Every employer shall take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of employees while at

work

Every employer shall ensure that there are in place effective methods for identifying existing hazards, and (if possible before they arise) new hazards to employees at work.

WHAT IS STRESS ?

Stress. What is stress?Stress can be caused by many different things. Something becomes to hard or feels like it is impossible and that puts a massive strain on your mind and body. There is good stress but mainly when some one is stressed out it is a bad thing. It puts to much strain on not only you but can have effects on the people around you.

STRESS FEELINGS

When you are stressed out you can feel many different emotions. You can feel jealousy, anger, nervous, Paranoid, worried and get very defensive. This can effect how people feel about you and your work.

TYPES OF STRESSORS

Types of stressors can be things like

- Concerns about weight - A cheating wife - Being bullied at school or work - Maintenance to your house - Rising prices - To many things to do - Prices - Physical appearance - Health of a family member- Misplacing of your keys etc

NEGATIVE STRESS

Negative stress is bad stress and can have very bad effects on your body, people around you and your work. The effects stress has on you can be EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL AND BEHAVIOURAL. Some of those effects are

- Back pain - Over reacting to things- Have a short temper- Muscle tension - Cold hands - Body language towards others - Erratic behaviour- Depression- Trouble making decisions- Frustration - Sleeping badly - Anxiety

POSITIVE STRESS

Positive stress can also happen. Normally when you are very nervous about an up coming meeting or game or job interview. This is good though as it makes you want to perform that extra 10% and could result in you winning or getting the job or promotion.

Stress can have effects on your behaviour such as

- Anger - Drug or Alcohol abuse- Angry outbursts - Increased smoking - Irritability- Eating more or less - Sleeping too much or too little- Isolating yourself from others- Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS

- Moodiness - Irritability or short temper- Agitation, inability to relax- Feeling overwhelmed- Sense of loneliness and isolation- Depression or general unhappiness- Crying spells - Social withdrawal - Worrying - Feeling insecure - Relationship conflicts

STRESS RELATED ILLNESSES

Stress is not the same as ill-health, but has been related to such illnesses as;

-heart disease chronic fatigue anxiety attacks mood swings psychological distress depression sleep problems high blood pressure eating disorders

COSTS OF STRESS

Because stress can cause not only emotional and physical but behavioural symptoms. This can sometimes lead to some body snapping or having an outburst or physically abusing someone or even attacking someone on a emotional and physical level. This may lead to you losing your job or losing a close family member or not succeeding in a promotion you have applied for. You could also lose out financially. In serious stressful situations people will kill.

FACTORS INFLUENCING WORK STRESS

Stress is always caused quiet easily through work some factors are.

- Being bullied at work or exposed to violence or injury

- Ongoing problems with work related to learning disability or other problems

- Crammed schedules, not having enough time to rest and relax, and always being on the go

External Stresses - Organisational

Organizational stress is the stress that takes place in the workplace. A police officer would experience this by working long hours, also by taking their work outside of work.

A good way to deal with this type of stress would be to leave work at work .

Internal Stress

Internal factors, contributing to stress include:

 - Inability to accept uncertainty- Pessimism- Negative self-talk- Unrealistic expectations- Perfectionism- Lack of assertiveness

STRESS CONTROLThe best way to deal with stress is learning how to deal with it properly and how to manage the stress. Here are some things that can help keep your stress under control.

- Take a stand against over scheduling

- Be realistic

- Get a good nights sleep

- Learn to relax

- Getting regular exercise helps people manage stress
