From the Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today the Church in the Novus Ordo Masses celebrates the glorious Feast of the Epiphany. In the Latin Mass, however that Feast was celebrated this past Friday on January 6th, the traditional date to remember the visit of the three wise men. In the Latin Mass of this Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. That particular Feast was celebrated on December 30th in the Novus ordo Masses. I know it can be a little confusing to keep up with the two worlds that we have going on here at the parish. Pope Benedict called the two forms of the Liturgy the ordinary and the extraordinary forms. We are enriched by remembering and celebrating both forms at our parish although I realize that not too many people are going back and forth from one form to the other. We still have some 1962 Missals in the bookstore here at the parish in case anyone needs one for the celebration of the traditional Mass. Some of the Missals have Latin/English translations while others have the Latin/Spanish translations. The bookstore is opened most Sundays following the English Mass at 10:00 a.m. until around noon. You can also talk to Alejandra in our parish office if you are interested in shopping in our bookstore. Eventually when we build the new building we will move the bookstore to that new building which will provide easier access to it. The parish office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed for lunch.

Tomorrow, January 9th is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and in the Novus Ordo calendar is the last day of the Christmas cycle. However, in the Traditional calendar the Christmas season extends until Feb. 2nd the Feast of the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple.

Our school was opened again last Wednesday, January 4th and this week on Tuesday and Wednesday we start back again with the catechism classes.

January 8, 2017

I hope everyone has had a good Christmas break and is ready to resume studying the faith of the Church. The children of the catechism classes should have learned already the basic prayers, the commandments of God and the church, the seven sacraments and what they are as well as have a basic knowledge of the Church and of the faith. The testing of the children will commence on February 7th and the children who are preparing for First Communion and Confirmation should know these basic prayers and teachings by that date. They have been studying for a year and a half now. At least they should have been studying!! We also check to see how their assistance at Mass is coming along. The requirement is that as Catholics we attend Mass every Sunday and holy day of obligation. It is a mortal sin to miss Mass through our own fault. Also, Sundays are not to be spent in working or in buying and selling. We have a busy semester coming up but we are fortunate now to have not only Padre Elmer Rodriguez but also three sisters doing pastoral work. Let us give thanks to God for providing so well for our spiritual as well as material needs. God bless you each and every one of you as we begin this new year. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Timothy Davison

Padre Timothy Davison
