AFI is a communication forum among government agencies, research institutes, universities, industries, and farmer groups related to aflatoxin control

Objectives :To improve the awareness related to aflatoxin contamination in foods and feedsTo support the government and socializing the regulation related to aflatoxinTo set up priority to control aflatoxin problemTo establish integrated programs and activities

Road Map to AFI

2001-2004 : ACIAR Initial Project (Objectives 1 & 5)To survey Indonesian peanuts for incidence of A. flavus and aflatoxin at various stages in the food delivery chainTo foster the implementation of aflatoxin monitoring and control strategies in Indonesia

Output: aflatoxin contamination at the farmer is low, increased significantly during post-harvest handling.aflatoxin contents of imported peanut collected from retailers were higher than that of importers.the highly aflatoxin contaminated peanuts are sorted out and sold at lower price.

poorer grade (i.e. visually fungal affected nuts) peanuts tend to be added to peanut sauces very little awareness of aflatoxin and its health impacts in the Indonesian community (i.e. from farmers, to traders, to retailers, to consumers)food companies who are involved in exporting their products are aware of aflatoxin risknot to create panic among the peanut consuming community and potentially reduce the consumption of this highly nutritious food.

AFI is an effective media in disseminating awareness on aflatoxin contamination at local and national level.AFI promotes capacity building on aflatoxin control by local government authorities in term of regulation, technical personnel, budget support, and networking.AFI leadership is well respected by all stakeholders (universities, research institutes, government, farmers groups, traders, industries) at local and national levels.AFI Challenges:

Assisting implementation of the national standard on mycotoxin in food supply chainEstablishing network with regional and global community and organization on mycotoxin control
