence.

I’ve taken a look into the detail people put in the buildings they live in. Doorknobs and handles are not often observed

and I could see they had unique characteristics. Some simple and elegant, others are big and have elaborate detail.

However they looked, there would be a change in each one every time. The appetite for detail that people have in

something as boring as a doorknob can be astonishing.

Unitled (Mouths)Polyptich

For me the obvious focal point for the idea of

“appetite” is the mouth, the body part we use

to satisfy our many appetites.

We use our mouths to taste our food, to kiss

our lovers, to pray to our gods,

and to communicate our wants and needs

to the world. This series of portraits focuses

on the mouth before the action of satisfying

their appetite. My hope, as the photographer,

is that the viewer will consider the many

possible appetites of the subject and ask

“what do they hunger for?” and perhaps cause

them reflect on their own appetites

Additive Appetite”Polyptich

Appetite can be defined as a hunger, a drive, or a desire for nourishment. The food in Florence is infamous.

Food is an addiction. Culinary artists possess an appetite to create while the city posses an appetite to consume.

Both parties are equally addicted to the concept of food. So addicted, that food is comparable to a drug. These

photographs play on the concept of food as a drug. Pasta, coffee, espresso, sugar, and a variety of seasonings

are a only a few of the most basic materials of a Florentine diet. This project takes these elements out of context

to show their addictive qualities.

Riecine Winery Kioskthe riecine winery is currently exanding and looking to incorporate a specialty cantina and retail space to promote their

product and host guests. along with a cantina design, riecine is looking to establish a transporatable kiosk that will allow

them to carry and promote their wine across italy. the design for the winery will include recycled material, and existing

material, while also incorporating modern elements. it is important that riecine connects people to the natural beauty of

chianti and the winery for the best experience possible.

Riecine Winery KioskPlacing the Riecine kiosk in the Uffizi Piazza was a strategic placement in order to bring the most harmony. Uffizi

creates a 360 degree atmosphere that contains many shapes; arches, vertical columns, variation in materials etc. It is

because of this shared idea of juxtaposition of lines as well as a view from all sides that makes this the best location

for the Riecine kiosk. Being right near the Arno River also creates the perfect atmopshere to taste wine and gaze upon

the natural beau-ty around. With the glow of the kiosk as well as the romantic lighting that surrounds, people will be

drawn to the display as their senses are eager to find out what it is they can try.

Riecine Winery KioskThe concept for the space is woven fibers. Through their natural composition, they create texture and depth. They’re

woven forms produce contrast and interest through the play of light and shadows. They also combine their organic and

natural make-up with practical usage. In my design, I will produce depth and interest, while create a cohesive

connection between the outsideand inside throguh the use of natural materials and an organic asthetic.

Riecine Winery Kioskthe concept for the riecine winery, is the quartz crystal. it is a naturally occuring mineral with sharp angles, brilliant

coloring, assymetrical balance, unique repeating patterns, and a transparent quality. all of these elements will be

brought into the design by creating dominate features with geometric angles, patterns and repeats. besides having

powerful physical features, crystal helps to harmonize a space by balancing the energy. these characteristics will

provide a peaceful wine tasting area.

Riecine Winery KioskThe environment is one of the biggest aspects of the Riecine winery. Knowing how important its role is, i turned to nature

for inspiration. from this came the concept of a branch which connects well with the winery. The pieces of the Winery’s

kiosk will take on organic forms and will be delivered as individual pieces; however, when assembled together the sections

will interlock with each other to form a functional, and successful business stand.

Riecine Winery KioskRiecine is located in Gaiole in Chianti, Italy. It consists of 30 acres of vineyard, olive groves, and woodlands. Based

off of the design of the winery, Riecine wants a kiosk located in Florence to sell and promote their wine. The kiosk

will incorporate the same design strategy and theme as the winery. The concept for the design of the Riecine kiosk

is a birdcage. natural form will be incorporated into the kiosk with a sliding door that will resemble a cage. The

surrounding nature is an important aspect to the Riecine Winery. By incorporating the elements of a birdcage into

the design, the Riecine kiosk will embody all the elements of Italy’s natural beauty. To connect with nature, the

kiosk is located in the Boboli Gardens of Florence. Visually a birdcage is made of wire and has a natural form. Its

strong variation in line will be incorporated into the kiosk by mixing geometric and classical design. The kiosk will

combine both traditional and modern design to provide a strong contrast and will incorporate sustainable materials

throughout. The Riecine kiosk’s consistent design will result in an overall aestically pleasing space that will combine

traditional and modern design by the use of sustainable materials, ultimately creating a space to sell wine to the

Florentine people.

Three of Swords30 x 42 cm

I chose Dante Alighieri because he is known across the

world for his writing and is strongly affiliated with

Florentine history, as well as with the meaning of the

Three of Swords tarot card. I also wanted the overall

theme and composition of my cards to convey a strong

italian, yet mysterious feeling. Thusly, I decided to

use an old parchment paper and incorporate a mystic

symbol in to my work.

Tarot: the Sun30 x 42 cm

Florence is a city where we see the strong

juxtaposition of the very old with the very new,

such as here with the classic pictures of landscape

and paintings, iced wight eh graffiti. I wanted

there t be a strong contrast between the two that

makes the viewer think and move around the page.

I also wanted them to be a new take on the tarot

cards apart from the traditional and mystical feel.

Tarot: The Hermit30 x 42 cm

I chose to represent Florentine artists in my short series

of tarot cards, identifying Michelangelo as the Hermit.

Michelangelo was one of the most famous artists of his

time, though he often kept to himself. He did not desire

marriage, family or children, but rather focused on his own

work, of which he was overly critical. Michelangelo was

a guru, an inspiration to others, as well as a figure who

desired a sense of stillness.

Tarot: the Tower30 x 42 cm

I decided to create a “Pop Art”

set of tarot cards because

I wanted to do something

completely different and

incorporate a new concept

into an unfamiliar setting.

I wanted to take the typical

tarot cards to a whole new level

using bright contrasting colors

and stark black sketched outlines

to create visual interest and

a pop feel.

Tarot: the Star30 x 42 cm

I chose Galileo Galilei as the face of the ‘Star’ tarot

card. The Star card represents solution to problems

and working in order to bring your vision into

manifestation. As an Italian physicist, mathematician,

astronomer, and philosopher, solving problemswas

Galileo’s expertise. He played a major role in the

Scientific Revolution and his discoveries and methods

are still respected today. He was especially renowned

for his astronomical observations and studies of the

unknown. This correlates directly to The Star because it

card of faith; both in your own power, and in powers

greater than your own.
