On April 1, Soldiers reporting to the WarriorLeaders Course will be required to have com-pleted Structured-sel development 1. Tose

who have not will be turned away rom school.Sgt. Maj. Jerry Bailey, structured sel development

director at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at

Fort Bliss, exas, said SSD-1 will allow or Soldiers toenter into a classroom mindest beore attending WLC.

Te dierence with SSD-1 as a prerequisite orWLC than the P test is that is a graduation require-ment, Bailey said. SSD-1 is a prerequisite, so you mustshow up ully qualied on 1 April to get into a class. For instance a Soldier, who goes to class on 30 March, has no SSD-1 requirement. A Soldier goes to class on1 April must be an SSD-1 graduate to be consideredully qualied to get into class. I he shows up not ullyqualied, then that Soldier would not get into class on1 April.

Beginning Oct. 10, 2010, Soldiers have been auto-matically enrolled in SSD-1 afer they complete basic

combat training or one-station unit training. Tey havtwo and a hal years to complete SSD-1; they will needto re-register i they havent completed it at that time.

Soldiers are introduced to squad drills in basic andadvanced individual training, but they arent required lead them. Tey will be required to lead those drills atWLC, Bailey said.

We did a cross walk and saw where the gaps were,

Bailey said. We did nd some gaps in SSD-1, so in thuture, Soldiers are going to see some dierent contentor some lessons because we ound that to be a trueprerequisite we had to get out some other basic thingsso once a Soldier arrives at WLC it wouldnt be the rstime they saw those particular classes.

In addition, our hours o map reading were addedto SSD-1 on Nov. 30 to give Soldiers experience in lannavigation, Bailey said.

In January when land navigation becomes part oWLC, they will have already had some experience inseeing that particular lesson, Bailey said. Tey wont

be starting rom scratch; it wont be a new task orthem. What we did was provide the academies with adisk with that particular lesson or anySoldier that graduated prior to November 30.

Each structured-sel development rquires about 80 hours o distance learning. SSD is meant to guide a Soldierrom the very beginning o their Armycareers to their retirement, Bailey said

I think any Soldier who goes backand looks at SSD, whether theyre a sergeant major or a sergeant, they will n

something that they need to reamiliarize themselves with or that they haven

seen in years or something that theyll learn, Bailey said. Asregulatory guidance continues to change, there is always some-thing that were doing dierent and new. As the developmentteam, were required to keep those lessons up to date.

Any Soldier who has graduated rom WLC is grandatheredinto the structured sel development system, meaning that he orshe does not have to take SSD-1. NCOs who want to help theirSoldiers through SSD-1 can sit with their Soldiers as they com-plete the work, or they can sign up or SSD-1, Bailey said.

For me to be a true coach, teacher or mentor, I would have

to sit down with my Soldier and look at them go through someo those dierent tasks and provide some inormation andeedback to assist that Soldier, Bailey said. It is the individualSoldiers responsibility, but as coaches, teachers and mentors, because not every Soldier passes it the rst time. I need to knowi my Soldier didnt pass. I my Soldier is having trouble, I needor them to know that Im there to provide that eedback.
