Controlled Entry

At Stucky: Stucky has

always made the safety of our

students and staff a top priority.

We are taking another step to

make our school safer by in-

stalling a new electronic entry

system that will be in place soon.

After 8 a.m., our front doors will

be locked. Next to the front

doors will be an intercom system

with a camera. After 8 a.m., par-

ents and guests will be required

to press the button on the inter-

com to alert office staff that they

have arrived. Office staff will

either look at the guest(s)

through the camera or speak to

them through the intercom to

verify their business with the

school before they remotely

unlock the doors. As always,

guests will report to the office to

receive their Hall Pass visitor

badge when they enter the

school. The front doors will be

unlocked at the end of the day at

3:10 p.m.

We thank you in advance for

your assistance during this transi-

tion. I believe having guests “buzz

in” when they come to our

school during the day is another

great way to help keep all of our

students safe.

Social Media Safety: We encourage you to be vigilant

in monitoring your student’s use

of social media. Here’s why. We

on December 12th. We have

The Parent/Teacher conferences

will be held the last Tuesday and

Thursday of February, 23rd and

25th from 1:30 pm to 6:50 pm.

We will once again be setting up

the Scholastic book fair in front

of the auditorium. It’s a good

opportunity for you to get a new

book and keep adding more to

the library. For visiting, your

student will be entered into a

drawing for $10 to spend at the

book fair. You can always go to

6th Grade News Science

Sixth grade students in Mrs.

Overstake’s science class have

been learning and experiment-

ing with Newton’s Laws of

Motion. After learning about

the first law, students ob-

served objects at rest and

objects in motion, and applied

outside forces to water, wash-

ers, paperclips, pennies and

playing cards.

Mathematics

We are working on algebraic

expressions this unit. Think of

times when a letter or symbol

could be used to represent a

number in real life. When,

where, and how do you use

variables?

Social Studies

6th grade Social Studies just

finished up the lessons on

Greek Mythology with some

wonderful student presenta-

tions. Mrs. Barker and Mrs.

Baker are so excited for the

song project and can’t wait to

see what the students come

up with this year.

Language Arts

In language arts, 7th grade students

will be working through the fourth

unit titled diversity. Students will

continue to read and analyze short

stories while focusing on how di-

versity is beneficial yet can be chal-

lenging. At the end of the unit,

students will write an informative

essay explaining how living in a

diversity society affects its mem-

bers.

Students in block 2 classes will

continue to work on grammar

navigating through Writing Matters.

In February, block 2 students will

begin reading The Watsons go to

Birmingham-1963. This novel will

allow students to go more in-depth

with the diversity unit taught in

language arts.

Social Studies

Mr. Tyner & Ms. Parnacott’s classes

have begun work on their Africa

research projects. This is a multi-

disciplinary project in which stu-

dents get to choose which topics

they want to research and what

sort of projects they want to cre-

ate. Each student has chosen at

least 5 products, for example: a

3D model of Africa, a children’s

book, news reports, etc. This pro-

ject has students working at their

own pace on the topics that most

interest them. Ask your child what

they are learning about!

this unit. Ways to get involved

with this at home include discussing

the path the basketball takes while

shooting free throws, predicting

the curve of a bowling ball rolling

down the lane, or the charting the

path of a jumping frog. Please let

us know what other ideas you and

your students have for linking our

learning to your family. We wel-

come your ideas!

Science

Over the next month in 8th grade

science students will embark on a

journey through the ever changing

Earth. Students will examine how

humans extract and consume natu-

ral resources. Students will also

evaluate human impacts on the

environment and asses solutions

for those negative impacts.

Social Studies

8th Grade US History is currently

discussing the expansion westward

of our great nation. This is known

as Manifest Destiny. Unfortunately,

America did not always have per-

mission to take some of the terri-

tories, and this leads to a war with

Mexico. This Mexican-American

War was from 1846 to 1848 and

will be the topic of the Spring

DBQ. Students will also be taking

the Multi-Discipline part of the

state test this month.

Mathematics

8th grade math has started our

extensive geometry unit. So far we

have examined all types of sym-

metry. Next up: looking at trian-

gles and other polygons to deter-

mine similarity and congru-

ence. This is a great unit to get

involved with at home: ask your

student where and when he can

see symmetry in nature, or ask her

to spot two shapes in the house

and discuss what angles and side

lengths the two shapes have in

common.

Honors algebra classes have con-

quered solving systems of equa-

tions. We are now looking at non-

linear relationships. Your student

will be learning about exponential

functions and parabolas mainly in
